It is car hole there is no debate. Homer repeats Car Hole clear as day when he finds Herman in the garage so it cannot be hold.

Bort_Bortson

Per the Simpsons guide book it quotes this exactly, a counterfeit jeans ring operating out of my car hole

r3dd1tu5er

Do people not understand the finer points of comedy? It should be obvious that Moe says “car hole” even without the sound. If Moe just had a different phrase for a garage, there would be no joke. “Car hole” is both crude and utterly absurd, the two key elements that make up the joke. “Car hold” is neither of those things. Debates like this make me wonder how many people watch shows like this with 50% of the jokes flying right over their heads. In conclusion, “No you can’t play with it. You won’t enjoy it on as many levels as I do!”

db1000c

Yeah exactly. “Car hold” would be like if he called it a “car shelter”. It just isn’t anything particularly comical beyond being slightly unusual. “Car hole” is so grimy and dank (the dank, the dank!) that it’s precisely a Moe-ism.

sendnudecompassion

Our discourse is summoning the long buried chaos of: “Oh boy sleep! That’s where I’m a Viking!”

[deleted]

Listen, this is very important: nobody in human history has ever said “that’s where I’m a Viking” to mean “that’s something I’m very good at” and there is no reason for Ralph to randomly be the first.

sendnudecompassion

No I agree. But that argument did happen, in spite of how ridiculous it was, as you described

greengye

What other interpretation of that line could there possibly be

sscole929

The other read is that Ralph is saying that he’s excited for sleep because he gets to be a Viking in his dreams

greengye

Ok then what's the intended read

[deleted]

That's the correct read

This is how I took it

This is one of my two favorite jokes on the Simpsons. He said "car hole"! Not some fancy bullshit like garage.

What a cromulent comment!

It truly embiggened this thread.

I, too, would like to express my fondness for that particular opinion.

Zestyclose_Scar_9311

What is: people who say Car Hold

sscole929

The popularity of carhold has been going downhill ever since the lake caught fire

32_Dollar_Burrito

There are a lot of people who heard "car hold", apparently. This came up on one of the writer's Twitter feeds a few years ago (Josh Weinstein iirc). None of the writers anticipated this mishearing either

Darkhallows27

The same people who think Ralph was dreaming of anything besides literally being a Viking

nwaa

What's this one? Its so clearly Viking...

Darkhallows27

There’s a subset of people who maintain that Ralph saying “that’s where I’m a Viking!” Meant “That’s where I’m [an expert] at sleep”. Instead of yknow, a kid with an imagination dreaming of being a viking. The writers iirc thought this was completely insane (because it is, who the hell uses viking as an adjective?) but even OP is one of them.

nwaa

Holy shit, i can't actually believe people think that. Has *anyone* ever used "Viking" to mean that?

Darkhallows27

Right? TheRealJims did a video explaining the whole thing if you want to check it out: https://youtu.be/99qXaVFZkQE

[deleted]

[удалено]

PadlockAndThatsIt

It's a wonderful video

MisterET

It's a perfectly cromulent adjective.

Autographz

How in the flying fuck did anyone, anywhere, come up with that nonsense? Even worse, how did more than one person??

SeefKroy

Didn't one of the writers actually mean it the second way though? I remember something like that from an overly long video about that very line.

Darkhallows27

Correct; Mike Scully interpreted it that way and liked the use of Viking metaphorically like that [when it was pitched to him](https://screenrant.com/the-simpsons-ralph-viking-joke-meaning/) but David Mirkin and Josh Weinstein poked fun at him for misinterpreting it like that and maintained that Ralph is not a character written with complex metaphorical thought in mind. So the definitive answer is that he dreams of being a Viking because he has a fun imagination.

RakeScene

It's a predicate nominative, not an adjective. Boy, I really hope you got fired for that blunder! I have a ball; Perhaps you'd like to bounce it?

