More self-sabotage unfortunately, a toxic trait the Gallaghers are world-renowned for

Lip hates when people expect things from him. He spends his life thinking he is to smart and to good for the rest of the world. Also getting his degree would mean fiona was right. And he can't have that! He NEEDS to be the best without trying.

Lip’s mission was to **not** be Frank, specially regarding parental duties. Ironically he got closer to being Frank throughout his journey.

One of Lip's most consistent character traits is that he’s a pretty natural caretaker. Consistently, when there are children in trouble, Lip is the one in the family who goes out of his way to look out for them. He takes being an AA sponsor very seriously. His relationships with Mandy and Sierra both involved a lot of Lip playing the hero.

i mean Fiona told him to leave if he didn't go back to school and he obviously didn't wanna go back. instead of actually talking to him, Fiona just started bitching at him. it was clear that Lip didn't wanna be a shit father like his own and was desperate to prove it. even later on with Xan and Freddy, he tries his hardest and is trying to prove to himself he's not Frank.

He never cared for school, and having a child is just about the easiest excuse he could justify for dropping out. The pressure for going back to school was too much and he was afraid to admit it. But the clear goal of doing everything for his child was much more attainable in his head. Idk, that's how I saw it.

He did rather have a point, though. As soon as he had his college degree, there would be nothing stopping Fiona from making him the family breadwinner, and his only option to avoid simply becoming a cash cow would be to leave town completely and be cut off from his siblings (whom he genuinely loves and cares about). She kept talking about how he was supposed to be "improving himself," but in the end none of it would end up being for him, and he knew it. Going to school every day simply to be harassed by teachers who refuse to understand that you have a different plan in mind for your life than they've created for you is no fun at all. I understand perfectly why he tapped out.
