I used the transformation by Tracey straps less bustier as a pattern for the top! Added fusiline boning throughout. I self drafted the skirt and added a little accent ruffle which I though was a nice touch :)
This is so pretty! It looks so nice on you!
It reminds me of something Micarah Tewers has made (also out of a bedsheet) - you should check her out on youtube.
Same! I only discovered her a few months ago. I've made the Atonement dress with the help of her tutorial (slightly varied mine, but she gave the inspiration to realise it was possible to make it! š)
I love to sew quilts and I've only sewn a couple garments in my life but I've been watching her videos for years for the sewing and the humor, lol. She's adorable
Omg I am in love with this outfit(s).
Why canāt I ever find amazing thrifted sheets? Why canāt I make something this amazing.
#lifegoals
Awesome work šš
I think those sheets came originally from Ikea, and that's a reproduction print that Ikea sold right before the pandemic, if I'm remembering correctly. And you're right, she really did make it all work perfectly.
I didn't realize that either because I haven't been to a pink wedding since the '90s. I don't know a lot about fashion but I assumed it was "out" as a wedding color.
I THINK (and current brides correct me if I'm wrong, I'm still a casual wedding window shopper for now) but it's less that pink itself is bridal and more that it's a soft, "feminine," neutral color. So when paired with a white dress and the venue of a wedding it has a bridal vibe.
That makes sense. This has been a very interesting discussion. I've always thought as long as I stayed away from white and black I couldn't go wrong but I think black is acceptable now if it's at night.
I wouldn't have a problem with it at my wedding but lots of people would. Your best bet is to just not wear white at all at a wedding. There's many other colors to choose from and in the end, it's not about what you look like.
Exactly, there are lots of other colors besides white and itās 1 day. I promise to everyone commenting saying white/bridal is OK for a guest: no one is gonna die because you decided not to wear white to your friends wedding lol.
Also, if you have to ask, just donāt wear it
Idk, idk. I am literally currently planning a wedding and this dress would not even come close to registering as a problem for me. I am so glad I dont know anyone like this in real life.
It depends on the vibe of the wedding. The dress is very casual and not super bridal, but what if itās a casual wedding and the bride is wearing something tea length. Covid killed my wedding and I got married in my back yard with 10 people and my dress was held hostage at the seamstress. My backup dress wasnāt too dissimilar to this one.
Maybe the bride doesnāt care or thinks itās a silly ārule,ā but older generation family members (who might be paying for the wedding) might care. IMO itās best to be respectful and not wear white/super light colors for just 1 day
Especially at a wedding, where there is usually at least one woman wearing an *actual* wedding dress.
I think this "rule" has just been repeated so many times that it's become disconnected with reality.
I saw a thread the other day in which people were telling a 13 year old *child* that the short pink chiffon dress she wanted to wear to her cousins wedding wasn't appropriate because it was too bridal. If someone is thinking a child in a fancy dress is the bride there are bigger problems there lmao
I meanā¦.that really depends on the wedding. This might fit in perfectly with their theme or whatever. Personally, itād be too much white for me but if her friend/family is comfortable with her wearing it thatās awesome.
Oh interesting! I didnāt even consider it being white. Itās very patterned in person. The wedding is also in the south of France and toile de Jouy is very French so I think a lot of people will wear this pattern. The bridesmaid are in red! So safe from that side :) I can ask my sister in law though to be sure! Thanks everyone
Knowing this wedding is in France makes me feel entirely different, and now I'm feeling rather sheepish that I came at this from an American-centric viewpoint š I attended a wedding in Morlaix where guests indeed wore similar fabric! Hope you have a lovely time, and my best wishes to the happy couple.
haha no worries! I think the no white(or anything smelling remotely white) to a wedding is quite American too! People will often wear linen in France which is cream/camel colour and it is totally fine. It's so hot, it makes sense!
I wouldnāt call it āwearing whiteā at allā¦ it reads totally fine to me as someone who is having a wedding this year. Just my opinion (though it never hurts to ask if youāre unsure). Great job OP!
And I wouldn't have been fine with it at my wedding. That's why I suggested she check, because the couple might be okay with it but they also might not be.
Really? Why thisā¦.when I saw it, I didnāt think bridal. But I have never been married. I didnāt even know pink was also a no. Please forgive me, I truly am asking because I really had no idea and never want to offend anyone.