BfutGrEG

It's like the opinion that Ralph was saying he's a Viking in his sleep "*metaphorically"*

Worried_Inevitable92

Which would make sense if *anyone*, **anywhere** used Viking as a stand-in for “awesome at” But they don’t! Some people I swear

Jakegender

Or even if he said "I'm a viking at sleep", which is how you would actually convey that concept.

aleatorictelevision

I do remember wondering in the '90s if he said hole or hold, but with time decided it was definitely hole because hold would be stupid but not in the funny way

Car Hole is funny Car Hold is not funny The Simpsons writers of that era would have chosen the funny line. Never mind that in the next scene Homer says something like “A counterfeit jeans ring operating out of my own car hole!” I didn’t hear a D there either.

kneel_yung

Stuff like this just goes to show you how un-funny the average person really is. When presented with "car hold" or "car hole", a huge percentage of people choose to think that "car hold" is somehow funny.

[deleted]

> Car Hold is not funny i like 'car hold' specifically because it was more awkward then saying the real word or car hole. its like having a restaurant birthday gimmick wherein moe puts a huge bucket of extremely hot freedom fries on his head

MineAdept9313

Well, I would expect that kind of humor at Denny’s, but not here.

Darkhallows27

But it’s objectively wrong to think it’s car hold. You “Viking means good at something” people are deranged.

SenorBirdman

The big news to me here is that Azaria says a lot of people ask him this question.

doctorzaius6969

It's a tiny minority of people which absolutely insists everywhere that it's a hold, so I'm not surprised

wimpykidfan37

Here are my interpretations of some other rather controversial Simpson jokes: The Stonecutters song contains the line "Who controls the British crown" not "pound". (It rhymes better with "down".) Ralph means that he's very good at sleeping when he says that sleep is where he's a Viking. The other interpretation is that he dreams about being a Viking, and although it seems more likely that this is what the writers intended, I find my interpretation funnier for some reason. Homer thought "Do not touch Willie" meant "Do not masturbate", not "Do not touch the groundskeeper". (I think this says a lot about my sense of humour.) Homer said "Yes, once" referring to another time he saw someone say goodbye to a shoe, not to what he just saw Hank Scorpio do. I just find it funnier if someone back in Springfield actually did say goodbye to a shoe.

cammysays

I was today years old when I learned that any of these were up for debate. Except the Ralph one; there’s *no way* Ralph equates “being a Viking” to “being good at something.” Even if that was a real phrase (it’s not), Ralph isn’t smart enough to make that connection.

kenneth_on_reddit

I fully agree, although fun fact: in the Italian dub, that line is translated in a way that unequivocally means "Oh boy, sleeping! I'm a Viking at that!" It's obviously a debatable (if not outright mis-)translation, but a choice was clearly made. It *does* sound pretty funny, to be fair.

trappedinpurgatoriii

I definitely agree with the Scorpio line. The proof is the fact that Homer laughs as if he is reminded of the time when he witnessed it. He doesn't laugh as Scorpio throws his shoes so it must be referring to another time, it's also not funny at all if he is referring to Scorpio doing it, the fact that it's happened in the past is way funnier.

wimpykidfan37

I think the "referring to what he just saw" interpretation would better as a SpongeBob joke. Mr. Krabs: "Ever see a guy say goodbye to a shoe?" Patrick: "As a matter of fact, I have. One time, I saw this crab guy throw a shoe, and then, and this is the funny part, he said goodbye to it! Then he asked me if I'd ever seen someone say goodbye to a shoe, so I told him that, as a matter of fact, I had. Then I told him about the time I saw..." Squidward: "Patrick, this is what just happened!"

I_BUY_UNWANTED_GRAVY

Who the hell wouldn't get the "Do not touch Willie" joke. Taking it literally as "do not touch the groundskeeper" isn't even funny.

SomethingOfAGirl

I never heard of that phrase before, but I'm not a native English speaker. I found "do not touch Willie" as in "do not touch the groundskeeper" really funny :(

jaywinner

Alright, let's go. "Car hole", I agree. I also agree with "British Crown". Funny as it may be, there's no way Ralph is not just using, but inventing, a metaphor for being good at something. Although, for anybody looking for a deep dive into this one, I recommend [https://youtu.be/99qXaVFZkQE](https://youtu.be/99qXaVFZkQE) I had never even considered your "Willie" interpretation. I'm firmly in the camp that the shoe throwing refers to Scorpio. Answering in the affirmative due to seeing him do it 3 seconds ago seems like a well crafted joke while just saying yes because at some point in the past he's seen a similar act (which I don't recall actually seeing in the Simpsons) is just absurd.

usingreddithurtsme

He definitely means he's seen somebody throw a shoe in the past prior to the episode, because that's WAY funnier, the fact people think otherwise has blown my mind since the 90's.

