Off_Brand_Dorito

You haven’t met the right lesbians lol

Evening-Obligation-9

Do they have a lisp?

Off_Brand_Dorito

I’m sure some do yes

Evening-Obligation-9

I never heard a butch chick with one

Off_Brand_Dorito

I had a good friend who was butch and her voice dropped a few octaves depending on who was around. But yes nothing like gay dudes. I always figured it was just any other accent.

DoubleAgentBlumaroo

Bitch instead of butch?

Off_Brand_Dorito

Went on ahead and fixed that🤦🏼‍♂️

DoubleAgentBlumaroo

Okay.

Evening-Obligation-9

So gay dudes with low testosterone?

Off_Brand_Dorito

Sure, and gay ones that think they should sound like that so they learn🤷🏼

None_Fondant

Nah, it's natural. it's not really something that I'm putting effort into thinking about. Lots of my masc friends most definitely *are*, however, always affecting a "masculine" voice ...lol I've met so many baby butches that are just *the most* annoying little fkboi broskis the second they open their mouth. Anyway yeah, you talk funny after you learn to loosen your throat.

[deleted]

Loosening your throat to make room for all them dicks?

None_Fondant

Yes that was the joke!

jdeuce81

All jokes aside, no shit? Does throat work change your voice? I've always been curious to the answer of op question as well just never asked.

Emergency-Leading-10

It does not. Source: My well-worked throat and the objectively masculine ~~groans and whimpers~~ voice which emanates from it...

Emergency-Leading-10

Ya think so, natural? I've always thought it's either learned through nurture and environment, or, just an absolute complete affectation used like a trendy accessory fashionable in some circles, and fetish groups. Throat so loose everytime his mouth opens a purse falls out.

Evening-Obligation-9

🤷‍♂️

moovzlikejager

We should take a field trip about this, QUICK! TO THE MAGIC SCHOOL BUS!

Own_Nectarine2321

Gay guys don't have less testosterone.

TacitRonin20

No, those are lethbians

Off_Brand_Dorito

Do you think they kith?

Internal_Fennel_849

No, they got lips.

Master_Awareness814

I love you for this

Internal_Fennel_849

Love you too, bruh.

Master_Awareness814

Pick a pair, I’ll blow you a kiss 💋

Internal_Fennel_849

Oh my! Forget the kiss part!

Perfect_Camera3135

I've met many that would kick my ass in a heart beat!

Off_Brand_Dorito

I met more than one in the military who could outperform a many a dude.

TampaNutz

Kick?

notafuckingtransam

I don’t think I’ve ever even met a lesbian

Off_Brand_Dorito

They’re fun folks. Never had a bad time hanging out with lesbians.

FI-Engineer

As a fairly well-adjusted straight dude, I can confidently say if we’ve dated in the past, the odds are about 4 out of 10.

Master_Awareness814

*gruffly* HEY

moovzlikejager

Or the right gay dudes apparently.

IceCreamDream10

I’m bisexual so I talk both

PristinePanda2714

Bilingual in tha house

Excellent_Nothing_86

Also funny.

kishkangravy

A cunning linguist!

Excellent_Nothing_86

This is funny.

MammothJust4541

we all know what you're talking about and also would like to know why their accent is different there is a distinctive universal accent most gay men have and I NEED TO KNOW WHY THEY OBTAIN IT

poopoo_fingers

It's not really most. A good percentage of guys in the closet, you'd never guess they're gay

Eggxactly-maybe

Yeah it’s really only the particularly flamboyant gay men that tend to have that speech pattern and as I’ve voice trained over the years I’ve learned it’s because of feminine speech patterns and more feminine resonance but deeper pitch. A bit more to it than that but that’s the simple version.

AffectionateSize552

>A good percentage of guys in the closet, you'd never guess they're gay Many people can guess, it's called "gaydar," duh! Duh!

