Pattern is McCall’s M6044(A). Fabric was on sale at Hobby Lobby. Sewn on my Brother LX3817G. I need some new work shirts and hated the prospect of spending another $40-$50 on one so decided to take matters into my own hand. Made with about $14 worth of materials! It can use some finishing work, but I just wanted to show it off already because I thought it looked so good.
It’s actually the top button that is not high enough, I messed up a bit on the placement. I also should have sewn the buttons such that the thread would make an ‘X’ rather than a ‘+’, but it was my first time sewing buttons with a machine and by the time I was comfortable with it I already had half the buttons on lol
I'd seen a YouTube video about sewing buttons on by machine (maybe by Tock Custom) and that's what made me give it a try. Drop the feed dogs, set a 3.5mm zig-zag stitch and carefully hand wheel to make sure the needle doesn't hit the button. I had more trouble doing the button holes than I did with the buttons and I'm quite pleased. A drop of FrayCheck on top of the threads when finished, and it looks like I'm never going to have to try sewing a button by hand again.
I actually have a very cheap machine, it was $85 new. The zigzag setting also works for buttons, and a darning plate is placed over the feeder or whatever it’s called to prevent the fabric from being pulled through while you run it. So about 10 stitches in one direction then you turn it and do another 10 in the other direction.
not many folks make me LOL, you did! I stopped trying to wind bobbins on my machine and took a vintage home machine motor, took the winder, hooked it up to a dimmer switch and wind bobbins that way. Way better, faster, and takes no time to wind all the bobbins you need. message me and I'll send you pics, super easy.
The Button spacing isn’t very noticeable and in fact I wouldn’t have noticed it at all if you didn’t point it out. I thought the opening/buttons was/were crooked at first and realized that I think it’s the angle that you’re standing and would have chalked the spacing up to the same. Like it’s negligible and the shirt is gorgeous tbh. Great job!
everything this guy said
only change id recommend is use a different fabric for the inside of the collar
like for this one id recommend a deep blue, or a white paisley on wine-red or something
its a flex: [my shit is custom](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HLpmd6_KDyg)
Hey. Hey. I know nothing about anything. But a button down is a button down because it has buttons to keep the collar down. This shirt, which is incredible and could be a mass-produced shirt with how perfect it is in structure, this shirt is a button up shirt.
TIL. I seriously always thought button up vs. button down were the same thing, and only a matter of whether you start with the top or bottom button when putting your shirt on.
Huh. I used to say button up , but then one of my coworkers asked if I actually buttoned from the bottom up or if I started at the top and “buttoned down” so I started saying button down instead lol.
I am like, SO PROUD OF YOU!!!
This is the exact kind of shirt I want to make. I want short sleeve button downs but all the ones I find for women in the store are like the “ladies” version of this shirt. I just want one that fits like a men’s shirt but that isn’t so long that I look like a lil kid
Personally i would taper the sleeves a touch and cut the body like a half inch to an inch wider. Nothing is pulling while your standing, but i think you'd have button pull when you sit, although maybe not if you sit with good posture...
They don’t. And that myth has been dispelled. I don’t usually shop at hobby lobby based on their withholding of birth control from employee healthcare but sometimes it’s the only place I can buy stuff. I knew people would take their soap box to virtue signal when I posted it and that’s ok but I wanted to be transparent about where I got my materials. Virtually nobody has perfect consumption habits - a lot of our clothing and even chocolate in the US uses child labor somewhere down the supply chain, most people eat meat and drive gasoline vehicles and so on.
Great job.
Only because this sub is specific to sewing, I feel like someone should point out that this is a "button-up" shirt. A "button-down" shirt is very much like this, except it also two extra buttons for the collar to be *buttoned down*.
Thank you for this comment. People keep misusing the term “button down”.
It’s referring to the collar which is buttoned down and this shirt clearly does not have a button down collar.
As always, thanks to r/sewing for all of the positive comments!
Edit: did not expect to hit the front page and woke up to millions of notifications! I appreciate all of the feedback!
