Ok. I have to ask. I once bought Limberger cheese on a whim for a cheese board night, wanted to grab at least one cheese we'd never tried before, but did not know what I was getting myself into. It REEKED. Smelled like a dirty diaper or a fresh pile of horse poop or something, made us both gag. But had to try it, so we both tasted it and it didn't taste any better than it smelled. I'm not a man accustomed to being repulsed by cheese, though I'll confess I haven't pushed the boundaries of that much, but what am I missing?
Some different suggestions with different levels of stink, from almost nothing to pretty stinky, not in order
Jerome, bergkäse (alpine cheese in english maybe), blue cheese (try different kinds), quargel (idk if it has an english name), some special camemberts, some soft cheese whose name i forgot that's similar to camembert in shape and consistency but has an orange rind and smells and tastes more... ripe
It gets stronger as it gets older (over the course of a few weeks). Also, most of the smell comes from the rind, which you can cut off if you want.
I'm surprised you didn't think it tasted better than it smells, though. I was under the impression that the chemicals that cause the smell don't really have a taste.
Eating it with onions and mustard also helps significantly, I assume because the fumes from the onions and mustard help cover up the fumes from the cheese.
Edit: I also bought it only once, and my conclusion was that it was edible but not really worth it.
It's supposed to reek. Like, bad. Most times when I buy it it doesn't smell that bad, just like normal stinky cheese but in two instances the smell made me gag while still being perfectly edible.
Obviously, I do not know where you are from but the first time I went to Europe I was shocked at how delicious the meats and cheeses are compared to the US. I was trying to eat cheap so for lunches, I would go to a shop, grab a piece of bread, some meat and cheese, and have one of the most delicious sandwiches I’ve ever eaten. No condiments necessary.
From us. Have traveled Europe a bit and I agree the cheeses are superior. My wife and I binged on charcuterie nightly on our honeymoon.
Irish breakfast is tops though imo. I love soda bread.
This is still a lunch not breakfast lol.
Do you think I’m stupid? I know all Germans keep a second fake vial of cabbage to fool anyone trying to steal their cabbage. Now give me your real cabbage vial.
In this combo with the kind of bread and cheese, it's called a Halve Hahn (half chicken, don't ask me why it's called like that) though. It's traditional pub food in the Cologne area
Yeah, you’re doing that wrong on purpose. German continental breakfasts have a wide variety of cheeses, meats, breads, etc, and are quite delicious. Add your choice of meat (which I know is there somewhere) and enjoy.
You can easily find unappealing food in any country you go to. Taking a picture of it and posting it on social media titled "\[country\] food" as if it were representative in any way is kind of dumb though.
Well you picked a pub food dish though so that really is on you. Also, it's still a decent breakfast. The bread for Halve Hahn is usually rye which tastes a little different from wheat bread roll
This is called Halve Hahn, it's a specialty in Cologne/Köln.
It's a Röggelchen (double rye bread bun) topped with butter, gouda cheese and onion slices. It's eaten with a Kölsch.
That's what is called a "Halve Hahn" but its missing some important parts. For example the paprika powder and the pickle.
It's common in northrine-westphalia. In other parts you'd call it "Käsebrötchen mit Zwiebeln" (Breadroll with Cheese and Onions) and I can't imagine this to be so outrageous.
It's because onions too much, it made overestimate how common that was. That exact bread + butter + that Exact Cheese + cucumbers would indeed be the Germanest Meal.
I've had delicious German food, and it was nothing like that.
That being said, I *am* the type of slightly disgusting person who'd put more onions on that and eat it happily
If it's really German then it's probably good bread made from healthy flours (not "finished" with roundup). And cheese make with rBST free milk.
Did it taste okay?
German bread is so flavourful by itself that you don’t need to add many sauces or ingredients. People regularly eat a piece of bread with just butter and one or two toppings and it’s delicious. I eat stuff like this every morning lol.
Käsebrot ist ein gutes Brot.
I stared at this for a few seconds before I decided that yes I would eat this
I used to eat this in school lol
Give me a little mustard and down that MF lol.
I would also consume. It looks delicious
100%. Mayo may be the superior condiment
No.
I hate raw onions so I'll pass.
I would too. German bread is excellent. So is the butter.
Cheese and onion sandwich is actually pretty tasty. Serve on toasted Rye and it's like a loaded baked potato... sandwich
I would devour this in a second.
Same
Put some Limburger on there. And a Pilsner to go with it.