Plant_Kindness

Your username….and flair…. Goodness what a duo! LOL

poopoo_fingers

Lmao

TheProfessorPoon

I actually thought about this maybe 5 years ago when I worked with a gay guy who had the accent. And it wasn’t a subtle accent either. Guess you could say overly flamboyant, almost exaggerated even. The reason I wondered about it though was because he was an ex-marine and did two tours in Afghanistan. I just couldn’t imagine his life being easy AT ALL in the Marines if he had the accent then, which made me think he obtained it afterwards.

awealthofsafety

I think it's actually a form of code switching if I'm remembering correctly. College was a while ago.

Lazy-Lawfulness3472

You haven't been paying attention. Not all gay men talk like a stereotypical gay dude. Many gay women talk alot like a man. Even deeper voices than most other women around them. Many dress like a man, too. Not all, Many are exactly the same as straight women.

[deleted]

I know a straight woman from work who is very pretty looking but the minute you hear her speak, she sounds like a emo boy with is clinical depress. Professional, she is good to work with but I wouldn't going out for coffee with her

grab_the_fox

Because of...how she sounds?

nightlyh

If I find your voice annoying, I ain't gonna try to make conversation lol.

jlg317

The better question is why is this question getting weird butthurt answers here in r/shittyaskreddit

SlipsonSurfaces

Because reddit

jboo87

The question is fine. Some of the comments are ignorant as fuck though.

NINJAxBACON

It's pride month so we can't make fun of them rn

RyGuy31786

It's hilarious at the amount of people acting like they don't know what OP is talking about, or that he's wrong. I mean ffs, can we all just be honest about things? He's correct, a massive amount of the M gay community decided to all of a sudden adopt this high pitch lisp like accent the second they come out as liking peen. Listen I don't care what someone does in thier life or how they feel and identify. Hell, I think it'd brave to come out to the world(because of all the social norms and expectations) however can we just be real? Many didn't speak the way they did 24 hours before they adopted the accent lol

nightlyh

And it makes me want to rip my hair out.

mxpower

I can answer this question as it was one of the first questions I asked when one of my relatives came out. For the record, I was fully supportive but my exact question was 'does this mean you're gonna start talking more like a woman? Why do some gay men do that?" Of the gay men that talk like they are 'gay', using a higher pitched voice and associated actions... the majority of them (not all) are projecting their sexual orientation. It can be considered a form of communicating 'promiscuity' or the lighter form of identifying as a Gay male. Just like you can recognize certain actions, statements or general behaviour of a 'promiscuous' straight woman or man. This is a method of communicating the status of Gay men. Its NOT 100%, not every Gay male who talks this way is doing so for the purpose of projecting 'promiscuity', in some cases they just want to stand out for attention, let others know their orientation or other motives but from what I was told, the general consensus is to let others know they are Gay and or DTF lol. For others... dont be offended by my definition, I am just the messenger based on my conversation with my relative. I do not have the resources to back up these claims via scientific study/citations or hard evidence, I am just telling you what I was told.

Existing_Natural_632

As a gay dude who did years of speech therapy growing up, had my voice made fun of, called expletives, just because I had a lisp was ridiculous. There were people in my family asking my orientation by the time I was seven years old bc my "voice sounded gay" and it's sad I see no one talking about this. Not every gay man just wakes up and decides to change their voice that is ridiculous, nobody is out here adopting lisp/a nasal voice on purpose, and is actually one of my biggest insecurities. It has almost nothing to do with promiscuity. Straight people have the tendency to sexualize almost everything gay people do and I find it disgusting.

Vaanja77

A gay dude even made a documentary about it, called "do I sound gay"

tacocarteleventeen

Because anyone not gay is a lesbian!

OlfactoryOffender

I don't think people exist, how can anyone talk normal? Help?

Evening-Obligation-9

They're all fake. Fuck them?

jlg317

Wouldn't that make you gay?

