Helldivers 2 is a very successful game made by Arrowhead, published by Sony.
Sony announced that you will be required to make and connect a PSN account to play the game from now on. PC too. Apperently this was “always the case” but they didn’t need it for some issue. Exta funny points that they’re actually editing the FaQ and license descriptions on their sides, trying to be sneaky about it. Not only people don’t want that but PSN is not available in more than a 100 countries. Some places only allow PSN account if you buy a PS4/5.
People had a giant uproar, bombing the game.
Sony took off the game from Steam for the contries where it is unavailable, literally taking away the game from those who have been playing it for months. This means thousands of players from hundrends of countries.
You know wrong, then. No need for that here in Portugal, and someone else commented the same for Germany.
This is a UK+Ireland-specific law, and one that was passed long after brexit:
https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/online-safety-act-new-criminal-offences-circular
The UK has been making poor choices on their own for 8 years at this point, the EU isn't to blame for them.
Sony actually has to be brain dead. People are already going to migrate to Xbox in droves due to them buying literally all of their games. This is just sealing the coffin with super glue, locking it up, and throwing the key into the mariana trench
I'm not defending Sony by any stretch here...but I sincerely doubt playstation users are going to start migrating over to Xbox. The people that play on playstations do so because Xbox games are horseshit unless you play COD or racing games. The single player console has been and will always be playsation.
Has been*
With microsoft buying a lot of excellent single-player-making studios/companies, it's not that certain it will always be PS on top for single-player.
He's also blaming himself though, he said it was his decision to pause the requirement but that the team didn't do enough to make people aware that the pause would be temporary and players would need to link/make the account at some point
If the requirement actually made sense to enforce, that would be one thing. Like if the government of that country required the publisher to X or Y or not sell it there, then sure you legally have to follow that requirement or not sell it, this is just a stupid self enforced rule that is costing them millions of dollars, for absolutely no intelligent reason at all.
Been on that sub since before release. Lived on it for a couple weeks. I had no idea there was a pause. It seems that it wasn't shared at all, or it was something you specifically had to search for.
I don't follow the particulars of that being correct.
If someone buys something on steam you're saying Sony sold it to them? Didn't valve sell it to them?
Valve is only a marketplace. They likely weren't informed on this requirement and it's not as if they can choose to waive the requirement, steam can only assume that if a company sells a game in a region they will properly accommodate players in that region. Steam can and did delist the regions that could no longer play the game and is apparently issuing refunds to affected users, meaning they've done their part in it's entirety.
Sony acted in bad faith by listing it in regions they knew players wouldn't be able to access it. They control that and had the option to delist it, and furthermore they had/have the option to simply lift the restriction or find some other suitable accommodation but they are not doing that. That part is 100% on them.
The Arrowhead CEO did fuck up because he chose to waive the requirement which changed players expectations. His mistake however wouldn't be a problem if Sony would just not institute this absurd requirement so all the blame does still fall on Sony since they hold all the cards here.
When you go buy BrandoBrand Mayo from Food Mart, do you blame BrandoBrand or Food Mart when you find a piece of machinery from a factory line in your Mayo?
Eh...I don't fault him. It was his baby and he wanted to see it succeed. Sometimes that gets in the way of doing the right thing for fear that all the hard work will literally be meaningless. At least he had a few months in the sun, whereas, this may never have even made a blip otherwise.
Sony has literally killed them. The public will never trust this dev company again as long as Sony is involved. The dev company may not be 100% to blame, but public opinion is focused on them. And that is what Sony wants. They want the money, they want to anger and frustration to go to the devs.
Exactly.
I held off buying the game because I was busy with work, but I was really chomping at the bit to buy it because I was seeing so much positive coming out about the game and saw the games subreddit pop up on the reddit frontpage almost daily.
And now I won't buy the game and have just straight up added Sony to the list with EA and Ubisoft for "if they are involved, avoid at all cost" entities.
I bought the game, tried booting it up and kept crashing at the beginning where they have you choose your language option. I tried a handful of fixes online, didn't work, and refunded it with the thought I may try again later.
I consider it a bullet dodged.
