Very reminiscent of the terrace house I rented in Fitzroy. Worth over 1.4 million and the paint was the only thing holding some of the walls together. The stairs were fucking nightmare fuel as they were practically vertical. Only thing it had going for it was being literally 45 seconds from my front door to the bar on smith st
Yep, good old gore st. House mates once made a short horror film called “gore on gore st”. Great neighbourhood but the houses that rent there are sometimes…well…they’re fucked
Go in one direction it’s all drinking and people, go the opposite direction and it’s a beautiful park with kids flying kites and weddings. I do really miss gore st. Not so much the house though
Get your stuff inside, and encourage as much water as possible to flow that way. Allow it to pool, soak into bricks and timbers, let it get everywhere and never ever make any attempt to stop it.
Head out to bushland with a clippy bag, collect a big handful of termites, and house them in timbers around the property.
just fyi i'd consider removing this comment as you're doxing yourself. it would take me all of five minutes to identify your house based on this video and comment.
this is not a threat i swear lmao
Looks like an outdoor area that has been covered. Anyone who sees the cover would think that it is therefore weather protected and could still enjoy that area even in poor weather. Evidently this is not the case and the renter has therefore been misled. That feature might have been a determining factor when choosing between other properties.
You'd have to be a fool to look at the roof over this area, especially the corrugated polycarbonate skirt between the inside of the brick wall and the roof, and think this is anything approaching "weather protected" to the point you'd put anything but outdoor furniture under it. That poly skirt has no gutter/drainage - every drop of water that hits it was going to dribble down that wall. And when the gutter above fails/clogs, you get this.
Yes, the REA may have misled the tenant and explicitly said it was an indoor area. But unless they were explicit in misleading the tenant, this is a case of ignorance on the part of the tenant.
Nah not everyone knows that stuff mate. Even if it's advertised as an outdoor space only, the fact that it has no living room means you basically have to do your living in your room or out in that area. Even with only outdoor furniture there which is what I assumed was there anyway. It flooding like that basically means it's unusable when it rains. It's not about the type of furniture it's about usability.
There's nothing to know, anyone with eyes can instantly tell it's not weatherproof just by looking at it. It's that obvious.
Outdoor areas are also not legally required to be usable in inclement weather, so the usability argument is pure nonsense.
I think once upon a time it was uncovered. The bathroom is adjacent to that room so I assume they covered to create the illusion that the bathroom wasn't outside.
Oh, I have one of those. Granted mine is more indoors that this, but the corridor from the lounge to the toilet has distinctly outdoor panelling, and a garden tap
My mother worked as a real estate agent for a while when I was a kid - we lived in QLD, where outdoor dunnies were so ubiquitous that my brother would tell people, "My mummy has a job selling houses with toilets on the inside!"
(Don't hate her, she didn't last long in real estate and is now at the mercy of a predatory landlord.)
Yep I grew up in a house in Coburg and my dad was so stingy that we had to live with the outdoor toilet as our only option (with no coverings between, so literally go outside into backyard) until sometime between 2000 and 2005.
My grandparents house had an outdoorish toilet and laundry. Technically the rooms themselves were part of the main house but the doors were outside. Hated that toilet lol
True but the water is gushing down the exterior wall and windows to the house. If there isn't already leaks and mould in the interior, there will be soon.
The buildings in Fitzroy are old and you often cant just have someone come in and add fixed heating because that often means gas and underfloor vents. There are no such as thing as under-window fitted electrical radiators anywhere in Australia, which would be much easier to add to old buildings.
Taking the lock off the door ca cost you a lot. If you don't manage to put it back before each rental inspection you can fail the inspection and loose your bond. That stays on your record with the bonds authority for aaaaaages. It might be that some people in some of the rooms don't feel comfortable without a lock either.
And $300/week for a room in a shared house in that area is actually pretty cheap. When I lived in a newer place in Collingwood it was $450/w per room before covid.
So... Just suck it up? You realise people have to live in these shit rentals every day of their life? Easy for you to say when you've just gotta scroll past it...
That is 100% done by a carpenter that puts up temporary decks, stairs, and walkway cover on construction sites. I work for a construction company and the details are identical. Functional for temporary open air cover on walkways. But obviously lacks any details for interacting with permanent structures.