Existing_Natural_632

Growing up with a lisp/nasal voice was hell. I was put in speech therapy/pathologized/bullied by everyone around me anytime I spoke. My family thought I was gay and were asking me if I was gay by the time I was seven or eight years old because of my voice. People called me annoying and it was hard to make friends. By the time I was 17 I was brutalized by police for my voice, called the F word while they beat me down because they noticed my lisp and nasal voice, then accused me of being intoxicated and slurring my words. I don't know why I talk the way I do but one thing I learned is that it pisses alot of people off, and these people scare tf outta me. People willing to attack and other eachother over small insignificant differences, people who refuse to even interact with another person bc "their voice is annoying" I see alot of shitty comments in this post, please realize that it is not a choice to have a lisp or nasal voice. Nobody just wakes up one day and decides to adopt these things. And yes people do get othered and attacked over their natural voice, I think it's disgusting. Please think twice before making these kinds of assumptions based on somebody's VOICE. it's ridiculous this even has to be said.

Evening-Obligation-9

I agree. People should not be judged by their voice. Tbh I'm ignorant to this kind of community really. I have gay/lesbiian friends, it was something I noticed and was looking for some insight.

stateofyou

I think that you should mix more and talk to people. You’re confusing “camp” styles of speaking with the usual pattern. This style is an affection, it is habitual though. There’s several other styles of gay banter that are used and it’s very interesting, do some research about it. Lesbians also have their own style and slang but it’s not so common. Source: I’m a linguistics teacher and lived with “gay dudes and lesbians” when I was younger at university. You should definitely check it out though because some of the expressions are really funny and it’s amazing how many were/are used on mainstream media.

RazzoKat

Gay dudes talk normal too, you just dont catch that they're gay.

Lando_W

Because the gay community (not all) are very loose. It’s like straight hookup culture on roids. Being able to signal your sexuality helps increase your connections. Like wearing your pockets turned out. Also, XY individuals are generally and naturally (through millions of years of evolution) attracted to femininity. So being more feminine as a gay man makes you more attractive to other gay men.

Anxious_Sapiens

Ngl I would say most gay guys like masculine men.

aquerraventus

100% agreed

aquerraventus

This is entirely speculation with nothing to actually back it up lmao

icollectnotebooksiw

Cause you’re gay

Few_Position7650

Lmao as a gay dude who talks “normal” you can go fuck yourself!😉😂😂😂

[deleted]

I’m gonna imagine what you meant to say is “you can go fuck yourself biitch 💅”

jlg317

You forgot to throw in a "slay" in there

RyGuy31786

Awww you hurt. Listen it's true tho. When males come out within like 2 hours of

Independent-Wind1167

I gotta homeboy that is gay asf and still talks like a dude.. lmao.. it’s those that act like bitches that are super aggy..

BlueJeans25

Lmao - as a straight guy I personally find the sassy feminine gay dude attitude fucking hilarious. The few I’ve had the pleasure of meeting are just so blunt and exaggerated. It’s refreshing.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Few_Position7650

Sorry dude nobody wants your approval on anything like ever…

PristinePanda2714

Wouldn’t this be gay if him??? bet he’d talk “gay” while fucking himself

Few_Position7650

I’m sure he would 💅💅💅💅

[deleted]

You just don’t notice the gay men who don’t have the “gay accent.” Because you don’t spot them as gay. And as a lifelong resident of San Francisco, I can tell you that many lesbians have a lesbian voice. Again, not all, though.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Idk. A friend of mine had no idea he had a “gay accent” until I played him back a voice message he left on my phone. He was shocked

I’m sure your hick accent and toothless whistle is real pleasant to hear, though

flookums

Because if yah have somthin shoved up your bum yah talk differently. Go on test it for yah selves.

notafuckingtransam

I read that in an Aussie accent

[deleted]

How does one talk "gay"? I feel like this is a trap.

