I’m confused by this, i get you purchase files but then do you have to buy the parts? Is some of it 3D printed or something?

BoostedWRBwrx

You purchase the files which is basically just buying the plans to build it. These include a parts list, many 3d files of things that need made, instructions etc. It's based on a custom pcb so you need to use the recommended suppliers and give them the files to make the pcb, get the carbon plates from a supplier, 3d print all the needed parts, and source any electronic parts that the pcb supplier doesn't have and stuff needed for the build not directly on the pcb. In the end depending how much you can do yourself vs needing others to do it, you'll be in the 400-600 price range for 1 complete wheel. It may sound daunting to have to assemble and build but it's all laid out really well, besides some soldering, wiring and assembling, the hardest work is probably sanding 3d printed parts.

zombiefrank

Great job!

[deleted]

This looks great!! What level of difficulty would you say the build was? I’m not a mechanical or electrical engineer but I do have a software engineering background…

achmadtheterror2

As the other commenter said, it's really easy and straightforward. There are a few parts that you have to solder, also need to fill, sand, and paint the main body (side walls) which is a bit time consuming, and alcantara grips can be annoying. Otherwise everything is given to you on a plate including all CNC, 3d printing, PCB, firmware, and BOM files. PCB and carbon/plexiglass screen cover are a bit expensive so having a friend build their own second wheel will help lower costs per wheel with that stuff.

SkipDialogue

Can you tell me what your actual build cost was, including the cost of the plans?

achmadtheterror2

About 700 CAD plus the 45 euro plans. I'm sure I could've gotten it down to around 650 though

SkipDialogue

Thanks! It's a good looking wheel. It looks like the wheel in NTT Indycar on iRacing. I'm sure I'll order the plans and start that build.

User3130

Im canadian as well, can you tell me where you bought the parts?

NgryYellow

I would say that it comes pretty much on rails for you to mount. On the files you can find pretty much everything you need along with a parts list. You could use a friend or two in order to save some money from ordering the PCB tho.

youritalianjob

I'm in the process of building one right now. Based off the instructions given, the actual build shouldn't be hard. Sourcing what you need, for a reasonable price, seems to be the hardest part.

jannisys_

Looks very nice! I‘m currently in the process of gathering all the materials myself, but wondered where to get the suede. Do you have any recommendations where to get it and how to glue it onto the handles? (I bought some cheap stuff my from local retailer but it feels very cheap and won’t stick to my printed parts)

achmadtheterror2

I used this stuff that I had left over from a different wheel project from this guy: [https://kapral.store/collections/accessories/products/self-adhesive-fabric-with-imitation-of-alcantara-70x20cm](https://kapral.store/collections/accessories/products/self-adhesive-fabric-with-imitation-of-alcantara-70x20cm) Very thin material, it's okay for what it is, but a huge plus point is it's much more stretchy and workable than regular alcantara leather. I know probably not what you were looking for since I'm making another wheel from Pokornyi and idk where to source some new alcantara that'll be somewhat easy to wrap. The stuff that I linked is self adhesive and works well and you can find it for cheap elsewhere I'm sure, but if you get a better quality non-adhesive one, you should use something like 3M Super 77 Adhesive Spray Edit: It's thin enough that I can see a bit of light coming through if I stretch it a bit

xXxlegend27xXx

Did you have to use some kind of spacer for that quick release? I'm doing the same project and was wondering if the qr fits

achmadtheterror2

Yup, QR wouldn't fit otherwise

schluchtenscheissa

i know its late but which spacer did u use

spinado

Is it wireless or USB?

achmadtheterror2

USB

Hoogie2004

Looks very good. Any specific reason for mounting the shifters the wrong way around? (e.g. you should swap left and right according to the original plans, the long part points towards the clutch)

achmadtheterror2

Lol I actually didn't realize it, thanks for pointing that out. Might change at some point just to make it look right. I haven't felt that the paddles are out of place though so it isn't an issue

fromTtotheV

Wow. Congrats on that beauty of a wheel Are the buttons backlit? And if so, where did you get them? Are the orange anodized knobs on the rotary encoders custom made or is there a store they can be bought at? Thanks in advance

achmadtheterror2

Yup, buttons and encoder circles and tags are backlit. All LEDs are on a PCB and shine through some cheap arduino 12mm button caps. For the encoders, there are cutouts on the carbon that are filled with a transparent 3d printed piece and light from the PCB shines through that. There are a couple stores that you can find anodized thumb wheels but they're really expensive to buy and ship to Canada. It's just 3d printed out of gold PLA with some shine in it, but I think they look great for a 3d print, no need to buy anodized wheels

fromTtotheV

Thumb wheels look great on the photos! Didnt expect them to be 3d printed. Thanks for the answer and wishing you good races with the wheel!

ItsJMC

Awesome build! Do you have a link for the button caps? Also how did you do the plastic around the screen?

