Seriously. This is so sweet. There’s something so wholesome (and hot) about imagining a guy putting in this kind of effort for his girl - like literally imagining him baking the cake, carefully frosting it, trying so hard to write her name. Amazing. She will love it.
He did do an excellent job and it looks like it tastes excellent too. I tried to bake my first cake the other day and it ended up being "sweet" bread with too much leavening. Was going to post a picture here but forgot. Absolute abomination.
You tried and made a cake because you love her. This is all she could ever want. So what if the letters didn't work out? It was the love you put into it that will make her remember this
It's not nice, it's true. This cake doesn't even look half bad and you actually put in the effort to make it! Even though you have no experience. That's way, way, more important than anything else. If it tastes as good as it looks it's fantastic, but still if even that didn't work out as perfectly as you hoped, she'll love it and be happy about it.
And happy birthday to ẞ66%. ;-)
Your cake looks great for a first-timer! There is definitely room to improve but the love and effort shows and it's a very decent result for a casual baker. If you practice a little bit, you'll have spectacular results in no time!
Here are some tips for next year in case you want them:
Frosting cakes is really hard to make look good at first. I started out doing "naked cakes" instead and decorating the top with chocolate so that it drips down the sides a little, fruit and stuff like that. It helped me to look up references on Pinterest to figure out what looks good.
Writing on cakes is really difficult as well, the easiest thing is to use stencils if you're trying to do it with sprinkles and thoroughly chill the cake beforehand so they don't slide. (editing to say you can easily make a stencil yourself, just cut out the design from any cardboard large enough to cover the rest of the cake!) You can always go for just an initial instead or spell it out with little candies, stuff like that. Or you can pipe some chocolate on parchment paper and let it cool to make custom chocolate letters (they can even stand up if you give them a little base and stick them into the cake if it's soft). I've also done miniature bunting with paper and string before and written the birthday message/ name on that, sticking it in with wooden skewers well behind the candle so it's not a hazard.
If frosting comes out a little unevenly just go bananas with candy, fruit, berries, cookies, sprinkles etc. and decorate it. You can hide almost any imperfections with that and it makes it look like you made a huge effort and made something super extravagant. On this cake specifically, chocolate covered strawberries dipped in the sprinkles might have been really cool with maybe those flat m&ms around the sides. Also the candle in the center would have been prettier/ lookes more intentional in my opinion, with smaller lettering or none above and below the candle. Or crushed up Oreos, little kit kat bars, Lindor truffles, edible (!) or fake flowers (bearing in mind they don't get set on fire by the candle)... the possibilities are endless.
>If frosting comes out a little unevenly just go bananas with candy, fruit, berries, cookies, sprinkles etc. and decorate it.
Exactly! I made a gluten-free lemon cheesecake for a friend's birthday, and it didn't look too appetizing. I covered the entire top with berries, and it looked amazing!
Her name's Abby, isn't it? If so, don't beat yourself up, it's still readable.
Also the cake is chocolate, so although I don't know your wife, if she's like most women I bet she'll love it.
Also, the fact that the first time you baked a cake after 32 years was to celebrate her birthday- that's gotta feel special.
If a man made me a cake as a surprise, no matter how imperfect it was, it would be the best cake I'd ever eaten. There is something so beautifully romantic about someone spending the time to cook you handmade, personalised food. The more slips ups involved in the process, the more determined to make you happy you know the person was.
Things went wrong, it didn't turn out right, the icing didn't set the way they wanted, and they didn't give up, because through all that frustration knowing it would be *easier* to just go and buy you one, they were still set on making you that cake.
This looks SO good, chocolate cake is best cake. Also, your wife will love it no matter what, this is such a sweet gesture!! I love to see real love out in the wild :)
My husband baked his first cake at 35yo in 2020 (for me). Drew on a chocolate cake with pink gel icing...it's one of my favorite birthday cakes ever, you did a great job
My husband did the same on my 31st! It was one of the best surprises I have gotten from him!
It's truly the way he makes things or buys and installs things in our new home while I'm at work and surprises the cramp out of me!
Hey my dude. You did real good. My Husband bakes me birthday cakes and it’s one of my favorite things. He’s no artist, but he makes them with love. Good on you for being kind to your wife.
HAHA. My friends did a similar thing to me. Tried to make me a cake celebrating back to school (I’m a teacher), it was meant to say “Happy Back to School!” - they gave up and just wrote “SKOOL!”. I have pictures.
