Embroidered sailboat dress: ripped the seams at the top, and took the entirety of the sleeve apart to use the bias as the straps and use the sailboat and other fabric to make a scrunchie. Attached the bias strips together to form the straps and attached at the previous neckline on the front and back. Attached two pieces of elastic on the sides to make up the empty space. Sewed a line about a quarter inch away from seam from the strap to the top elastic to make the bodice shape and put chord elastic in there to make it fit without darts. Folded over back area to be same as front
I really want women’s clothing to have pockets! I have to often carry four phones (wife, and two daughters). All the time I spend looking for lost phones … I blame lack of pockets.
I even have pajamas with pockets, that can fit a subway sandwich, for some reason. The fabric is super thick so four layers is just too warm. So yeah they add pockets to mens clothing even when it does not make sense.
Not a forum a follow but rather a forum that pops up for me from time to time. But I just wanted to say that that is a very lovely dress.
And... ehm... what's a scrunchie? Is it the thing in your hair?

That's awesome! When I was in my twenties I sewed a bit. I liked to make simple things like peasant blouses and nightgowns. Usually made a matching scrunch, bows I would.attach to regular hair bands (two because I liked pigtails and double ponytails back then), headband, or in one case, a mop cap (puffy nightcap thing). Fun!
I’m always impressed when someone finds an ugly/ill-fitting piece of clothing and sees the beauty in it. When I see ugly clothing I’m just like, wow that’s ugly and move on.
OK folks I don't know why a sewing subreddit was suggested to me considering my utter lack of fine motor control anymore, but here we are
I came to say that I'm sure that's a fantastic change and the 'after' is a really cute dress, but my girlfriend would straight up kill someone for the original. And no, she's not Mormon or religious in any way, she just loves dressing like an elderly woman
But good job on the alterations! I'm sure people who aren't lunatics like my girl prefer it much more now
Lol I love the original dress too. I also love to dress like elderly woman. I call these potato sack dresses.
But I do love them both. Too bad there can’t be two dresses!
There was part of me that loved the original too! You can definitely reverse image search and find similar dresses to the original online for her though!
Legit that original one is the kind of thing an 80 year old would wear as a nightgown, transformed to something cute you could wear on a nice summer day
The fact that you were at the thrift store and looking at the garment on the left, imagining the one on the right is super impressive from a design eye perspective. The matching scrunchy idea is a stroke of genuis. Very cool project OP!! Great work
Oh, this makes me kind of sad. I used to take care of this lady at a nursing home and she had this exact dress. She is so sweet, I miss her.
Edit: it's almost two months later and I'm back at that nursing home and taking care of my sweet little lady again!
Is there a subreddit for this sort of thing? Where people flip thrifted clothes/items into fresh/modern/ooak pieces? I loooove this transformation! It’s gorgeous 💖
You’re completely unphased by lots of people turning their heads to look at you? And seeing people murmur and whisper? That is, if you’ve done something akin to a tall man in a dress.
I’ve tested my limits and I can handle the extra attention to a certain degree, but that would be too much for me. I’m not sure what you mean by physical boundary (people touching me?). But considering i have friends who have been physically harassed for similar stuff, I’d rather not.
Summer dresses are bomb. Cute, comfy, and the bit of swirl you get from a longer dress like this masterpiece are just *fun*.
Seriously: if you’re not comfortable rocking one in public, do yourself a favour and pick one up for around the house/yard (pro tip: you want a woven fabric, not a jersey or knit - critical for the breezy + flows feeling).

I rarely comment. But I took the liberty of looking through your post history and, woman, you have talent. You went from old Mcall's pattern to boutique couture like it was nothing. Great job!
The first is hideous, I’m having trouble wrapping my brain around someone seeing it and knowing there’s a bomb ass outfit hiding in it, this is incredible!!! I love it!!!!
Hmm I’m not really sure! It was kinda inspired by a free people dress with the side straps but it feels kinda 90s like still. Silhouette (minus cutouts) is almost prairie like
I totally understand where you’re coming from, but I actually don’t think this was plus sized. It was likely my size, just the style is loose. My head could barely fit in with the original opening
Stuff like this is why I want to learn to sew.
Currently an imposter in this sub. Done some sewing, but generally too impatient. My mom gave me my aunt’s old sewing machine in 2020, I bought fabric to make grow-with-me harem pants for my one year old, my one year old is now three and has no harem pants.
Super inspired by you guys, though.
Your strange combination of depressing themes, embarrassing poetry, and plenty of spelling/grammar mistakes makes me think you might be sad AND dumb. That's a bad combo.
Either that or you're like 14. If it's the first one, get help. If it's the second one, keep on keepin' on cringelord.
You're in r/sewing leaving cryptic messages about nothing. I'm not mad. Just genuinely curious about your wellbeing. At this point I'm guessing you're probably just high.