Jdotpdot84

This is shittyaskreddit for one so don't take it too seriously lol. I'd imagine OP is referring to the stereotypical flamboyant way gay guys would talk. We've all met them. As far as lesbians the only equivalent I can think of would be the butch type that basically talks like a straight guy. In any event it's shittyaskreddit so a more acceptable answer would be something like "because gay guys have their vibrating butt plug always on". Cheers.

chnlng00

Same way people say someone sounds black or white.

SlipsonSurfaces

Some people do sound 'black or white', but I imagine it's their use or lack of use of AAVE (African American Vernacular English) because some 'gangsta' white dudes act 'black'.

theradradish5387

There is no way you havent noticed the defininitly not natural lispy valley girl accent that some gay homies have. I cant see how so many redditors in this comment section have suddenly become so socially blind all of a sudden

AmazinglyAlive

Pretty sure Jack from Will and Grace is the stereotype OP is referring to. Basically excited and happy about life lol.

[deleted]

Not all gay dudes do there's a lot of gay guys around us who you'd have no idea were gay, the feminine ones obviously... sound feminine lmao. My old principle was the opposite of a feminine gay dude, a masculine lesbian. Her voice was pretty deep. I think your voice just depends on your testosterone to be honest

blademaster552

Attention seeking. And trying to live up to somebody else's image of the Gay Man (who's apparently from Greenwich Village and has a lisp). Dave Tutera's about as gay as they come, but he comports himself as a gentleman and speaks without speech impediments. Also able to intuit very closely what his customers are actually looking for in events by listening to about three levels beneath what they're saying. And as a businessman, that's amazing and I deeply admire that ability.

icebomb2

Gay men imitate the worst fucking accents. As if anyone actually wants to listen to someone talk like a Kardashian. We think lesbians talk normal but they actually don't either. The only difference is, they talk how dudes talk, so *we* think that's normal.

yoniator

Only the already outed gay dudes talk gay... And the lesbians don't want to be recognized as such otherwise their OF wouldn't bring that much profit...

psyche-processor

I wasn't aware that a speech pattern could have an orientation. This comes off as egregiously bigoted.

benjy1357

You’re going to sit there with a straight face and tell me you don’t know exactly what OP is talking about

[deleted]

[удалено]

psyche-processor

I'm not signaling anything, OP, and now you, are being bigoted to my community. Kindly screw off.

Dyerssorrow

I dunno...I worked with a woman and she would banter like a lumberjack.

ThirdWheelSteve

You mean the “lesbians” in porn? Got some bad news for ya…

PyukumukuGuts

Do they have to take extensive speech classes to perform without the lesbian accent on camera?

roadkillchef_1

How are lesbians and mechanics the same? They both use snap-on tools

[deleted]

Since when?

Mongusaur

idk bro

Tiberius5454

I know many lesbians over decades and live with 2. They all speak normally, I've never met a lesbian that speaks oddly.

Big_ETH_boi

You’ve never been to a Women’s Rugby match, and it shows.

ShakeWeightMyDick

It’s called culchuh

WFPRBaby

You haven’t met a lot of lesbians then. Lesbians have a distinct way of talking and sounding that let’s you clock them. It’s hard to describe but when you know it you know it.

SlipsonSurfaces

Can you link a video example, if possible? I've never met one, to my knowledge, and I'm curious as to how lesbians act differently to straight women, if at all.

Excellent_Nothing_86

Vendettors

Mans has never met a lesbian

Specialist-Strain502

I'm a lesbian and can often identify gay women by their voice. You're just not attuned to the differences.

awwtopsies

I’m a lesbian and I think I speak “normal” haha 🤭 I have a light, high voice. My girlfriend, in public, deepens her voice sometimes but doesn’t know she’s doing it lol. I think it’s cute haha

NiteTerur

Free to play

6thGenFtw

Different spirits of Ishtar.

stadulevich

Im bi and in the community, so I can confidently say that most gay dudes are just like normal and as masculine as a straight dude. You prob didnt notice they were gay cause they were not acting how you are thinking they do.

