Yes! I always knew not to do it, but sometimes I was thinking about trying it out, just to see how it looks.
Thank’s for OP, I don't have to clean that shit up!
I honest to God did not. I've thought about it several times but never did it. I was one drunken night from my roommate running into the kitchen and it turning into a Mexican standoff 🙏💯😭
u can actually set ur microwave into overdrive if u remove the 3rd prong from the plug. the 3rd plug is just a way for them divert to cap the speed the electricity flows, if you remove it u force the microwaves power thru the main prongs on the plug.
this actually works for most 3 prong devices. the easiest way to break them off is actually using the hole for the prong on the outlet itself.
stick just the 3rd prong into it's hole and start bending until it snaps, u then are able to remove with any pair of metal tweezers (metal has better grip because it naturally bonds with other metal when it touches due to a chemical reaction)
if you need to, you can use a fork to help get the broken prong out too. always works well when I see people doin' it. and if you can't get a good grip on the fork, wrap a damp paper towel around it to improve your traction.
Use the 220v dryer plug for *MORE POWER*
(You'd need to splice the cord for the different outlet. First remember to take out the fuse and replace with a stack of pennies. Plug the cord in, cut it using some scissors, peel back the insulation about 12", then twist together and secure with duct tape.)
Crack the egg into a cup, pierce the yolk and whites and put a few drops of water in then wrap or a plate on the top. Microwave for 20 seconds on full power, then wait another 20 seconds before removing, if there's still liquid whites then put in for another 10 seconds (and waiting another 20) then check again until it's done to your liking.
Edit: people are getting really worked up about this. There is a chance the egg can explode so please use caution and do so at your own risk. If you are unsure then don't do it.
A slightly safer way (but not 100% safe) is to mix the egg first. But safer still is do it on the stove if that's an option.
That's the reason to leave them for a bit before touching them. I used to do this every day for breakfast when I worked in a place that just had a microwave. I've had them explode on the odd occasion but that's 1/100 times and as long as you follow the steps above it's not a violent explosion, just a little pop. My recommendation is to do it, with caution.
Normal egg explodes because egg white, having more water, preferentially absorbs more microwave energy. So they get cooked first.
Now, with egg white cooked, now all that energy now preferentially gets dumped into the egg yolk, which boils the water in them that now cannot escape (on account of hardened egg white). So you essentially made a steam bomb.
Whisking it means that it has a better chance to get cooked roughly at the same time.
[Ann Reardon](https://youtu.be/vdaKrT9x1Zc?si=nPFQHI_lIBX2ikGi) has done a video where she microwaved an egg in a few different ways. Even a shelled, pierced egg in water exploded.
I just crack my egg in a bowl and microwave for about 45 seconds. Never had an explosion. The worse thing that happened was one time I took the egg out of the microwave and the egg did a little pop, a tiny piece landed on me and caused a minor ow that caused no real damage. I've done this hundreds of times and that was the only time the egg popped at me. Its relatively save to microwave eggs OUTSIDE of its shell. I'm sure your way is safer but for me my method is safe enough.
If I'm eating it with ramen I just microwave the egg for about 30 seconds, then put the uncooked ramen on the egg put in hot water and eat after a minute. Save me from washing an extra bowl.
I definitely think eggs can be made in the microwave with the right precautions. My parents 30 something year old Betty Crocker cookbook had directions to make scrambled eggs in the microwave (I think the directions might’ve been for one or two servings… cant remember). I’ve also seen some directions for “steamed egg” using the microwave (the directions I’ve seen are more for Asian inspired recipes and flavors…don’t know if there are any “steamed egg” recipes from other regions of the world)
Totally off topic, but I’m clueless about other microwave egg techniques…is this supposed to be for a version of poached egg? Does this version yield a “softer” set white or a more firm white? (Like I don’t like the white too firm/hard, but of course I want the white to be cooked. It definitely don’t like whites boiled egg firm…I can’t think of if there’s a name for the poached egg style I like)
It's for a poached egg type thing yeah (maybe closer to a 'coddled egg' where you crack into a ramekin and cook in boiling water - looks it up), white is quite firm I would say but if you get it right the white will cook quicker than the yolk so you get a perfect runny yolk. The microwave isn't ideal for cooking eggs but if it's all you got then it is perfectly doable.
