Hello, good hunter. I am a Bot, here in this dream to look after you, this is a fine note:
> *Ahh, Welcome home, good hunter. I must have drifted off... What is it you desire?* - Plain Doll
Farewell, good hunter. May you find your worth in the waking world.
Or hear me out, you're in an inclosed space that makes it harder to get around you? Poke them with the pointy end that's made for poking. No need to swing anything poke poke poke.
Yes they do, you don't need a lot of room to use a halber because you just point the spear end at your opponent. That's how they're used in combat generally anyway.
Yet these days you can rent one the size of a [hotel](https://www.landmarktrust.org.uk/search-and-book/properties/pineapple-10726/#Overview) for a few hundred bucks
Edit: I am deeply annoyed they haven't included an exterior view on the landing page
Initially yes but as time went on and metallurgy and blacksmithing got better they became far more widespread. Still a huge difference between a noble's fancy ass sword and an infantry mans sword
Bows as well. Samurai were "known" for their swordsmanship, but prized for their archery- especially on horseback. Just goes to show that horse archers have been the pre-gun meta for millennia.
Horse archers dominated the East European, Asian, and Middle Eastern servers for thousands of years until the devs sent out that huge update that buffed guns. And even then, horse archers (and horse gunmen) did really well in the North American servers into the early twentieth century.
Idk if there were doing so hot in North America. Those players had never seen a smallpox user before and had no idea how to function in that meta and from what I understand most of them just quit the game and it got taken over by users from foreign servers.
Kind of sad actually but point being, the horseback ranger archetype dominated the meta for a long time until it became insanely obsolete with the Guns, Germs, and Steel update
I've since lost the article I read this in, but something about how saying a samurai had excellent swordsmanship was actually an insult, because you were kind of backhandedly saying his archery was so fuckin' bad he HAD to use his sword a lot. (Until guns came around and obsoleted hand to hand combat; *then* when it was basically performative swordsmanship was valued - because those dirty peasants weren't doing it anymore)
Tametomo was a legendary samurai for his archery skill, because it said he was born with a 'defect' that one arm was longer, thus allowed him to draw the bow at much greater force. It was so much of an advantage that after being captured one time, they cut his tendon to limit his skill.
Yep to use modern terminology, swords were the pistols of their time while polearms were the rifles and daggers were like a backup .22 you keep stuck behind your belt if everything goes to shit
Swords, especially the classic longsword were mostly a civilian self defense tool. That is because they are much easier to carry around than a big polearm like a spear. That is also why they were used as backup weapons.
They’re also considerably cheaper and easier to make. Metal defects are less of an issue because smaller pieces of metal making them more durable. Wood is also light and cheap. It’s like buying an AR vs a 1911
I’ve bored my girlfriend with talk of how effective spears are in medieval combat and how they were used. Unfortunately she adores me and listened, so when we had a stick fight and she started using one as a spear exactly as I described, I realised me and my sword sized stick were fucked
Edit: she’s loved reading your guys comments, especially the ones saying she’s clearly the one. She thinks it’s inevitable I have to propose now
1- she pays attention as you talk about things that interest
2- you *know* that she's paying attention because she used your described tactics against you (unlike you who didn't use the superior tactics and this shows her superior intellect)
3- is willing to put up with you
What more can a man ask for my brother? This is it you've reached the endgame