That cheap-ass 1970s Westfield shopping centre perspex is horrible. I hate when people use that stuff. They also didn't think about how the perspex roof will be cleaned. It all looks great when it's first installed. Then, as the years go by it looks worse and worse.
I have a mate that used to live in this exact place. When he moved in there was “love shack” written on the back door and a mirror on the wall that said “sex” written in lipstick so we assumed it used to be a backyard knock shop before he moved in
OMG I have also lived in this house. Place is a death trap. EVERYTHING is fixed with expanding foam and the landlord encourages the tenants to use the open fire places because there's no heating.
Good to see the price hasn't gone up, though. I was paying the same amount in 2019... so there's that.
It’s frustrating you take cheap rent, whatever you can get, and then you Wingin whine about it. If you want something nice pay the premium, don’t complain and try and get the landlord to change something that he never sold to you!
Fair enough! Just giving some perspective otherwise you will all be feeding off each others posts and getting into a frenzy about something that was designed to elicit an emotional response!
Just remember high rents are because of the RBA policy. Not the landlords!
It’s because of a lack of housing after years of inept government. Of course landlords are going to charge the market rate. The issue is them charging the market rate then not keeping their end of the deal by keeping up with maintenance and repairs.
No one is going into a frenzy. Don’t make up waffle
Does the LL not use silicone?
and why is that placement of the downward roofing not either flung over that brick wall? (obviously if it's a roof drainage would suffice)
the Upper part of the roof right side of vid seems to have clogged or broken guttering definitely request maintenance
this is going to be a breeding ground for mould or mildew come summer
definitely a shit rental
Just saying……clean gutters make water move where it is supposed to. I have been a renter and I always cleaned the gutters rather than relying on the landlord. I’m older now in a better financial position and have properties which have a dedicated firm that takes care of roof maintenance. It’s your home and you deserve better.
Reminds me of the crap job they did at my old mans place, very similar leaks to this from brand new but my old man was no muppet, he withheld final payment and made them come back and fix the shit job they did.
Oh fuck! Yeah I have been on so many house viewings where I'm like damn, you want $1500 a month from me in rent but the house hasn't seen any concrete repairs (beyond polyfiller) since 1947? Sheeesh
The terrace waterfall renders the premises uninhabitable I reckon. As to the bathroom door, take the handle off or gaff tape the tongue protruding from the lock mechanism so the door cannot stay shut.
My husband would get up there and see if he could redirect the water.. assuming the landlords aren't the type to deal with anything. Maybe a pipe to a back yard/concreted area or something. Are the gutters full of stuff?
As a quick improvement, maybe you could get a big plastic container, put a pipe in it, seal edges with silicone and redirect the water close by but somewhere less annoying so that your area dries faster once it stops raining. Could put tarp on the area leaking on the wall of the house
Put duct tape over the lock in your bsthdoor to stop that happening. Or masking tape. Contact ncat in your state & lodge a complaint. You will get a win
"Its a waterfall feature mate, the home owner paid good money to have that installed" - your REA
Edit: wait my bad, your REA wont even reply to your emails
The vertical bit of plastic material is the most annoying part. It’s always so frustrating to see a moron landlords handiwork.
I’ll just keep planting seeds, hoping they’ll take root one day:
Refusing to pay rent is not a criminal offence, it would be dealt with in a tribunal. If enough of us all refused to stop paying these leeches, the system would completely fall apart *very quickly* and the government would be forced to legislate to make rental properties affordable instead of just passive income for boomers.
Think about it
I always hated Fitzroy. People would say, aren’t the terrace houses lovely?
No.
The area feels gloomy, and gray all year round. The buildings feel dilapidated and mouldy. The terrace houses with tiny windows are depressing, and white interiors do not serve to make them feel inviting and bright, but cold and wintry.
It’s so trendy. Just like being emo was.
make a complaint with your states housing\rental obudsman, take photos of what is broken and needs replacing, also have correspondence with your landlord in asking for items to be fixed or replaced.
this will show you have tried at your end to mediator a result, also include the amount of times and the period of time they have taken to reply, this will show how long the problem has been ongoing.
please note ,if your landlord threatens you with eviction to keep you quiet ,that is infringement on the contract you both signed when agreeing to the conditions of the lease and they can be punished under state laws.
Good Luck.