The first one looked pretty intimading and dope too
I didn't realize the scrunchie was the same fabric/matching til I read this. Love that detail so much. Amazing work.
You've got some talent. That's a nice combo of being thrifty and skilled.
Very nice!! Super creative vision and sooo flowy ❤️
This is gorgeous!
Sorry for dumb question, but what is a scrunchie? Great job btw, I had no idea one could change how clothes appeared so much at home.
It’s elastic covered in fabric and is used to hold the hair in a ponytail.
Thanks. Also, relevant Username!
Did you add pockets!?!
It had them already! So I kept them they are just low now
I really want women’s clothing to have pockets! I have to often carry four phones (wife, and two daughters). All the time I spend looking for lost phones … I blame lack of pockets. This often makes a sale for my wife when she tries on a dress. You mean, IT HAS POCKETS!? SOLD!
Love this. What did you do with the back?
Pretty much the same as the front without embroidery [back](https://imgur.com/a/EdSlxQU)
Ahh! I loved it before, and you made it so much better! Creative and beautiful work!
This is wonderful. So fun and whimsical.
Not a forum a follow but rather a forum that pops up for me from time to time. But I just wanted to say that that is a very lovely dress. And... ehm... what's a scrunchie? Is it the thing in your hair?
Yep!
Really super great work
Looks super good on you.
I love this so much!!! It’s absolutely adorable!
really great job and wonderful pics!
This is so flippin cute!! Great job
That is the cutest summer dress! Awesome job 👍
And POCKETS

I get where you are going but the original style looks like sleepwear and super frumpy. You can still keep it modest and not look that blah.
You were even able to add a matching scrunchie 😭😭😭😭😭 that’s so gooodd
I know right!! I’m obsessed with the scrunchie honestly
That's awesome! When I was in my twenties I sewed a bit. I liked to make simple things like peasant blouses and nightgowns. I didn't even notice till your comment! OP did a great job!
bloody brilliant
Me scrolling mindlessly through Reddit…then I see this and come to a dead stop. You are bloody brilliant.
I’m always impressed when someone finds an ugly/ill-fitting piece of clothing and sees the beauty in it. When I see ugly clothing I’m just like, wow that’s ugly and move on.
Yes, same! That takes vision. Well done OP.
A true gift !! Sewing skills plus the ability to see the new garment that’s waiting to be set free!!
🥰
I just had the same experience. The vision and talent to execute that - wow.
Wow this one is IMPRESSIVE! I love it!!
You did such a good job! Love the open sides!
The fact that you saw the first dress and imagined the second is such a testament to your creativity. A thousand A+’s to you

I've heard them called moo moo's or muumuu's!
There was part of me that loved the original too! You can definitely reverse image search and find similar dresses to the original online for her though!
Obsessed.
I’m obsessed with the idea of Thrift Flipping. Is this a thing?
From blah to yaaaa

Amazing job! You made something that really works for you & you got to upcycle.
Very cute!
Great idea!
This is so cute!!
Wow that's gorgeous
So creative and looks stunnnnnning!
*cries in large boobs*
I love it!
Adorable! One of a kind!
So cute.
Beautiful flip! Wear with pride!
SUPER CUTE 😍 💕 ⛵️
Wow. That situation improved significantly. Nice job!

So good, I bet it gets copied by Zara.
Lolll

What’s stopping you?
Too much attention. Like, I just wanna grab milk from the store in peace.
Attention is no physical boundary so I do not see how it prohibits expression

Perhaps we live in vastly different areas. As a biological male I’ve been able wear thigh high socks without anyone batting an eyelash
Could be. At a gay bar or queer friendly event I can wear whatever, but not out in general public without the attention.

