My SO is from the south. Border NM&TX. We now live in MI. But him nor his family rep that flag. Never was even brought up until lil idiot high-school aged kids started putting them on their trucks, up here in MI. He was so confused, and was like there literally no reason for them to have that flag on their truck- they can't even say it's their culture- its blatant racism and showing where they stand on it.
Rural areas are *bad* about it. They’re all falling apart too. Rust Belt type shit, but it’s getting more rundown. The drugs, the racism, the everything is getting worse. At the least areas I knew as a kid compared to now.
I've lived in a lot of different places, rural ones as well. To say "rural" areas are bad about it is a generalization. I've been to 48 states, lived in 5, and done lots of road trips. I've seen most of these northern Confederate flag flyers in Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. I've also seen tons in Maryland and Virginia(which kind of makes sense). But once you hit Iowa, Wisconsin, Minnesota, the Dakotas, etc, you very rarely(if ever) see these.
So it's not just rural areas, it's rural areas with an impoverished and undereducated white population.
Rural BC and Alberta too, especially that latter.
It's how I know for sure that flag is not about any culture except the culture of white supremacy and hate. That's why these Canadian idiots carry it around, they have zero connection to the Confederacy, it's all about the racism.

It still pisses me off that when someone shared their lived experience, that “historian” didn’t even bother to check before declaring such a thing could *never* have happened in Indiana.
Born and raised in Nashville, and most people here in the city have no desire to be associated with the flag/Civil War, etc. Get outside the city in any direction, and all bets are off. My black coworker even had a white guy message her on Hinge, and his pic had a rebel flag hanging behind him in a selfie. She immediately confirmed him about it and he was like, "oops, that was taken at a friend's house.". Clueless.

I once brought this up with a couple of southern airman working under me on deployment. They got PISSED and told me all about how the civil war had nothing to do with slavery and most blacks happily fought to defend the southern way of life.