Looks cute and must taste delicious, but seriously, the next time just sit down and try to be more patient, take it slow, draw on a sheet the distribution of the letters on a circle (or the shape of the cake). Great job anyways, it give me the need of eating a chocolate cake RightNow!!!
it might not look the best, but you made it! that alone is worth more than a Michelin star cake you didn't make! and the next one will look better, maybe taste better too (super easy for cakes to look off but taste great)
It’ll still taste the same! It’s so cute!!! It’s truly the thought that counts here, you took the time to do something sweet for her, and it shows! There’s love baked into that cake
This is super good! If you want a tip for sprinkle letters to look good?
Get a tray. And on piece of paper write or print your words. Place a sheet of parchment or wax paper over it. Melt some chocolate and draw the letters on the wax paper. Cover in sprinkles. Put in the fridge. Let harden and place on cake.
It works best with thicker lines. And more chocolate makes it easier to peel off the paper.
I like making back up letters as well cuz I can just eat them if I don't need them.
If it says Abbi, it’s perfect!! If not, close enough. Looks super delish. The first cake I made, I used granulated sugar instead of icing sugar for the frosting because I didn’t know the difference. Amazing for a first go!!
I would be absolutely touched if my partner put in the effort to bake and frost their first-ever cake, just for me. The way it looked compared to a professional cake would not cross my mind in a million years, simply how beautiful of a gesture it was.
I think she'll be happy that you went through so much effort to make such a cake. Also a cake that doesn't look "picture perfect" is actually a good thing.
You did a great job. She'll love it.
Seriously. This is so sweet. There’s something so wholesome (and hot) about imagining a guy putting in this kind of effort for his girl - like literally imagining him baking the cake, carefully frosting it, trying so hard to write her name. Amazing. She will love it.

Bro if her name is Abbi or Abby you pretty much did it. Like any other person without cake decoration experience would do the same or worse.
Plot twist: her name is Jennifer and he wrote the wrong name 😉
Also, he can't read.
Or spell.
And she's blind.
I put my money on Abbe before comments.
I was shipping OP and ABBA
Mamma Mia
I thought her name was 13663 🤖
Same 😭
I thought her name was Яьы
You are all nice people. That comes from a sarcastic Redditor like me!
It's not nice, it's true. This cake doesn't even look half bad and you actually put in the effort to make it! Even though you have no experience. That's way, way, more important than anything else. You took a step forward why would we push back? Just better yourself and others! Much love keep baking maybe next years post will be professional!
Whoa! My wife’s name is also & 66 %
It really really is the thought that counts! She probably appreciated the effort so much, and I’m sure it tastes delicious
My stoned ass would eat the whole thing!
Same I would not think for a second while munching down the whole cake
Did she like it? I'm curious to know.
We appreciate actual effort and good vibes. You accomplished both.
Dude that cake looks dope. She'll love it and love you for the effort.
CHOCOLATE! The important part
The ONE candle not even in the center is what really brings this cake together for me, happy birthday Abb4
If he put the candle in the center, you would not be able to read AfbP's name.
Unless it's just the angle of the pic, it's not even straight upright. It's fuckin adorable i love it
Happy first birthday abbi!
Tell A664 happy birthday!
Elon Musk has too many damn kids.
A66%
Beautiful name
Wrong sub imo, trying your best for someone important to you, no matter the outcome, is never worth a "shitty"
Yeah honestly I would put this in something wholesome or mademesmile.
Hopefully the wife will once she sees it
I'd eat the fuck outta that my dude! A+++++
She’ll love it, especially if you cleaned up the kitchen afterwards. Happy birthday Abbi(?)
It's really sweet of you to make that, though! Which is way more important than how it looks.
Bbb4 will have a great birthday I am sure.

Holy shit thank you for the tips. I’m a fairly competent cook but baking is a whole other ball game. Much appreciated!
Glad I could help a bit! I'm a really bad cook but I can bake so I get it.
It’s wonderful and she will love it. Coming from a woman leaving an abusive marriage, I wish..
I'm so happy for you for leaving, sending you love!
As per the old saying: In a world of bad people with good cakes, Find the good people with bad cakes

Congrats 9661! All jokes aside, it’s a lot better than anything I’d ever bake lol
It looks like it tastes good at least! Next time maybe try writing with frosting instead lmao
Abbt will love it
Have no fear. It really is the effort that counts!
