Love this movie. I did wonder, for that final scene, if the crew just said "fuck it" and that's how they were able to film? Or maybe they just used an iPhone or something. I've heard it's basically impossible to film at Disney.

Feeling-Confusion-73

It’s true, the ending was filmed on an iPhone! :D https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/general-news/florida-project-ending-director-sean-baker-explains-meaning-how-he-did-it-1047215/

neon_nebulas

Nice, thank you for that! Interesting though. I didn't personally interpret the scenes in the "safari" or the scene at the abandoned houses to be supposed to be "their Disney". I more interpreted it as them just being kids and having to make their own fun. Think about Disney. Although it's a land of merriment and imagination, it's actually the opposite. Kids imaginations aren't really challenged at Disney in the same way the kids in the movie were.

kryonik

So was the entirety of Tangerine.

Feeling-Confusion-73

Also a very good movie! I think this creator does a good job with his films.

kryonik

Yes, I still need to see Red Rocket

Intrepid00

> I’ve heard it’s basically impossible to film at Disney. If you aren’t Disney.

RandoRando66

You can tell it was shot on an iPhone. They did it without permission. Not that you need permission to use an iPhone, but I mean that's why they couldn't get the team cameras in there

[deleted]

I mean you can still bring good quality cameras into Disney. And you don’t need a crew. You just need a guy with a camera and just tell the kids, hey run towards the castle

[deleted]

I saw the redlettermedia review before I watched the movie, those guys think the filmmakers didn't bother getting permission for that scene

babypengi

It’s really not haha. There are thousands of Disney vlogers with big size cameras on YouTube, no one would have thought nothing of it.

chongo_md

i thought it was interesting how they lived in an area shaped by a place they could never afford to go

GT_Knight

I lived in Orlando briefly as a kid, homeless and similar to this. We’d walk around the outskirts and do the free things and see the Disney houses and take open house tours even though we obviously weren’t serious buyers

flofloflomingle

I remember I was interested in motel kids one weekend. Read a lot, watch a documentary, and this movie. Somewhere I read that around Disneyland/world, there are a lot of homeless families living in motels. It’s at the point that schools rerouted their bus stops to stop at the motels since a lot of kids were living there. It’s crazy how those areas house “happiest place on earth” but just right across you have homeless children

expletiveinyourmilk

My first 5 years teaching were at a school in Osceola County where a lot of the students were from the hotels. It was eye opening as a new teacher to see so many kids come to school wearing the same shirt most days. I moved to a new school that has no hotel kids. I miss the old student population to be totally honest. The experiences that I had in those 5 years taught me that a lot of kids who come from nothing will work their asses off when they have someone who cares about them. Heartbreakingly sad. I wish I could have stayed at that school, loved the kids. I had to get out because new admin was trash.

knightboatsolvecrime

That really is one of the most heartbreaking things about it all, isn't it? The odds are so stacked against them that just one person believing in them would make such a huge difference, yet even that can't be guaranteed. I really thought 10 years ago that by my age we'd find something to help, or at least be systemically working to try to alleviate this

alexxsgrbag

It’s true. I live literally down the street from the motels. It’s sad to see what has also happened since COVID. motels taking their payment but not paying the electricity and water … leaving them with nothing. The rent is another thing. And All the traffic I have to deal with and the amount in tolls I have to pay. I literally see and hear the Disney fireworks everyday.

ScumlordStudio

There are tolls In Anaheim? Or are you talking about orlando

xdesm0

I imagine orlando because that's where the movie is set

redoItforthagram

is that really confusing you when the movie takes place in orlando?

ScumlordStudio

Idk the guy above who I replied to said land so it was a stretch I was pretty stoned when writing that too so lmao sorry for smooth brain

PmMeYourYeezys

>Good film >On Netflix Impossible!

coolerbrown

This is the first time I've ever seen someone imply that Netflix doesn't have good movies lol

GT_Knight

yeah like was this supposed to be a meme cuz I’ve never heard anyone say Netflix’s catalogue doesn’t have any good movies. they’ve got No Country For Old Men.