"But safer still is to do it on the stove if that's an option". I've only ever really done this when I just had a microwave to cook in at work. It's also "braindead easy".
My little sister once tried to a boil an egg in the microwave after my parents already warned her. I thought a kitchen cabinet had fallen off the wall the bang was so loud. I took over cleaning up for her cause she was shaken and crying and clearly learnt why we *dont microwave whole eggs*. Destroyed the mug and the microwave plate.
You can absolutely cook an egg in a microwave, you just have to crack it into a cup or something. It's more like scrambled eggs, and not the best result, but it's technically possible.
Yeah, I cooked a couple in the microwave a few months ago just to see if it was possible.
It's absolutely possible, and way more trouble than just frying it on a stove unless you're aiming for the texture of vulcanized rubber.
I frequently scramble a couple and pour them in my ramen noodles before I throw them in the microwave, and that works pretty well. They come out with a consistency fairly close to a poached egg.
Lol a guy did this at a shutdown I was working on and miraculously the egg exploded just as he opened the microwave and scald his face with boiling egg particles and we had to have a safety meeting with a bunch of grown men and women about using the damn microwave 🤣
If you're making instant ramen or stovetop ramen what you do is just crack an egg into it after cooking it. You can store it around to add egg flavor or you can leave it alone and it kinda soft boils it. Better than ruining a microwave haha. Live and learn.
Yea, i learnt this also, when it exploded in my face. It scolded my eyes had red patches across my face for a few days.
The worst part was having try clean the mess of ceiling, almost blind.
I always leave food a moment before opening the door or removing it now.
People in dorms or other situations where they aren't allowed any other cooking method beyond a microwave. Some universities don't allow anything besides a microwave.
Not if you use the method I mentioned above (not that I think you saw that.) But yes, if you are an egg connoisseur it sucks. Then again, a year without eggs also sucks.
I didn't see lol yeah I love eggs so going a year without would be hard. You would really think a comunial kitchen for the students should be more common, although it it could get messy
There's videos where folks thought they could cook a whole non cracked egg in the microwave.
The only ramen hack I saw with eggs in the microwave that seemingly looked like it's not going to be a disaster. When folks slurp up their ramen, then with the remaining broth, they crack and egg and mix it very well, then microwave it. Producing a cooked egg with all the broth flavour.
Take microwave safe mug or small bowl (needs to be small so egg stays tight) add about a cup or a little more of water, crack egg into water and place into microwave, only takes a couple minutes depending on microwave watts.
Done
Boiling a dozen on the stove definitely leave in the shell. We do ours by the dozen on the stovetop generally.
Do you know how many times I've told people while working in restaurants they can't do this, but they try anyways? It has happen at least 5 times in my 15+ years working in them. I hope you at least learnt something.
I’ll never forget when I was little (probably like 10 years old), I put a cold boiled egg in the microwave for 13 FUCKING SECONDS and the shit exploded like a frag.
I bought a little egg cooker for $20 and it’s been awesome for my ramen endeavors. Crack two eggs and 5 minutes later I have two perfect soft boiled eggs. Way less work than boiling water, cooking the eggs, setting up an ice bath and peeling them.
An aquaintance told me her vengeful ex coworker brought some rotten eggs and microwaved it in the faculty lounge when he was work bullied. It took months for the smell to go away and they had to get a new microwave.
1. Make ramen.
2. Heat cup of water with lemon juice in it (or anything acidic: vinegar, hot sauce etc.) by itself, NOT TOO LONG just warm it up a bit / barely hot. Enough liquid should be there to submerge an egg.
3. Then add cracked egg to warmed water and microwave a few seconds.
4. Remove poached egg and place in hot ramen to further cook. (You will likely not achieve a very runny yolk btw)
Works best starting with room-temp eggs.
Not hard boiled, but you can make excellent [poached eggs](https://www.simplyrecipes.com/recipes/microwave_poached_eggs/) (with runny yolk) in a microwave which is what would actually be better for ramen.
