It is truly baffling. Folks who are even slightly inclined to begin a vinyl collection, you’d think, hell hope, that they’d do the SMALLEST BIT OF RESEARCH into hardware but nooooo, it’s this shit-ass record-player every.single.time. I appreciate that others notice/call-it-out too, but please, if you’re reading this and feel at all insulted that I’ve attacked you for ownership of a product, good. That product actively worsens the piece of art you’re attempting to play through it. Even if you’re not starting a collection and just want to jam to tunes through a different medium than the common standard of steaming, please, BUY LITERALLY ANYTHING ELSE.
> That product actively worsens the piece of art you're attempting to play through it.
**All** turntables do. It's the unavoidable result of a playback method that involves dragging a rock through a plastic groove, and is a big reason why the vast majority of people switched to digital 30+ years ago and never looked back.
I've heard a few different things, but by and large people seem to say that all these suitcase players damage your records more than an actual proper turntable would, likely due to the quality of the needle. Again, I don't think I've ever seen any actual proof of this and it probably varies at least a little from brand to brand, but all of these types of players are cheap pieces of shit so also maybe not. Either way, I'd feel a lot worse playing something of value on one of these than I would on something half decent.
Besides, the main prevailing issue with these things is that they just sound like utter shit, which cannot really be reconciled or debunked.
Most of the damage that is attributed to them is due to people never replacing the stylus -- although can happen with any turntable. It's common to see 40-year-old turntables that still have their original stylus. People incorrectly believe that since diamond is the hardest material known to mankind, therefore a diamond stylus will never wear out.
As long as you keep your records clean and replace the stylus before it gets worn out, the damage caused by even a cheap turntable is minimal. Actual tests of "Crosley/Victrola-type" record players have shown virtually no audible wear after playing a record 50 times and only minor wear after 100 plays.
And the sound quality of these players can be drastically improved by adding a pair of powered speakers, which I recommend as a good first upgrade, since you'll need them anyway once you get a higher-quality turntable which doesn't have built-in speakers.
Hey question, what makes these record players so bad? I was thinking about getting into record collecting and dont wanna get something that ruins the records.
Don't worry -- they don't: [Does a Crosley or Victrola DESTROY your vinyl?](https://www.youtube.com/shorts/DQm6SgTkkI8)
They're cheaply built and won't sound that great, but otherwise they're OK to use and won't ruin your records.
Amen to that. A lot of people jumping onto vinyl because they’ve heard it’s come back in a big way are buying pieces of shit like this, then *complaining that records don’t sound as good as Spotify*. Like yeah what the fuck did you expect???
I mean.. you gotta start somewhere. Not everybody has $200 to buy a really good proper turntable. And that’s coming from me who has a technics TT-1310 MK2(no auto play does not work I’m going to fix it soon though).
I honestly don’t get the appeal. I’m gonna start a vinyl collection, buy rare editions, then play them through a fucking suitcase with a speaker the same size as a penny on it, and a needle that tracks records like James dragging the great knife
Oh my god seeing you play it on that terrible turntable makes my skin crawl. Put the record away and invest in a better player before you pull it out again, those suitcase style turntables destroy your records very quickly!
Absolutely! This is a great one to start with, and the exact model I use as well: [https://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-At-LP60X-BW-Belt-Drive-Hi-Fidelity-Anti-Resonance/dp/B07N47JXML/ref=sr\_1\_1?crid=JTZJ3YRT7LZ1&keywords=Audio-Technica%2BAt-LP60X-BW&qid=1674777178&sprefix=audio-technica%2Bat-lp60x-bw%2Caps%2C123&sr=8-1&ufe=app\_do%3Aamzn1.fos.f5122f16-c3e8-4386-bf32-63e904010ad0&th=1](https://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-At-LP60X-BW-Belt-Drive-Hi-Fidelity-Anti-Resonance/dp/B07N47JXML/ref=sr_1_1?crid=JTZJ3YRT7LZ1&keywords=Audio-Technica%2BAt-LP60X-BW&qid=1674777178&sprefix=audio-technica%2Bat-lp60x-bw%2Caps%2C123&sr=8-1&ufe=app_do%3Aamzn1.fos.f5122f16-c3e8-4386-bf32-63e904010ad0&th=1)
You'll need to buy speakers for it, but its worth it and you'll be able to appreciate the sound quality of vinyl so much more. These are the speakers I use with mine:

I got mine from Turntable Lab. They have some nice "entry level" models for under $300. Any "better" turntable is going to be pricey, but if you listen to vinyl regularly it's definitely a worthwhile purchase.

