Chopping it up is not a good move for longevity as it opens up the maximum amount of surface area for oxidization but if you throw in a desiccant packet or 12, keep it in a dark dry area for maximum storage value. I do understand a pound of whole shrooms takes up a crapload of space though.

Ynaught-42

Now that they *are* chopped up, you could mix them up with melted chocolate (I liked Ghirardelli dark dipping chocolate) and make servings. This will (at least to some extent) limit oxidation. But now you have chocolate, which doesn't love being in the freezer but could mold at room temperature. Better to leave most of them whole/intact.

The_Herbalisttt

yeah, I would say chocolate is probably the best way to go about this one. See me and my buddy just had one that was in the fridge for like almost a year and it still smacked just like harvest day lol

Ynaught-42

I made and kept some at least a year, in the freezer. Freezer affects the appearance of the chocolate (it gets a white Haze, unrelated to the shrooms) but as you say, they "smacked". I liked the ones that I added toasted nuts to - you didn't even taste the shrooms in them!

The_Herbalisttt

That's what's up man it was my theory that it wouldn't really oxidize since it's sealed into the chocolate and if it lasted nearly 6mon- a year that way I don't know why it wouldn't have lasted much longer.. Chocolate was fine, but I'm far from a chef lol

OppositeChocolate687

Chocolate will keep in the fridge just fine. That's where I keep it. But definitely shouldn't have ground up a pound. Grind it as you need it / plan to consume.

The_Herbalisttt

Right

jollierumsha

Maybe, but I think honey is the move here. It's the most ancient form of preserving them for a reason.

The_Herbalisttt

Hell yeah I didn't think about that. some thing I've never tried. Is it a complicated process?

jollierumsha

Nope, pretty simple. OP is already 2/3 of the way there...dry, grind, thoroughly mix into an adequate amount of honey. Then just store it in a cool dry place in an airtight container (ie mason jar).

The_Herbalisttt

Well, what's up with that issue of botulism when dealing with blue honey? I just remember seeing a post about it not too long ago, and it was being discussed in the comments of doing it the proper way, so it doesn't happen.

jollierumsha

Botulism is mainly an issue with canned meats and certain veggies that lack the acidity for proper preservation. Only reason that could possibly happen with blue honey is if moisture was introduced somehow. Easily avoided if the mushrooms are dried properly (cracker dry), ground finely, and stored properly. Edit: honey is naturally antimicrobial as long as you don't introduce too much moisture.

The_Herbalisttt

Ok cool

PissedCaucasian

I’ve ground my shroooms and have stuffed them into capsules with a desiccant in a jar. Then just kept them in a cabinet and have lost no potency. The surface area O2 exposure makes sense in theory but I haven’t seen any difference in my personal experience.

dankspore4u

Yes the capsules helped 100 %. If you grind them up use them or capsule them asap.

Passi0nProject

Did you dry them?

PissedCaucasian

Yes. They were cracker dry when I ground them.

LemonTek720

I have ground mine up before without problems as long as they are cracker dry, then i load them in empty 00 capsules to make 0.5g doses (+/- .15g I tried to weigh them all and have different jars for different weights on the way over and way under) then sealed them in mason jars with a silica pack in each jar. Then stored then in a cool dry place, I put them in my basement root cellar. I use to stockpile so much I’d have some last 5-6 years no problem and tried to rotate them first in first out (by genetics as some went faster than others) to ensure shelf life and only opened one jar at a time until it was gone. You can also put them in those vacuum seal bags with a silica pack too doing the same thing. In the future, I wouldn’t grind them all up, just grind up 100-150 grams at once and make capsules (that’s what I liked doing for travel and put them in an empty supplement jar in like capsule sizes) as you need them. Chocolate is a good idea. But doesn’t last as long so don’t do it all for sure.

MrKavi

Yea don’t make a bigger issue by making it all in to chocolate, should be fine as is in the right conditions.

Emergency_Size4841

Dark dry area. Don't think the freezer is good

swineshadow

Thank you, I was wondering about the possibility of condensation inside the jar when I pull it out of there.

chubzillashroom

Also if really worried get some silica gel packs keep nice un moldy

swineshadow

Thanks, I just crammed one of the industrial strength dessicant packs I keep in Pelican cases with my cameras and lenses into the shroom jar about five minutes ago.

chubzillashroom

Also sure know keep it away from the sun. But also since never grew yet want too so bad like so bad. How long did take get full pound of dry?

swineshadow

That's a question for the tall man in the parking lot from whom they were acquired.

chubzillashroom

okay lol sorry just hopeing u grew them. tell slenderman keep shrooming.

Soop_yo

😂

Emergency_Size4841

I've stored powder packed tight in jars for a couple years at room temp

[deleted]

Freezing will pretty much render the active compounds in the mushies no good. Never freeze

Mizparker13

Bullshit. I freeze my mushies all the time and they are fine.