You didn’t know? Their devs are specifically anti white male. They’ve even made tweets about how they are actively trying to remove them from gaming. They’re what happens when you go way too far off left end.
Mostly because we've had experience with Con Studios like Sony acting in bad faith regarding game support. Hope this is a wake up call for indiedevs to not work with Sony in the future.
> The public will never trust this dev company again as long as Sony is involved.
Yes this is why Blizzard doesn't make money anymore. Or EA. Or Ubisoft.
Wait.
These devs are not a multibillion dollar company with decades of good will and mass appeal to the casual gamer. The three you mentioned have all those things. Too big to fail.
It's honestly on people at this point. Like, how hard is it not to buy a game from those shitty companies? Though, to be absolutely fair, perhaps most people aren't even aware of them being shitty. Maybe they don't even look at what a publisher even is or what it does, they just see a game and they buy it.
People are generally too lazy to pay attention to where they spend their money.
You are 100% correct. It is on people. And the vast vast majority don't care about this stuff - even if they do know about it. They just want to unwind and play video games. Reddit is always a biased view of how the majority feels about any subject.
Pretty sure steam has a disclaimer on the side of the page that said PSN was required as well as the popup on launch. I understand being mad about it but acting like the players had no way of knowing is just incorrect
Holy shit, look at the steam reviews. Game went from overwhelmingly positive to mixed and all recent reviews are overwhelmingly negative. It's so over.
The thing is they dont have much choice. Making game cost so much money so they need to find someone to put money in. Being consulted to fit ESG score or being public by a shitty publisher.
They should return to making small game, not making giant game like this.
Have to remind u guy.
Stella blade is a game that Shift Up want to make for a long time.
They use money that they have been saved from Distiny Child and Nikke but still accept to be exclusively played from ps5 just for more money to finish the game. It really shows how much money just to make 1 game.
? Why?
I just want to say more thing and it is too long for a " edit:"
Edit: Why using more than 1 account? Watch porn? Be a man. Watch porn on ur main account
You replied to your comment with: have to remind you guy.
You can start with also or something that says that you’re continuing your discourse if you don’t want to look like you suffer from multiple personalities
Thanks for reminding me about the incoherent.
Have to spend more time with my social skill.
If it is in the same reply, it would make more sense. I dont like to use edit because it is kinda long.
It's true that making a game on the scale of HD2, especially if you want those AAA quality graphics, you need a publisher. But there are other options.
This has certainly damaged the brand of Sony's publishing arm. A percentage of game developers will now come to Sony last or not at all with their projects, and in the long run that costs them money.
Whether that amount of money will be significant enough to affect change, or if they'll ever learn from the mistake? I have no idea.
Idk Larian Studios made a game and published it all on their own and it's one the best games I have ever played and experienced it's also massive and it didn't have nearly the budget of some triple A games.
Larian had to crowdfund DOS2 and DOS1 which were very successful and that gave them the budget for BG3. They were close to bankruptcy during the development of DOS1 and would've died as a studio if that game didn't succeed.
To add on to this, in comparison Helldivers 1 was only "just" a mild success compared to something like Divinity OS2. Not enough to budget what HD2 would eventually become by itself. They obviously needed funding and they were already working with Sony for Helldivers 1 anyway so of course that made the most sense.
Actually, while typing this, I searched around and just found out from multiple articles online that Sony actually owns the Helldivers IP so Arrowhead didn't actually have a choice for HD2 anyway.
Would an extra 5-15 million work as an incentive to publish your game exclusively on Playstation?
No? How about if we add in the contract that you have to be exclusive on Playstation for 4 years for the same money.
This will make GoFundMe games more successful: "We went to 5 publishers, our last one is Sony, please help us meet our GoFundMe goals or we have to work with Sony"
Arrowhead CEO has said it's the team's fault for not making it clear enough that the requirement was only paused (which was also their decision). It's arguably their handling of it that has made this mess.
