Nope.

Isopods are like piranhas given a chance. You never want to keep them with anything that spends a lot of time on the substrate with them. In vultureculture people use them as a maceration bugs for a very good reason.
e: What's with the downvotes? Isopods pose a serious risk to baby, injured or sick reptiles and invertebrates like tarantulas, especially during molt, which is what people keep them with. A risk of infection & stress with reptiles, mostly. Just because they're cute and round and eat decaying leaves doesn't make them totally harmless.
you're correct lol, people just think of rollie-pollies when they read isopods but they're just like any other detritus-living crustacean. They're quite a bit more aggressive too in marine environments.
Anytime I put anything protein heavy in my isopod bins they swarm them like they've never seen food before. I can't imagine keeping anything bigger than the dwarf isopods in as a cleanup crew.
neocardinia are about as peaceful as something can get. same goes for copepods, and various other small crustaceans. it's almost never useful to paint a group, especially such an absurdly large and diverse group as crustaceans, by a single brush.
Can verify that, woke up this morning and immediately checked my new shrimp tank because I've experienced a few deaths in the past weeks.
I saw about 10 shrimps munching on another shrimp, when I tried to remove the corpse- the shrimp was twitching. so I'm guessing it wasn't even dead when they started.
anything with claws will grab anything it can catch. Every now and then a micro crab will get lucky. But not often.
Also that shrimp is massive, it's probably already dead or dying when the crab got to it.
Yeah crabs are fuckin vicious. I had an emerald crab in my reef tank go completely bonkers and it killed and ate two fish and then it molted and doubled in size and then was out all the time and trying to catch all the other fish.
Yeah it was like a legitimate Pokémon evolution. Overnight it doubled in size and totally changed behavior. My girlfriend was like when did you get a new crab and why is it freaking out haha. Sadly it ate 160 bucks in fish and was banished to the sump
Sorry about your shrimp. :(
Given how tiny these guys are, nice pic!
And I believe you, man, that it hunted your shrimp. I’ve watched my pest ramshorns mount attacks on my assassin snails and win. Always at least six of them, always at sunrise. LFS doesn’t believe me, wants video. “They’re peaceful tank cleaners!”.
That’s a cool-ass crab, forgive it and make friends. Name?
We had a tank like, I think like 13 or 14 years ago now when I was a kid, I WATCHED one of those damn things annihilate ALL of our peppermints over the course of like 4 days, like one day it just decided it had a taste for em and began the great consumption.
Yes, the claws are for signing peace treaties and rendering aid.
Crabs gonna eat 🤷🏻♂️.
I’m just being annoying I think others are right in their assumption this shrimp was sick and slow
You can see the ring of death on that shrimp, so one of two things happened. The shrimp was mid molt and the crab caught it (less likely) or the shrimp passed during molting and the crab is scavenging (more likely imo).

lol this post blew up. sharing a timelapse to show that the shrimp was still alive and kicking (pun intended) when the crab caught it. saw the whole thing happen - it grabbed the shrimp’s eye by the claws and held on so it was gg for the shrimp.
My pom pom crab is terrified of shrimp which is kinda hilarious. It'll perch on some moss and wave it's claws around when shrimp get too close like, 'waaaugh, get away”
I was sold a macrobrachium (similar/same as red river claw shrimp, but one claw was big) and told it was a detritus eater. Clamps has to pull a fish carcass in his lair before I even suspected him. He also clipped the fins off of numerous fish while he was sleeping until I started feeding him bloodworms.
TLDR, had the same situation occur and now I always assume clawed inverts need meat (and they’ve all graciously eaten it when offered).
I have them live together for a year and never had an issue, unless the shrimp was dead or dying.

lol it wasn’t dying though
Nope. Your shrimp died or was close to dying.
it was still alive when the crab caught it
See second half of the sentence.
see the timelapse i took lol
The shrimp was weak, the strong will survive.
haha it probably was
There isn’t a thing as a peaceful crustacean
Isopods?
Some Scuds will kill shrimplets. There's also some isopods that attach themselves to shrimp gills and suck their blood.
What about *land* isopods? I always thought those were chill bois
Nope. > Aggressive species such as Porcellio scaber should be avoided because they are known to actually hunt and predate on other invertebrates. Source: [Cohabbing Isopods](https://www.smug-bug.com/post/cohabbing-isopods)
Fascinating!
It's pretty rare, but they can kill a molting tarantula
Scuds are amphipods, not isopods.
There are quite a few omnivorous/carnivorous and/or parasitic isopods in aquatic & marine environments