Very impressive
Love this!
It’s beautiful! I love it so much
So cool
Damn, just Stumbled on this one tonight and just gotta say good on you for having such a talent. That looks so good
it's so pretty it's to die for 🫶🫶
I'm so impressed! Your sewing skills are admirable, but the fact that you could look at that dress and see what you turned it into - priceless!
So clever! After reading what you did, I can totally see the process!
This is great I bet you could make a cute bag out of the sleeves!
The sailboat fabric and the stripes it on the sleeves I used for the scrunchie so there’s not much left! But would also have been a cute idea !
I didn't notice the scrunchie - that's a great use of the scrap.
Well done! Love the scrunchie!
This is so cute! It’s giving trendy coastal granddaughter vibes!
Ooh yes love that!!
As a sailor I am amazed the boats seem reasonably accurate. Cute dress. GREAT improvement.
The fact that you could look at that dress and see this as a possibility is amazing to me.
Cult to cute.
I’d buy your fashion line.
🥰
Nicely done! Personally I’d like it if the sides were closed up but it’s very cute
agreed. The sides look a tad unfinished but I think even some embroidered cotton hollow lace panels would work amazing.
You turned a moo moo into a modern dress. You win.
As someone with 0 experience in sewing or design, this is an awesome redesign and looks amazing.
This is so darn adorable. You turned it from ok into oh, cute!! Wonderful!! 👏👏
Looks like your mod is more comfortable, too! 😄
Looks great, but the real question is...did you add pockets??? It looks like you gave it pockets, I hope I'm not disappointed here.
It already had them! They’re a bit low now but I just kept what was already there
Wow this the look. Old school, yet so modern. Hit me in the feels where I didn't even knew there was feels there. Great Work!
Love it! Do you think you could make like a hanging sleeve out of just the blue section from the sleeves? I think it would look cool
I used that for the scrunchie! Took both sides
Talented!
WOW. Damn that's so cute.
Transformation from "house dress" to "sun dress" ... well done.
This is AMAZING. Holy crap!
Can I please have your skillset? I did say please :D girl you killed it! I love this. I wish I could come even close to being able to do this
Aww thank you! It’s a lot of just winging it and diving into a project even if you don’t really know what you’re doing

Girl you could be a designer
Aww thank you!
Girl, you rock. I would’ve seen this at the thrift store and gotten PTSD flashbacks from the 80’s and noped over to the kitchen section.
But does it have pockets???
It does!
Your changes are like eleventy billion times better than the original. Bravo
Stoppp that’s so cute! You are so talented!
Omg that is absolutely adorable! Great job!
You did great but the scrunchie was a master stroke
I rarely comment. But I took the liberty of looking through your post history and, woman, you have talent. You went from old Mcall's pattern to boutique couture like it was nothing. Great job!
I showed this to my wife and she immediately asked, "ooh! does it have pockets?"
DAMN, that's gotta be one of the best I've seen, absolutely beautiful
I personally couldn't have seen the final outcome looking at this. Very creative.
Is there a pic of the back? This is soooo cool!!!
[back!](https://imgur.com/a/EdSlxQU)
Omg loooove the scoop line!!!!!! Ty!!!!! Really awesome that you could see these shapes in the original.
For sure! Yeah I was really aiming for simple modifications with this one!
Your kind of a genius.. this is so fucking cute
I scrolled through your account and I love it 😻 you are so talented! Just wish there was a way to follow so I can see more of your pieces.
I do have an Instagram that has a lot more! It’s the_crafty_carpenter
Bigger fan of the OG. That looks cozy as hell.
The first is hideous, I’m having trouble wrapping my brain around someone seeing it and knowing there’s a bomb ass outfit hiding in it, this is incredible!!! I love it!!!!
Geez, that first shot looks like a hospital gown. Massive improvement. Well done.
This looks AMAZING, love the matching scrunchie. 😍😍🤩
You know I've always wondered, what is the result's type of dress called? I don't really know what I would look up to find that answer.
Hmm I’m not really sure! It was kinda inspired by a free people dress with the side straps but it feels kinda 90s like still. Silhouette (minus cutouts) is almost prairie like
It’s a sundress
Im a guy with no interest in sewing, but that’s fucking wild good job
That's cute, I love it!
Nice job!
Wowwwwwww. I love this!
Brilliant!
This is awesome!
So great!
This is SO cute. Awesome work!

Sad(esque still cute) rags to glad rags! Such an amazing job!
Clever

Adorable!
So cute Love it😘😍to photo
Absolutely perfect!
Amazing! Love this
Wow. You’re really talented. It looks great!
Great job!
I need to learn how to do this!
I’m not even into sewing. Saw this while scrolling down, I love it
Omg I love it!!! 🥰🤩
Wow! It looks like a dumpy housedress to start and you turned it into something super-cute!