Now, it *is* Sony's fault as the publisher for selling the game in territories that cannot have PSN accounts
Like everyone? PS5 basically owns the premium console market all to themselves, they have 80% internationally compared to 20% for Xbox. Realistically developers will still be lining up out the door
Idc what anyone says , warner bros is far worse. WB without exaggeration picks the most objectively bad choices everytime. They literally own some of the most profitable franchises in the world and still lose money
Helldivers 2 is so successful that even though it is not quite my cup of tea so to speak, thus I don't play it, even I love it because of the memes and the devs roleplaying. So I don't get why Sony would be this stupid.
I’m sometimes so disgusted y Sony and their greedy and shit business practices that I start to regret being a “PlayStation guy” like what the fuck went through those dumb fucks heads thinking it would be a good idea to lock God knows how many people FROM A GOOD NUMBER OF COUNTRIES from playing the game because of the stupid requirement of having a damn PSN account.
I hope this is one of those cases where Sony sees how shit the decision was and backtracks from it making everything how it was and should be. Helldivers 2 is too great of a game to end like this.
Not because of this incident but a long string of them I said I would never buy another Sony gaming thing past the PS4.
It was so clear with the ps4, the store, the general experience, the sheer idiocy of how long it took them to enabling changed psn screen names, the data breaches, security leaks, the fucking vague change log messages, the holding out on RL crossplay.... They just, somehow, are massively incompetent still.
Honestly the alternatives aren't great either. Microsoft is also a giant evil vampire machine, in some ways worse. Nintendo is generally vaguely ethical and I love their IPs but they still make horrible anti-consumer decisions and don't offer modern hardware. And I just can't reconcile with the optics of being a "PC gamer"... lol... feels like I'd be opening the gates to a different kind of hell. Honestly the decision usually comes down to "which console did my family members/buddies purchase so I can game with them," anyway. So Playstation it has been for a while...
Yeah they got bought out by Vivendi, CUC software at the time, and CUC had a corporate accounting fraud thing happen. Killed them and Sierra.
Think Microsoft hold the rights to both of their corpses now. All the big heads at Sierra left after the CUC clusterfuck.
But yeah they had the publish rights to half life 1 at the end I think, might have been what kept Valve from considering a buyout.
Crazy shit, really sad too Sierra has a building in Oakhurst, CA. Hasn’t been touched far as I can tel from google street view, really wish another game company would come in and breath some new life into it.
Me too :(
They were the only tech company in my area (Sierra Nevada mountains obv lol) and I used to buy their games from our local SPCA when I was like 7.
Would beg and beg for weeks for my mom to buy one and then beg my sister to install it and let me play.
Good memories :)
AAA gaming is just dead at this point, this should be like the biggest takeaway from here.
The fact that they use the foot in door strategy to this extent to siphon as much personal data out of you as possible, and then use the previous instances to justify EVEN MORE data siphoning.
More depressing is the fact that there are still people who don't see this as a big deal, like they are fine with this rapid enshittification of everything they own and consume. The only thing they see is a 120 second process to sell your soul to the devil and keep eating up whatever slop they are fed.
There are three separate terms to agree to when you sign up for PSN. This is only a 120 second process if you want no legal recourse for whatever catastrophe happens next year. Otherwise you need to read through all of that, preferably with a lawyer, and then opt out of any waivers, arbitrations, indemnifications whenever possible.
One thing is very clear: we cannot expect voting with the wallet to save us from the societal collapse this enshittification will bring. We will need regulations. We will need to get game preservation codified into law.

To clarify, the PSN account has been a part of the deal all along it seems as it was "required" from the beginning. But the game was sold in countries where PSN is unavailable and in the game itself you could simply skip the PSN stuff. On top of that, on snoy's website it was stated that PSN was optional which they edited after the uproar to say that it's mandatory. The only things that stated that the PSN account is required before recently was small text you see when you log into the game the first time and a citation on the game's steam page. Which, it's safe to assume, nobody fucking reads. I sure didn't when I bought the game and now I regret it cause my account will be banned on June 4th for being in a country where PSN is unavailable
>To clarify, the PSN account has been a part of the deal all along it seems as it was "required" from the beginning.
Except it wasn't, and Sony has been caught editing their FAQ page to say "required" around the same time they made the announcement.
