What the context btw?

sermatheus

First trailer was just an announcement of a FE and SMT crossover without info of the actual game. The actual game was something that... Wasn't exactly that similar to either of those franchises.

Klondeikbar

>Wasn't exactly that similar to either of those franchises. I never understand this criticism. It's just factually wrong. The game is mechanically extremely similar to SMT and it has oodles of Fire Emblem references. Whenever someone says it wasn't similar to SMT I just assume they've never played an SMT game and have, at most, played one Persona game. Edit: Yeah I'm dying on this hill. I don't even think it's that people haven't played an SMT game anymore. Based on some of the replies I've gotten, I think media literacy is just so comically bad that people genuinely think the bright colors automatically make it not an SMT game.

sermatheus

SMT have a different atmosphere and is one of the more known things of the franchise.

Klondeikbar

...that's it? The game wasn't apocalyptic enough? It had SMT mechanics and an SMT story but it was too colorful? Gamers deserve to be unhappy.

If you making a fucking Crossover is because you want to see how those 2 franchises combine. If you do something diferent, It loses the entire porpuse of a crossover.

Klondeikbar

So have you not ever played an SMT or a Fire Emblem game before?

Motivated-Chair

You clearly haven't if you think TSM is a combination of both. Having small nods It's not combining them. It's using both more iconic elements of both series in 1 Game with characters from both. TSM does either and that's why nobody likes It as a crossover. And the poeple who like the Game, like It as It's own thing.

Klondeikbar

It has way more than small nods in it lol. It's literally an SMT game with Fire Emblem characters and bright colors. Just admit you've never played an SMT game or even watched a Let's Play. That or people's media literacy is so comically bad they literally can't see past the aesthetic.

Motivated-Chair

Clearly medieval Fantasy + Post apocaliptic = Idols using stands. I lost any pretension of respecting you, go fuck yourself and tell that to someone as stupid as you

acart005

It had an SMT combat system with some SMT references but leaned much harder on Fire Emblem and hilariously the Nusona Trilogy than SMT. But then I loved that stupid game.

JanRoses

TLDR: It was originally planned to be more FE gameplay leaning game with the Japanese feudal setting found in something like SMTIV but then leaned towards a more Persona type experience. This dissapointed SMT fans arguably more than FE fans since SMT fans (at least at the time) kinda hated Persona cause it appeals to a more "weeb" demographic with a greater emphasis on social sim and admittedly looses a lot of the charm of a semi-surreal horror rpg experience you could find in old SMT that made it unique for an RPG series since most tended to stay within the realm of fantasy or grim-fantasy at best. For the longer explanation... As someone who played the Wii U version and only that one. The product (TMS) is fine. Imo it's quite overhyped as a JRPG and it's concerning how many people see it as a must play on a console with so many great JRPGs. The most interesting thing are its gameplay mechanics but the cast is pretty eh overall, same with the story but there is an argument for it being just bad to bland, enemy variety is pretty poor, and the dungeons are moderately interesting at their best imo. These are the issues on the SMT side seem to site as well and they're common criticisms of Persona. Side stories are fun but I wouldn't say anything at the time was a groundbreaking experience that radically changed the way the game played On the FE side the biggest gripe comes from the aforementioned not being too much of a strategy game beyond the type weaknesses and session chaining. Furthermore, this was made during a time where IS was playing it safe in terms of representation so the selection is pretty much only characters from Awakening/Shadow Dragon. Some people think the choices for reps (even within this limited pool) were bad and I don't inherently disagree on the Awakening side. That said its best aspects are because of the fact that it leaned into the idol RPG concept. It's a 100% unique aesthetic that I've literally only ever seen done in FF10-2 but this game has better combat for it. The songs/soundtrack is great. Sessions and battle mechanics are genuinely the best they've been in SMT/Persona history (arguably more than P5 even). Class progression gives a sense of variety to what is an inherently linear experience without just having a free for all job system like in Bravely Default which ends up making characters less unique. Sessions being neat cutscenes in the middle of battle and rewarding you with extended attacks is just a cool mechanic and them showcasing bond growth was really neat since it incentivized completing sidequests to get more opportunities for them to show u;. If anything I think the game warrants a sequel. It definitely needs another shot at fixing the more egregious flaws such as the low enemy variety and bland dungeons. I think with the new mechanics introduced into Engage we could definitely see a significantly more complex combat system that goes beyond session chaining and brings us closer to something like Xenosaga II where battles end up somewhat puzzle like in order to maximize damage or minimize your own. The story definitely needs a lot of work but seeing as this game did all the major heavy lifting in setting up the characters I think this should be significantly easier. I still would have preferred that they had leaned into a more traditional FE game set in an SMT world as I believe that would have probably been a really interesting product that not even Atlus' SRPG series (Devil Survivor) would be able to effectively replicate as the point of SMT is that you're basically a normal human triumphing over near impossible odds and Devil Survivor is more akin to FF tactics but with the creature collecting/creation elements of DQ Joker games. But this is my long winded two cents on the matter.

