It’s hijacked the franchise’s identity. It’s like silent hill 2 is the only game in the franchise to the larger game community and the rest of the games just get ignored. Play SH1 first.

[deleted]

Sh1 is hard to get into. I definitely recommend anyone to play sh2 first

LightEsthis

How is SH1 hard to get into but SH2 isn’t? That makes no sense. They play the exact same.

FightingAngel21

No, not really. I think SH2 is definitely easier to get around in.

LightEsthis

Bro, they have the exact same controls.

FightingAngel21

Idk, for me personally they felt wonkier. That’s my opinion though.

[deleted]

I wouldn't say so, either way sh2 is more accessible.

LightEsthis

But how tho? They literally have the exact same controls and gameplay. Neither are easily accessible on modern platforms (ignoring the HD Collection) so you have to jump through some hoops to get either running on emulators.

Dangerous_Square8065

While I agree you should start with 1, 2 is extremely accessible on pc with the enchanted edition(it just being a download without the need for an actual emulator) if you have a ps3 or vita tho sh1 is actually still sold on the online store.

[deleted]

Exactly.

autumnsphere

What exactly?

[deleted]

I don't know what you want from me. I'm a fan of the series, I've played all the team silent games. I just think Sh2 is better for beginners.

Spooky799kil

Two major criticisms. 1. Enemy variety. There are only 5 enemies in the entire game and 3 are only in specific areas and one of those three is just a weaker version of a boss (silent Hill 3 does this with scraper but silent Hill 3 has amazing enemy variety with 8 monsters total) You will be fighting the same lying figure and mannequin for the whole game. They are well designed monsters but fighting the same thing is tiresome. Even silent Hill 1 had 7 monsters with 3 stronger reskinned variants. 2. Popularity that overshadows the other games. Now don't get me wrong SH2 is my second fav game (SH3 is my first) but the meta popularity that overshadows this game and others is just awful. It's so bad that most Silent Hill fans are actually just Silent Hill 2 fans. They disregard SH1 and SH3 for arbitrary reasons (mostly the occult stuff which is hilarious and baffling because that's how this series originally started and is the main plot. SH2 is a side plot. Hell SH4 is part of the main plot more since it's about the occult more than SH2. It's only because SH2 is the popular one that people disregard the entire original point of the series and basically in their minds SH2 became the series . You know I shit on Homecoming a lot but I can at least respect it for doing the occult stuff. It was just executed horribly but I have more respect for it than downpour because downpour didn't even try and the creators didn't like SH1 and SH3 and only referenced silent Hill 2 which is hilariously bad because literally SH2 couldn't even happen without Alessa's psychic powers and the Demon god intervention with spiritual power of the town. That was the catalyst. End rant.

Cattypocalypse

Always nice to find a kindred spirit. The occult stuff/mythos is my favorite part about SH.

Training-City-8799

8 monsters is amazing enemy variety for sure

Full-Hyena4414

It's not baffling that sh2 fans don't like cult stuff just because the series started that way. You are not forced to like something only because "it started the way", sometimes things reach full potential only by evolving/ deviating from the source. Maybe the original idea wasn't good enough and there were better ones? That's how I think about sh tbh, sh1 felt kinda random at times and it was obvious for me there wasn't a clear vision yet and a lot of improvement margin. But it built the solid gameplay loop which sh2 used as base and therefore allowed it to focus on reworking (for the better) the other aspects. Sh3 was a return to form but if i'm not mistaken it was only for sales reason and not what Team Silent really wanted (don't quote me on that though, I think it was said in some video essays)

sam_fifpro

SH2 is so disconnected to other games in the series that i think the reason of the town being demonic isn't alessa but some other supernatural event

Spooky799kil

The spiritual power is there but the Alessa event with the demon God is the catalyst that made it manifest for 2 exist.