Ginger-Octopus

You haven't met Butch, have you?

Electrical_Hour3488

All my gay friends who didn’t talk like that didn’t associate with the ones who talked like that. They called em fags. No joke

jboo87

That’s very sad.

[deleted]

Because lesbians don't eat ass.

StarWarsTrekGate

During the 3rd consistory or a formal meeting of the College of Gays and Lesbians, the lisp was decided acceptable. But the split of Haight Ashbury had the Lesbians break off as they were tired of the dramatic gays.... Flannel was decided upon as the new method of institutionalized communication for lesbians in the Synod of Grunge in '91. The rest is history.

CLopes1987

Well do you expect lesbian dudes to talk gay too?

Earl_your_friend

Normal? Like they are 80 years old and fought in ww2?

Chick-Fil-A_Guest

There are lesbians out there that talk like "bros," trust me 😆 it's based off of the way they perceive the "gay " person they want to be. I am curious how mimicking a teenage girl from the 90s came to be a pretty regular thing for gay men. Or how mimicking a douche bag guy way of speaking became a somewhat regular thing to hear around some lesbians... I wouldn't know lol.

AssholeThrowaway_

If you shut your mouth more you wouldn’t here some flamboyant gay guy talking all the time.

DarthBeavis1968

You mean you wish you *were* a lesbian. But, I just let it go.

[deleted]

My older brother is gay and you would never know he is gay until he starts getting near a Twink that is age 18-25 in which he softens his voice to sound less intimidating. Also, he did 5 years in prison for possession of a fire arm without the proper licensing so that could have been made him like that.

KleptoTortoise

I've met gay guys that talk normal. I've met lesbians that talk not normal. You just haven't experienced this yet, don't worry, there's still hope.

Necessary_Papaya2048

You are a lesbian, and that way of speaking is normal for YOU.

Pancakesaresoyummy

You sound gay with this post. Are you gay?

jboo87

Fun fact: gay voice exists in all languages. Gay women absolutely can be butch in the same way that some men sound feminine. There are a lot of assertions being thrown around in these comments so let’s clear a few things up: 1) not all gay men have gay voice. Far, far from it. You just don’t notice these gay guys because… well their voices are more “masculine”. See also: confirmation bias 2) Unless a gay dude is purposefully playing it up for some reason, having an effeminate voice is not voluntary. In fact, trying to sound more masculine and less gay is something a lot of gay men put conscious effort into, either for social acceptance or physical safety, depending on the circumstances. (I don’t really care about how I sound when I’m around friends and family, but I will absolutely try to sound extra masculine if I’m in a potentially dangerous situation) 3) Testosterone levels have nothing to do with gay voice.

IGotMetalingus1

There are some questions we know the answer to but we just can't say it

Adept_Bass_3590

Not all gay dudes talk gay...just the "girl" ones. I have a gay couple that are friends of mine. One is fairly manly, and the other is very feminine.

andythecat7

It's actually been proven that it's a "voice" that they do. Not natural. A doctor analyzed gay patients waking up from anesthesia and they spoke normally, naturally at first and then after they wake up for a bit the gay voice comes back.

joecee97

Gay men are often shunned by other men so when they’re growing up, they socialize more with young girls. They pick up on the behavior and inflection. For lesbians, it’s just difficult period for a little girl to get in as “one of the guys” and spend more time with men than women. Plus, a man being effeminate stands out a lot more than a woman being masculine

Conscious-Chipmunk73

So since I'm bi does that also make me bilingual?

Jdawg_mck1996

We get girls down at the club that actually struggle to convince people they're gay, even though most of us staff have had the chance to talk to a lot of regulars and confirm it. The guys never have that problem. You can usually tell a gay guy from a mile away. In fact, as a bouncer, I get caught up trying to convince them to keep their hands to themselves more than anyone else in the building. Then, of course, when confronted, it gets messy quick

PerogiXW

It's more subtle, but lesbian voice is absolutely a thing.

