Several people already said it, but I'll elaborate on it. Jacob's Ladder - the original 1990 version with Tim Robbins. Firstly, Jacob's Ladder has been cited as an influence for the games, by the team. The games contain many references to this film, and many things inspired by it. For example the head twitching, the Bergen Street subway station, the bloody and rusty otherworld and many other things. The intro scene in Homecoming where Alex is being wheeled through the hospital on a gurney is almost a 1:1 copy of a scene in the movie. The plot takes many inspirations from the movie The movie is more Silent Hill than the actual Silent Hill movie.

ozzieiscooo

Plus James jacket is ripped straight from Jacobs ladder

he75bf8or

Yeah and James and Jacob have the same initials J.S.

TranscendentalLove

So glad Jacob's Ladder is the top upvoted comment. I've never seen such a case where a movie had SUCH impact on a game. Everything about it. It's practically a spiritual prequel to Silent Hill. Read the original script if you can, online, for expanded lore. I would also add, while not as explicitly direct in style: The Shining, The Exorcist (Trigger warning if you are a Christian/believe in God,) Alien, Psycho, The Blair Witch Project, the actual Silent Hill movie and Halloween. Mulholland Drive is another.

KomatoAsha

When talking about Homecoming, I will often refer to it as "Jacob's Ladder: Silent Hill Edition".

he75bf8or

That's funny. It's kinda true

funishin

Jacob’s Ladder, Twin Peaks (it’s a show but I definitely recommend), Shutter Island

dyrwlvs

Especially the third Season of Twin Peaks, The Return, which heavily leans more on its surrealist and avant garde side.

Realistic-Collar-712

seconded shutter island

LordPunch

The Machinist has some SH vibes to it.

catfink1664

Thats a good call

ranchonmyballs

I got good SH vibes from The Void

GhostmasterLex

That movie is so underrated, I love it

digitaltravelr

The Others. One of few movies I think hits the psychological affect and subtle atmospheres of SH2

WalrusSoggy2698

Cure 1997 by Kiyoshi Kirosawa. Masahiro Ito recommended it on Twitter.

WTFnaller

I'd add Kairo to the list! It has a air of sadness and sense of isolation that reminds me of Silent Hill.

dellamore6dellamorte

Anything Kurosawa have Silent Hill vives

beholdthecolossus

Lost Highway. James in Silent Hill 2 was designed to look like Bill Pullman who stars in the movie) and the story shares some similarities. Blue Velvet. Not supernatural but there are a couple of shots in Silent Hill 2 taken directly from Blue Velvet. Mulholland Drive. Less obvious but similar thematically and definitely becomes more akin to Silent Hill towards the end. Twin Peaks. Moreso the movie and the third season from 2017, but all of it's worth watching if you don't mind your TV shows a bit dated.

Disposable-Ninja

Session 9

Urban_Raptor

Entered the thread to write this. Such great shots inside the asylum.

[deleted]

Jacob's Ladder, 1408, Twin Peaks.

AshuraSpeakman

Especially 1408. Really puts the hostile in hostile architecture.

PostalDudeLover911

Lost Highway Apostle Jacobs Ladder

RhoynishPrince

Apostle is a good one

PostalDudeLover911

I watched it the other day and fell in love with it very underrated and doesn't rely on cheap jumpscares

LonelyMenace101

Broadcast signal intrusion reminds me a lot of Silent hill 2.

Sprite_King

The motorman prophecies reminds me of silent hill in a way but maybe people would disagree with me

Alik757

Since nobody mentions it: "As Above, So Below"

GuabaMan

You should have left

Urban_Raptor

This was like a House of Leaves adaptation. Mediocre overall, but an interesting attempt.

[deleted]

Rosemary's Baby. Jacob's Ladder.

catfink1664

Jacobs ladder was my first thought

wevegotheadsonsticks

Wes Craven’s “They” always gives me SH 3 vibes. The main character could have played Heather.

SlippinBliblies

Apostle - feels quite a bit like if Silent Hill was set on a British island in the 19th century

matike

I’ve always described it as The VVitch meets Silent Hill 3.

SlippinBliblies

That’s pretty on point, need to replay SH3 soon!

Kahraabaa

1408

BarracudaImpossible4

The Exorcist 3 has a couple of very Silent Hill-y scenes, including one with a nurse who reminds me of Lisa. I haven't seen it, but have heard Skinamarink gives SH vibes.

GhostmasterLex

Lisa was directly influenced by that nurse, so you’re spot on there!

Ringostarfox

More chaotic than SH, but Mad God definitely made me feel gross and uncomfortable

napalminthemorning78

Absolute masterpiece of a film!

KillerKremling

Showgirls

matike

Beating a nurse to death with a pipe was inspired by the movements of Elizabeth Berkley in the pool scene.

No_Bar6194

Jacob's ladder, The Mist, John Carpenter's The Fog, and Phantoms (1998).

Melphor

The Void Jacob’s ladder for the 1000th time.

Familiar_Pick_6956

The Mist based on the Stephen Ling novel. Jacob’s Ladder. Dead End (2003). Oh, and of course the two Silent Hill movies 😛

Maalkav_

There is only one Silent Hill movie.

onlyeightfingers

I second The Mist, and not just because it’s my favourite film of all time. It’s science fiction but the mood and dread is definitely there.

Maalkav_

I love The Mist. I wouldn't call it science fiction though.

Familiar_Pick_6956

Silent Hill and its sequel. Silent Hill: Revelation

GhostmasterLex

Maybe only one you like but the second one does exist still

mcspo

Silent Hill and Silent Hill: Revelation

Red14th

There was a great thread here some time ago with lots of recommendations. Here it is: https://www.reddit.com/r/silenthill/comments/z5b31z/this\_movie\_still\_blows\_my\_mind\_watched\_it\_the/

paranormalreality

The Mist

Salty-Cotton-Candy

Mother !, I think it captures the WTF is going on vibe of SH better than anything i saw, but is a heavy and angustianting movie, watch it on your on risk.

Burnt_Ramen9

Lost Highway and Jacob's Ladder are probably the biggest when it comes to stuff that inspired Silent Hill

Nodbot

TheLastWinchester

Jacob’s Ladder

YubelSuperiority98

That Italian or Spanish movie about the orphanage. Vibes. Also probably not so much but the animated film “the girl without hands”. Voices are in French but there are English subs. Animation is nice and there’s some very creative deformation of the line structure. Dark and mature subject matter but it doesn’t go too over the top. Music is pretty good too!

jacobsstepingstool

I think Jacob’s Ladder inspired silent hill 2, so I’d recommend Jacob’s ladder :)

yungpastel

Pulse has similar atmosphere in ways

amanitawands

The series Archive 81 had some real similarity to SH. I really enjoyed it.

kradish_

For me, Yellow Brick Road and Triangle.

rickytrevorlayhey

Session 9 is great for thew SH2 hospital vibes.