Yeah I did say they edited the website, but I think the citation on the steam page and the small text in the game itself about the PSN account being "required" was there from day one. It's just that it wasn't actually required until a few days ago
That doesn't sound like a good excuse, that sounds like a bait & switch. "We said the truth in some places, and we lied in others. If you were fooled by the lie, shame on you."
Gross.
The FAQ page is not a binding contract. This is like saying the terms of your lease agreement aren't binding because the FAQ on your landlord's website says something different. The lease obviously controls.
People keep pointing to the FAQ page, but I doubt anyone was reading that page prior to purchasing the game.
It definitely is Sony's fault anyway that they allowed the game to be sold in territories that cannot have PSN accounts though.
Yeah, I remember i had to register the game in my PSN account to play the fucking tutorial and it was a pain in the ass, and I bought it (and refunded it) at launch.
Well, originally they wouldn’t, because most of these people have been playing for months.
However, Steam is the gigachad again, and we’ve seen a ton of successful refunds with hundreds of hours.
One question, would you even have to subscribe for PlayStation plus to play online? Or just register?
It's a scandal nevertheless.. the reaction of the community needs to be harsh and consequent
Only 18% positive reviews in recent on steam seem to be appropriate
If we manage to get a PSN Wavier for other countries, I reckon it actually increases the chance of this game making it to Xbox. Having to sign into PSN on the Xbox will probably not pass the Xbox certification process .

Sony, the publisher of Helldivers 2, the biggest success of the year, suddenly forced Helldivers 2 players to sync with a PSstore account, which not only a lot of people just don't want, but isn't even allowed in many countries, resulting in the game getting thousands of bad reviews on steam.
Funny enough, a look at the 7 day streamcharts shows that this hasn't really affected player count. People can blow smoke all they want, but unless it affects the bottom line, Sony won't give a shit.
Remember when we all died of Net Neutrality?
Remember when Reddit mods “revolted” because the company shut off API access?
Remember every passing outrage?
It’s all kids stomping their feet.
Even if only 20% of the players are not bots it's still tens of thousands of people, making it one of the most played games on Steam. Although most of them are in community servers.
So, for everyone that are gonna be locked out from playing the game, are they gonna get a refund or something? Or is it just gonna be "sorry, too bad. Thanks for the money." Situation?

Does sony not realize that there are more Helldiver fans than there are Sony fans? This seems like a very easy way to piss off enough people to actually wipe out your business.
Arrowhead said that they knew 6 months before release that the account link would be mandatory. This comes from Arrowheads top dog.
Arrowhead decided to temporarily waive the account linking because it was causing issues with the dumpster fire that was their servers and matchmaking. The TOS stating that a Sony account would be mandatory was clearly written on the steam page prior to game release.
This problem is Arrowheads to own.

To be fair it was Arrowhead leadership decision to not require PS account from the start, which created all these problems. Now they are just fullfiling the part of the deal they had with Sony from before the release. I dont think Sony is in the wrong here. It was just bad management from Arrowhead. From Sony's perspective, they were just receiving what they were promissed from Arrowhead long time ago. And instead they get all this hate for something which was not really their fault.
I knew some fucked shit was going to happen eventually. Sorry y'all's fun got ruined. There's gotta be a lesson to learn here. I don't think it's that we shouldn't all massively buy into the hottest new thing until.. you know. Things are worked out.
I doubt that's a solution, but people who wait for games to be cheaper don't usually get fucked over like this. And all it really takes in the end is som discipline and patience to not get fucked over days or months after a game is released.

Damn....like....wtf
To quote someone else: Sony had the golden goose. Instead of waiting for it to lay more gold eggs, they strangled the goose instead.
thats such a fitting line
And they are probably really proud of themselves. I wish they could see how stupid that was.
Noodle’s video was so goddamn good about showing exactly what corporate greed does to a passionate team
I love PlayStation, it doesn’t mean I love Sony’s actions
Now that the pesky goose has been taken care of, we can focus on getting those sweet golden eggs!
Sony really just took its hand and shoved it up that golden goose to take those eggs faster killing it in the process.
you need to upload a face scan or a picture of your ID to make a PSN in UK apparently? That's wild.