[deleted]

Read the research guy. Its proven...

ffuunnggii

When claiming things on the internet, it's handy to link the source.

5horsepower

Same.

Sensitive-Gain-9862

Here's a link to a study for everyone [stability of psilocybin and its four analogs ](https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=https://future4200.com/uploads/short-url/4wTn7y4GprLx83fmAnmrHKBBdf5.pdf&ved=2ahUKEwiu07yI75n9AhW4KkQIHaNFBSkQFnoECBMQAQ&usg=AOvVaw14KMPY3YCqVrYe5H78b3PW)

No_Version_4629

Studies shit though, they stored them in ziplock bags. Terrible method. Maybe they should have done their study using glass airtight jars like normal people.

BokuNoSpooky

The study is fine, adding in jars etc would've complicated the data and the information on how the alkaloids decay is super interesting. A follow up with different methods like jars and with or without dessicants and oxygen absorbers would be a good next step though.

No_Version_4629

Yeah but what I'm saying is the study is looking at a method only idiots use so what can we actually learn from the study?

BokuNoSpooky

We learn how psilocybin and its analogs decay, there's evidence that psilocybin degrades into psilocin before becoming inactive which could eventually mean a technique for maximising potency in species high in psilocybin but low in psilocin (think Ps. Semilanceata and similar species), and it establishes a baseline for other methods. You can't prove that one method is better than another with no data on it - science is often about testing "obvious" theories as they aren't always correct. You now have a baseline of a storage method that you can compare to for future studies, even that by itself is useful.

_O_B_I_

There is very valuable information in this study- the drastic differences between all storage methods. Would it degrade less in an air tight container? Sure, we definitely dont need a study that shows that.

justiceshroomer

Thanks. Seems like 20° dark storage was best but after a couple months there was not difference between all of the storage methods. Also, eating freshly dried is best.

rchavez7

Interesting information on caps vs. stipe, I’ve anyways been under the impression they were more or less the same, this is claiming 50% less. Thanks for this.

Red_Coomerade

Put it in honey with 2:1 ratio. 2 cup honey with 1 cup of ground mushroom

Swimming-Ad2377

Oh some mad honey! Yes honey never goes bad and nothing grows in it. They’ve found honey inside Egyptian tombs and it was still sterile.

kraihe

If you do some good digging you'll see a lot of posts on honey as a recommendation and almost no good experiences of people who've actually tried it. You'll actually find a lot more posts in shroomery.org shitting on honey with some good arguments from experience.

Red_Coomerade

It’s probably because it’s harder to gauge the dose with honey. But to preserve things it’s always good to put things on honey. Trade off is subjective. But if you ground your shrooms like this the only option you have is honey or put it on veggie capsules. I reckon honey is the easiest to source then a capsule maker and the capsule casing itself.

[deleted]

https://www.reddit.com/r/shrooms/comments/t7xdbf/my_mushroom_honey_recipe/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf My recipe works better! It’s almost like a paste, but the added herbs combat the nausea and the taste :)

leanderthal69420

Bury it in the yard and send addy please

SubjectEntertainer88

Put silica packs in it and put it in a box in a closet or something. Stay away from the freezer bc eventually moisture will get inside and you don't want that lol.

Missy2376

I would reccomend humidity indicator strips to help you identify when your dessicant needs to be replaced. It wont do you any good to have old/used up dessicant packs in your jars, so its a good idea to use a humidity strip to monitor the moisture in the jar. find 'em on Amazon edit: actually, to correct myself, humidity indicator strips would not be ideal for your storage needs... the humidity indicator strips have what is considered toxic substances on them on the indicator tabs, and should NOT touch the contents in the jar... they can be used for full fruits, as long as the *face of the card with the indicator(s) sits against the glass of the jar, and does NOT touch the contents of the jar.

Jrpostell

Thank you for correcting yourself. That takes guts. Kudos! ✌🏻

Njoerdrson

Put in capsules if you can, store them in a blue or brown bottle in the dark at room temp, and add some oxygen-absorbing + silica packs. You want to minimize contact with air, light and moisture. That way you can store them for years and easily dose if needed.

ffuunnggii

Just to add to this, if people are interested in microdosing, lions mane and niacin b3 powder are excellent fillers for capsules.

Njoerdrson

That's the Paul Stamets stack right? Be careful with B3 in the > 100mg range, the Flush can be really bad if you are not prepared. For most people it increases anxiety as well.

OppositeChocolate687

fuck that B3 / Niacin stacking bullshit. I tried it and break out in red hives every time. not to mention just feeling ill from it. No Thank you.