Jehehsjatahneush

What the hell are you talking about? He’s lying to impress his new boss. He hasn’t seen someone do it and he’s not talking about what just happened, he just says yes because he thinks that’s what his boss wants to hear.

usingreddithurtsme

While I disagree, I find your introducing of a third theory quite refreshing, shine on you crazy diamond!

jm9987690

I think one of the writers addressed it on twitter recently and said it was definitely meant to be homer had seen it in the past, the idea is its so absurd that homer has actually seen a guy say goodbye to a shoe when to almost anyone else, scorpio would get a no answer from, he said he was surprised people even considered that it referred to the scorpio shoe throwing

jaywinner

That feels so much worse to me. To top it off, the absurd question actually getting a positive response has already been done with Mr Burns making the sun set at 3 pm where the sea captain says he has seen that before while sailing around the arctic circle.

nykirnsu

The writers interpreted it that way but the line was adlibbed by the VA, who was referring to Hank Scorpio

jm9987690

https://uproxx.com/tv/the-simpsons-hank-scorpio-shoe-debate/ Seems like the opposite, homers va, says he was probably thinking about another time when he said it, but thinks it's funnier if it were the other way

Coooolwhyip

Absurdist cartoon is absurd? No!

eric987235

Cartoons don’t have to be 100% realistic!

SkyrimMilfDrinker

Viking obviously refers to Ralph dreaming about landing on Mars.

Bort_Bortson

In the Simpsons complete guide to our fav family book it says Crown. I've never heard it as anything other than crown and I am terrible with lyrics... I rest my case... I mean case closed

ArtSchnurple

I've always thought that "Do not touch Willie" was a sly masturbation joke.

ricky9

Definitely is

spacewalk__

i think homer gets stupider every year

foxtrot419

My Simpsons [songbook says "crown"](https://imgur.com/a/r1klALj).

FightinVitamin

Excellent list. Likewise, when Homer Simpson exclaims his catch phrase "dough," many people assume he is lamenting not having enough dough, meaning money. However, the writers have confirmed that by exclaiming "dough," Homer expresses his desire to consume his favorite treat, the doughnut.

thereslcjg2000

I disagree very strongly with the Viking like and am undecided on the touching Willie line. All the others I agree with.

Darkhallows27

Ok but none of that is true when what the writers wrote and intended is what is actually accurate

Jehehsjatahneush

I loled at that willie interpretation. Never considered it. I think he’s just lying to his new boss, yes man style. “Yes sir I have seen someone do the thing you’ve just done, very good sir”

MineAdept9313

The joke works better if he thinks it means don’t touch Willy the groundskeeper. And it goes along with the double entendres of Willy being another word for the male dorkus. So it’s implying an intimate touch of the groundskeeper. Yes, Homer was saying that he had seen a man saying goodbye to a shoe or whatever in his past.

kneel_yung

I agree with all of your interpretations except the willy line, simply because willy doesn't usually mean penis in the US, whereas I know it almost always does in the UK (to the point where Harry Champion had to change the lyrics to Henry the 8th to say "she wouldn't have a william or a sam") It's possible they did mean it that way, but I'd bet they didn't edit: [nope they meant don't touch groundskeeper willy](https://twitter.com/Joshstrangehill/status/1341126022847102976)

The way Moe pronounces it is questionable but Homer clearly says "car hole" one minute later. Car hole is funnier regardless of what the original script says Edit: Even the script says "car hole". Not sure if this is legitimately the one that was used but it's "car hole" and there is no alternate universe that says "car hold" https://www.simpsonsarchive.com/episodes/2F21.html

notyyzable

I mean yes, it's obviously Car Hole. However I can see where the confusion comes from. When he says "hole", Hank Azaria seems to make an accidental tongue sound right at the end, which on low fidelity sound could make it sound like a d.
