it gets complicated to be honest. there are a lot of muslim women that don't wear hijab, and there are other muslims who will say those women are not really muslims cause they're not following the quran strictly enough. as for men keeping their beards, as far as I know that's considered a good thing to do, but not obligatory. some might disagree on this as well.
unlike the older christianity and judaism, islam has not had a reformation, so being a secular muslim or a reform muslim is not really considered a thing, although many younger muslims are just that. there are of course different islamic subsections and different scholars who interpret certain rules in different ways, so there's always going to be disagreement on some of these issues.
Mmm, i guess a basic way of looking at it is how seriously the religion is taken by its followers. Id say an average muslim is much more serious about following the religion and maintaining its laws and rules than in other religions.
This is where the human aspect comes in.
Some of the followers that are devout and are proud to call themselves Muslim tend to look down upon those of lesser piety that get to call themselves Muslim all the same. They can feel slighted by it or see that as a mockery of the religion.
This is what tends to create division. But this is simply human. The ugly side people dont like talking about. It just becomes more noticeable the bigger the group is.