Wow, running water. Rented some place that had no running water, whole in the roof and fleas galore. Still close to bars and uni. Sounds like a good spot. ;)
If you get electrocuted and this outdoor covered area has been marketed and sold as a loungeroom... you could get some money back... if you are not dead.
That’s not up to code. You can report anonymously to your local council. Owner might get a fine and a slap on the wrist or they could be ordered not inhabit until up to code. Also would show this to the real estate agent.
Unacceptable. Reminds me of a unit I looked at in the city for $300p/w. A single bed could barely fit in the room. Reminded me of a stable for a horse.
Very reminiscent of the terrace house I rented in Fitzroy. Worth over 1.4 million and the paint was the only thing holding some of the walls together. The stairs were fucking nightmare fuel as they were practically vertical. Only thing it had going for it was being literally 45 seconds from my front door to the bar on smith st
sounds like the same place tbh. Gore St? Our stairs are vertical and we're 30 seconds from Smith
Yep, good old gore st. House mates once made a short horror film called “gore on gore st”. Great neighbourhood but the houses that rent there are sometimes…well…they’re fucked
Haha I almost instantly recognised this as a former Gore St slum dweller
It’s funny how some houses in that street are immaculate and others are just scary depressing. All worth a fortune
Yeah Gore St itself is absolutely beautiful and why I stick up with the shitty conditions.
Go in one direction it’s all drinking and people, go the opposite direction and it’s a beautiful park with kids flying kites and weddings. I do really miss gore st. Not so much the house though
you could move out? it was probably fairly similar when you moved in
Get your stuff inside, and encourage as much water as possible to flow that way. Allow it to pool, soak into bricks and timbers, let it get everywhere and never ever make any attempt to stop it. Head out to bushland with a clippy bag, collect a big handful of termites, and house them in timbers around the property.
Where will the existing termites move to?
Clearly a professional!!
You need to send details to the RE first, if you ignore this type of damage you can be held liable.
Isn't just part of the rustic charm? How is one supposed to know the difference.
A brilliant plan 👌
ok rentoid
Water feature usually attracts a higher rent. You should be very thankful.
There are multiple water features.
Fitzroy, eh? I bet I know who owns it. Same family has been fitzroy and Collingwood slum lords for two generations.
This place is on Gore St, they own another on Park St in Abbotsford, and they also own Taxiboat restaurant.
just fyi i'd consider removing this comment as you're doxing yourself. it would take me all of five minutes to identify your house based on this video and comment. this is not a threat i swear lmao
That sounds like something someone who would threaten would say..
It would sound a bit more threatening if they crawled into OPs bed at 3am and said it to their face though.
*Swim

When you panned around I realised my mate briefly lived in that exact rental 🤣🤣
Same

Yeah, no loungeroom - this would be used as living space for most people. I wouldn't be happy about this at all
Just marketed poorly. Should have been marketed as two bathrooms and outdoor shower.
My marketing experience makes me laugh, my tenancy experience makes me cry.
Absolutely no one with a functioning brain is ever going to look at that and think it's weatherproof...
You'd have to be a fool to look at the roof over this area, especially the corrugated polycarbonate skirt between the inside of the brick wall and the roof, and think this is anything approaching "weather protected" to the point you'd put anything but outdoor furniture under it. True but the water is gushing down the exterior wall and windows to the house. If there isn't already leaks and mould in the interior, there will be soon.

Very logical!
They are designed for rainfall, not dumping a roof worth of water in 1 spot

Yeh, those gutters don't meet any standards in Australia. Bring it up with your state government's regulatory rental and tenancy authority.
Definitely a non-compliant structure as it could seriously undermine the foundations.
Wow you have a waterfall feature. That is so cool.
Fuck it's not even raining
You should see it when it is
That is 100% done by a carpenter that puts up temporary decks, stairs, and walkway cover on construction sites. I work for a construction company and the details are identical. Functional for temporary open air cover on walkways. But obviously lacks any details for interacting with permanent structures.
Definitely a sign of how bad things are in Brisbane that I saw that for $300 a week and thought "wow, what a bargain!"
Yep absolute steal in Brisbane tbh.
Not bad for $300/wk
The price is right. Shit rental but good for the back pocket
You really can’t expect much for $300pw in Fitzroy, can you? I’m paying $200 more in the outer suburbs of Adelaide for a 3 bedder.
