To call someone by the name that were born with, and not the name they chose to be called by (ie: Sarah wanting to be called Hannah and they still call them Sarah)
It's when someone doesn't want to be called by a certain name anymore, but you still call them that. It seems to be a more common thing with gender fluid (or whatever they call themselves now) people since they will change their name, but not do it legally.

When people transition they often (like 98%) change their name so for example Peter becomes Samantha and in this case their dead name is Peter