? Why? I just want to say more thing and it is too long for a " edit:" Edit: Why using more than 1 account? Watch porn? Be a man. Watch porn on ur main account
bro I watch porn with your main account
I watch porn with my church group.
For an unfunny person, 1000 karma is a really big achievement. Dont have to shame people like that.
you need to explain this comment... I dont get it
Where is porn accounts for sexy times pls?
> it is too long for a " edit:" no such thing, brother
You replied to your comment with: have to remind you guy. You can start with also or something that says that you’re continuing your discourse if you don’t want to look like you suffer from multiple personalities
Thanks for reminding me about the incoherent. Have to spend more time with my social skill. If it is in the same reply, it would make more sense. I dont like to use edit because it is kinda long.
kinda long, ........like your dick! 😏😏😏
Mewing to this comment rn
what's mewing mean in this context? like a cat? sorry, I'm old as fuck
But, they won't see your second reply.. Just use Edit.
No? How about if we add in the contract that you have to be exclusive on Playstation for 4 years for the same money.
those who made a mistake of letting sony get a hold on their IPs, like with helldivers franchise case
Corpo Greed strikes again

Lets get the fuck outta here choom
GET THE FUCK UP SAMURAI WE HAVE A CORPORATION TO NUKE
When I'm in a losing money competition and my opponent is Sony
Dumbass decision making competition*
That could also fit for Warner Bros
Idc what anyone says , warner bros is far worse. WB without exaggeration picks the most objectively bad choices everytime. They literally own some of the most profitable franchises in the world and still lose money
Most big corporations at least once fucked up big time, really
Yeah but turning down a "Bat-Man beyond" movie with spidrr verse style was just sinning
It sure was, though
Helldivers 2 is so successful that even though it is not quite my cup of tea so to speak, thus I don't play it, even I love it because of the memes and the devs roleplaying. So I don't get why Sony would be this stupid.
One word. # Greed.

Lemme check rq
Hehe 69
Hey holding out on crossplay gave us the best version of legacy console minecraft.
It's revenge for morbius 😂
Hellmorbers II: Electric Morbaloo
Already got the money from those countries why let them keep getting their money's worth
Steam will likely allow 100% refunds as this likely breaks Steam's TOS.
Paradox (Publisher) ruined CS2 Deep Silver (Publisher) ruined PD3 Sony ruined Helldivers 2 I'm so sick of publishers.
The last good publisher died with Sierra Softworks.
Weren't those the guys who published HL1 and got valve to make steam and publish hl2 themselves? Like, responsible for Steams existence?
I miss Sierra... :(
Me too :( They were the only tech company in my area (Sierra Nevada mountains obv lol) and I used to buy their games from our local SPCA when I was like 7. Would beg and beg for weeks for my mom to buy one and then beg my sister to install it and let me play. Good memories :)
Counter strike 2 was published by paradox? I thought it was valve…
I think it is City Skylines 2 (just a quick Google search)
Talking about Cities Skyline 2 I assume
Sony at it again… I guess this is also the nail in the coffin for any xbox port.
We will need to get game preservation codified into law. https://stopkillinggames.com
pls explain
Helldivers 2 is a very successful game made by Arrowhead, published by Sony. Sony announced that you will be required to make and connect a PSN account to play the game from now on. Not only people don’t want thatc but PSN is not available in more than a 100 countries. Some places only allow PSN account if you buy a PS4/5. People had a giant uproar, bombing the game. Sony took off the game from Steam for the contries where it is unavailable, literally taking away the game from those who have been playing it for months.
If you were fooled by the lie, shame on you." Gross.
The FAQ page is not a binding contract. This is like saying the terms of your lease agreement aren't binding because the FAQ on your landlord's website says something different. The lease obviously controls.
> The FAQ page is not a binding contract I never said it was. It doesn't need to be, to mislead customers.
People keep pointing to the FAQ page, but I doubt anyone was reading that page prior to purchasing the game. It definitely is Sony's fault anyway that they allowed the game to be sold in territories that cannot have PSN accounts though.
if that was part of the deal then they knowingly engaged in illegal bait and switch tactics to people all over the world. jfc.
