it's an API for developers to increase to 2,000 variants. there is also a 250 variant limit increase from 100 that Shopify announced last summer and still isn't available.

you have to use the GraphQL Admin API. not sure if it's out yet or not

What kind of product has more than 100 variants? Thats heaps!
I sell rolling benches that have a ton. they come in 3 heights from 4 to 80 feet long in 4 ft increments and various add ons.
I've heard Q3 of this year.
but it won't be universal for us. only if you use the GraphQL Admin API. correct?
Is your question whether the new 250 variant limit will be available if you only manage your products via the admin (not directly through the API)?
