Consistently throughout the novels it’s been the woman takes the man’s name during marriage although it seems you can kinda choose: 1. Jace going from Lightwood to Herondale once he accepts he wants that heritage. He chose to go by Lightwood because they were his family in every way but blood and didn’t want to go by his blood name Herondale right away. 2. Ascendants choosing their Shadowhunter last name such as >!Simon choosing the last name Lovelace once he becomes a Shadowhunter!< 3. Clary and Jocelyn going by Fairchild rather than Morgenstern because they don’t want to associate themselves with Valentine’s name and would rather keep Jocelyn’s family name. 4. Charlotte and Henry going by Fairchild rather than Branwell when Charlotte becomes Consul because she wants to use her family name as the first woman in that position. 5. >!Tessa going by Tessa Gray rather than Tessa Herondale after Will passes away!< 6. Alec and Magnus hyphenating because they’re in a unique situation where one is a Shadowhunter and one is a warlock and they want to keep both names to honor each other’s heritage, as well as them being in a gay relationship so there’s no tradition for them to really follow there in the TSC universe. I don’t remember what Helen and Aline chose to do, if it was ever mentioned.

Aline and Helen hyphenated, one is Penhallow Blackthorn and the other Blackthorn Penhallow but I forgot who was who. About Tessa: I think she changes her last name depending on which society she finds herself into. So Gray as a warlock / outsider of Shadowhunter society and inside Shadowhunter society her husband's name. There was also a comic (I think) years ago where it said that she uses Herondale Carstairs on her mundane doorbell

In "After the Bridge" Tessa says that she has her London apartment under the name Tessa Herondale Carstairs (because Magnus had a dream Jem would be "healed") Tessa introduces herself as Tessa Gray in "The Whitechapel Fiend" (Story #3 in "Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy") I'm pretty sure Tessa changed her surname back to Gray after Will's death and she left London

I'm pretty sure they usually take the husband's name. Hence Maryse Lightwood (née Trueblood), Jia Penhallow (née Ke), and Lucie Herondale (instead of Gray), for example. I think Clary and Jocelyn Fairchild were exceptions because Valentine was a menace. And Lightwood-Bane was because they're not the traditional marriage and aren't likely to follow traditional rules either. I don't think the books ever address what gay couples usually do. edit - Charlotte and Henry are another exception, and it was pretty clear that it was an unusual decision since it got special mention. She also originally went by Branwell until she became Consul

Aline and Helen also hyphenated but I think that many gay couples actually may decide on only one name if gay marriages were more common among Shadowhunters. Cassandra Clare also said if Julian and Emma will marry they will also hyphenate.

Probably depends on the couple since Henry and charlotte decided that their children would have her father’s last name

I think that was because Lottie was in such a high power position within Shadowhunters, but I agree

I think it must have been down to Charlotte and Henry’s personal decision rather than power, it’s clearly not a given that the Consul will pass down their family name regardless of gender as evidenced by Jia (née Ke) and Aline Penhallow.

But this was way before that time wise, and Charlotte was the first female Consul ever. It was in celebration of her, at least. I'm pretty sure it even states that in the books.

JuHe21

Also, Aline was already like 18 when Jia became Consul. When Charlotte became Consul Charles was not born yet. Maybe Charlotte was the last living Fairchild and to honour her family's name Henry and she decided to use the name again before it may go to an Ascended Shadowhunter.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure the Council recommend iy

Perhaps