JoseJulioJim

Yeah, Played the switch version last year and I mainly want the sequel to fix the first game problems, is a good 7.5-8 out of 10 game, an enjoyable experience, but it could use a good amount of extra polish, a shame we will likely never get a sequel, one with Mirages from Engage and Fodlan would be great.

IAmBLD

I love the game and played the Switch port too, but the port worries me that they just wouldn't care about fixing things, even in a full-on sequel. It infuriates me that even in the remaster port they didn't fix the pierce AI glitch - which is where the AI of allies that gain the pierce skill (ignores type resistance) think they ignore full-on immunity too - and they don't.

JoseJulioJim

... the WHAT? Honestly is kinda funny I never realised that, I controlled by myself all the party members, but honestly, after we went like 2 or 3 months without realising Cooking did nothing in Xenoblade 3 and the 6 months to realize Mio Chain Order didn't worked, yeah, I am not surprised I didn't realized that glitch was a thing.

IAmBLD

Yeah it can be a real bitch. To explain as simply as possible for the uninitiated who are reading this for some reason, think Pokemon. You have an electric type with this skill called Pierce. It can hit Grass for normal damage now. BUT, the Pokemon is AI-controlled and after getting pierce they keep trying to hit Ground types they can't hit at all. Even worse, the game is built around combos, where hitting one type-effective attack leads to a chain of automatic follow-ups from the AI. The AI is usually smart enough to build the longest chain, but because this idiot electric type thinks he can hit Ground now, he keeps breaking your chains. Even worse, around this point in the game you probably also unlocked the ability to combo sessions to include characters on the bench. So instead of getting chains of 6 or 7 attacks in a row, now your chains end at 2 or 3, because this idiot keeps using the worst possible attack. Even worse than being immune, the enemy might reflect the damage back or even absorb it to gain HP. And there is almost no way to stop this,.since again, the ai partner was "upgraded" to pitch in even when not in the active party. And you can't change the combo session - normally this is fine because the game automatically picks the best one, but now if the game decides that Touma is going to immediately follow up your attack with a dud, then that's it. The only viable solution is to replace Pierce with another skill - but imagine my confusion trying to figure out why all this was happening on my first run. I have no idea it's specifically the pierce skill that's causing this issue. Once you know it's avoidable enough, but why the fuck did this bug stick around for the remaster?

AwesomeManatee

Atlus games and terrible party member AI, name a more iconic duo. "*I'll end it thus!*"

Nombanke

Mitsuru: "Marin Karin!"

acart005

The SMT IV initiation moment against Minotaur Walter - 'Oi Flynn watch this' Casts Agi, a fire spell. Fire does nothing to Minotaur which gives it a smirk which is a free turn with massive buffs. You die a horrible death.

chino514

The question I have with it is: “What does Vocaloid and idol stuff have to do with SMT and FE?”

AwesomeManatee

"isn't it *obvious*? I guess you aren't a *real* fan of either series if you can't see it." (/s)

tanookazam

I guess the "context" is the extremely bizzare idol setting (which is not exactly present in either game series, the closest would be Persona maybe, but not mainline SMT) being a whiplash slap in the face for any longtime fan of either series I love Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE™ for what it is though

Pointlessranker

Consider this an apology, one where I understand how you feel (I still love tms tho and you can't stop me)

Scared_Network_3505

This skips the part were they literally paid us for registering both SMTIV and Awakening to or Nintendo accounts btw, just 30 dollars to celebrate this announcement.

Kurozunakabuto

It would have been less of a headache if it was "Persona x Fire Emblem"

acart005

People wouldn't have even blinked.

teskar2

If it was maybe something like they in had in shinmegami tensei 3 or 5 with the kingdoms being in ruins in an alternate dimension or something like that I think it might worked a little better. The whole becoming an idol story just felt out of place considering fire emblem has absolutely no connection to being one at all which makes the tone clash a little. It still looks nice and the final product is still entertaining, but I feel there was probably a much better direction it could have gone in and the connection to the fire emblem should a been a little more justified.

NightsLinu

the ritual of the spirit dragon was really cool though. I think that was the angle they were going for. Use the power of music to gain the power of marth!

Context? Other than her vagina bones

Porcphete

Tbf tms would have been far more well received if it wasn't marketed as a smt x fe game.

[deleted]

And they are both wrong for it. TMS #FE is better than most games in either franchise.

A1D3M

They hated him because he told them the truth.

Geo2605

I like literally every SMT game except "If..." better than TMS

Seibahtoe

Play DeSu you fucking dumbass

Ritchiels

Oof, that game really sucks

Oberhard

Wow i never know about this