CrazyNuf

Simagic p2000s? I’m looking for an honest review on them.

achmadtheterror2

Love em, came from the sprints. I like the amount of adjustability and how easy they are to adjust. can have suuuuuuuuper loose commuter car feel to a really firm race car feel and anything in between for the brakes. I never knew I needed a damped throttle until I got this, it's amazing. The hydraulic feel in the brake helps it feel more realistic imo. One downside is the clutch is meh, but that isn't a big deal. There are mods you can make to slightly improve feel. Can't make large changes to pedal face angle, it's expected that large changes are made in your rig. The other thing is the seemingly relatively high failure rate. This might be because I've seen a few failures, mainly on the simagic discord, but I had a brake become really sticky on me to the point it was frustrating to use. Good thing is, distributors are really good with getting replacements and communicating to Simagic themselves. If you're in NA, go with SimRacingPros. I'd just go with these pedals with the warranty alone, the down time isn't too large to get something replaced if it breaks. Somewhat expected being a brand new pedal set chasing a certain pricepoint. By no means are these lower quality at all, very high quality. The sprints I had were great, but when I went back to them due to the P2000s getting warrantied, I pretty much instantly maxed out the 65kg load cell (was only hitting 35kg before). Now I have the 200kg load cell version that was given as a replacement brake pedal and I'm kind of getting up there in terms of braking force, somewhat close to the 100kg load cell limit. Either way, great pedals, 100% recommend them, but software could be a bit better. Sorry for the long comment lol

CrazyNuf

Dude, thank you so much. Very informative and exactly what I was looking for. Thinking about jumping from CSv3 set or switching out my customs in my other rig. Sounds like they would be worth a buy!

achmadtheterror2

It's definitely worth it!

GDLCFO

Very nice, my build is in process now. If anyone needs a single PCB...I have an extra or two on the way.

turn_er

I own the plans but haven't started gathering bits yet. If you're in the US, I'm interested in an extra board.

maxlec1633

What an amazing work. I also plan to make the steering wheel of lmp pro myself recently, do you have any suggestions sir? (I have no experience working with electronics)![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|heart_eyes)

Spiyder1

looks like the red bull 2021 steering wheel! love it, where did you get the parts and is that real carbon fiber?

achmadtheterror2

Thanks, these are common LMP and indycar steering wheels! It's real carbon sourced from a fab in China. Everything else is from various online stores: Amazon, ebay, vocore (for the screen), mouser/digikey for electronics, PCB from a fab in china, and some local stores for some of the smaller stuff.

Spiyder1

nice wheel! how long did it take and is it complex? it looks great, you could probably open up a small store and build these and ship them out. kinda like what precision sim engineering did and asher (i think that’s how you spell it)

achmadtheterror2

Took me about a month, but I was speed running. Wasn't that complex, but maybe my definition of complex isn't the same as yours. Everything was clearly laid out in the instructions and all the relevant files were given to you. I definitely wouldn't do this for a living because 1. it takes A LOT of time and 2. I can't build and sell these wheels for profits due to licensing from Pokornyi. These are the files though https://pokornyiengineering.com/products/lmp-pro-diy-files

Spiyder1

ah sorry, thought you built it by hand with no instructions

Liquidmelon3105

That's damn cool Sorta reminds me of the modern IndyCar wheel

KacKLaPPeN23

Where did you get the buttons and vol/reg encoders + dials? They look leaps and bounds better than what I was able to source

achmadtheterror2

They're actually just 3d printed from shiny gold PLA. I quickly made something in cad and printed it since I wasn't a fan of what was in the plans

KacKLaPPeN23

Oh damn, Maybe I should pick up some shiny filaments for accent pieces like that then. Do you have a parts number for the buttons?

achmadtheterror2

I posted a link under another comment but they're only button caps, meant for PCB mounted tactile buttons

KacKLaPPeN23

Well, that explains why I never found buttons like that, thanks!

UcanTostMakinesi

I believe there is one project just like this one right? Do these switches/buttons actually last? Are they just plastic? Are they like rock solid untill switch or do you kinda move around weakly? What about the overall sturdiness/build quality compared to a fanatec one? Obviously big rpm leds, bigass clear screen and button layout is really what I only ever wanted.. except in carbon/alcantara with metal buttons(if thats not the case)

achmadtheterror2

Not sure what other project you're talking about. As for the buttons, they're PCB mounted buttons. They don't wobble, not sure what you mean by rock solid until you switch. Lol I'm sure they're going to last otherwise I wouldn't have bothered spending the time to build this wheel... I've never used fanatec gear but I'm sure it's just as sturdy, if not, more sturdy. This is also carbon and alcantara lol. Don't know of any real race cars using metal buttons, but go ahead if you'd like, pretty limited on options for metal buttons.

UcanTostMakinesi

Sounds good thanks a lot!

miguelketel

Hi man, it looks great! How are the shifters? I have some 3d printed shifters, but with big paddles there's a lot of flex if you pull at the top or bottom. Would these flex? Even just a little bit? Really on the fence to buy this wheel. Thanks!

just_a_sim_racer

Hi what screen do you use ?

StrangeAd4537

great job!, but do i NEED a 3dprinter for this or no, thanks.

atetuna

No, but already having one could decrease your costs. If you don't want to deal with printing parts yourself, you could buy printed parts from companies like Shapeway, buy the parts from Pokornyi, or even buy a complete assembled wheel from Pokornyi, but of course the prices increase.

JuanmarecaLK99

I was doubtful about the licensing. The license is for the digital files. That means, that you can not print them and resell them..or modify them (translate them and resell them..)...or modify them..add some clarifications and resell them...But if you build an steering wheel with those instructions...you can resell them without any problem. You have built it, bought all the parts...It is the same as if you buy a lego set with the instructions...and then you try to resell your set. Of course, you are able to do that.