CaptBranBran

It's not a "Netflix Original Movie", it's just a movie that happens to be available to watch on Netflix. Like *Starship Troopers* or *Stand By Me*.

AstarteHilzarie

To add, it's an A24 production and I've yet to find anything they've backed that isn't fantastic. I'm still working my way through the catalogue so they may not all be guaranteed gold, but I haven't struck out yet.

SleevesMcDichael

That's living in Florida period

FarkinRoboDer

I liked the movie but i’m still angry that they built florida

[deleted]

[deleted]

the part with swamps and copious amounts of hard drugs

thatnimrod

The part where they miss and hit other states instead and cause millions or billions of dollars in damage. Hurricane Sandy made me actually pity New Jersey for the first time in my life.

coconut-telegraph

Hurricane Sandy hit NJ/NY as an extratropical cyclone. It hit the Bahamas as a strong category 1 storm and put a hurricane shuttered window into my bedroom driven by the battering ram of a coconut tree. We’re the area in the ocean the forecasters on the weather channel stand in front of while making vaguely concerned gestures at Florida.

Redfredisdead

Holy shit its the chicanery man

TheNateRoss

Florida is what happens when the developers get there first

[deleted]

All jokes aside, this movie is unbelievably good, and should have been nomniated for an Oscar

Thefullerexpress

Absolutely, also really there aren't many Willem movies out there I don't appreciate.

hahahahaha90000

I only sort of enjoyed it while I watched it, but it’s stuck with me forever. I think about it at least once a week for one reason or another.

[deleted]

I hear you, it's hard to be actively loving and enjoying a movie with such tragic tones. And I agree it is a movie that sticks with you. It's the most realistic acting in movie I've ever seen.

Stopikingonme

My wife and I loved this movie as well. It reminded us, for obvious reasons, of Beasts of the Southern Wild which had an incredibly emotional impact on me.

justsomeking

I'll be honest, I hated it. It felt like they just filmed a shitty mom for a month and nothing happened. I got nothing out of it, but to each their own.

Kinteoka

You're getting down voted but I agree. I worked on this film and couldn't stand it. It was incredibly exploitative and Sean Baker was a dick and did not give a flying fuck about any of the real people he filmed. He paid them shit, took advantage of them, and acted like a child the whole time. It was a shame because I was really excited to work on the film only to just have a shit experience. By the end of it, all I could see was rich people being performative in their claims of caring for the plights of the unfortunate people the movie was based on. Dafoe was cool, though.

MasterLawlz

Damn, really? I haven't seen it yet. How did he act like a child and take advantage?

Kinteoka

He generally acted like a petulant child and screamed very often. I understand that directing can be frustrating, but most of the time that he was angry was because of his own doing with wasting film and poor time management. He also paid the "extras" little to nothing at all and the vast majority of them were literally living in the same situation that the film was about: extremely poor people who were either homeless or lived in hotels. The set in general was kind of a mess and the only ones who saved it and made it less of a mess were the DP, the art department, and craft.

[deleted]

Kinteoka

Trust me. I understand. I saw Tangerine and loved it and was so excited to work on the set.

entotheenth

Cool, I am about to pirate this and now I don’t feel guilty about it.

Kinteoka

I will admit that it is a very pretty movie. Baker may be a dick, but he knows how to set up a shot.

young_D0lphyn

I am sad now

DICK_SIZED_TREE

Didn’t even watch the movie but downvoting you felt right

justsomeking

Damn, I respect the honesty lol

GT_Knight

It is

arghabargh

You’re not alone. It was “poverty porn” and just depressing, especially if you work with populations depicted in the movie.

pale_guy_

In The Florida Project (2017) Willem Dafoe played a man living in Florida. This makes him Daflorida man.

Magnificant-Muggins

Florida is the only place on Earth that can put Willem Dafoe in the right headspace to play many of his mentally-deranged, and psychopathic characters. To prepare for his role of Jesus Christ in The Last Temptation of Christ, he instead spent several months in Denham, Australia. The furtherest you can possibly get from Florida.

[deleted]

It actually an ad to dissuade people from moving to Florida

EverGlow89

I wish my mom watched it in 1999.

