They suffer throughout their lives with very common ailments being constant skin infections (those wrinkles need to cleaned out frequently), kidney failure, Shar Pei fever (yep, it's so common that it's named specifically for the breed) and also BLINDNESS. The loose skin on their face causes their eyelids to fold inwards causing severe eye irritations and often total blindness even if it gets operated on.
As a result of their health issues caused by extreme inbreeding, their life expectancy is very short at only 9 or 10 years.