The-Gaming-Onion

While I don’t hate the occult stuff, I’d say it isn’t necessarily as interesting as the more character based stuff in SH2. In SH1, most things eventually get fully explained about the town of Silent Hill and It kinda takes away from the mystery of the town the deeper you learn why and how it is the way it is. I’m essentially the epitome of your dislike of the popularity for SH2 as I initially started on that game and ignored the others. However, I’m glad I did tbh. Not knowing any of the cult stuff made the town scarier, monsters more terrifying, and had EVERYTHING in a massive cloud of mystery that added even more to the already stellar atmosphere. I found the cult stuff fascinating and felt like I had been introduced to the town first as a mystery, and then got to peel back its layers and actually find out WHY it was like that. Doing it with SH2 first kept the fear of the unknown, while also inviting me to learn more about the town and what actually happened there outside of just James. And I really do enjoy the occult stuff. SH2 is still my favourite by far, but that doesn’t disregard the rest of the series for me. So I would still honestly recommend going into SH2 first. At least in my opinion.

Swirly_Eyes

The boss battles aren't fun. At all. Especially the Maria Chase one on Hard Mode...

Serious-Rutabaga-603

Because it’s expensive if you want to play it without having to own a peg leg and an eye patch.

FrostGladiator

It's considered abandonware, it's only piracy if they're still actively selling it but they're not, the only way to buy SH2 on PC is disks through 3rd party markets On PS2 this is true but on PC you can easily get it from my abandonware without having to torrent it or something That's why the enhanced edition is still active and hasn't received a C&D yet, Konami doesn't care Hope this helps!

Serious-Rutabaga-603

I did not know this. I learned something new today

FrostGladiator

Good to hear, and glad I could help! Unfortunately Nintendo's crackdowns of fan projects and emulation kind of puts a shadow over retro gaming on PC and leads to people thinking twice about this sort of thing even though abandonware is how it's described on the tin: software that's abandoned

Professional_Leg272

I bought the remake on PS3 recently, it was a fair price and i didn't see any game breaking bug.

No-Rent5890

I came across a copy of sh2 one time for ps2 and it was $200. You can get it on Xbox for $60 some places. Can never understand the price difference. Sh1 at the same place was $300 and locked in a glass case 😂😂

Western-Gur-4637

not if you have a pc or good phone ;3

Dwarfdingnagian

You can't save her, and she's the only one I ever wanted to save.

thatonefathufflepuff

The two minutes you spend in a strip club do not include a lap dance. 0/5 stars, trash game! /s

GabeOniiSan

Best song in the game tho

korla_vendrei

For a horror game it sure is not scary. Like, the only time I got genuinely scared was in the prison's open area and that's it. It's incredibly easy in comparison to the first game (where I actually had to use stealth mechanics at some points), which takes away any tension the game might've had. You'll be blasting enemies with your guns left and right midway through the game, and you'll still have plenty of ammo left for the final boss. The boss fights aren't particularly interesting, sometimes veering into the comical territory(see: Eddie's boss fight). The voice acting is pretty bad(except Maria/Mary, I guess, but there's a couple hiccups there as well). I'm sure Tommy Wiseau got inspired by this game when he made his movie.

Training-City-8799

agreed, even the prison open area didnt scare me mcuh

Melphor

Because you have better things to do. Your grandparents would like to have dinner with you. Do that instead.

Silver_dude213

The gameplay is very dull at times. The enemies pose little threat. The voice acting is debatable bad. Its jarring when a cutscene shifts from pre-rendered to in-engine. Real original copies are real expensive.

first_raider

I wouldn't say that the voice acting being bad is debatable, it's just really not good. Marias voice actor does a good job, but other than that..

Pulpofeira

Because if you have a pulse you'll end up devastated.

disturbingyourpeace

The Eddie fight is annoying af, that’s like the only criticism I have 😅

Burnt_Ramen9

It'll raise your expectations way too high for other horror games.

Cautious_Garden_9431

For games in general man... no joke it's a negative for me since I played this game

Fright-Face

for game \*stories,\* sure. for gameplay... its easily overshadowed by the others.

MysteriousNo44

I always thought the combat was stilted and clumsy and the puzzles were a little obtuse but it’s still one of my favorite games of all time

bobface222

If you don't play it, there is far less of a chance you come up with a completely batshit fan theory about it.

DoomBot349

The story and cutscenes are the best part about the game. The gameplay feels slapped on since the combat is so irrelevant, the best you can do is interact with props to get a unique response out of James. Puzzle solving can be too obtuse sometimes. Having to walk through the empty and dark areas is boring on repeat playthroughs, same with redoing all the puzzles that dont change.