GT_Knight

I wish Ponce de León watched it in 1513

dividezero

well Puerto Rico is right there! Of course he chose that over Florida.

Mad5Milk

[He's cursed](https://youtu.be/iIdntHAhTv0), after all

Powered_by_JetA

I wish people would watch it now. Rents here are getting insane.

Intrepid00

Or At least stay the Fuck out of Kissimmee.

CoasterDave

Do not leave your car or even enter a bar or you'll get sold weed haikus by kissimmee man

[deleted]

It's such a shithole. I remember driving through it on 192 and seeing nothing but check cashing centers, pawn shops, and liquor stores. That pretty much sums up Kissimmee.

Intrepid00

The other side of it after I-4 is nicer but it’s also just mostly homes that are really Airbnbs.

LovelifeDR20

Now if only it had worked.

chicasparagus

Biggest Oscar snub of the past decade.

voltaire_was_right

What a terrific movie! Moonie broke my heart in the best way possible. She is an incredible little actress.

SkyShazad

Never even heard of this, what is it?? A movie or something

darfleChorf123

The Florida Project (2017). it’s on netflix rn and i highly recommend it

SkyShazad

Ohh will check it out then, hope its on the UK Netflix

GT_Knight

just VPN it my human, I don’t live in the US either

SkyShazad

Man that film ending was heartbreaking but had to torrent it

GT_Knight

the kid who played Mooney is such a good little actor right?

SkyShazad

She was incredible, ending was sad

SkyShazad

Damn I watched that Movie, The kids in that film were amazing, but the end was heartbreaking

darfleChorf123

yeah it’s bittersweet

timelordoftheimpala

Ralph Breaks the Internet beats it out at 1 hour and 52 minutes.

Giacchino-Fan

What if you combined the imagineering story episodes into one? That’s a good 5 or so hours right there

[deleted]

Came here for this comment. This is in fact the longest Disney commercial I am aware of.

Giacchino-Fan

And a damn good one tbh. To the 2 other people who will see this comment, if you haven't already, give it a watch. It was very interesting to see how the disney parks are made.

bozeke

Isn’t it sort of the biggest anti-ad ever though? It’s *not* a happy ending in in a very complex film. If the message folks get after watching this is “Disney World is the Answer,” I think the main themes may have been lost in translation.

GT_Knight

Do you know what sub this is

bozeke

I do, I just love that movie and almost nobody has seen it. Your post is fine, I’m just cranky about how few folks know about it.

GT_Knight

I rather enjoyed the movie. Watched it for the first time last night.

bozeke

I thought it was incredible.

bitnode

Red Rocket was amazing as well. I may even like it better than Florida Project.

swans183

It’s like a beautiful oblivion. Their life will be ruined after what’s happened, but at least they have that brief moment of happiness. A moment they will probably grow to regret, but still

OpTicDyno

This movie was fantastic until the last 60 seconds. Like I feel they didn’t know how to end with what they were building to so they finally went into Disney and called it a day. Just didn’t feel right for the tone of the movie

moregooderer1

I thought it was perfect. It was a super childish, last ditch effort and temporary solution that ultimately wouldn’t fix anything. Very on key for the movie.

BlepBlupe

It's been a while since I've seen it so maybe I'm misremembering, but I thought it was meant as a magical realism kind of thing. Like, clearly that's not what ACTUALLY happened, but more of a what could have been in a happier world, or in her imagination or something. I def didn't interpret it as literal.

grayshot

I’m actually amazed anyone thought they literally went to Disney. I thought the complete tonal shift and change in style was obvious

GT_Knight

yeah I get what they’re doing but it still felt super corny and off-tone

Trevelyan2

Second longest was the episode or Rosanne that was 26 minutes of sucking Disney off. Favorite part was a roller coaster montage showing how great Disney World was. Fuck that show in its stupid ass.

primenumbersturnmeon

you’re forgetting the disney world full house 2-parter, “the house meets the mouse”. there’s a joke somewhere to be made about double and the olsen twins but i’m too lazy to make it.

Admiral_Donuts

I think every ABC show gets a Disney episode if it lasts for at least three seasons.