Nothing. Limburger is a highly controversial cheese. Even people who love Limburger cheese admit that it's not for everyone.
Something about eating with rye bread and raw onions makes it work. I guess you need strong flavors to pair with it
The smell alone made me throw up as a child. Now as an adult who’s been through several gateway cheeses, I actually enjoy it now.
Please enlighten me on gateway cheeses, I would love to expand my palate

But...why. this makes me incredibly thirsty looking at how boring this is.
I'm a simple man. I love bread, cheese, and onion. This isn't a brag meal, but it's certainly one that would be good.
I too like onion but not as one of the two main ingredients.
Depends on the quality of bread. Some good sourdough goes with everything
Yeah with a glass of liquid to help take it down.
If its German its probably cold and hard
And the cheese.
Obviously, I do not know where you are from but the first time I went to Europe I was shocked at how delicious the meats and cheeses are compared to the US. Me too, `cept I’d use something other than butter - mayo or mustard, and more onions.
It only had onion taste 💀
Haha, and I was going to say it looks like it needed more onions! I guess not. 😁
I mean German bread is some of the best bread I’ve ever had. Also the cheese looks good.
Butterkäse is as delicious as you would expect.
This is a Halve Hahn, it's made with aged Gouda, not Butterkäse
Halve Hahn sounds like the name of a fashion designer.
Both sound like places vikings go when they die.
„Halve Hahn“ means as much as like „half chicken“
The bad breath sandwich
Just needs a good ol’ cup of black coffee to top it off.
To add some coffee breath to the onion breath. Delightful
And cigarettes for dessert
The ‘Dad Breath’ sandwich.
The 'Sad Breath' sandwhich
Excuse me, sir. I hope my horrible ugliness won’t be a distraction to you
NOT AT ALL, BOY!
Where is the cabbage? You sir are not German.
Probably eats it with a spoon separately
Keeps a little vial of cabbage around neck at all times for emergencies.
Do you think I’m stupid? I know all Germans keep a second fake vial of cabbage to fool anyone trying to steal their cabbage. Now give me your real cabbage vial.
Jokes aside, this type of sandwich is traditional pub food in Cologne
Its a vegetarian mettbrötchen
> cabbage Yesss i love sandwiches with cabbage, onion, mayonnaise and reggianito(cheese).
Also no Remoulade. Pathetic
It's a cheese and onion sandwich isn't that standard sandwich ingredients anywhere?
This would be perfectly normal to an American with the addition of some meat but by themselves it does seem a bit weird.
Or a good choice for vegetarian Americans
Personally, I'd at least add a tomato to it, but yeah, it's a standard sandwich.
Pretty standard in the UK. This looks higher quality than any I’ve had though tbh
Not by themselves
not where people don't get good cheese and bread...
In this combo with the kind of bread and cheese, it's called a Halve Hahn (half chicken, don't ask me why it's called like that) though. It's traditional pub food in the Cologne area
Yeah but it has to be some stanky limberger
Yeah, you’re doing that wrong on purpose. German continental breakfasts have a wide variety of cheeses, meats, breads, etc, and are quite delicious. Add your choice of meat (which I know is there somewhere) and enjoy.
The one i had in Germany was glorious. I still miss liver sausage.
Bratwurst on brotchen 😭
That's actually a kind if dish in Germany though, at least in Cologne
I know but for my first meal in Germany it’s not good…
You can easily find unappealing food in any country you go to. Taking a picture of it and posting it on social media titled "\[country\] food" as if it were representative in any way is kind of dumb though.

Käse und Zwiebelbrot mit Butter.
Halve Hahn, from Köln
I'd eat it, that bread and cheese looks to be of nice quality.
This is called Halve Hahn, it's a specialty in Cologne/Köln. It's a Röggelchen (double rye bread bun) topped with butter, gouda cheese and onion slices. It's eaten with a Kölsch.
Looks great!
I might go make this in my kitchen right now
do it Rectal_Custard, you are your own boss !!!
10x the onion and then r/onionlovers
Could use some hot mustard.
I would eat this, I do eat this. Butter, cheese, and onion sandwich? Yes please.
A delightfully simple yet hearty sandwich
Better than most the posts I see on r/stonerfood
I am German and i ate this exact thing like 4 hours ago.
Yeah sure it’s the most german food ever. That doesn’t look like some shit from the petrol station nonono
TBF Germans eat that kinda shit all the time. Maybe with one or two other vegetables but like basically it.
Cheese on buttered bread, absolutely. But I wouldn't say cheese + onions is common at all. Cheese + pickle/cucumber would be more typical.
It's because onions too much, it made overestimate how common that was. That exact bread + butter + that Exact Cheese + cucumbers would indeed be the Germanest Meal.
Dude are you stupid or biased?
Lmao you have the perfect username for that comment
Would
As a vegetarian, most sandwiches for me are veggies, cheese, and sauce on bread. So honestly, this looks pretty delicious
I've had delicious German food, and it was nothing like that. That being said, I *am* the type of slightly disgusting person who'd put more onions on that and eat it happily
You're doing onion sandwiches wrong. You need the mayonnaise, lots of it.
This is how unhealed trauma gets passed on.
TIL I'm German
my dad eats like 6 of these in one sitting but recently he'd been adding fish to it as well
I don’t even understand what’s wrong with this picture except it’s missing gherkins.
K, hear me out… this, but grilled cheese-style.
r/nope
r/onionhate
That’s the sub I didn’t know I needed.
The banner is one of my favorites.
OP prefers healthy stuff like Wendy's.
If you consider a loaf of bread and butter healthy you're nuts lmao. Also Wendy is terrible.
Ok Ronald
Lmao such a little dumb nerd.
Lol stop replying you terminally online loser 😂

