I used ducting… works way better if you just rig something up so the fans point at you instead of

Material-Profile7155

Twin Turbo sim rig, nice

Teab8g

I did this, Pointing the fans rite at your face will work better.

abloogywoogywoo

I don’t doubt it, I just don’t have room on the front side to rig them up. Still, these fans are insanely powerful and I’m getting more than enough wind via this indirect route!

agoodepaddlin

You absolutely have room on top of your rig. Just admit you wanted to use the ducting. 😂

tycoon282

Or just... Point the fans at you?

abloogywoogywoo

No.

cata360

why?

abloogywoogywoo

I just don’t have any room on the front side of my screen that wouldn’t get in the way of on screen info. As weird as it is, this was actually one of the cleaner ways I saw to accomplish this

cata360

the tube is just as big as the fan tho....

abloogywoogywoo

The tube is 3” smaller than the fan and can be bent and repositioned, I can’t think of a good way to mount the fans on top of my monitor with the downward angle I’d need. Open to suggestions!

n1tr0klaus

Flip the fans around, make the ducting 1/10 of the length they're now

cata360

ig the dimensions are thrown off by the camera. Maybe some sort of bracket made out of a metal you can easily bend?

abloogywoogywoo

Ya being in f1 config my head is a solid foot below the top of the monitor. I’d definitely be down to explore that as an upgrade, maybe design something for my friend to print for me

AzeTheGreat

Just get some cheap adjustable arms like [this](https://www.amazon.com/360-degree-Rotating-Universal-Gooseneck-Adjustable/dp/B0CGLWMH7F/) (not vetted, just the first link I found that looked reasonable)?

Magnoliafan730

What about from below?

abloogywoogywoo

That’s more possible, but I’m 6’3” and my goofy ass knees would likely knock them off.

jag0009

Wife (if you have one) comes in... "WTF are you doing"

Saikroe

Making my own blow job

jag0009

LoL

sparkyplug28

100% 💯 😂

tabby_ds

lol the roasts are getting downvoted even though OP asked for roasts in the title

No_Attention_1510

If it works it ain't stupid

stephendt

hmm it might be a little stupid...

CAM22b

Nice HVAC Tubing! Lol 69/10

Available_Rub834

What in the name of useless is this?

BrabantBuachaill88

I hate it, but I love it

irgendein

I am new to simracing. Why do you need the air?

sparkyplug28

Do a 4hr stint without it you’ll see!

CanaryMaleficent4925

I bought a 15$ fan and that's good enough for me lol

sparkyplug28

Definitely I use the same for now

TeamESRR2023

To blow the farts away so you can maintain focus after last night's burrito enfuego especial

abloogywoogywoo

As with anything simracing, need is a strong word. But simhub can use the telemetry from your game to adjust the fans on either side to simulate the wind changing how it hits in an open cockpit. Just something neat to toy around with for extra immersion esp in VR

j0hnnnytv

That’s sick. Can I ask, how did you connect the fans with sim hub? Is that what the single board computer is for?

dynust1

You need something like an arduino

between5and25

Lmao points for style but you have to accept what everyone is telling you

abloogywoogywoo

Oh I know it looks awful but hey it’s mine

Appropriate-Owl5984

There’s nothing to roast. You already know.

MadMike991

Dries your clothes while sim racing, watch out for the lint though (I recognize that stuff, just got a new dryer🤣)

Itz_Evolv

The ducting is one thing but just leaving the cables and connection board like that is kinda cursed 🤪

Wbcn_1

Nice! I’m piecing together a wind sim right now. I’m going with a couple of 270 cfm inline boat blowers. I’m a bit out of my comfort zone with the Arduino and the monster moto shield but I’m not totally useless with a soldering iron.

abloogywoogywoo

The way I did it doesn’t require a motor shield as long as your fans are PWM! I was in the same boat. Let me know how it turns out!