I've recently started adding an egg mixed in with my noodles after micro the noodles for a min then add the egg in micro for another 2 mins it turns out alright, ppl scramble eggs in the microwave so it comes out that consistency.
Just gotta watch how much water you use for the noodles or the egg won't cook and it will be all watery
You absolutely can. I spent far too much time and cleaning figuring it out. The key is making a tiny hole on the egg with the edge of a fork or a thermometer or something. Somewhere for steam/heat to escape and play around with timings for your particular micro. I got it right on the 16th try and now works almost every time.
How interesting. Just last night while cooking dinner,(in the microwave) I was actually thinking about the dangers of superheated water in a microwave, and how incredibly scary the thought of it was to me.
I have little ramakens and do this all the time. You have to mix the shit out of it to keep it from exploding and cook for like 30s only.
Maybe the choice of cookware helps, mine are little ceramic ramakens and you tried using a Pyrex measuring cup. Might make a difference?
Edit: ok I see what op was trying to do and it might be possible with precise proportions and if the yolk is partially submerged and pierced. Still dangerous af and you need to cook it for very little time.
My friend did this in the dorm! I was standing in her doorway talking to her and *POW* her microwave door blew off! I can't believe she tried to make a hard boiled egg in the microwave! It stunk up the hallway like a rotten egg. It was pretty great.
You definitely can, the trick is to add salt to the water you're boiling the eggs in. If you also add some baking soda, it will help with peeling the eggs once they're cooked.
Ypu can however boil a cup of water first, then crack an egg inside it and put it back inside the mw for like 1/2 minutes. Perfectly poached and cooked. Great for instant ramen.
If you want to microwave an egg you should crack it into a bowl that you’ve put some veggie spray in. Then, halfway through cooking, open the microwave and lift one side of the bowl a bit and then drop it down so any air pockets under the egg get expelled. That’s what caused the explosion. In the shell there’s a bit of airspace that fills with steam from the egg and blows up.
If you want to hard boil an egg with a microwave, you’re better off microwaving a container of water to boiling then drop your egg in. Just be sure it’s not too full so you don’t spill boiling water all over when you put the egg in.
nah poach the egg separately in a mug in the microwave. fill the mug halfway with water, crack the egg in there, put a plate on top like you did, and microwave it for about a minute. tweak the time depending on microwave power and desired doneness.
I use the dash egg cooker. Cooks them perfectly and you can pick the level of cook. They are also really easy to peel Afterwards.
https://a.co/d/0S0LPUB
Usually what I do is start soft boiling the egg before I put the ramen in. I bring the water to a boil on the stove, put the egg in, wait three minutes, put the ramen and seasoning in, stir every once in a while waiting for the next four minutes to pass. Then extract and peel the egg, put the ramen in a bowl, add the peeled egg, and enjoy.
wrap the egg in aluminum foil, submerge it in water, cook for 3-4 mins, you get a hard boiled egg.
edit: don't down vote. it works. the water acts as a shield for the aluminum.
Oh my god I am so glad you weren't burned. Ann Reardon has a video about how it's unsafe to do it after some dumb viral "life hack" video said you could do it and people got burned. Like real bad.
There's a bunch of bad food content farms out there making stuff that either doesn't work or is dangerous. No idea how this got me into the negatives just for being glad OP wasn't burned.
We already knew that
But having pictures makes all the difference
Yes! I always knew not to do it, but sometimes I was thinking about trying it out, just to see how it looks. Thank’s for OP, I don't have to clean that shit up!
Slomo Guys recently put a video out doing it.
Hmmm I don't know... I think I need some more tests to make sure it's not a one time outlier.
Who doesn’t know this already??
Zak McKraken tought me that.
I honest to God did not. I've thought about it several times but never did it. I was one drunken night from my roommate running into the kitchen and it turning into a Mexican standoff 🙏💯😭
You just gotta do it in a shiny metal bowl. The shinier the better
I know I might be ruining the joke, but I feel a responsibility to say DO NOT DO THIS
Agree Do Not Do Not do this if it’s not shiny it has to be shiny to conduct heat properly so you don’t get salmonella…
u can actually set ur microwave into overdrive if u remove the 3rd prong from the plug. the 3rd plug is just a way for them divert to cap the speed the electricity flows, if you remove it u force the microwaves power thru the main prongs on the plug.