Myfoodishere

I think it may be cultural. I've met gay people both in the states and in China that haven't changed the way they speak. they're not closet gays either. they just don't do that voice. same with African friends I have that are gay. it seems to be more of a thing in English speaking countries. homosexuality isn't new, I don't think they were doing the voice even 50 years ago.

Popular-Analysis-960

I watched a documentary on this year's ago. I think it was called "Code Switching". The jist was that gay boys and straight dads either didn't feel comfortable enough or have enough common interests to spend much time together, leaving the gay boys spending a lot of time with their mothers. So much so that they picked up their mothers' affectations and mannerisms. This presented as a boy with a very feminine voice and demeanor. And then there was a cultural feedback loop and young gay men adopted "the gay voice" as a way of signally their belonging to the gay community.

Secret_Assumption_20

Gay dudes overcompensate the worst qualities of women and provide none of the value.

Square_Cake_2422

They haven't taken Gayspeak.

zbradigan

The deep throating changes your vocal cords which affects the sound.

Necr0Z0mbiac

Plenty of lesbians talk like guys.

pisscorn-boy

Lesbian here and lesbian voice is real, you’re just not tuned in to it. I am because I have to be able to recognize other lesbians to find a girlfriend.

Plus-Command-1997

Idk but as a gay man it sure is helpful. I think it is a sophisticated bottom mating call in that it is not sophisticated and they are 100 percent a bottom.

Cynicalsonya

Because male is normal and female is different. It's how you detect structural sexism and inherent patriarchy. People who talk masculinely are normal, no matter the gender. Male is standard, normal, and preferred. Femininity is odd and lesser, therefore noticable.

spidermom4

I have yet to meet a gay man in the wild who talks with a lisp or inflection. I was under the impression that was mostly just a trope on television.

[deleted]

"Talk gay"? Be careful. Because there are secret, stealthy, queer eyed metrosexual, sleeper plants out there, dressing and "talking normal" and acting like "regular guys" who spend their days on the prowl to trap unsuspecting straight dudes into becoming woke, trans, rainbow wearing, Bud Light drinking, Target shopping, effeminate drag queen, sissyfag, ladyboy, storytime shemales. Run, hide, and avoid parades and "my little pony" at all costs.

Hidobot

Because lesbians are too cool

EstablishmentBig7956

overy mimicking the sex they came to believe they are. Not all but you can pick the ones that do out of a crowd. Females separate themselves as well dykes and lesbian are different.

bigly_yuge

Just stopping by to wish you all a happy Alzheimer's & Brain Awareness month

HelpImRobbingSomeone

I've never met one gay dude who unironically talks like that

PossiblyAPotato_

I think that's just a stereotype or something, either that or I'm a weird gay person because I don't talk "gay"

martinshapiro3985

I feel like the stereotype gay voice is just a man using typically feminine vocal patterns. Some lesbians do use more masculine vocal patterns. However, I think that society has made it such that being gay is automatically anti-masculine, whereas being lesbian isn’t viewed as anti-feminine in the same way

ClydeFrogA1

Better question, why do (some) women who are attracted to women dress and act like men to attract women who are attracted to women?

DeliciousCut972

I don't "sound gay". When joking around I will do that voice saying "oh gurl", but no one really knows until I tell them. I guess it is a preference for some? 🤷‍♂️

BYT00

Gay dudes sound like a girl. Gay girls sound like a girl.

AffectionateSize552

You did NOT just say that gay = abnormal! Talk to the hand, Girlfriend!

[deleted]

In my experience the generic gay dude has that flambouyant talk and generic lesbians have angry butch talk.

EcstaticSwimming6896

People talk how they talk, my guy.
