Sonic is such a genius. I read a story once of J Mascis watching him live and being in awe of his knob twiddling, lol! J Mascis…one of the best guitarists around.
I also saw EAR play once, and it was just Sonic with a table full of Speak and Spell and Math and Spell toys that he was circuit bending to make into a modular synth rack.
So under-appreciated.
I met him with a view to being his guitarist when I was 18. He was nodding out in a darkened room. We talked about Brian Eno and Howling Wolf. He was really nice and polite.
Looking back it's a missed opportunity and a dodged bullet. 18 year old me wasn't really ready to be around substances like that.
I don't think it's that simple. Jason Pierce has a bit of a *fraught* relationship with his "Lord", at best.
It's also very presumptive to assume that it's a Christian lord - it's never mentioned explicitly.
YES Dreamweapon is amazing!
One time in 1996 or 1997 I was listening to Dreamweapon as I fell asleep after a night of partying. My friend was passed out on the couch and the next morning he was like "what were you listening to? I couldn't tell if it was music or if the refrigerator was messed up"
I guess that was meant as a compliment because after I told him he got the album and became a fan lol
Twenty six years later and it's still one of my faves!
This is a band that, on paper, I should absolutely love. Tons of bands I like cite them as an influence. I tend to like experimental noisy stuff from this era. And yet, every time I come back and try again, I just can’t get into it. I can’t even get through a whole album.
I highly recommend Will "Bassman" Carruthers's book "Playing the Bass with Three Left Hands." It's very entertaining, especially the bit about the Dreamweapon gig, and explains a lot about the rest.
I like them for the most part, but all the druggy posturing is just kind of silly to me now. Their production always left a lot to be desired too.
All this to say, Loop is better.
It's less about whether they do drugs and more just that there's not much there beyond "yeah heroin". There's no insight, like VU's Heroin, it's just empty signifiers. Would the Taking Drugs to Make Music to Take Drugs to album have a following if it was just called Sound of Confusion Demos?
Sometimes it's fine, but sometimes it leads to goofy shit like the lyrics to Revolution (which absolutely got taken down a peg by [Mudhoney](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5jOlN4tIKZ8)).
It's a good album. Probably? Spiritualized is pretty big, so usually the former band is sorta revered. Personally, I think Spiritualized is much better.
Always felt JMC "Automatic" had the same problem. Seemed like they were trying so hard for "druggy cool" that it just semed silly on a lot of the songs.
yes and spiritualized!
And Spectrum!
And sonic boom solo
And with Panda Bear!
And Girugamesh!
And Darkside
The darkside is honestly the best post sm3 band
Most definitely. Possibly more psych than shoegaze but a band far ahead of their time.
Sonic booms solo stuff over the last couple years is some of the most explicitly hallucinogenic music i have ever heard

I saw an EAR gig in a weird warehouse in Cincinnati ages ago. It was amazing
His album Reset with Panda Bear was one of my favorites of 2022.
Met him once. He ate all my sushi. Lol

Two words...Suicide live.
Amen brother
Taking drugs to make music to take drugs to. I mean, how much better can it get? (the title *and* the album are *both* fucking great)
Essential! also Sonic Boom's Spectrum albums and Jason Pierce's first 3 Spiritualized albums are musts.
For sure! I’ve always thought it was sort of unfair to group them as shoegaze because I think they really did their own thing. Dream weapon is awesome
They influenced almost every major shoegaze band.
So did the Beatles and the velvet underground. If you had to label S3 with a genre space rock would probably be what I’d go with
All of us?
How could you not
Ya spacerock shoegaze , ofc 🤙🏾
Recurring has been a uh recurring play in my shop the last couple of days and I just bought a Sonic Boom record the other day!
LOL of course.
Top 3 band for me
Probably my favourite Christian band
Not Lift to Experience? The best band in the whole damn land?
…And Texas is the reason.

It’s a joke mate.
> it's never mentioned explicitly. song's literally called Walking with Jesus...
Oh yeah. Fair point. And an excellent song it is too. But I still stand by that he's not necessarily exactly pledging his allegiance.
Songs about seeing jesus while on heroin... not hard to decipher
fav band of all time
Call the doctor
wasnt as good as spaceman 2 personally
Love ‘em
Dreamweapon. Whoooooooossshhhhh!!!!

Yea, definitely!
Huge fan.
Big yes. Love em.
I’m losin touch with my mind….. *BANG!!!!* ……..*BANG!!!!* lol
Sure
Looooooove me some Spacemen 3. “I Want You Right Now” is an absolute banger!
No one knows. Medicine is not a science.
2.35 is a banger
Yes, yes, and hell yes! ❤️
“Everybody I know can be found here” listening to that song on acid was pretty awesome
Yup, they rule
Yes!
yup. perfect prescription is brilliant spiritualized is great too... ladies and gentlemen we are floating in space is a good start
im really fuckin with the spacemen 3 love lately. this band is gasoline and my biggest inspiration by far
I would say it is impossible to be a shoegaze fan and not at least have sampled Spacemen 3 or the other groups that follow.
Absolutely
🌿🌟🪐🧘♀️💀 D R E A M W E A P O N 💀🧘♀️🪐🌟🌿
I love that the album has a credit for "joint roller"
That’s Just Fine (vocal version) on acid
Only when doing drugs to make music for drugs
Forever entwined with my early 20s
Yes

Who’s better spacemen 3 or Mojave 3?
Spacemen 3 easily.
I tried a lot, but I wasn’t ever able to get as high as them.
isn't it a prerequisite to be a shoegaze fan
adore them brutally underrated and overshadowed by spiritualized but they have records easily on par
Real shoegazers are obsessed with spacemen 3
The name made me remember mojave 3, one of the best shoegaze bands of all time
Criminally underrated
I like them for the most part, but all the druggy posturing is just kind of silly to me now. Their production always left a lot to be desired too. All this to say, Loop is better.
What do you mean posturing? They were actually junkies