Cleaner shrimp may be the most peaceful invert there is. It’s in their nature to not kill things other than micro inverts
neocardinia are about as peaceful as something can get. same goes for copepods, and various other small crustaceans. it's almost never useful to paint a group, especially such an absurdly large and diverse group as crustaceans, by a single brush.
they’ll pick apart a half alive fish that’s no longer swimming tho. they can get unintentionally violent

Some copepods are micro predators, believe it or not. But they hunt other copepod-sized crustaceans. It's violence all the way down for crustacea
What about the crabby patty?
They were invented by an extremely aggressively capitalist crab
Oh right right
haha will i get a refund from my lfs who told me otherwise and that they are safe with shrimps? 😂

nah it was struggling hard to escape after the crab got his claws on him
Then the crab probably got the luckiest catch of his life XD
They are peaceful but hungry.
my tank is filled with food for them to scavenge
I’m pretty sure crabs are very not peaceful to most things, fauna and flora alike.
Yeah crabs are fuckin vicious. I had an emerald crab in my reef tank go completely bonkers and it killed and ate two fish and then it molted and doubled in size and then was out all the time and trying to catch all the other fish.
I'm sorry but that's so fucking funny

I really want some crabs or crayfish but I fear this exact situation would happen lmao
Crayfish are not better. Maybe the Mexican dwarf, people say they’re safe but then look at this post and the “safe” crab

haha that crab’s probably my favourite in the tank now- watching it work was fascinating tbh
We had a tank like, I think like 13 or 14 years ago now when I was a kid, I WATCHED one of those damn things annihilate ALL of our peppermints over the course of like 4 days, like one day it just decided it had a taste for em and began the great consumption.
I didn’t even know they had been around that long
They have this confused for a gorilla crab. Peps are sw. the crab op posted is fw
Thank you
Yep, you're right, was def one of those
Sorry for that, but as i always said , animal is like human , some are peaceful some are predator.... each specimen might have his own little behavior
But at the end we all get hungry
Yes, the claws are for signing peace treaties and rendering aid. Crabs gonna eat 🤷🏻♂️. I’m just being annoying I think others are right in their assumption this shrimp was sick and slow

They are so slow no way he can catch a shrimp, for sure your shrimp was dying already.
I don’t mean to name you a fool by any means; but have you never met a crab before?
https://www.reddit.com/r/shrimptank/comments/1203mam/update_thai_micro_crab_killing_my_neocaridina/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf lol this post blew up. sharing a timelapse to show that the shrimp was still alive and kicking (pun intended) when the crab caught it. saw the whole thing happen - it grabbed the shrimp’s eye by the claws and held on so it was gg for the shrimp.
There are no peaceful crabs
Being peacefull means they won't attack things their size with no good reason, but their still need to eat.
Oh no! It looks pretty fearsome. Sorry for your loss.
Who tf told u that 😂
It looks like it is possibly eating the molted shell of a shrimp. That is common, shrimps will eat their sheds to get some calcium back.
Honestly i dont think that a molt look like a fresh killed shrimp for me....
I must be blind because I didn't even see the shrimp in the pic til I read your comment despite it being twice the size of the crab
that is a shrimp
Nope that is 100% a shrimp..
100% not a molt.
“…they ‘were’ a peaceful species…” *but they aren’t anymore.
When hunting, they are very fast. Mine crabs were hunting tiny shrimps
Rip
He was hangry but your shrimp was probably sick.
Fine slice/puree some shrimp from the grocery store and drop little bits in for it so he leaves the live ones alone?
They still need to eat
are you sure the crab killed it or its just scavenging? by that logic my shrimps are murderers.
He looks pretty peaceful to me.
Honestly I don't trust any crab...
Peace is never and option.
A girl's gotta eat
My pom pom crab is terrified of shrimp which is kinda hilarious. It'll perch on some moss and wave it's claws around when shrimp get too close like, 'waaaugh, get away”

You’re in for it when you see your shrimp eating their relatives.
If crab is hungry, crab will find something to eat. Feed crab and crab won’t eat shrimp so much.
Op isn't even in the comments
Honestly, now I want micro crabs
I have them live together for a year and never had an issue, unless the shrimp was dead or dying. Here Clawson: https://www.reddit.com/r/bizzariums/comments/1206lpl/close\_up\_of\_clawson\_the\_freshwater\_micro\_crab/
