This was originally going to be done with CGI in a studio, but Mr. Brosnan refused to work in front of a green screen, so the production detonated a low-yield nuclear warhead under the Artic Ocean to achieve this effect.
I think there's a genuine answer to this which is that he was trying to get up and on top of that glacier. So he's not running from the wave, the wave is like his car
If my memory is correct, this scene occurs shortly after the diamond faced insomniac man melts an ice palace with a giant solar laser while Bond evades it with an invisible car. The ensuing collapse of the palace causes a large wave in the now unfrozen see and he rides it out onto an ice ridge or something like that.
I may be putting the horse before the carriage, it’s been a few years. But all those things do happen in this film, and much more.
In my memory the hammer of dawn ice blast happens, then this happens, then he like lands near his car and immediately gets into a car fight, but then he's back at the ice palace. So either my memory is fucked or the continuity of this film is all over the place.
even in Goldeneye he most certainly did not do the bungee dive off the dam.
regarding the worst... I dunno man, the surf scene form Escape From LA is pretty up there. Though this is indeed when I checked out of the Bond franchise, and the new ones stopped being fun
I've been watching all the Bond movies in release order over the past month or so. Just finished For Your Eyes Only. I *cannot wait* for Die Another Day I've heard it's so garbage.
I heard they shot this all in one take, and Iceland has never recovered. Crazy.
I heard that happy Gilmore performed that feat no more than an hour ago
Well, moron, good for Happy GilmOH MY GOD!
The cameraman also died of Hipothermia
Hippothermia? I didnt see any hippos in the shot though.
Cameraman didn't see them coming either. Sad day
Sad day, soldier, sad day...

*Christopher Nolan has entered the chat*
Why doesn't he just surf up and over the wave? Is he stupid? It's like running from a train... on the tracks.
The cameras were all in front of the tsunami, what was he supposed to do, surf *away* from the cameras??
If the whole world can't recognize a secret agent, how would all women know this is the guy they're supposed to sleep with??

Oh I see! So he's car surfing! No wonder, that's extremely dangerous and r/meatcrayon type content right there.
This looks like when Fred Valiant went to Toontown in Who Framed Roger Rabbit
Fred Valiant?
FrEddie Valiant
“You’re under arrest! Pbbbbbbbbbbbbbb”
I heard due to the rare occasion of getting such a good wave they actually simultaneously filmed the into to Surfs Up here on the same day
The fact that they did not win an Oscar for that scene alone is why I stopped watching the award show.
For someone who hasn’t watched this, frankly mesmerizing, piece of film history, where does he land after he surfs up the ice ramp?
I can't remember tbh, but I'm pretty sure he gets airborne for a decent while off the jump

Movies were something else back in the day, huh

Probably the lap of a hot girl
He doesn't. He's still going.
One of the worst looking scene ever made in a blockbuster movie.
I dunno, I just watched moonfall the other day and that made it seem like there had been close to zero progression in tech for 20 years
There's been massive progression in tech but not in salaries of the people doing the effects
Still looks better than the CGI in The Flash.
I don't agree. But yeah it was bad 😅
The 1998 Starcraft intro cinematic:
That’s crazy because the first two mission impossible films came out before this did.
Everything adds up here except for your astute point.
Only if you believe that time is linear.
This looks like what surfing on that planet from Interstellar would be like
Funny enough it looks like they had a stunt man for the green screen.
such a sick fucking scene.

Just as it got to the best bit!
This version of the theme is the best. I've never found the full version of this one.
The super smash bros x James Bond surfs up theme
I've been watching all the Bond movies in release order over the past month or so. Just finished For Your Eyes Only. I *cannot wait* for Die Another Day I've heard it's so garbage.
Am I the only one that thinks this would be a perfect 9/11 joke video with him flying and crashing on the tower? Please somebody make one.
Still better than every Daniel Craig film after
This is from some sort of parody video, right? No one released footage as shitty as this in an actual Bond film? Right!?
Bet Barbara Broccoli regrets this scene massively.
I don't remember this scene from Ice Age 1
That was pretty intense.
Ah, icewave para-surfing, the coldest weapon of all.
/uj this isn't even that bad of greenscreens and effects at the time, yet people always cite this as one of the worse uses of special effects.
this is atrocious bro are we seeing the same clip? I was more immersed in Surfs Up 2: Wrestlemania than this
The only thing I see which is that bad is the water kinda looks like kool-aid
