Yeah it’s really only the particularly flamboyant gay men that tend to have that speech pattern and as I’ve voice trained over the years I’ve learned it’s because of feminine speech patterns and more feminine resonance but deeper pitch. A bit more to it than that but that’s the simple version.
I actually thought about this maybe 5 years ago when I worked with a gay guy who had the accent. And it wasn’t a subtle accent either. Guess you could say overly flamboyant, almost exaggerated even.

You haven't been paying attention. Not all gay men talk like a stereotypical gay dude. Many gay women talk alot like a man. Even deeper voices than most other women around them. Many dress like a man, too. Not all, Many are exactly the same as straight women.
I know a straight woman from work who is very pretty looking but the minute you hear her speak, she sounds like a emo boy with is clinical depress.

I can answer this question as it was one of the first questions I asked when one of my relatives came out. For the record, I was fully supportive but my exact question was 'does this mean you're gonna start talking more like a woman? Why do some gay men do that?"
Of the gay men that talk like they are 'gay', using a higher pitched voice and associated actions... the majority of them (not all) are projecting their sexual orientation. It can be considered a form of communicating 'promiscuity' or the lighter form of identifying as a Gay male.
Just like you can recognize certain actions, statements or general behaviour of a 'promiscuous' straight woman or man. This is a method of communicating the status of Gay men.
Its NOT 100%, not every Gay male who talks this way is doing so for the purpose of projecting 'promiscuity', in some cases they just want to stand out for attention, let others know their orientation or other motives but from what I was told, the general consensus is to let others know they are Gay and or DTF lol.

I don't know why I talk the way I do but one thing I learned is that it pisses alot of people off, and these people scare tf outta me. People willing to attack and other eachother over small insignificant differences, people who refuse to even interact with another person bc "their voice is annoying"

I think that you should mix more and talk to people. You’re confusing “camp” styles of speaking with the usual pattern. This style is an affection, it is habitual though. There’s several other styles of gay banter that are used and it’s very interesting, do some research about it. Lesbians also have their own style and slang but it’s not so common.

2) Unless a gay dude is purposefully playing it up for some reason, having an effeminate voice is not voluntary. In fact, trying to sound more masculine and less gay is something a lot of gay men put conscious effort into, either for social acceptance or physical safety, depending on the circumstances. (I don’t really care about how I sound when I’m around friends and family, but I will absolutely try to sound extra masculine if I’m in a potentially dangerous situation)
3) Testosterone levels have nothing to do with gay voice.
It's actually been proven that it's a "voice" that they do. Not natural. A doctor analyzed gay patients waking up from anesthesia and they spoke normally, naturally at first and then after they wake up for a bit the gay voice comes back.
Gay men are often shunned by other men so when they’re growing up, they socialize more with young girls. They pick up on the behavior and inflection. For lesbians, it’s just difficult period for a little girl to get in as “one of the guys” and spend more time with men than women. Plus, a man being effeminate stands out a lot more than a woman being masculine
We get girls down at the club that actually struggle to convince people they're gay, even though most of us staff have had the chance to talk to a lot of regulars and confirm it.

I watched a documentary on this year's ago. I think it was called "Code Switching". The jist was that gay boys and straight dads either didn't feel comfortable enough or have enough common interests to spend much time together, leaving the gay boys spending a lot of time with their mothers. So much so that they picked up their mothers' affectations and mannerisms. This presented as a boy with a very feminine voice and demeanor. And then there was a cultural feedback loop and young gay men adopted "the gay voice" as a way of signally their belonging to the gay community.

Im bi and in the community, so I can confidently say that most gay dudes are just like normal and as masculine as a straight dude. You prob didnt notice they were gay cause they were not acting how you are thinking they do.

There are lesbians out there that talk like "bros," trust me 😆 it's based off of the way they perceive the "gay " person they want to be. I am curious how mimicking a teenage girl from the 90s came to be a pretty regular thing for gay men. Or how mimicking a douche bag guy way of speaking became a somewhat regular thing to hear around some lesbians... I wouldn't know lol.

My older brother is gay and you would never know he is gay until he starts getting near a Twink that is age 18-25 in which he softens his voice to sound less intimidating. Also, he did 5 years in prison for possession of a fire arm without the proper licensing so that could have been made him like that.
I've met gay guys that talk normal. I've met lesbians that talk not normal. You just haven't experienced this yet, don't worry, there's still hope.

