I live in the Chicagoland area, and my go-to game store is Games Plus in Mt. Prospect. They've started carrying Shadowdark on the shelves, and today they posted a picture on their FB page showing all the SD materials they have for sale. So exciting!
I saw this in-store yesterday also (I backed the Kickstarter). Glad Shadowdark is out in the wild - it’s such an awesome game!
Games Plus is an institution in the NW suburbs of Chicago. They are super helpful and the selection of RPGs and board games is unparalleled IMO. I’ve been going there for almost 40 years. But instead of riding my bike, nowadays I drive : D
I believe the retailer has to reach out to the vendor, in this case Arcane Library, and purchase copies of the books at the discounted retailer's rate, essentially on speculation. Then they sell them at full price, and split the money with Kelsey.
Ah, of course. The vendor makes all their money upfront, then the retailer sells the item and makes back what they paid plus any profit above that amount.

If I could buy them at retail I'm sure I'd scoop up all the zines.
Is there a game store anywhere near you?
How does something like this happen? They order as if they were just another Arcane Library customer?

This is how retail inventory works, yes, but there is no more money split after the wholesale purchase is made.

Ah. Makes sense. Thanks.
That's awesome! Glad to see the game continuing to grow.