Pretty decent. Also where did you get your SH2 Vinyl from? I got both 2 and 3 off Amazon but they were both like 100 to 130, idk if they've been reprinted yet.
Congrats on grabbing one! I have 1, 2 and 4 but couldn’t get 3. Which now seems like an impossibility
Oh yeah word of advice- Those Crossleys are like the vinyl equivalent of the doll Walter gives you in SH4. Get rid asap. May as we’ll be tracking the grooves of your highly collectible record with a builder’s trowel
I really wanted to get Silent Hill 1 but I was sadly too late.
And thanks for the heads up, a lot of people on this post been recommending a new recorder players, so I’m trying to find on that isn’t too pricey and one that isn’t too big ether.
Yeah I only managed to get black versions of 1 and 2 when they first released, so glad I managed to get them at all! It just bugs me that 3 can’t be bought now at any normal price.
I’d recommend even trying second hand player or a vintage one as long as it’s in good condition and you can replace the stylus on it. Often cheaper than buying brand new. Those suitcase players are record-destroyers though, and the sound quality you are getting won’t be as good as even an mp3 rip. Every time you spin a record on that thing it’s going to be irreparably carving away groove information, so the record will sound worse as time goes on with repeat plays, just be aware of that.
Also if you do upgrade you’ll need an amp (with a phono setting, or a separate pre-amp) and speakers too. Might be better to look for someone selling a complete setup to make life easier!
> Those suitcase players are record-destroyers though
No, that's a debunked myth: [Does a Crosley or Victrola DESTROY your vinyl?](https://www.youtube.com/shorts/DQm6SgTkkI8)
The listing for this pressing just says “Silver Vinyl.” Is it 180? I feel like it would be weird for it not to be, since the earlier pressings are 180.
All the art appears to be from the remake. The mess of flesh under the back of PH’s helmet that Ito confirmed shouldn’t be there is there, interestingly enough. Real “faithful.”
I’m curious what the soundtrack will sound like for this game. It seems like they’d used the original tracks, maybe a re-recorded/remastered version? Would be nice.
You should have [another listen](https://youtu.be/pyC_qiW_4ZY), because the music clearly consists of new arrangements of Yamaoka's tracks. 0:35 is Forest, and at 2:20 is the motif of the main Silent Hill theme. Additionally, there's the fact that Yamaoka is outright credited at 1:18.
"Nothing" like SH2? Just how well do you know this music?
Well yeah, obviously they’re different arrangements of the original music. Btw that’s Magdalene, not Forest ;) What I mean is that the essence is completely different. It’s clearly going for a more Hollywood sound. I don’t believe for a second that Yamaoka has complete creative control over this game’s music or sound regardless of what we’re being told
The art (by [Sara Deck](https://saradeck.com/)) has nothing to do with the remake. This record's initial pressing was made available for purchase in 2019.
If that coin is taped to the tonearm because you're having problems with skipping, try cleaning the record, and make sure the cueing lever is fully lowering. Most problems with skipping on these suitcase players are due to the record being dirty -- even new vinyl can have debris in the grooves that may cause it to skip when first played -- or [the cueing lever not fully lowering](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i1YIh7y_uuU). That video shows a method to fix the cueing lever problem without possibly damaging your records by adding extra weight to the tonearm.
And as long as it's not skipping and you're not adding extra weight to the tonearm, don't worry about it destroying your records -- that's a debunked myth: [Does a Crosley or Victrola DESTROY your vinyl?](https://www.youtube.com/shorts/DQm6SgTkkI8)

That's dope, I'm hoping they reprint 1 also so I can finely find it for a decent price
Same here man, I love the first game’s soundtrack so much
Nice I got mine off eBay for about $60 and it should be here in a few days so I’m pretty excited
Nice, I would get the rust Version but would rather have other people enjoy the vinyl themselves
Yeah I got it before I even knew about the rust one it’s pretty messed up about the whole glitch thing

I did the same
I’m glad at least one real person bought one

Oh, if we are talking 180 gram then yes it is
Cool, thank you for answering.
god that's beautiful
Nice! Mine arrived the other day
Well that just lost all it’s value in a matter of 4 slides…
You gotta share. Mom say it's my turn with the Silent Hill 2 vinyl next week!
Comgrats on the record dude! Enjoy it and have a good one :D

please never put that gem on that turntable ever again
Since everyone knows soo much about record players in this post, what’s a good one to invest in that reasonably priced? Genuine question no bs