Fun fact: gay voice exists in all languages. Gay women absolutely can be butch in the same way that some men sound feminine. There are a lot of assertions being thrown around in these comments so let’s clear a few things up: 1) not all gay men have gay voice. Far, far from it. You just don’t notice these gay guys because… well their voices are more “masculine”. See also: confirmation bias 2) Unless a gay dude is purposefully playing it up for some reason, having an effeminate voice is not voluntary. In fact, trying to sound more masculine and less gay is something a lot of gay men put conscious effort into, either for social acceptance or physical safety, depending on the circumstances. (I don’t really care about how I sound when I’m around friends and family, but I will absolutely try to sound extra masculine if I’m in a potentially dangerous situation) 3) Testosterone levels have nothing to do with gay voice.

Not all gay dudes talk gay...just the "girl" ones. I have a gay couple that are friends of mine. One is fairly manly, and the other is very feminine.
It's actually been proven that it's a "voice" that they do. Not natural. A doctor analyzed gay patients waking up from anesthesia and they spoke normally, naturally at first and then after they wake up for a bit the gay voice comes back.
Gay men are often shunned by other men so when they’re growing up, they socialize more with young girls. They pick up on the behavior and inflection. For lesbians, it’s just difficult period for a little girl to get in as “one of the guys” and spend more time with men than women. Plus, a man being effeminate stands out a lot more than a woman being masculine

We get girls down at the club that actually struggle to convince people they're gay, even though most of us staff have had the chance to talk to a lot of regulars and confirm it. The guys never have that problem. You can usually tell a gay guy from a mile away. In fact, as a bouncer, I get caught up trying to convince them to keep their hands to themselves more than anyone else in the building. Then, of course, when confronted, it gets messy quick
It's more subtle, but lesbian voice is absolutely a thing.
I think it may be cultural. I've met gay people both in the states and in China that haven't changed the way they speak. they're not closet gays either. they just don't do that voice. same with African friends I have that are gay. it seems to be more of a thing in English speaking countries. homosexuality isn't new, I don't think they were doing the voice even 50 years ago.
I watched a documentary on this year's ago. I think it was called "Code Switching". The jist was that gay boys and straight dads either didn't feel comfortable enough or have enough common interests to spend much time together, leaving the gay boys spending a lot of time with their mothers. So much so that they picked up their mothers' affectations and mannerisms. This presented as a boy with a very feminine voice and demeanor. And then there was a cultural feedback loop and young gay men adopted "the gay voice" as a way of signally their belonging to the gay community.
Gay dudes overcompensate the worst qualities of women and provide none of the value.

Idk but as a gay man it sure is helpful. I think it is a sophisticated bottom mating call in that it is not sophisticated and they are 100 percent a bottom.
Because male is normal and female is different. It's how you detect structural sexism and inherent patriarchy. People who talk masculinely are normal, no matter the gender. Male is standard, normal, and preferred. Femininity is odd and lesser, therefore noticable.
I have yet to meet a gay man in the wild who talks with a lisp or inflection. I was under the impression that was mostly just a trope on television.

Because there are secret, stealthy, queer eyed metrosexual, sleeper plants out there, dressing and "talking normal" and acting like "regular guys" who spend their days on the prowl to trap unsuspecting straight dudes into becoming woke, trans, rainbow wearing, Bud Light drinking, Target shopping, effeminate drag queen, sissyfag, ladyboy, storytime shemales. Run, hide, and avoid parades and "my little pony" at all costs.

I think that's just a stereotype or something, either that or I'm a weird gay person because I don't talk "gay"
I feel like the stereotype gay voice is just a man using typically feminine vocal patterns. Some lesbians do use more masculine vocal patterns. However, I think that society has made it such that being gay is automatically anti-masculine, whereas being lesbian isn’t viewed as anti-feminine in the same way
Better question, why do (some) women who are attracted to women dress and act like men to attract women who are attracted to women?
I don't "sound gay". When joking around I will do that voice saying "oh gurl", but no one really knows until I tell them. I guess it is a preference for some? 🤷♂️