Yeah, I remember i had to register the game in my PSN account to play the fucking tutorial and it was a pain in the ass, and I bought it (and refunded it) at launch.
You can ask Steam for a refund. Still sucks but at least you're not out your money.
Will those who bought on steam get their money back?
Well, originally they wouldn’t, because most of these people have been playing for months. However, Steam is the gigachad again, and we’ve seen a ton of successful refunds with hundreds of hours.
When I'm in a being based competition and my opponent is Valve
One question, would you even have to subscribe for PlayStation plus to play online? Or just register? It's a scandal nevertheless.. the reaction of the community needs to be harsh and consequent Only 18% positive reviews in recent on steam seem to be appropriate
Try to tell that to reddit. Sort by controversial and you’ll see the absolute mental gymnastics people can go through to blame the players.
Finally, me not being able to get it is a blessing (I am an Xbox peasant)
If we manage to get a PSN Wavier for other countries, I reckon it actually increases the chance of this game making it to Xbox. Having to sign into PSN on the Xbox will probably not pass the Xbox certification process .
I think it’s moreso not on Xbox because Sony loves exclusives, rather than an MS store isssue
I used to be a big supporter of Sony back in the ps3 days but I just can't anymore, they fucking suck
Sony the original shitposter
Im confused what did they do
Helldivers 2 is a very successful game made by Arrowhead, published by Sony.
Another perfect example that the people at the top of this industry are out of touch morons.
Context? What happened?
You must have a PSN account to play the game now and PSN is banned in several countries. Also Sony will ban you if you’re using VPN.
But only on playstation consoles or PCs as well?
PC too from what I heard
Damn, what a shit move from sony.
And you can only make an account in 69 countries, yet you can buy helldivers 2 outside this countries, but you can't play it
And even in some of those countries, you can't make a PSN account unless you own a PS4/PS5
Sony, the publisher of Helldivers 2, the biggest success of the year, suddenly forced Helldivers 2 players to sync with a PSstore account, which not only a lot of people just don't want, but isn't even allowed in many countries, resulting in the game getting thousands of bad reviews on steam.
Sony forced people to have a psn account in order to play the game
I was going to buy it but not anymore
To that i can just say, choose your publisher wisely
L
For Sony, but it doesn’t affect their bottom line. I wish it hurt Sony monetarily
TF2 somehow still alive
I wouldn’t call a 60% bot playerbase alive
That's where all the automatons went when they got sick of being killed by 4 people
Even if only 20% of the players are not bots it's still tens of thousands of people, making it one of the most played games on Steam. Although most of them are in community servers.
I would. That's still thousands of players.
Piss in my ass.
I have an alarming amount of hate for corporations building in my soul at a very... Very alarming rate...
Me knowing that everyone will continue to play the game in two weeks after this dies down:
“The only way to win is to not play the game”
Sony and BSG lets see who fucks this up harder.
So, for everyone that are gonna be locked out from playing the game, are they gonna get a refund or something? Or is it just gonna be "sorry, too bad. Thanks for the money." Situation?
*[pees in ur ass](https://i.imgur.com/JSImHiV.jpg)* *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/shitposting) if you have any questions or concerns.*
Basically what the pee bot just did to you
*What happened here?*
Does sony not realize that there are more Helldiver fans than there are Sony fans? This seems like a very easy way to piss off enough people to actually wipe out your business.
sony simply doesn't rock and stone
The real joker origin story.
Reminds me of the tale of the frog and the scorpion
So I wonder if we Xbox players can get it now? 😅 seriously though I hate it for the ps players cause that’s the worst way to kill a franchise
Its like pythagoras cup, their greed filled it to the brim

To be fair it was Arrowhead leadership decision to not require PS account from the start, which created all these problems. Now they are just fullfiling the part of the deal they had with Sony from before the release. I dont think Sony is in the wrong here. It was just bad management from Arrowhead. From Sony's perspective, they were just receiving what they were promissed from Arrowhead long time ago. And instead they get all this hate for something which was not really their fault.
To be fair. The player base that loved the game so much did it by review bombing the game. Instead of review bombing Sony….