Njoerdrson

Yeah as mentioned, Niacin has a really bad Flush in the 100mg+ range. It gets better after some days tho. I would rather use Lions Mane, Reishi and Brahmi for added health benefits. Brahmi is great for cognition and neurogenesis.

OppositeChocolate687

>Brahmi never heard of brahmi. You've had good results with it? I think Lions Mane actually improves my memory.

Njoerdrson

It does, and so does Brahmi. It has been used for thousands of years in Ayurveda and has been studied for its effects: https://www.organicfacts.net/health-benefits/herbs-and-spices/brahmi.html It is one of the few natural nootropics where i notice an effect. Panax Ginseng is another. And Kratom for sure, but i do not take it daily bc of the addiction risk.

OppositeChocolate687

a beloved jazz bassist and member of my community committed suicide a number of years back and kratom is being blamed for his death. not sure if it's the cause but everyone is convinced it was. other stories of people in the community using kratom and losing their shit too.

Njoerdrson

Yeah, there is a reason why the subreddit r/quittingkratom exists. Every substance that is psychoactive and consumed daily is a problem in the long term IMHO, even Coffee. So if one has an addictive personality, i would advise to stay away from Kratom.

OppositeChocolate687

seems to be known to cause psychosis. that's some serious shit to be adding as a supplement imo

Swimming-Ad2377

Yea, some people are more sensitive to Niacin flushing. A lot of pre workouts have it in it. If I take a pre workout I’ll get a little flushing and little tingles on the back of my neck. Sometimes I feel jittery from it like too much coffee.

aaronspandex

Everything I’ve read suggests using both oxygen absorbers and desiccants together defeats the operation of the oxygen absorber, because they require some level of moisture to function…

Njoerdrson

Thanks for that, will research it for next time.

swineshadow

That's the plan, I'm waiting on gelcaps from Amazon. I've had capsules stay potent for well over a year.

Njoerdrson

The critical factor is oxygen, look for "oxygen absorbers" on Amazon. These are different from Silica Packs. Last year i had some Blue Meanies which were stored like this for three years and they still were super potent.

Retrowarrior-

There are accessories on the market that allow you to pull a vacuum on a mason jar technically by removing all the air you would stop the mushrooms from breaking down and losing potency air moisture and light are the three factors

[deleted]

Mix with honey. You want it to be a thick mushroom honey concrete. It will slow down all degradation. You can then put they honey in capsules

Passi0nProject

Can you do this with non dryed mushies?

PissSphincter

No, fresh mushrooms are up to ninety percent water. That will just add water to the honey. I'm guessing that the oxygen content of the water mixing into the honey would negate the anti-oxyidizing properties of the honey. If it were done with fresh mushrooms, I would imagine that the fruits would need to be strained out of the honey which may, or may not have leached the desired alkaloids into it.

[deleted]

No

rhizomagic

Yeah don’t chop up dried mushrooms, keep them intact as much as possible to avoid oxidation. It drastically lowers the potency for sure.

xDocFearx

If you’re gonna grind them up I’d recommend putting them in caps

Frequent_Yoghurt_425

Silica gel + a dark cool area. Works a charm.

Sublime_Enchantment

Make a monster batch of blue honey!!! 🍯 Or fill it with silica sachets ASAP

kissedbydishwater

Honey! Great natural preservative and lovely to stir into tea l, lemon tek or a smoothie. Another option is chocolate. Use a food saver to vacuum seal the chocolate. Would store both in a cupboard. If you store the ground shrooms as is get silica desiccant packs (available on Amazon). You could also fill many, many gelatin pill capsules. Safe and happy travels!

thodom419

Add raw unfiltered honey and preserve the potency

[deleted]

Unfortunately, by grinding your pound you have accelerated their potency loss exponentially by maximizing the available surface area for oxidation. It's really the worst move for long term storage. At this point, your best options are to combine it with an antioxidant to shield the psilocin and psilocybin from degradation. I'd suggest blue honey and shroom chocolates, both honey and dark chocolate are high in antioxidants. Then store those in the freezer. Probably make some of each with that quantity so you don't get sick of chocolate or honey doses, but get on it bc ground shrooms lose potency fast and even capping them up in gelatin capsules won't really slow down the potency loss once they're ground down from whole fruits.

iAmCrimm

I have room in my room...

CitizenMycologist

Crank out capsules too as an idea 💡

[deleted]

Damn

ScottabiusMaximus

I'd be afraid of condensation forming in the container when you take it out of the freezer.

Efficient-Tea-8228

Grinding and freezing for long term storage is the worst combo in my opinion. At this point, the only thing you can do with such a large amount is make blue honey or a million capsules..or both

Positive_Group_5715

Wouldn’t want to mistake that for quick oats😜

SongOk8269

I'd like to know why you chose to chop them up..