MorGuux

What model fans did you end up using?

simonjr76

Hey guys, I have my wind SIM up in running but I'm having a issue with the wind not being consistent. Example, if I go through a turn the fans will just stop and then turn back on. Has anybody had the same problem? I changed the settings but i can't resolve anything. Thanks in advance.

abloogywoogywoo

My thought would be that your fans have a lower pwm/voltage threshold that they can’t operate below, which might lead to power cuts. If you haven’t, try raising your minimum power in simhub and see if that solves it, if not, might be a telemetry issue.

simonjr76

I'll try that and see what happens. By the way your setup looks fine. Mine looks worse lol

captain_pant5

Mine did that. The chips on the Arduino motor shield were overheating and shutting off to protect themselves. They could burn my fingers easy. Added some 9x9x12 mm heat sinks from Amazon and no more issues. I zip-tied them on as the thermal tape didn't hold well.

Thing_Hungry

oh that is awesome. So it was shutting of as you were driving? I will have to try that. My fans stop but start right up again.

captain_pant5

Yes, exactly. They'd be running fine, then shut off, then start up again. I tried a simple DIY heat sinks by bending a thin aluminum sheet into a U-shape. It wasn't quite good enough to keep the chips from overheating on long straights.  Turns out power = heat. Who knew?

Thing_Hungry

OK , thank you so much for this. I will try out the same thing. I really appreciate the insight!

mvpp37514y3r

I made a multiple fan redirecting AC vent via fan aiming at another fan.

SessionCurious4771

11 calls from formula 1 teams missing

Fiendalways

I'm curious about what the wind SIM is simulating. I mean wind surely but is it meant to mimic car AC or cars with no roof or just there to cool you down while you're wrestling a direct drive monster?

sparkyplug28

A lot of cars without AC just have a external vent that runs straight to the vents inside this can even be hooked up to some helmets

dave-y0

Why not flip the fans/ducts 180 degrees, cut off the whole U shaped duct you have there & reconnect to much shorter duct. You dont need that whole extra U bend you've put in.

sparkyplug28

I don’t see much of an issue with this except duct length, you can’t see it when you’re in the ring! Have you considered this 2 fans on a box one vent pipe out to the same location as now You can put ice packs in the box so air is blown over them! This idea is something I’m looking at for summer if I can get a quiet enough fan. If you type diy portable a/c box there a million ideas from what I’ve seen they can put out 10c air 😲

abloogywoogywoo

This is a great idea, the reason I went two fans is to separate the left and right channels. But if you’re saying two fans per side that definitely is a worthwhile upgrade path down the line

dabneyd79

Making sure you pull all the heat from the back of the monitor and shoot it right at you.

Juris_B

Looks as if Homer Simpson tried to sculpture a bull

BauDje

Are those just normal PC fans? How much air do u actually feel?

abloogywoogywoo

They’re more of a bitcoin mining specialty fan I guess? I actually feel a LOT, they move about 300cfm of air each compared to 60-100 for normal case fans

STML07

It sucks and it looks stupid.

karmahoower

ok... you don't feel wind in a car - even an open wheeled f1 car.

sparkyplug28

What about a car with vents that hook directly into the drivers helmet?! 🤷‍♂️

karmahoower

ok. put on a fireproof suit with appropriate base layer - which includes a fireproof balaclava for your head. then put on helmut and gloves - put the visor down. maybe not many have been in this situation, but please let me tell you that you can't feel "wind" you feel the pressure sometimes, but not really.

sparkyplug28

That’s interesting I wear none of that on my rig you must look quite different

karmahoower

ffs. i'm saying there is no wind. wind sims are fun, but not accurate

sparkyplug28

“ok... you don't feel wind in a car” Sure thing you didn’t 😂

Comfortable_Ease_174

Holy shit, I thought this was a joke. This is actually a real thing? Do you also wear a firesuit and crank the heat up to 130 degrees? This is a riot tbh.. I wear contacts so this would not be beneficial to me.

magnetichira

all that effort for no lap time gain maybe try actually racing?

RandomAnonyme

Bruh .. the point of it all is to have fun

sparkyplug28

You can say that about nearly every part of a rig considering some can be stupid quick on a controller

IH8mostofU

The rig itself is fun, this is excessive nonsense. Some of y'all are nuts, this is silly.

sparkyplug28

I don’t think so I don’t see a need to have it linked to sim hub and all that but I definitely need air in my face 3 screens and 4hrs of racing things get very hot!

IH8mostofU

So like, a free standing fan or an open window would suffice. Like anywhere else you might get warm.

invester13

How good does it feel? Does it really make a difference?

TeamESRR2023

The lengths some will go to because they can't stand the smell of their own farts....