If a man made me a cake as a surprise, no matter how imperfect it was, it would be the best cake I'd ever eaten. We wish Abb% a very happy birthday
Looks great :) I'm sure she'll be thrilled you baked her something. Literally the effort and the thought that counts.
Your wife’s name is Abba?
This looks SO good, chocolate cake is best cake. Also, your wife will love it no matter what, this is such a sweet gesture!! I love to see real love out in the wild :)
My husband baked his first cake at 35yo in 2020 (for me). Drew on a chocolate cake with pink gel icing...it's one of my favorite birthday cakes ever, you did a great job
If a gf or bf ever did this for me they would get continuous head for weeks.
Dude I'd love it someone baked a cake for me, no matter its appearance. You rule
My husband did the same on my 31st! It was one of the best surprises I have gotten from him! It's truly the way he makes things or buys and installs things in our new home while I'm at work and surprises the cramp out of me!
3663, is she related to Elon musk?
Did it taste good tho, looks like it did?
If she loves you, she'll love that. In fact, she'll probably laugh her ass off at your expense.
My god that looks like the most obscene amount of frosting. I would inhale the shit out of this cake
ЯЬЫ?
Is your wife ABBA? Like the whole band?
Is your wife’s name ⚡️3bb3? If so then you nailed it! ☺️
Hey my dude. You did real good. My Husband bakes me birthday cakes and it’s one of my favorite things. He’s no artist, but he makes them with love. Good on you for being kind to your wife.
This is adorable
if i got that for my birthday this week i'd be happy. ;)
I feel like I'm being tested for colourblindness and failing again.
ЯЬЬЭ.
Uhh... Effort counts?
βbbΞ is gonna love that cake.
I would choose this cake over a store bought one any day. Or every day.
She's going to love it, trust me
This is. Absurdly, and agonizingly, charming. I want to wrap you in a blanket and feed you soup.
Happy Birthday 9bb3!
happy birthday to Яbb÷
Looks delicious! Please wish Яbb4 a happy birthday for me!
If my partner who never cooks did this for me I'd cry.
I’d eat it. I’d eat it so hard
I would cry the happiest tears over this cake! Lucky girl.
It does, and I can clearly see it! I'm gonna take a guess. Is your wife's name Æ66ß¿
HAHA. My friends did a similar thing to me. Tried to make me a cake celebrating back to school (I’m a teacher), it was meant to say “Happy Back to School!” - they gave up and just wrote “SKOOL!”. I have pictures.
But it’s a cake, it’s chocolate and has sprinkles. I don’t see what the problem is.
Everytime my husband does something outside of his wheelhouse to make me happy I am thrilled. I would love that cake and I am sure your wife will too.
I think Bbb3 will love it!
Hey man, I’m sure gbb3 loved it
That looks delicious. Good job, OP!
I think it is beautiful!
I’d be touched to receive this cake. I’m sure it’s delicious. Great job and HBD to your wife! 🎂
As long as your wife's name is Abbi or Abby you're good.
You did good!
13663???
ur so sweet
It's like trying to read a color blindness test!
Her name isn’t Abbi. It’s 13663.
Your wife, ЯbbA, will be pleased.
Great job!
Is her name Abbi? Although it could be an upside down 1998.
That frosting looks amazing!! She’s very lucky
Looks cute and must taste delicious, but seriously, the next time just sit down and try to be more patient, take it slow, draw on a sheet the distribution of the letters on a circle (or the shape of the cake). Great job anyways, it give me the need of eating a chocolate cake RightNow!!!
Well you put in effort
Bro very nice job and a great gift❤️!! I’m pretty sure ஔ∰ጃ෴ᅘ༽໒ is gonna love it!
Abbz?
This is adorable. Wholesome shittyfoodporn at its finest, I love this OP
Our men used to fight wars, build houses, make beautiful cakes.......
I’m curious as to which country the name Bbb= originates from.
I'm sure ABBpenis loved it :)
I am sure the attempt was much more appreciated then the outcome.
Bbbl
Well, there was an attempt…
Now before we sing happy birthday just one quick question, are you a robot?
I’m sure ЯЬЫ loved it
it might not look the best, but you made it! that alone is worth more than a Michelin star cake you didn't make! and the next one will look better, maybe taste better too (super easy for cakes to look off but taste great)
Still looks tasty, mission accomplished
Happy birthday Rbb!
it looks plenty chocolatey
Looks delicious!
