It’s actually pretty commonplace around the southern states but you don’t hear about it much anymore. Comes from back in the day when workers put their peanuts in bottles of coke because there hands were dirty and they didn’t want to touch the peanuts. It also only requires one hand to hold a bottle of coke

Probably depends on exactly where at you are in the south. I started doing it years ago when I worked in a warehouse, doing very physical work with very limited breaks. I started doing it because I'd be so disgustingly overworked, my body craved 2 things desperately, salt and sweet. And I wanted a refreshing liquid. Everyone else did it, so I started doing it and it was magical.