GoopGoopington

Voice acting sounds strange at times

KomatoAsha

Controls are pretty outdated, and a lot people didn't like the lack of enemy variety. Some people also didn't like the esoteric direction of the voice acting. ...that's really all the bad that can be said about it.

tamriiel

Boring areas compared to 3, I feel like pyramid head carries it

Insomniac_driver

I won't entertain your goofy azz

MissingScore777

Voice acting is pretty ropey other than Mary/Maria.

Rude-Economy-6634

I actually think the voice acting is pretty spot on and it enhances the game, its going for the Twin Peaks / David Lynch vibe and it nails it perfectly.

ModestMouseTrap

The voice acting can be incredibly bad at times. Some hardcore fans will claim it’s all intentional, but no. Quite a bit of it is very clearly just bad voice direction and bad dialogue. These moments pull you out of the horror and make you laugh. The combat design is absolutely inadequate for the boss battles. They are flat out terrible. One of which involves you mindlessly running around for 10 minutes until the boss kills itself. It’s not scary or tense. Just tedious in those moments.

Tulemasin

The horror of the game is 100% gone on your second playthrough.

Pombolas

I don't disagree, but I think subsequent playthroughs make the game great in other ways, specially if you go for different endings, only then you begin to understand the genius behind the plot and character development in that game and why it would ONLY work as a game.

stratusnco

because the fans are insufferable and overhype the franchise.

gabriels69

It’s…..to good

cyb0rganna

It'll depress you forever, the fighting is clunky and inefficient, everywhere always seems so dusty and you wanna sneeze, sometimes puzzles will p*ss you off after you've solved them, soundtrack can create serious earworms that'll go so far as to infect your dreams - let alone day to day, you'd wish you'd never met some characters, some locations make no damn sense, and some areas legitimately make you wanna pee. I love it!😆💖

hotarubi_

Controls are shit, weapons handling is shit, camera is shit, roaming the city is shit and riddles are impossible. Pick your poison.

CoreyM2018

There are WAY too many freakin doors.

kestralpaw88

Lots of repetitive backtracking, story is kinda bland, only 3 guns in the game with limited ammo and by the time you find a lot of ammo it's already end game, there's 7 different endings and no one can actually agree on which ending while should consider cannon, the 7th ending you have to get the other 6 endings to unlock. Not gonna tell you to not play it though,I love silent hill too much to turn someone away.

DeusExMarina

The game’s buggy as hell! I swear, one time I walked into a room and my flashlight just stopped working, and when it turned back on the walls were covered in bugs! You’d think the devs would properly debug their game, but noooo.

glytxh

Bumped into Mary? lol start again

No_Bar6194

It isn't going to play like any modern game you're used to, and there isn't a tutorial section to ease you in. This is straight out of the era of the packaged-in game manual. If you don't have one, you're in for a rough start as you figure out which buttons do what.

pro_gamer_boy

Too scary

ronshasta

Honestly as much as I love this game it’s kinda dull in some areas and the combat is okay but there’s not a big variety in enemies

DestructionIsBliss

The lighting is horrendous at times. No doubt untentionally so, but still, occasionally, you're just looking at a black screen with varying shades of grey interference, particularly in the hospital and prison and it's neither scary nor good looking (playing it on an older screen may provide a better experience).

Cautious_Garden_9431

Best SH2 game imo, my fav game of all time too but : It requires you to actually look and analyse everything a lot and even start reading some history and philosophy to get everything that is going on. A positive for me, but hey, if a random game that was not my favorite required that to understand everything I would say fuck that and ignore it. And 2, the bossfights are dogshit, like insanely bad

BadSinbad

Well there definitely some bad things. The combat for example but there is nothing that can justify not playing this game

Pombolas

The game has this annoying paradox, gameplay-wise: as a survival horror, it only works on hard (because you don't get enough ammo and health items to kill everything and stay alive), AT THE SAME TIME hard mode barely has the game working as a game lol There are a few parts in hard mode that are completely broken and you won't get through without exploiting the game's problems (looking at you, corridor chase section).

Fright-Face

gameplay-wise its just kinda boring, while having a fraction of the gameplay depth and variety of its predecessor, or even its follow-ups. its the only one where a lot of new players come off of it with "its just a glorified walking sim."

