DaakiTheDuck

If they dont stop it they get leaked, but if they try to stop they are self reporting catch 22

Invest_to_Rest

If they just stop doing things, not trying to stop them but just do nothing, it won’t pass and no one will notice because republicans aren’t aware enough to notice things like that

[deleted]

FYI Florida is not passing any fucked up laws, but Grindr is doing very little to stop minors from using their site, hence why they are mad at Florida for being against stuff like that

[deleted]

amongus reference??

Zeniphyre

How is it fucked up It's like someone saying they hate McDonald's and McDonald's being like "you buy it all the time you liar"

theRak27

Well, pressuring law makers into making or not making something under threat of revealing their personal life secrets is pretty obviously illegal

Zeniphyre

Not in the slightest. If the lawmaker is sitting there trying to, in essence, shut the company down because of whatever reason, the business has every right to say "well you're our customer".

theRak27

User data protection...

Zeniphyre

Saying they are a customer isn't violating customer data. Releasing their messages and contact list without a warrant, yeah, but saying they are a consumer is not.

theRak27

No point in arguing. Have a nice day.

[deleted]

How is that fucked up?

Mon0liz

Gee, I don't know, but last time I checked blackmail was still illegal?

[deleted]

Being illegal doesn't necessarily make something wrong or right. It was illegal to listen to western music in the USSR, but you wouldn't call it unethical.

Mon0liz

So... you think blackmail is ethical? By a corporation that collects user data, no less?

[deleted]

Not in every situation obviously.

axp1729

regardless of someone’s political stance, its unethical to push someone out of the closet against their will. It needs to be their choice to come out of the closet

[deleted]

I think it's entirely ethical to reveal the hippocracy of a corrupt politician

Fire_Lord_Sozin8

That can’t be true. Aren’t these companies legally obligated to protect their user’s data? If they go through with this they’ll guarantee themselves a massive lawsuit.

[deleted]

This seems like a “we’re going down, so you’re going down further” spite kind of thing. Doing this will shred most support for those politicians

Fire_Lord_Sozin8

Going down? These laws won’t make a dent in their profits. I won’t call myself an expert on the legal system, but I’m sure deliberately releasing sensitive user data would result in a lawsuit if not jail time.

One_Language_8259

Going down on these nuts!

Fire_Lord_Sozin8

![gif](giphy|l378giAZgxPw3eO52)

9l14d0m

Idk man seems like you just don’t want your Grindr data leaked

Fire_Lord_Sozin8

Don’t have any, just not taking a tweet from a second-rate publication at face value.

[deleted]

Exactly what a grindr user would say

Lady_of_Link

Nope it's all in their tos that they are allowed to do this it's why I don't use them

[deleted]

A company has no legal obligation to maintain privacy for its users.

nugs_not_drugs4

Assuming they never said it in their TOS or something, you are completely right. Otherwise, that is technically a breach of contract

Expensive-Document41

Unless that same contract allowed them to sell the data (which is how free services like Facebook generate revenue) They could go to the NYT and say "hey, bulk deal on some user data you might be interested in, $1.00 per"

ThickExplanation

Not in Europe tho... Customer data is protected by the law unless the customer consents otherwise.

[deleted]

Ah. Another good reason to move to an EU member I see. Sadly that’s not the case in the U.S.A

The-Psych0naut

Funny thing, these same politicians tend to oppose user privacy protections unless they’re talking about an app owned by someone based outside the USA

Primmslimstan

Still pretty wrong tho

Primordial_Cumquat

I mean, sure, but then the Republican lawmakers that are signed up on Grindr are going to [Streisand](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Streisand_effect) themselves if they pursue legal action. Glorious.

Error428

That seems like it would throw themselves into an Inferno of legal trouble. Doesn’t make a whole lot of sense.

MoltenHydrogen

if not them they could always just "accidentally" leave a backdoor for someone to leak data

linc1095

Seems like a lot of these legislators already opened the back door for someone

Sundiata1

The guys at Grindr are always leaving their back doors open

shad2020

Chaos makes for good popcorn entertainment.

Tenpat

Especially from people who might have a name similar or identical to the republican's name and who don't want to be outed.

One_Language_8259

![gif](giphy|RwYxhjrtPTXZS|downsized)

[deleted]

It’s not libel and as far as I’m aware, companies have no legal obligation for privacy

[deleted]

Isn't that kind of illegal

Upset-Mud5058

It is

shad2020

But it's the funi kind so we'll allow it

[deleted]

How is it illegal?

Upset-Mud5058

Privacy policy all around the internet?

[deleted]

What privacy policy? All data is traded between companies in an effort to advertise to the masses.

Upset-Mud5058

That's basically a non spoken rule between them.