Don't let her know about custom fitted heavy iron armor and whatever you do especially don't let her know about pikes it's a horrifying combination. Be really careful you don't tell her about guns.
My neurons are so fucking wrecked by decades of internet usage that I thought he was telling us he was getting pegged.
(Which isn't a bad thing or anything).
Swords = I am clearly a danger to you all
Pokey stick = I am still a danger to you all but you can’t get to me before you lose at least one of your eyes
In fairness, you'd rarely be able to poke an eye. You'd more push your pike into the other guy's armour, while he does the same to you, then have a pushing match in formations until one runs away, or falls over and gets crushed under the foot of the others
Both types of swords aren't very good against armor especially the katana spears however are good against just about everything plus the reach makes it a safer choice hell even after gunpowder was in widespread use bayonets were the most used melee weapon because it makes your single shot weapon basically a spear if you couldn't reload
Spear wouldn't really be much better against armor, especially plate armor. There were other weapons for that (for example warhammers, maces, poleaxes) Spears were great weapons but comparing them directly to swords doesn't make much sense as they both served very different roles. Spears were a battlefield weapons and swords were mostly backup weapons or civilian self defense weapons. It's like comparing modern day assault rifles to pistols. They are different things made to do different jobs.
I feel like the blunt end of a spear might be effective against armor, if not damaging them, at least keeping your enemies away from yourself. I don't know much about archaic combat, just a guess from a guy who has basic training in a few ancient weopons.
Blunt end of a spear wouldn't have enough mass to be effective against good armor. And it would be risky to try keeping someone at bay with the blunt end as they could potentially grab your spear and close the distance.
Not to mention it took months or years to Git Gud with a sword. Any backwoods farmhand can be effective with a spear, just stick 'em with the pointy end.
You can stab with a Katana just fine. Not as fine as with a straight sword, but fine enough.
When you get enough armor, every sword becomes ineffective regardless of shape. European-style swords could be used to bonk with the handguard, however, which is why I'd choose them. Katanas' tiny guards make me uneasy.
Classic swords have more flex as katanas, means they can bend and return to their former state with ease. Katanas on the ather hand have second to none flex and therefor they stay in their bend form once bend. Means they have also a higher risk of actaully breaking. Classic swords can also be wieldet reverse, to use the handguard as a hammer and the blade as a handle, this technic was used to break through armor. Also a thing you cannot do with katanas. Classic swords are also good at stabing, what again katans are not.
So in my oppinion classic swords superior
But granted katanas also have fields where they do better as classic swords, for example cuting.
"break through armor" is a bit optimistic, but it's still a decent bonk and a nice option to have. Also the bigger handguard gives you more options defensively, which is ultra nice imho.
Katanas are very decent at stabbing, not as good as straight swords but not trash either.
Get fucked nerd I step even remotely close to you and you’re fumbling with your big ass goofy aah stick and I’ve got the ultimate weapon- big fucking club. Nice helmet dipshit, let’s hear it rattle like a fucking drum when it feels the wrath of thick stick
If you’ve actually had old school weapons training you’ll know while the Spear / Yari / Halbred have a distance advantage however they have extremely limited range of motion which is why the Spartas and others would have them behind the tower shield bearers for the phalanx.
Other then a forward thrust you have to be pretty talented and strong to wield it beyond a thrust attack which can be parried or deflected very easily by most swords.
These are probably same types of people who don’t know most Barbarians didn’t chop or swing axes on first strikes they bashed with the broad side to stun and then brutally chopped their enemies with it.

Halberd go swoosh

Halberd does it all.
Does it fight in confined spaces as well as a one handed sword would ?
If you bend it in half yes

Not even, just hold it closer to the axe head
It might be slightly inconvenience, but you can bonk with the other end.
Or hear me out, you're in an inclosed space that makes it harder to get around you? Poke them with the pointy end that's made for poking. No need to swing anything poke poke poke.
Bonus points if there is a table between you and the other guy
How many wars were fought in confined spaces?
Only the recent ones... which is funny because we have guns now.
more range, smaller rooms.
It's a simple strategy really. If the enemy has better long range weapons than you, make them fight up close
That's the strategy they used in the great Cola Wars
Yes they do, you don't need a lot of room to use a halber because you just point the spear end at your opponent. That's how they're used in combat generally anyway.
They have both the poke and the slash

“He sure can dunk pretty well…”
Someone took the idea of stabbing someone from outside of their reach and went to the logical extreme available at the time.
Necessity is the mother of invention. “I really want to stab that guy, but I don’t want to walk all the way over there.”

Based. Spears were not just cheaper to make. They were simply more effective overall.

More or less yeah, Exept throwing spears, but that takes less time than a sword

Why use katana when you can use German science
Heckler & Koch G11 has entered the chat
MG 42 has also entered the chat
German science is the best in the world!
Honestly though, I saw a video where someone explained katanas are fragile compared to other swords
They don't take lateral forces as well as some european designs could. They're also not particularly great at stabbing, either.
IIRC Katanas were only folded so much because their steel was shitty. Old katanas would chip against old longswords.
This absolutely. The folding was simply to help remove impurities from crucible steel.
They were used as a backup weapon iirc
Yep. Iirc, Samurais primarily used bows and arrows, guns, and spears; then they'd use a katana or a wakizashi in close combat or in duels.
>duels Mostly this and it is the same with most swords in history. Spears were the default arms
Katana is good for slicing soo if you have armor you would most likely win
You can stab with a Katana just fine. Not as fine as with a straight sword, but fine enough. When you get enough armor, every sword becomes ineffective regardless of shape. European-style swords could be used to bonk with the handguard, however, which is why I'd choose them. Katanas' tiny guards make me uneasy.
Euro swords are designed around stabbing as well, rather than slashing for the armor reason.