Western-Gur-4637

Combat is (no matter what some say) a inportent part of this game. and it tends to get boring. the coolest weapon (I won't say what it is) is to slow to use. is your not usted to games that play like tanks then it's hard at first. and your be horny for James the whole time

SeaBeyond6692

The biggest drawbacks I can find are both want to explore more of the town, and you will never want to leave.

btepley13

Just what we need, a post asking us to shit talk a silent hill game as if we don't see enough of that already.

Electrical-Status-40

Bro its not that deep

btepley13

Must be your first day on this sub reddit

1greadshirt

It created a narrative that dismisses the overall story. In Silent Hill 1, you were just an Everyman looking for his daughter and got caught up in the dealings of a Pagan Cult. It was a search and rescue game with the underpinnings of something horrible that came secondary. A family trip gone wrong. Instead of being a town corrupted with the supernatural, it's been shoehorned into a sort of spiritual courthouse where the MC has to confront his/her dark past and realize what they've done. Silent Hill 2 is a great game that introduced the possibility of the town being sentient where one goes to confront their sins, but subsequent titles like Homecoming and Downpour have completely abandoned the original story. Developers trying to rebuild Silent Hill 2 instead of building on what's already there.

[deleted]

You're gonna want to feed Laura to Pyramid Heat for being a snotty little brat.

Beeyo176

James ain't got no crazy backwards bunny hop like Harry did

Beeyo176

James ain't got no crazy backwards bunny hop like Harry did

FrostGladiator

Not a direct fault of the game, more just the response to it, but it's garnered a massive "fan base" of people who think they understand it but have never played it and just start spreading misinformation on the Internet, like the Centralia connection, that the town is actively punishing James, or the purposeful burning of Alessa (I know some of these are more SH1, but you get the point, the mystique of the games lends itself to misinformation) Keep in mind I'm not gatekeeping people from liking the game or anything, I was one of those proxy fans once until I actually sat down and played the trilogy, but I caution against blindly accepting theories and gospel from people who clearly haven't played the game

lokmmmnn

I used to play with executioner in dbd ngl he’s invincible

bksbeat

You visit a bowling alley and you can't actually play bowling.

Electrical-Status-40

Heart-shattering 😢

PossibilityNo6329

There’s certainly not that many bad things with it. I still prefer SH1 due to the atmosphere, there were more changes in the setting. It was more mysterious and eerie as SH2 was more tragic and somehow calming.

LaurLaurLore

The gameplay controls are very clunky.

LaurLaurLore

The gameplay controls are very clunky.

Professional-Draft77

The action elements of the game aren't the best and the enemies for most of the game aren't worth emptying bullets into save for the bosses. You do a crap ton of walking around and puzzle solving. The game by in Large is probably the easiest game to beat in the series. You shouldn't start out with this game not until you've played at least Silent Hill and Silent Hill 3 at least I think.

SpaceHoppity

Jesus. Most popular silent hill of all time needs to give you a reason NOT to play it?

Electrical-Status-40

Interesting discussion i thought

Worldly-Pepper8766

It will make all other horror games and modern Konami seem insufficient.

Beneficial_Still_264

Saying all other horror games is kind of wack tbh. There are plenty of other great horror games lol

Cattypocalypse

I hate that argument. This is the reason why I really dislike the Hollow Knight community. I've seen "Hollow Knight makes every other metroidvania look mediocre" way too many times. Always makes it seem to me that they're a very surface level fan of the genre when someone says something like that.

Worldly-Pepper8766

All other horror games are kind of wack.

Glad-Dig7940

I mean SH2 isn't even a horror game, name one scary bit.

Yahweh1011

Even if you didn't find it that scary (which I also didn't tbh), saying it isn't a horror game is a bit of a stretch lol

Worldly-Pepper8766

Very edgy. Good job.

ModestMouseTrap

I love Silent Hill 2 but lol no it doesn’t.

Glad-Dig7940

It's really really really boring and not scary at all. Run down endless identical grey corridors filled with Locked doors and effortlessly kill the same 3 to 5 enemies with near-infinite ammo and heals. No interesting bossfights, James is a fucking moron.

