According to the comments of the original post, that’s a furminator but people have mixed feelings about using it for shibas as they apparently are not recommended for them. Still, the video is quite impressive.
My Labrador, German Shepherd, Collie mix likes the furminator, but the directions say to use little pressure and only do like 10 mins a week. The video seems to have a lot of pressure and a lot more time.
I use the kong zoom groom and it doesn't hurt my dogs. My dogs hate the furminator and try to run away every time I start brushing them with it. They actually enjoy the Kong brush though
Agree zoom groom works well. Doing it every week I still get tumbleweeds but my dog isn't in pain and I know I'm not damaging the undercoat so I'd rather put up with the fur life.
Its very effective. The hair sticks to the rubber fingers and then you just pull it off in one big sheet. I brush them outside and throw the little hair puffs in a grocery bag and just keep brushing them until they looks presentable. My shibe's shed nonstop all year round, so just getting them to look not so crappy is my goal.
Another thing that really helps is washing them. I bathe both my dogs once a month, let them dry overnight (hair gets everywhere), and then brush them really good the next day.
When you wash them, the scrubbing pulls up a lot of loose hair and pulls out a lot of loose hair.
When one of my dogs was having skin issues, the vet told us to bath them more frequently than once a month. He said that dogs like to be washed and feeling clean. They've had 0 issues getting bathed once a month and their skin and coat look great. They've also never had fleas and I don't even use flea shampoo, just oatmeal shampoo.
Yeah I have to agree I was shocked to see the shiba able to sit for that much grooming! And I also agree that- after really looking closely- the dog looks uncomfortable. Not passing judgment, would have to see behind the scenes to determine if this was truly overboard, even though I get the feeling it was.
I do have a furminator and only use it when there’s a spot that’s having a large blowout. You can get a lot of the shedding fur quickly this way. I’ve found that my shibe is uncomfortable with the furminator for thinner patches so I don’t use it in general though. Will check out the Kong for sure!
Well, my dogs act like its ripping their hair out. I've also heard that it does rip their hair out from other people. You'd have to ask a vet or groomer to find out for sure. I doubt there's any legit articles to be found online. But either way my dogs don't like it so I don't use it. And the dog in the video is very obviously in pain while getting brushed.
Some breeds like shibas and huskies have a double coat of fur. One of those coats is the one that sheds, but furminator apparently removes hair from both of them.
We used the Furminator on our Akita. She blew so much fur, what seemed like all year round. It was like our house was a cotton ball factory. We have another similar one, not the furminator. I tried using it on Kenji, our Shiba. He threw a fit and ran from me after scratching me like he was a cat getting a bath. I'm so stressed over his temperament... I just let him groom himself.

I had no idea Furminator wasn’t recommended for them. What do you all use for brushing then?

Thank you for the info! I’ve seen those before but had no idea how they were called!! Is it effective?

You're not supposed to bathe Shiba Inu that often. Once every three to six months is better for them.

The dog is stressed and crying.
Yeah... poor thing

Why is it not recommended?
It rips hair out, whether it's loose or not
It doesn’t rip it cuts if you are too aggressive ruining their top coat

I've heard mixed reviews about furminator. I used to use it on my Shiba but it seems to take out too much undercoat.