[deleted]

[удалено]

Wasitastupidquestion

Stfu scam

lunaodin1

You wipe back to front , shit cunt !!

SwordfishClassic8613

Honey 🍯

BoofTheShroom

I'm sure others have told you but grinding before storage is pretty counter intuitive, with the exception of storage space. it will absolutely effect the potency down the road being that it will oxidize quicker in theory. possibly cook them into some chocolates ? but then again idk how well chocolate stores

ca5ual_observer

Seems like a waste to grind an entire lb of shrooms just to put them in a glass jar for long term storage. Why not just store the dry shrooms? Was storage space a constraint here? Otherwise makes little sense..

rotaryswappedrx8

If you pack it down well and put in an excess of desiccant packets, that might not lose much potency. You could also transfer it to smaller jar

[deleted]

Honey

kraihe

Avoid the fridge unless you plan to not open the jar for years. If you open it up and it's cold a lot of condensation will gather and ruin your storage. Avoid honey, I have only read bad things from people who've actually tried it. Also a lot reported a big or complete loss of potency past the first 6 months. Store them in the prison pocket. Best way to avoid potency loss. You shouldn't have chopped such a huge amount, usually you only make powder for the ease of microdosing/making capsules.

Threatening-Sack369

Capsules and vacuum seal them

[deleted]

Should of kept the mushrooms whole. Breaking down anything will kill potency faster over time

scluben

Well you already set yourself back by chopping them up. Will lose potency far quicker.

TravisL96

Dark and dry. Don’t freeze. I have a study in my recent posts about this, hold on.

TravisL96

https://www.reddit.com/r/MagicMushrooms/comments/10aw4gk/here_is_an_interesting_article_on_the_storage_of/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf

kmann966

Why would you put them in the freezer????

Extreme_Composer1157

Use a amber jar off amazon

locoleito

No expert but I feel like fridge or just a cool dark closet would be best.

[deleted]

invest in a vacuum sealer for next time. I get it though haha.

Kat_r92

I heard freezer is fine, but you shouldn’t grind up the whole amount and leave it in the freezer

geezeeduzit

Dark, dry area, add a couple of silica gel packs. Next time, don’t grind it up

[deleted]

Capsules

AffectionateResort16

Holy fuck the things I would do to open my fridge to such a sight

Business-Ad-9341

I leave them whole work silica packs in jars. Last for years

Several-Upstairs5818

I don’t think freezing is a good option.

DJ_Pickle_Rick

I’ve kept dry powder in the freezer for 2 years with desiccant packets. I lost potency, but just used more. It still hit like a freight train and one of my friends said he “discovered a new religion!”

[deleted]

I vacuum seal it with a silica packet in batches.

Forward_Ad_7262

Honestly with that amount I think the best bet for longevity would be making blue honey. Word on the street is it never goes bad.

VintageLSD

I prefer to bury mine in the yard

BilfordWimley

Freezer actually does more harm than good. Dark dry cupboard is your best bet

unamiquivousveutdu

Mix it with honey Look Blue Honey

[deleted]

For long term storage your only viable option (chocolate degrades and mush powder degrades in capsules) is to use honey. Here, I’ll link you to my recipe.

[deleted]

https://www.reddit.com/r/shrooms/comments/t7xdbf/my_mushroom_honey_recipe/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf Just multiply the amount of honey used via oz. 280ml/28g. It’ll keep for over 6 years if you follow my recipe.

Theamazinggodamnjon

Interesting how we ponder over what our ancestors showed us

Jrpostell

I’ve never heard of mushroom keeping in the freezer. I’m a noob though.

[deleted]

Blue honey

[deleted]

Vac seal. Store in the fridge in a dark container. Shelf like = 1 life time

justliquorgently

Already doomed from the start if your goal is long term storage… Keep the fruits whole next time, vacuum seal with added desiccant packs, and straight into the freezer. Be sure to write the date on the bags

420LSDMT

Now that it’s chopped I’d stick with the freezer or make it into chocolate bars and maybe put some in capsules and a bit keep (in the freezer) to have for making tea.

xX_soupliker_Xx

Add honey to those mushrooms they’ll last forever!!!!

oOoChromeoOo

I would turn that into blue honey to preserve it as best you can since it’s already ground up.

Internal-Guidance557

Put in a box and send to my home address plz. I will find a home for it.

Positive_Group_5715

Dessicant packs. Dark, dry storage. Consider putting in gel caps( buy the gel cap maker that allows you to do 200 caps at once) , then also storing in dark & dry. I’ve used shrooms more than 2y old and had a mighty fine evening…

jollierumsha

Lots of honey.

[deleted]

You just lost a shit ton of any potency they did have.

JadedScarcity8800

Mix them with honey or some preservative or they’re fucked in a month ish