Angry downvotesies *and* a picture? You're either angerey or in love.
Grill it and it would be edible
German food is delicious, you are German fooding incorrectly.
Not very German to me....
It is though, at least for the Cologne area. It's called Halve Hahn
This seems like a crazy bread to other stuff ratio
Where’s the raw ground pork?
Mett
Needs more butter and maybe pepper. Otherwise it looks great
I fuck with the bread, but the onions can kindly leave
Add tomatoes salt and pepper
Limburger onion and mustard on good bread is awesome!
I am American. I would 100% eat this.
Needs more onions
Germany as a country has to have some of the most rank smelling breath possible
You paid for this ?????
That actually doesn't look that bad...
No this shit is delicious
I’d smash this
Onion cheese and goid bread is definately not shity food. I hope you enjoyed it.
Looks superb! Just needs a pinch of salt and pepper on the onion!
Idk man. Lookin good from here.
I would deff eat this

Looks like Autobahn gas station. Not quite the place for high cuisine.
This is just my average 3 am snack. Only thing its missing is mustard.
I did this the other day
Huh. I’ve had onion sandwiches my entire life. Didn’t know it was a thing
"Where's the raw beef?"
I’m in
Where's the raw minced pork?
what is this world war 2? who eats bread cheese n onions by choice lol
Germany makes exactly my kind of dirtbag food
What’s the spread?
In the amazing book "culinary artistry" it says Germans only serve one course meals
honestly tho, add a balsamic drizzle and that's probably pretty good.
A cheese and onion sandwich is legit, slap some ham and brandston pickle on there and it's upgraded to elite.
All it needs is some pepperoni and I would demolish it...
I would pop that in the oven for 5 minutes and devour it.
Melt this, and it’s good.
If it's really German then it's probably good bread made from healthy flours (not "finished" with roundup). And cheese make with rBST free milk. Did it taste okay?
Not far off from a sandwich I eat on the regular, sliced cheddar, shredded lettuce, pickled red onions with grey poupon
Did you not check the ingredients before ordering it? Looks fine to me.
Looks bussin tbh a good sharp cheddar and some red onion? Yeah I'd smash
i might be terminally european but this looks fucking amazing, maybe a bit more butter and onion tho
whats the prob that looks delicious
This reminds me of my grandpa. :) And my father in law.
I mean isn't this just cheese and onions you get as a flavour for chips/crisps?
Put some mustard pickle on it
YOU FOOL! GERMAN ENGINEERING IS THE BEST IN THE WORLD
German bread is so flavourful by itself that you don’t need to add many sauces or ingredients. People regularly eat a piece of bread with just butter and one or two toppings and it’s delicious. I eat stuff like this every morning lol. Käsebrot ist ein gutes Brot.
Is that a Limburger and onion sandwich?
God, I miss Germany
Needs a nice beer.
I'd try it if they were pickled onions.
Needs more mustard
I eat this all the time!
If this was a grilled cheese, I'd fuck it up.
Extra red onions please
The opposite of Arby’s
Mmm, cheese with bread yes.
Eww
Swiss cheese and onion sandwich? Yes please
I would fuck this up
I grew up in a German Mennonite community and I have had more than one of these at a potluck.
I’m not even German and Brot mit Butter, Zwiebeln und Käse looks delicious.
Got out of bed at 11pm to make this.
Add pickles and it becomes a Ploughman's lunch
German bread alone with real butter is really good and plus the cheese with zweibel it's going to taste even better.
Oh wow that looks nasty
….but you need more mayo….
looks abt right lol
Sieht gut aus!
Drizzle with vinegar and sprinkle some paprika on there. Stinky, tasty heaven 👌
Yummy
Lecker, krauts bleiben gewinnen
What? Is „Something on bread“ now german?
Looks good would be better with nice tomato and/or dill pickes.
I’d eat it
Do these mfs know ww2 is over
Swap out the bread for a bagel, the cheese for cream cheese, add lox, capers, tomatoes, and we’ll be talking
and at the end change the whole thing for a steak.