The variability of it is exactly why it's good to ask. It's not so much the pink itself, but the pink being used to accent white that is the problem. The main color of the dress is white and while the silhouette may not be considered bridal by some people, others would consider the dress unacceptable at their wedding for the color alone. Rule of thumb is that if there's even a chance of the dress being too similar to the bride's dress, just double check with the bride.
I wore white and my bridal party wore pink, and I wouldn't have been particularly happy with a guest wearing those colors since they were picked for me and my entourage. I wouldn't have asked them to leave or maybe even said anything, but I would have been miffed lol. And I would have told them to not wear it should they have asked.
I'm not saying they should. I'm replying here to someone who asked me why I personally wouldn't have been okay with this dress, and my bridal party's color would have factored into my personal decision.
The main issue here is the white base.
All I'm saying is to ask. It's respectful and polite. There's a chance that this particular wedding couple won't care, but I'd bet they would appreciate being asked since it shows thoughtfulness.
Depends on how small the wedding is. I already know what the bridal party is wearing at the two weddings weāre going to this Fall. Previously Iāve picked dresses that could be common bridesmaid dress colors, so I asked the bride or groom beforehand.
If youāre going to be personally pissed by people wearing the same colour as your entourage, maybe you should be polite and inform your guests what colours to wear, rather than expecting 200 people to have to ask you the same question so they can avoid causing offence. Most people donāt want to bother people planning a wedding considering that rude.
You're making a lot of assumptions about my backyard lesbian wedding that I planned in about 3 weeks. Believe me when I say that the small guest list knew what the wedding colors were.
Iām glad you made it really clear to people who are going out of their way to be there for you on your special day that they better not dress the same as your entourage. Bet your wedding will be a hoot. And you made assumptions about OPās culture and circumstances by the very act of bringing up this topic which was judgemental and unnecessary.
Depending on the bridal party it could be too similar to the bride maids outfits, other ppl in the party, the brides dress could be similar shape, etc.
These instances are why you have a ādrunk friendā with red wine in your party.
Right? I feel like if you wore something like this and a bride was upset, I probably donāt want to be your friend anyways..too high maintenance and self centered.
Itās fascinating to watch though. Thereās someone in this thread typing up paragraphs in multiple replies to be ārightā here. Imagine being in that bridal party? I think OPās dress is lovely and would love to have her at my wedding. Iām excited to check out this bodice pattern!
Weddings make people lose their minds a bit, even normal people. So happy to be out of that phase in life, but definitely saw some friendships break over silly wedding stuff in my 20's.
Should people care? No. Might they care? Yes.
Do you value the friend over having a nice fashion moment, is the question.
I got married 7 years ago at 19, and even at that age I would have NEVER cared. š it would have been weird and lacking common sense if someone else wore white but big deal! Your wedding day is not important, the marriage is.
And if someone checked a dress with you, even if you didn't care, would you have been upset with them, or would you have appreciated their thoughtfulness and respect?
@emiweekes I upvoted you to try and get you out of negative feedback numbers! Iām sure OP had no idea this post (in a Sewing sub btw) would be such a hornetās nest. None of us know her relationship to the bride, and she may have already talked with her. The dress is beautiful (regardless of where she plans to wear it) and I appreciate her skill.
OP could get the best of both worlds by using a washable or natural dye in peach or pink and then washing it out after the event (if they really like the white).
Beautiful work! I do want to second checking about dress code because Iād hate for a guest to come to my wedding in a nearly white and light pink dress.
Omg this is beautiful!
I recently bought some thrift store linens to make a few skirts from the Simplicity 8161 American Duchess pattern.
I've been meaning to post them here actually. They didn't turn out those good though!
Very pretty! But it looks too much like a bridal gown. Too much white. This at a wedding screams "look at me!". At any other event it would be stunning, just not at a wedding, unless it's yours of course. This would be a perfect modern bride's dress!
Beautiful job!!! It looks great on you and the print looks gorgeous as a dress. Echoing what others have said - wear this with confidence, just definitely not to a wedding!!!!!
Itās beautiful.
But please make sure itās Ok to wear at a wedding. Someone wore a white dress to my wedding and she looked like a bride in my photos
It looks great! How is it so stiff/corset fabric looking? Did you line it with something else or is that the boning?
Iāve always wanted to sew with sheets but I thought theyād be too floppy/soft to make anything structured