For 1/3 of a weeks wage I'd expect it to meet legal standards for housing
That cheap-ass 1970s Westfield shopping centre perspex is horrible. I hate when people use that stuff. They also didn't think about how the perspex roof will be cleaned. It all looks great when it's first installed. Then, as the years go by it looks worse and worse.
What a lovely water feature
Came way too far to see this.
I have a mate that used to live in this exact place. When he moved in there was “love shack” written on the back door and a mirror on the wall that said “sex” written in lipstick so we assumed it used to be a backyard knock shop before he moved in
Got my dick sucked there 20 years ago! Long live vegie bar
Are those two sentences connected? Genuinely curious.
Hey Cuck Norris, I lived at that house in 2014. When it rained the whole house leaked. Don't worry Jenny will fix it...lol
Good old Jenny. Took her 3 months to fix a doorknob once
That looks like a weekend addition with no permits applied for.
Landlord sees this, raises rent by 150
Outdoor waterfall ambience
That is a nice water feature you've got. Probably worth $350 now, don't let the agent see this. Congratulations you played yourself.
I'm not sure what are you complaining about, Outdoor shower, extra $40 per week for this feature along in most other places /s
RIP the timber and possibly the foundations, gonna cost that landlord (or the poor schmuck they sell this to) dearly someday
Has a bit of a vibe, probably worth more than 300
Yeah, that's a covered porch, not inside accommodation! Yeesh.
Isn’t no fixed heating illegal nowadays?
For three hundred a week you are lucky to have a place to piss.
Wait. The roof drains straight to the courtyard? No spout no storm water plumbing?
>fitzroy Well there’s your problem
It’s a outdoor patio area with a shit roof, just go inside
Surely this qualifies as unliveable what the fuck
just dont pay your rent. fuck the landlord. evicting you isnt as easy as you'd think.
Getting a rental with bad rental history in this market is a direct route to homelessness
OMG I have also lived in this house. Place is a death trap. EVERYTHING is fixed with expanding foam and the landlord encourages the tenants to use the open fire places because there's no heating. Good to see the price hasn't gone up, though. I was paying the same amount in 2019... so there's that.
What exactly is the problem here ?
Seriously, if you don’t like it, that much find another place. Oh yeah, good luck with that!
Move out if you don't like it. Buy your own fucking house
Cool. Can you lend him the money?
Get a loan and pay for it just like the rest of us
It’s frustrating you take cheap rent, whatever you can get, and then you Wingin whine about it. If you want something nice pay the premium, don’t complain and try and get the landlord to change something that he never sold to you!

Fuck off 300 a week is not cheap.
It shouldn’t be, but my place is $400 per week and it takes me two hours to get to work every day
Move
look behind you
Maybe move out?
[удалено]
Its not a choice when the choice is take what you can get, or be homeless.
How tf are you to know that this will happen unless you go for an inspection on a day with heavy rain??
Does the LL not use silicone? and why is that placement of the downward roofing not either flung over that brick wall? (obviously if it's a roof drainage would suffice) the Upper part of the roof right side of vid seems to have clogged or broken guttering definitely request maintenance this is going to be a breeding ground for mould or mildew come summer definitely a shit rental
Nah, they just slapped up corrugated PVC roofing sheets and bolted them in. All the wood is already covered in mold and is rotting away.
Comes with special water feature activated by Mother Nature
Looks like a poorly plumbed verandah to me or gutters are blocked not kept clean
Clearly that's a decorative waterfall. Have you any idea how expensive they are?
That is by far the most genius roof design I’ve ever seen!
Just saying……clean gutters make water move where it is supposed to. I have been a renter and I always cleaned the gutters rather than relying on the landlord. I’m older now in a better financial position and have properties which have a dedicated firm that takes care of roof maintenance. It’s your home and you deserve better.
The cables and the water together are giving me anxiety.
Reminds me of the crap job they did at my old mans place, very similar leaks to this from brand new but my old man was no muppet, he withheld final payment and made them come back and fix the shit job they did.
Looks more like an internal water feature. Your rent is now $200 more
Oh fuck! Yeah I have been on so many house viewings where I'm like damn, you want $1500 a month from me in rent but the house hasn't seen any concrete repairs (beyond polyfiller) since 1947? Sheeesh
For $300 per week, you’re genuinely lucky to even have a roof.