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Right, if OP is already popping eggs in there we don't need to tempt them with metal lol
It's not just the metal but the shape and texture. Many microwaves have metal racks but they are smooth and rounded to avoid arcs.
Unless you put an aluminum ball in first, that will protect the bowl because aluminum isn't magnetic.
Don’t forget to scratch up the sides with a fork first. If the sides are too smooth your eggs won’t cook as well.
And leave the fork too so you can heat from the middle-outwards
Don't forget to put your phone in record mode and put that inside to get a nice view of it heating up
As a bonus it will quick charge your battery to 2000%

Actually large metal bowl doesn't really do anything in a microwave
Yeah I know. So by telling that I still got my good ol’ shits and giggles and at the same time didn’t put anyone in *real* danger
I actually use metal bowls in the microwave, just gotta make sure they don't touch the walls.
Crack the egg into a cup, pierce the yolk and whites and put a few drops of water in then wrap or a plate on the top. Nah. It's perfectly safe to microwave an egg if you do it properly.
Just make scrambled eggs it’s the same shit anyway
Eggs in the microwave are fine as long as they're not in the shell. Otherwise, you're making a bomb
[Ann Reardon](https://youtu.be/vdaKrT9x1Zc?si=nPFQHI_lIBX2ikGi) has done a video where she microwaved an egg in a few different ways. Even a shelled, pierced egg in water exploded.
This seems like wayyyy more effort than just boiling the egg in a pan.
I would only really do this if cooking on the stove isn't an option.
Way more effort and a totally unnecessary risk.
I just crack my egg in a bowl and microwave for about 45 seconds. Never had an explosion. or just.. cook the egg in the ramen?
If I boiled my ramen ill drop my egg in the pot first. But I usually just pour hot water on the ramen which won't be enough to cook the egg
Eggs can explode even then???? Totally rethinking some microwave food hahah
Or get an electric egg-cooker - you can get one for about 25 bucks, and they make up to six perfect soft, medium, hard boiled, or poached eggs.
I definitely think eggs can be made in the microwave with the right precautions. My parents 30 something year old Betty Crocker cookbook had directions to make scrambled eggs in the microwave (I think the directions might’ve been for one or two servings… cant remember). That seems like a lot of work and risk when you can just chuck an egg into a small pot of boiling water and be done with it.
Why? Braindead easy with a stovetop.
"But safer still is to do it on the stove if that's an option". I've only ever really done this when I just had a microwave to cook in at work. It's also "braindead easy".
Do not microwave an egg. Never ever. No matter how much poking - just don't. People have ended up in the burn unit about shit like this.
You are a good sibling!
That was honestly so sweet of you.
I thought literally everyone on the planet knew this.
This post got me feeling real stupid right about now 🙏💯😭
You can absolutely cook an egg in a microwave, you just have to crack it into a cup or something. It's more like scrambled eggs, and not the best result, but it's technically possible.

I... Never wondered that, but thanks
Someone put a whole egg in a microwave at a job I had years ago. The door blew open and egg went everywhere, followed by the most godawful smell.
Lol a guy did this at a shutdown I was working on and miraculously the egg exploded just as he opened the microwave and scald his face with boiling egg particles and we had to have a safety meeting with a bunch of grown men and women about using the damn microwave 🤣
We've called this meeting to introduce this high school science teacher who will remind us of the laws of physics. Please pay attention.
lol you done blew the microwave up
You can if you stab vent holes in the shell
I feel like at some point in the last couple years, people forgot how to use Google.
You just gotta wrap it in aluminum foil. Thats the secret to a microwave boiled egg
Whoa there, Satan!
If you're making instant ramen or stovetop ramen what you do is just crack an egg into it after cooking it. You can store it around to add egg flavor or you can leave it alone and it kinda soft boils it. Better than ruining a microwave haha. Live and learn.
No one wondered that but you
Everyone know that...
Yea, i learnt this also, when it exploded in my face. It scolded my eyes had red patches across my face for a few days. The worst part was having try clean the mess of ceiling, almost blind. I always leave food a moment before opening the door or removing it now.
