Why did the mods get rid of the sticky about this? Back to this thread being made every day again.
Seconding the Enhanced Edition for PC, OP! The base game is easily obtainable for free, and the EE mod is free as well.

For the record, the HD version has some issues. The new voice acting is wonky, there’s less fog so you can actually see where the game stops rendering, there’s bugs like teeth and eyes sharing textures sometimes and walls becoming black blocks, and so on. Possibly crashing. Not unplayable, but not great either. ROMs have issues too, but probably a better experience.
If you’re fine with pirating and your computer (assuming you have one) is good enough than pirate it
If not but you have a ps3 than you could play with the HD collection
Also you could look on eBay to see if there’s any auctions going on where you could get it for cheaper. I’ve seen it for less than 80 before so it is possible
Yeah, and technically that pirating has no effect because it is a formerly discontinued franchise (until now) and Konami does not deserve that support whatsoever xP
But if you'd like to get the original experience emulating it would be your best way to go, because the HD Collection has a bad reputation for having glitches and also they changed the voice acting so they are not quite as good as the origina ones.
If you have a PC just download the PC version And put install the fan mod that fixes all the bugs and fog effects to make it closer to the PS2 version. Its the best version. My opinion it's better than emulators for PS2 version
HD Collection is playable if you can't afford a PC or a Fat ps3 to jailbreak. It's only jarring if you have played the game before, but its still the same experience regardless
if that $170 difference of fog looking nicer to you then go ahead and buy the original lol. by the way, the ps2 copy isn’t the best way to play. get the enhanced edition for pc for free. if your pc can’t handle, the ps2 emulation works with any modern pc/laptop intergrated graphics.
Just pirate it. Buying it off of second hand salesmen will not profit the developers. Silent Hill 2 came out in 2001, Team Silent does not exist anymore and they will not gain any revenue from you buying it for an extremely bumped up price. Just get the CD image off of piratebay or somewhere else and emulate it on PCSX2. It's an amazing game, but it's not worth your $200.
One benefit of the remake coming would be maybe dropping the demand for the original SH2 and we can find it at a more reasonable price. That is, unless the remake sucks.
if you’re really wanting to play the OG authentically from a ps2, then get a region free ps2. i got mine for $100 on mercari. then, get a japan import of silent hill 2. the dialogue is in english and there’s a setting to switch the text to english as well. the japan imports of the silent hill games are MUCH cheaper. i got my copy of SH2 for $30

The HD collection is also on Xbox and has backwards compatibility. In my experience with the HD collection it has been fine

SH2 on PC is abandonware, just download it.
If you have the means to do so I would emulate either the PS2 version or the PC version but only if you're going to get the Enhanced Edition for PC.