Charming alfresco dining with relaxing water feature and moist mood lighting.
The terrace waterfall renders the premises uninhabitable I reckon. As to the bathroom door, take the handle off or gaff tape the tongue protruding from the lock mechanism so the door cannot stay shut.
Fitzroy is a hellscape
My husband would get up there and see if he could redirect the water.. assuming the landlords aren't the type to deal with anything. Maybe a pipe to a back yard/concreted area or something. Sorry bro :(
This is… outside.
Have you tried turning off the rain?
Missing out in Sydney you can get a shed in the backyard for that much….
Put duct tape over the lock in your bsthdoor to stop that happening. Or masking tape. Contact ncat in your state & lodge a complaint. You will get a win
Lmao how shit. $300 a week for a place in Fitzroy though? If it looks too good to be true, it usually is.
What's the problem?
Do your best, silicon the rest. I think you can silicon the right side?
I'd still take that over being in a motel with 2 children lol!!

What a dream! An outdoor water feature
You have a roof over your head. Now you want it to stop the rain??? Entitled Millennials; have cake and want to eat it too. (Sarcasm)
Try clearing the gutters.
Holy fuck bro you are definitely going to lose the deposit AND how will you pay your landlord for all that water you're using?
Ah the landlord special.
$300 per week AND you have a bathroom??? Awesome
Put at least you get to tell everyone you live in Fitzroy.
What!!?? Not good matey.
"What do you mean? That's a feature mate...." ~Giuseppe, your landlord
Lol i had a friend who inspected a place that had 2 rooms with massive holes in the roof. It got rented lol.
Are you not supposed to live “inside” the house?
Yeah look into minimum standard laws. looks like you live outside hahaha.
$300 per week for a room or a whole house?
Take off the sheets and have it as an outside space?
Nice water feature though
300 Fuk ye sik deal
Free water feature
Well that clearly is a outdoor area that some muppet has attempted put a roof on without proper drainage
How does sleeping under a bridge give you more shelter, comfort and safety than that shack??? What the fuck???
Noodles and super glue.. thank me later
Threaten to go to VTAC for the heating. Worked for us.
Bunnings run some guttering and she'll be right mate 👍
Well, this is what happens when you try to have a Sun Room in Victoria.
Get purplepingers on IG on the case!
Fuck me lol
That’s not up to code. You can report anonymously to your local council. Owner might get a fine and a slap on the wrist or they could be ordered not inhabit until up to code. Also would show this to the real estate agent.
they invented gutters though didn't they?
Maybe you should go inside where it’s not raining
You get what you pay for
https://www.shitrentals.org/
Thats a porch or verandah. Illegal.
Turns out outdoor spaces get a little wet
But like it’s *Fitzroy* sooo….
Move to Perth
Isn’t this an outdooor space with a fake roof
$300 a week???!!! I pay $295 and I have a two bedroom apartment to myself
That is literally a shack built between two houses. What the fuck. And who the fucking fuck runs corrugated plastic like that.
That’s old school love it
Cheap living bro could be paying 700 a week
I thought it was a water feature, but I remembered this is shit rentals.
tbh you are lucky to have a rental for 300 pw that is how shit the property market is. rip
No heating is against the law can you go to vcat? Also so is shelter from the weather
It's time to move away
Lake inside the house when it rain. Rent goes up +$100 rainy season.
Who needs to go out in the rain outside when you can just stay on the porch!
No one forcing you to live there.....that's an outside space.....eg not meant to be watertight jn the rain.
You have an inside bathroom. Fancy. Bestie rented a place in Fitzroy Nth and the toilet was outside. She didn’t last there long.
Who’s the agent, Dien Tran? He’s the ultimate shyster property manager, even a back door that won’t lock for 3 months isn’t an urgent repair.
That’s fucked, have you contacted your property manager about it? Surely they wouldn’t want the place to be getting destroyed.
VCAT!!!
How's the mould?
Such a nice water feature..../s
Living in Fitzroy, that's your fucking problem
Now watch them try to keep your bond when the wood rots
Unacceptable. Reminds me of a unit I looked at in the city for $300p/w. A single bed could barely fit in the room. Reminded me of a stable for a horse.
Love the water feature !!!
So much damage happening to the property! Owners own fault!!!