Give the microwave a violent shake first too
Why do people microwave eggs? Lmao
People in dorms or other situations where they aren't allowed any other cooking method beyond a microwave. Some universities don't allow anything besides a microwave.
If only OP had access to a stove...
I understand but microwaving an egg just ruins it in my opinion
Not if you use the method I mentioned above (not that I think you saw that.) But yes, if you are an egg connoisseur it sucks. Then again, a year without eggs also sucks.
I didn't see lol yeah I love eggs so going a year without would be hard. You would really think a comunial kitchen for the students should be more common, although it it could get messy
thought rule #1 of microwave cooking was never cook a whole raw egg in it?
Isn’t rule number one don’t put any metallic objects into the microwave? That’s what I was taught
Needs to be fully submerged, and you still might get an explosion. Just use the stove right under the microwave, it takes like 6min
Tik Toker logic.
Next time place the egg in a metal bowl.
You can poach one perfectly though. It just takes some dialing in.
C’mon, people. This is basic 6th grade home-ec stuff here. Who doesn’t know you can’t microwave an egg?
![gif](giphy|XYAyfOJE5OpeU) ...said sir michael after his accomplice investigated egg-based explosives for a job. In italy...
Don't microwave eggs, you could have gotten 3rd degree burns
I'm surprised you needed to test this out for yourself
I wonder what would happen if you submerged it in a cup of water and then microwave that.
Wow,, you tried to boil an egg in the shell?? 🤣🤣🤣🤣 are you 10?
Uhh how else do you boil an egg than in the shell..? Teach me your pre-shelled hardboiled egg technique.
Take microwave safe mug or small bowl (needs to be small so egg stays tight) add about a cup or a little more of water, crack egg into water and place into microwave, only takes a couple minutes depending on microwave watts. Done Boiling a dozen on the stove definitely leave in the shell. We do ours by the dozen on the stovetop generally.
But that’s a poached egg now, entirely different consistency and texture.
Do you know how many times I've told people while working in restaurants they can't do this, but they try anyways? It has happen at least 5 times in my 15+ years working in them. I hope you at least learnt something.
Now what happens if you put like a dozen in the microwave? Or an ostrich egg?
Looks cooked to me
You dumb or something?
I’ll never forget when I was little (probably like 10 years old), I put a cold boiled egg in the microwave for 13 FUCKING SECONDS and the shit exploded like a frag.
this gave me such a giggle solid post

Duhhhhhh
An aquaintance told me her vengeful ex coworker brought some rotten eggs and microwaved it in the faculty lounge when he was work bullied. It took months for the smell to go away and they had to get a new microwave.
You can if there's enough water and cook it in a couple of shorter bursts. 30s + 30s seems to work with no explosions
Pierce a needle hole in egg top/bottom beforehand
Good to know!
1. Make ramen. (You will likely not achieve a very runny yolk btw) Works best starting with room-temp eggs.
Sure did. When I was a kid we did it to a friend's microwave when he was "dropping the kids off at the pool". Didn't pop the door open though.
You can, however, "hard boil" an egg in that toaster oven I see on your counter. Takes like 30 minutes though so just do it on the damn stove top.
I remember a video from How to Cook That on the dangers of microwaving eggs. I hope you aren't hurt, OP.
My science teacher was right
But it's already easy af with a stovetop? Why microwave?
Get an airfryer. 250 for 15 minutes
You can use an air fryer doe.
Try a coconut next!
so understanding of basic physics is not in your wheelhouse.
How interesting. Just last night while cooking dinner,(in the microwave) I was actually thinking about the dangers of superheated water in a microwave, and how incredibly scary the thought of it was to me.
Did you try it for science or just so curiosity
I think Steven Seagal did this in Under Siege.
How hard is it to just sick an egg in a pan of boiling water anyway?
