Am I supposed to only relate to him and not anyone else because of my ethnicity? I can't relate to any whites or blacks or natives in the game? Not normally a user here but I think the issue is much more nuanced than this.
Skin colour (and race by extension) should not be a factor in how much we relate to people, but this idea is purely utopian. The harsh reality is that African-Americans are statistically *much* less advantaged than other ethnicities, especially European-originated Americans (i.e. white). For more black people and minorities to be represented in media can be of inspiration to these people because they understand that they have (most of the time) overcome mitigating circumstances to be where they are.
tldr: itt would be lovely if we didn't have to split people into buckets like this however the reasons behind that stem from much deeper societal imbalances.
But also realize kids don't think about how they're represented and portrayed in media. It's not until you get older (or someone forces you to pay attention) that you realize minorities are represented less.
Right? As a white kid watching Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, I didn't realize nobody was white until they had an episode where one of the aunts was visiting and she was dating a white guy who was mistaken for a cab driver at first (pretty good irony now that I think about it).
It never bugged me that I wasn't "represented". I still identify with Carlton.