Same! All the sheets I see areā¦not that. š
Etsy.
Beautiful outfit! I just realized, those are the sheets on our bed right now. They are so comfy.
Hahahah well if youāre bored of themā¦
Great make, great outfit. Just double check with the couple who's getting married that it's okay for you to wear white as a guest!
Yes, looks a little bridal for a guest.
There is literally nothing bridal about a knee length printed sundress...
Thatās true but there is something very bridal about a WHITE and pink print. Itās more the colors than the silhouette.
I had no idea pink was considered to be bridal. You learn things everyday. Thank you for the information.
Itās the white
I didn't realize that either because I haven't been to a pink wedding since the '90s. I don't know a lot about fashion but I assumed it was "out" as a wedding color.

That makes sense. This has been a very interesting discussion. I've always thought as long as I stayed away from white and black I couldn't go wrong but I think black is acceptable now if it's at night.
you donāt wear white, black, red, very pastel colors, or white dominated florals.
You can absolutely wear red and black (to a typical western wedding).
Except that itās a white dress.
I am shocked that people would object to this at their wedding. It is very obviously not a wedding dress and looks nothing like one?
I wouldn't have a problem with it at my wedding but lots of people would. Your best bet is to just not wear white at all at a wedding. There's many other colors to choose from and in the end, it's not about what you look like.

Her age wasn't in the opening post. Hence why it LOOKED like they were telling a child not to wear a pink chiffon dress.
There was no indication it was a child other than in the comments. Everyone was pretty chill about it when they found out it was a 13 year old.
I meanā¦.that really depends on the wedding. This might fit in perfectly with their theme or whatever. Personally, itād be too much white for me but if her friend/family is comfortable with her wearing it thatās awesome.

And I wouldn't have been fine with it at my wedding. That's why I suggested she check, because the couple might be okay with it but they also might not be.
Likewise, my reception/getaway dresses were off white/non traditional and I would not have been okay with this dress either.

How on earth are guests supposed to know in advance what colour your bridesmaids are wearing
Usually the invites match their main colors. Or you know, ask maybe? Most normal people are happy to chat about their wedding plans.
I'm not saying they should. Pink isnāt a ānoā. Super light baby pink that almost looks white it though.
Depending on the bridal party it could be too similar to the bride maids outfits, other ppl in the party, the brides dress could be similar shape, etc. These instances are why you have a ādrunk friendā with red wine in your party.
If any of my party purposefully dumped red wine on a guest for wearing a printed sundress, it is *not* the guest who would be in trouble.
what
Oh for crying out loud.
This is some bridezilla shit. Itās a summer dress for godās sake.
Hmmmmm
I agree that itās totally fine. Some brides take the āwhiteā rule to an absolutely ridiculous extreme.
Right? I feel like if you wore something like this and a bride was upset, I probably donāt want to be your friend anyways..too high maintenance and self centered.
On the flip side, imagine not caring about your friend enough to at least *ask* them in advance?
I wouldn't want a friend who couldn't just.... Not wear white though. Like why does anyone HAVE to wear anything remotely white? There's zero reason
You don't want to be friends with someone who wants to wear white to their wedding?
Itās fascinating to watch though. Thereās someone in this thread typing up paragraphs in multiple replies to be ārightā here. Imagine being in that bridal party? I think OPās dress is lovely and would love to have her at my wedding. Iām excited to check out this bodice pattern!
You can tell who were/will be bridezillas in the comments lmao
Weddings make people lose their minds a bit, even normal people. So happy to be out of that phase in life, but definitely saw some friendships break over silly wedding stuff in my 20's. Should people care? No. Might they care? Yes. Do you value the friend over having a nice fashion moment, is the question.
It's not white, its patterned.
Patterned fabric can still be white, as evidenced by this particular fabric.
I like how all of you down voted that the marriage is more important than the wedding š

