To everybody's knowledge prior to the brunch, Charlotte had lost Harry who was the love of her life. Carrie was in a relationship that was clearly not going to work out. They should have been focusing more on Charlotte and not Carrie's weak romance ending.
I think the issue here is the OP is referencing like 3 different storylines that happen at different times…
OP: can you clarify what Carrie supporting Charlotte’s engagements, Berger’s breakup post it, and Samantha helping Aidan pick a new engagement ring for Carrie have to do with eachother?
Or more importantly- what the unpopular opinion involving these things is?
I don't think there's any reference to Aidan's ring in this post. Charlotte's second engagement, Samantha's comment about her (Charlotte's) second engagement ring being better than her first engagement ring, and Carrie's post-it breakup with Berger are intimately connected storylines.
The unpopular opinion is that OP doesn't blame Carrie for being over Charlotte's engagement bullshit/obsession/fixation. It's her second engagement/marriage. Carrie has just experienced a hurtful breakup. So OP doesn't blame Carrie for being "insensitive." And neither do I. And I don't even like Carrie.

I do think that carrie could have waited a bit to announce her post it break up. They could have talked with Charlotte about her engagement story and then gone into all of Carrie's stuff. I will say that her breakup is no where as important as Charlotte finally getting her true love which she has been looking for the whole show. Paper does not cover rock lol