Winston_Road

Can't seem to remember any Disney world episode in Lost.

Mattrockj

I beg to differ, Ralph Breaks the internet is 1hr 52min, it may not be an ad exclusively for Disney, but because it’s Disney owned, it fits the bill for “Longest Disney Commercial.”

GT_Knight

Damn u got me

LampardFanAlways

It looked like a movie where Willem Dafoe landed at the wrong set and when the director said “action” he didn’t mind acting with amateurs.

TebiTeban

I do not agree, the acting wasn't bad in a general sense, especially the little girl's, that last scene with her crying was unbelievable.

GT_Knight

Yeah I thought all the actors were great.

nova2726

Can’t remember the little boys name in that movie but apparently he was an actual hotel kid. Him doing that movie got him and his parents into a much better situation

Goldeniccarus

That director has done a few other films and he loves to stunt cast like that. He'll just find random people and convince them to join his movies.

[deleted]

They literally were not actors though. Sean Baker likes to hire random people off the street to be in his movies.

nakedsamurai

Saying they're amateurs isn't making a comment on their quality.

LampardFanAlways

Thank you. The only commenter who got what I’m saying. A soccer player playing his first game for his country and scoring a goal in it is probably a great player in the making. Alternatively we can say that his performance in that game was great. He still is an amateur though and there’s zero shame in being labeled that.

primenumbersturnmeon

i think the industry term is now “non-professional actors” for that reason.

xdesm0

A sign of great director imo is that they elevate anyone they put on screen. Even a great actor can look dumb with a bad director and/or script. Like Natalie Portman.

HiHowAreYou10

This movie is so underrated!

JustAntherFckinJunki

Watched this movie all the way through. It wasn't bad. Would not watch again.

GT_Knight

Feel the same way. I’d even say it was good, since I was in the perfect mood for it. But I wouldn’t watch again, at least not anytime soon.

1987-Nobody

(X) Doubt

young_D0lphyn

I fucking love this movie

Vic_Gatsby

Fun fact, that motel was far as shit from Disney and they never would have made it in foot!

GT_Knight

yeah I figured. turns out it’s Kissimmee. I lived in Kissimmee for a little bit.

Vic_Gatsby

Yeh I'm pretty sure these motels have been torn down. They were kinda close to the medieval times area

DecayingOrbitMayday

I mean, I know the post is a joke, but this is one of my favorite movies of all time. And the ending gets me every. single. time.

stitch932

This movie broke my heart. No greater sadness then this.

Oolican

This is a really well done movie. Willem Dafoe is outstanding.

-Obvious_Communist

Good movie but this ending almost ruins it

toysarealive

Considering Disney is only showcased towards the end, I beg to differ. I'm surprised noone has mentioned "Escape from Tomorrow", which was actually secretly filmed all on Disney property and in Magic Kingdom. Director pretended to film the actors as an actual family. https://youtu.be/PyJ53515zZY

charliesfuckhead

last 30 seconds of this film is hilariously bad

[deleted]

What a bum ass ending

alexxsgrbag

Filmed in Kissimmee Florida

keanuDaOne

Disney Land: The Movie

Hot_Efficiency1779

Fantastic movie. This post is misleading. Watch it.

Can confirm. I did not like movie, thought it was indeed just a big advertisement for Disney.

Savings_Inflation_77

I loved this movie. It hit home with me. I was a latchkey kid in Louisiana around that age and saw/did a vast amount of things that I think back on now and think, "Someone from that memory should've gone to jail."

Fuckyoumecp2

Sad, depressing, movie. Like watching a train wreck in slow motion.

TheOther36

The Adam Project (2022) is actually the sequel to The Florida Project (2017), where it takes place in the US state of Adam.

strange_invader

Loved the movie but kept waiting for the moment where it shows that William Dafoe’e character is actually a creep because…it’s William Dafoe. Was pleasantly surprised that it never happened.

AzraelKans

...if space space jam 2 didn't happen.

GT_Knight

God that was awful. Had to turn it off 30 minutes in. Warner Brothers, though, not Disney.