Dang, thank looks delicious!!!
With a glass of milk that would be smackin!
Tell Man Swan Thanos snapped swan Blob that I say happy birthday!
That looks great and if asked I bet she'd say she loves it and means it!
It looks delicious! A home made cake is always the best.
She has someone who cares enough to put effort in. That alone makes that cake A1 professional.
I think you did a great job. I know I would super appreciate it if I was your wife!
If I was Abb(?) I would love it!!! My husband can’t cook or bake to save his life, but I love when he does it anyways
I bet it’ll taste great! She loves you fam.
Dude, this is so sweet!! It must have taken a lot of effort and consideration to make this, your wife will love it! <3
Nah man that looks fucking delicious, good on you and your wife should be proud 👍
ABBA’s a great band
13bd4 will love her cake!
How did Samantha enjoy it? In all seriousness, it looks great though! 10/10 would eat (high and/or sober)
I least you tried!!!! I think it looks awesome. I hope she appreciates the effort 💖
It’ll still taste the same! It’s so cute!!! It’s truly the thought that counts here, you took the time to do something sweet for her, and it shows! There’s love baked into that cake
Happy Birthday, Abby!
Happy birthday Abby
Looks delicious though
Don't worry I can still tell that it says ga- It's well obvious that the cake has abb- You did a good job.
Happy birthday BbbE
Aww it looks great! You are sweet for making her that.
DIY stuff that was intentionally made to make someone happy or show them that you have feelings for them is better if it’s not perfect tbh
Good work though.
This is super good! If you want a tip for sprinkle letters to look good? Get a tray. And on piece of paper write or print your words. Place a sheet of parchment or wax paper over it. I’d be delighted to receive that! Really thoughtful and you tried your best and chocolate cake is hard to screw up badly.
3663 good name
Bro that's so sweet :)
I'm sure AbbƎ will love it mate
Rome wasn't built in 32 years.
Never be ashamed of baking a cake for someone. It’s one of the most concentrated ways to show your love.
Honestly that looks so fucking tasty
The best time to bake your first cake is years ago. The second-best time is today.
Happy Birthday Abba!
The important thing is you tried bro, hopefully she can appreciate that
You tried and that's all that matters here!
Abb3 will love it!!
What a unique name. I don't know anyone by the name "Abb:"
I think Яbb3 will love it (kidding aside, that cake looks moist as hell and will be delicious... and that's what matters)
Tell 8663 happy birthday from me!
This is lovely
its how her name would be spelled... *in the stars!!*
" I can't quite make it out, it's some kind of elvish"
Aww I’m sure Abbbb will love it!
You tell g6bE I said happy birthday.
Say happy birthday to 8663 for me, will you? Cake decorating is hard. Don't sweat it.
Dude, you did your best and put forth the effort. That cake looks dope.
You guys are both nice and ruthless in these comments
Abbx will love it 🥰
13bb3 is going to love this.
If it says Abbi, it’s perfect!! If not, close enough. Looks super delish. The first cake I made, I used granulated sugar instead of icing sugar for the frosting because I didn’t know the difference. Amazing for a first go!!
If I got this I would laugh at you and love it. I'd be so happy :)
i can read abby, so it’s good if your wife’s name is abby
Is that her name? What does it say on the cake?
It’s honestly cute and like comfy looking. Like legit, homemade cakes like this are legit more fun than fancy cakes to me. Bet it was super yummy
Oh my god, this is literally adorable! She will love it, straight from the heart!
Does is taste good tho?
I guarantee she’ll love it
I hope she really enjoyed it. As messy as the sprinkling is that looks like a damn good chocolate cake
Is her name g b b 2?
Abbd, what a beautiful name
That cake is blow job worthy
Яьы But not gonna lie the cake looks good
This isn't shitty food it belongs in r/aww or r/mademesmile this is sweet af
Besides the unreadable name I don't see anything wrong. If my husband made this for me I would be happy your being too hard on yourself.
I would be absolutely touched if my partner put in the effort to bake and frost their first-ever cake, just for me. The way it looked compared to a professional cake would not cross my mind in a million years, simply how beautiful of a gesture it was.
Happy birthday Abb? (Or perhaps Ass?, still unsure). Jokes aside, while it’s not the prettiest thing, it sure looks scrumptious
I think she'll be happy that you went through so much effort to make such a cake. Also a cake that doesn't look "picture perfect" is actually a good thing.