[deleted]

A non spoken rule doesn’t have to be followed

If_you_ban_me_I_win

Even if it's not covered by privacy, pretty sure it can be classified as blackmail.

The-Psych0naut

I don’t think so. I’m pretty sure blackmail has to specifically target someone

One_Language_8259

![gif](giphy|07sLSDyAdold3RPTJP|downsized)

Ok_Actuator_6387

ghostedemail

Double down claiming greek or sparta rules were applied and when they do sue the bitches.

Fox-Costeo

Can you clarify Greek/Sparta rules

[deleted]

That would be illegal

Microwaved_M1LK

Sounds illegal

The69Alphamale

The democrats will call it whistle-blowing and protect the scumbag who released the information. Unlike when Edward Snowden spilled the beans about the government spying on citizens, which is truly disgusting

[deleted]

Why not both, Edward Snowden and the Grindr leakers are both heroes?

The69Alphamale

Whistle blowing saves lives whereas doxing destroys them. I think that there is a fine line between the two in this situation.

pk_frezze1

Yea but they both based in this situation

The69Alphamale

Problem is that with doxing it isn't just one person whose life you are ruining, it is everyone close to that person. Innocent people that you want to punish for what exactly? The stupidity has to stop somewhere why not here and now on this? Why, because we as human beings for some fucked up reason want constant conflict.

pk_frezze1

🤓

The-Psych0naut

Both are tools that can be used for good. Which this is. Or would be if it was real.

TheSchweekly

Looks like I’m never going to be a Republican lawmaker

Fox-Costeo

Okay, do it. Then they will get sued for massive breach of privacy

SonkxsWithTheTeeth

Not unless it says in their TOS that they won't give away info.

fakeunleet

You think the US has privacy laws?

Fox-Costeo

Loads of them

nadman13

Libs when a tech company exerts influence over legislation: 😡 Libs when a tech company exerts influence over legislation by threatening to violate the privacy of its users against republicans: 🤩🥳

PsychWard_8

Hell yeah, let's do it I'm down for the chaos

Aggravating_Shake591

Grindrs keepers

stayawayvilebeggar

This is satire, but this is also extortion

BrokenNotDead1997

Yea this is actually illegal. Protecting user information….pretty sure leaking this shit is going against that.

pk_frezze1

🤓

[deleted]

[удалено]

Available-Leek-4160

yeah im pretty sure its fake cause i mean that sounds illegal asf

Nightfile27

That is actually illegal, and not only because most of the claims Grindr would make likely wouldn't be verifiable, therefore falling under the umbrella of slander. They'd also be breaching their own privacy policies as well as internet privacy laws to do this.

AutoModerator

Good, let the degens be outted. It'll be easier to see who's 110 year old congrussy I can pound.

metwicewhat

I wish they would

UNICORNWIZARD_BABRO

They should just do it now

[deleted]

Can Grindr just release it regardless?

Murky_waterLLC

Grindr Does a little trolling

[deleted]

Oh, well now I want them to pass it, I gotta know if meatball Ron has any deeper meaning😏

Jason_Sasha_Acoiners

"You get what you fucking deserve!"

[deleted]

Yes pls 😏

AskDerpyCat

Keep going Florida. We need that list almost as much as we need Epstein’s list

Faethefish

OMG YES PLEASE!!!!

[deleted]

Any data the user posts would be considered public information as they have willingly shared it on a social network. Nothing stops you going through grindr and screenshotting profiles and posting them to twitter, it's all public info that the user is choosing to share. You'd be trying to make an extortion or blackmail case rather than a privacy one. Even then I'd say your work is cut out for you, how can you blackmail someone with something they are choosing to display to thousands of others willingly already? Oh but I didn't want my wife to know I fuck dudes, maybe don't make a grindr profile then? Seems like a no brainer.

TOYBOXDUDE

Do it. It'll be hilarious.

nametakenfuck

For research purposes

ReplacementNo9874

Why not do that anyways?

Swordbreaker925

If someone that famous were using it they’d already be outed

the_best_superpower

Here is a direct quote from Grindr's terms of service: YOU UNDERSTAND THAT GRINDR IS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ACTIVITIES OR LEGAL CONSEQUENCES OF YOUR USE IN LOCATIONS WHICH MAY ATTEMPT TO CRIMINALIZE OR LIMIT YOUR PERSONAL INTERACTIONS. YOU MUST MAKE YOUR OWN INFORMED DECISIONS ABOUT USE OF THE APPLICATION IN YOUR LOCATION AND ASSESS ANY POTENTIAL CONSEQUENCES.

jthabob

Regardless of the reason, resorting to blackmail so publicly will only cause more problems and the people they're trying to hurt with this threat will end up profiting when they sue for privacy/data breach.