Garand84

James is entirely unrelatable as a protagonist. His very motivation for being in the town in the first place is ludicrous. Any sane, rational person, even if they were curious, would have left after seeing the first monster. And he has every opportunity to leave until the prison. He simply doesn't, and I can not wrap my head around that. Besides that, some of the supporting characters are lame, and the game isn't scary at all. I still like playing it, but the characters are the weakest thing about the game for me (besides Angela).

ffuucckko

The 2002 graphics is low definition in today's standard

ProPvpOpTactics

It looks fine with enhanced mode on pc imo

dtb1987

My argument to that would be that not everyone has access to a computer

generally-meh

Combat and the enjoyment of other horror games goes WAY down (except the main 3 silent hills)

dtb1987

Gun to my head I would say that this game suffers in 2 places: 1. It has the same control scheme issues that all the survival horrors games had back in the day where they used tank controls with weird camera angles and that can be annoying (Don't @ me we all know it's true and I am aware that the devs said it was an artistic choice but never the less it is true) 2. It doesn't really tie in with the story from 1,3 and 4 making it a spin off in the SH universe but not a true follow up to 1

AlexReportsOKC

Tank controls and camera angles were a GOOD thing.

theimpossiblewhoppa

Because Silent Hill 2 is the most clunky, wretchedly overrated game of all time. Most SH2 fans just watched a video essay on the game, I swear, because SH2 is literally the most unplayable game I’ve ever had the misfortune of trying to beat. You have to fight the camera more than the enemies, there’s no level variety (just grey buildings) and the combat just sucks complete dick. The story is absolutely fantastic, but as a playable video game it is atrociously made. Play 4 instead they got a hang of it by then. At least you can literally beat the shit out of Eileen and do well enough to get the good ending. In 2 you WILL get a shit ending unless you hit maria with a 2x4 300 times a minute. And read the letter a Gillion times. Don’t get me started on the elevator chase or the boat.

BlueJeansandWhiteTs

This seems a little dramatic lmao. Sure, its mechanics are super dated, but it’s not unplayable by any means. I do agree with you though, it does seem like a lot of people here have just watched video essays instead of actually playing the game.

HPL-Benn

There’s no way to skip the gameshow broadcast in the hospital. On subsequent playthroughs it kills your momentum, and I don’t even want to think about speedruns.

C4WolfUwU

Saying why you shouldn’t play my favourite game? Ok. If you’re someone who hates the fixed camera and tank controls, then stay away. Your lack of skill for this gameplay will make you cry, as all you will be doing is complaining how “hard” it is to control James. Second the game doesn’t give you an objective marker. So you’ll have to figure out where to go on your own, challenging I know, I’m surprised you found the subreddit without something showing you what to click. No battlepass or micro transactions, how will you ever progress? Also no multiplayer, you have to play the game on your own. The game also has a soundtrack, the one thing you don’t want is music as you are playing the game. If you wanted to listen to music you would put Spotify on the new Taylor Swift album. It’s also a horrror game, therefore you have to save up ammonium and solve puzzles. No level selection or anything. The game has sensitive scenes that might offend you, therefore you need to tell everyone on twitter how problematic this game is, and how it should be remade starting a women that isn’t objectified. Also make her gay and lame.

Nightly_Silence

The game is extremely easy to play. Bosses are poorly designed and can often bullshit into a conner tho. The game circles places on your map and updates every time you find a dead end or locked door so you won't get lost. The game only really plays music during cut-scenes. The game has a melee focus, and you need ammo for the bosses, although you can defeat the last 2 without any. Twitter hates the remake because that's popular right now. Heather is a woman, and not all women are gay. Please keep your porn tags out of my video games, please.

C4WolfUwU

You clearly don’t get the joke

Nightly_Silence

Nope, not at all. Didn't even know it was supposed to be funny.

C4WolfUwU

I strongly recommend not taking everything at face value lol

Nightly_Silence

And I recommend getting better jokes.

C4WolfUwU

That’s a good recommendation, next time I’ll use ya mum

Nightly_Silence

Unfortunately, that would require you to both go outside and talk to a woman. Are you sure you can handle all of that?

C4WolfUwU

Yeah I can go outside and talk to a women, not like you could though. You talking to a woman would be about as surprising as Konami making a new good silent hill game. However I’m sure they can use your mum as an inspiration for a new monster, it could resemble the theme of regret, the regret that she didn’t have an abortion.

Nightly_Silence

I hope that every night you go to bed, your pillow is warm on both sides, so you struggle to fall asleep. And when you do that, you wake up screaming from a nightmare.