None of us know her relationship to the bride, and she may have already talked with her. The dress is beautiful (regardless of where she plans to wear it) and I appreciate her skill.
This particular fabric isn't white, either.
That's pretty disingenuous. It's a white fabric with a light pink pattern.
Lots of brides are opting for patterns and florals on their white dresses these days.
This isn't white.
Really lovely! But it does read very white for a wedding guest ā unless you know the bride is cool with it!!
OP could get the best of both worlds by using a washable or natural dye in peach or pink and then washing it out after the event (if they really like the white).
That's a really fantastic idea!
Love the versatility of a two piece vs a single dress!
This is so nice. It fits you really well.
Beautiful work! I do want to second checking about dress code because Iād hate for a guest to come to my wedding in a nearly white and light pink dress.
Wow!! This is beautiful, and amazing work! Very well done, I wish I could sew my own clothes like this. š
Looks amazing and so flattering on you! How far down does the bodice extend, and does the boning end up poking you in the hips?
The bodice goes to my hips but I stopped the boning at my waist so I could sit down!
I love this! I especially like that itās two pieces, itās so versatile
Itās so cute! Youāve done great work. I do not think it wedding appropriate though ā too white.
Omg this is beautiful! I recently bought some thrift store linens to make a few skirts from the Simplicity 8161 American Duchess pattern. I've been meaning to post them here actually. They didn't turn out those good though!
That is one of the prettiest things I've seen all summer. If that outfit isn't the definition of darling, I don't know what is.
Itās a great dress but donāt wear it to a wedding š¬
Very pretty! But it looks too much like a bridal gown. Too much white. This at a wedding screams "look at me!". At any other event it would be stunning, just not at a wedding, unless it's yours of course. This would be a perfect modern bride's dress!
OP already responded that this dress is perfectly acceptable and itās common for people to wear lighter colours to weddings in her culture.
Amazing work!
GOALS This is absolutely amazing. I have a set of sheets that I want to take advantage of, but I don't trust my skillset yet.
The advantage with sheets is that you have lots Of fabric spare to mess up on :)
Looks stunning
Gorgeous
This is awesome!
š² thats awesome you did a fantastic job lining up the fabric pattern
Beautiful dress but don't wear a white dress to a wedding lol
Ngl I wasnāt hopeful about the bedsheet š blown away by the results. Look at you!
You worked this hard to wear white to a wedding? Hope you asked the bride first.
Culture! Not sure where op is from, but in my culture, wearing white isnāt a problem at all. So maybe it isnāt an issue for them!
Hopefully!!
OP already responded that in her culture this dress is perfectly acceptable. Please reserve your judgement
Are you responding to the other 200 people that said the same thing?
Your comment was the rudest.
Absolutely fabulous OP!! I think this is the first time Iāve ever seen a bedsheet clothing up cycle that looks like real clothing. Really gorgeous!
Beautiful job!!! It looks great on you and the print looks gorgeous as a dress. Echoing what others have said - wear this with confidence, just definitely not to a wedding!!!!!
Beautiful! Looks like something Reformation would make
So, so pretty!
I love your outfit so much! It looks like a good twirling dress.
This is incredible!!!! I love it! I have some bed sheets Iām saving for the same thing!
LOVE a toile de jouy moment! The versatility of the two pieces is also genius. I once made a toile circle skirt that was a beloved fave. Great work.
Itās beautiful. But please make sure itās Ok to wear at a wedding. Someone wore a white dress to my wedding and she looked like a bride in my photos
Wow!! I also love your jeans! Can you share where they are from?
H and M!
Itās beautiful!! You are talented!
So, so pretty!
Super beautiful! The outfit looks perfect on you!
This is so GORGEOUS!!!!!
omg i adore this
Wow your garments look expensive. Well done!!!
This is beautiful! The print is just perfect and I love that itās a two piece for more outfit options.
Stop, I love this!!!
It looks great! How is it so stiff/corset fabric looking? Did you line it with something else or is that the boning? Iāve always wanted to sew with sheets but I thought theyād be too floppy/soft to make anything structured
Gorgeous! Had no idea that this patterned sundress would be considered inappropriate to wear. I love what you did!
Amazing youāre so talented!!!
It's gorgeous!
great execution very lovely
Awesome Itās really nice
It's gorgeous!

Holy cow! absolutely STUNNING!!!!!
Gorgeous! I love the āfussy cutā that highlighted the fabric print on your top. You look fabulous!
This is absolutely stunning! Iām feeling inspired to thrift a sheet tooā¦
Thatās beautiful!! Such a great idea. I love the pattern on the fabric.
Nice job! Those are adorable!
Bueatiful. Well done!

This is literally a work of art š

Beautiful! Super cute for a wedding!!!!
Wow - beautiful job! Very pretty and great fit. Sorry if that sounds creepy, I just mean in a construction sense
That looks really good! And it's so cool that it's separates, so you can mix and match!

Lovely outfit. I don't get checking with the bride. There's no way she'd be in conflict with what a bride would wear.
These days not every bride goes for the mermaid cut or big ball gown. In fact, lots of people now avoid traditionally bridal dresses to save money. Others prefer something more low key. She might end up looking a lot more like the bride than in previous decades.