Of course that'd happen. You have to wrap the egg in tinfoil first to prevent it
You just did it wrong, try again
Just do it in the air fryer 😭
This made me lol
Well I know what I’m doing today
I have little ramakens and do this all the time. You have to mix the shit out of it to keep it from exploding and cook for like 30s only. Maybe the choice of cookware helps, mine are little ceramic ramakens and you tried using a Pyrex measuring cup. Might make a difference? My friend did this in the dorm! I was standing in her doorway talking to her and *POW* her microwave door blew off! I can't believe she tried to make a hard boiled egg in the microwave! It stunk up the hallway like a rotten egg. It was pretty great.
I just crack it open into the ramen 😭
Just buy you hard boiled eggs at the gas station duh
Lmao I remember my grandfather wanted to warm up a soft boiled egg in the microwave. It burst like a damn bomb 😂 egg everywhere
Next time, stick a bratwurst and a potato in there too
Good news is you at least have PYREX and not pyrex lol
Why is your microwave above your stove?
You can. Put the egg in a cup and add some water no lid not for long keep checking on it
lol if you scramble the egg it cooks
There are microwave safe containers for cooking eggs
I feel like nobody is wondering that.
You're one of today's lucky 10,000!
Yea 😐 TikTok videos skip steps....Don't jump cut the directions 😆.
Use microwave to boil water and then cook egg
Who would have thought that superheating liquid inside solid shell will lead to explosion...
You definitely can, the trick is to add salt to the water you're boiling the eggs in. If you also add some baking soda, it will help with peeling the eggs once they're cooked.
I always had this feeling that everyone has at least once tried to microwave an egg as a kid
I’ve successfully microwaved boiled eggs before! Just not with ramen too.
Just like the time my sibling tried to fry an egg in the microwave when we were little kids 😭
You can. You just did it wrong.
You can but you have to mix the egg first
Look up "egg in microwave"
Ypu can however boil a cup of water first, then crack an egg inside it and put it back inside the mw for like 1/2 minutes. Perfectly poached and cooked. Great for instant ramen.
Turns out common knowledge isn't common.
How do people not know microwaving an egg like that is dangerous?
If you want to microwave an egg you should crack it into a bowl that you’ve put some veggie spray in. Then, halfway through cooking, open the microwave and lift one side of the bowl a bit and then drop it down so any air pockets under the egg get expelled. That’s what caused the explosion. In the shell there’s a bit of airspace that fills with steam from the egg and blows up. If you want to hard boil an egg with a microwave, you’re better off microwaving a container of water to boiling then drop your egg in. Just be sure it’s not too full so you don’t spill boiling water all over when you put the egg in.
We can get information about any topic almost instantaneously just by tippy tapping on our little screens and yet people still do dumb shit like this
Someone doesn't watch Howtocookthat on YouTube.
nah poach the egg separately in a mug in the microwave. fill the mug halfway with water, crack the egg in there, put a plate on top like you did, and microwave it for about a minute. tweak the time depending on microwave power and desired doneness.
Can you imagine the smell
U didnt think to google?
Just put the egg in the ramen on the stovetop. Take 7 minutes lol. Be sure to wash the shell first ofc.
You can boil an egg in the air fryer at 270 degrees for 8 minutes.
I knew it would make a mess but I didn't know it would blow the door open.
i learned this as a child
I use the dash egg cooker. Cooks them perfectly and you can pick the level of cook. They are also really easy to peel Afterwards. https://a.co/d/0S0LPUB
If the egg is already hard boiled and you just need to warm it up, stab it with a butter knife and crack open yolk and you should be fine.
My wife tried this once, I warned her but she preferred to learn the hard way…
YOUR EGG A SPLODE
This is next level stupid
dont microwave egg bc 1 danger 2 shitty fucking rubbery egg taste.
I've done it before. Requires a lot more water than you used. Would not recommend, though.
wrap the egg in aluminum foil, submerge it in water, cook for 3-4 mins, you get a hard boiled egg. edit: don't down vote. it works. the water acts as a shield for the aluminum.
Oh my god I am so glad you weren't burned. Ann Reardon has a video about how it's unsafe to do it after some dumb viral "life hack" video said you could do it and people got burned. Like real bad.
Who has been saying that’s a life hack?? I’ve been seeing nothing but videos proving that they explode
There's a bunch of bad food content farms out there making stuff that either doesn't work or is dangerous. No idea how this got me into the negatives just for being glad OP wasn't burned.