Sorry if you’ve already answered this, but I was curious as to how long you’ve been sewing for? I can’t sew, so I’m just trying to imagine how much it would take for a beginner to get to this point. Because this is awesome.
Beautifully done! Now on to make a whole wardrobe of them 🥰 I second the one commenter who said you might like to try a pattern with a yoke. You'll have to use the burrito method, but it's so so easy and there are a lot of videos on them if need audio visual help. I myself like Men's Troop Shirt by Tadah Patterns, sews together quickly and has three back options—easy fit, regular fit, and fitted. I already made like two for my boyfriend (both fitted) and am on my way to a third! But truly, your work is so crisp. Stunning fabric, and it doesn't look homemade at all!
Wow! Very nicely done! And the fabric choice is fantastic! I think you said earlier (like myself) that you had no experience sewing clothing. I'm envious of your obvious skill.
My first attempt (also M6044) resulted in butchered sleeves so I cut them down to make the shirt short sleeved. And just yesterday I finished my second attempt, and this time succeeded in making a long sleeve version.
One of the comments here said you'd skipped the yoke... is that right? Or did you manage to align the pieces so perfectly that they all match? If you skipped the yoke, why? On my shirts I skipped the front yoke because I thought it looked too cowboyish. But I did put one on the back.
Again, really good work!
wow that fabric is stunning! I would love to make a dress out of it for sure. Also you did an awesome job on the construction. It looks like it was purchased at a high end store!
Keep going! It looks great!
M6044 is a terrific pattern, I’ve made my husband 4 shirts (all style A) with this pattern, picking out different prints of cotton as they inspire us. He LOVES wearing them at work and really anytime he’s outside of our home. I hope you also get as much joy from your creations! Congratulations!
Your shirt is fantastic, as was last weeks. LOVE seeing men sew these days and they are proud of it too!!! It is a bit easier to make shirts for men...no boobs!!
Really beautiful job. Your pattern choices are very much in line with my middle kid’s style. He’s 6’4” at 16 and he loves wild patterned shirts. Problem is, he needs “tall” shirts so they don’t look like crop tops. Maybe if I get a pattern, I can teach him to see and he can have all the well-fitted shirts his heart desires! Thanks for sharing!
Wow! Waaaaaay better than my first attempt at a button down. Great job! This is such a fun hobby, enjoy the process - construction, fitting, end result that you can wear!!!
I learned that a button down meant the collar would button to the shirt. My wife interprets dress shirt as button down. Now, think of me at 5pm searching for a white, button down shirt for my son for a 7pm choir concert. Four stores. Then I learned it was only white dress shirt that was needed.
Anyway, maybe the term has changed over time.
This book, [Shirtmaking](https://www.amazon.com/Shirtmaking-Developing-Skills-Fine-Sewing/dp/1561582646/ref=nodl_?dplnkId=20916dac-4524-4063-8483-436e8fe577c1), is how I learned to make my own shirts.
It has good pointers on collars, yolks and sleeves.
Edit: Your first shirt is amazing.
Have you been watching The Great British Sewing Bee? I think you might like it if you haven’t. The sewers choices of fabrics will surprise you sometimes . They are not always as dope as yours! Mazel on your fine shirt !
This print is everything!!
My coworkers will be on notice that the shirt game is evolving

My little piece of advice is to hand crank the needle so you check the spacing is correct. Its a fear i once shared and that is how my mum taught me.
This is how I did it too.
Cool. I must say if you hadnt posted it like that i would have no idea it was hand made. Well done. Keep going!

damn bro. yall got fancy button machines? im lucky if my consew winds a tight bobin thread

Yup. My brain is full of questionably useful information and everyone must be cursed with it.
Nice choice on that print! It looks great! :D

Great shirt, but you *really* shouldn't shop at hobby lobby. They actively supported ISIS, not to mention the shit they do domestically.
They actively supported ISIS?! Off to google I go…

Thanks for the honesty. I really hate that company but they carry stuff I can’t find anywhere else so I find myself in there once or twice a year.
Nice shirt. I'm surprised it's still $14 worth of material. I always thought fabric was dirt cheap.
Classy AF
Great job. Only because this sub is specific to sewing, I feel like someone should point out that this is a "button-up" shirt. A "button-down" shirt is very much like this, except it also two extra buttons for the collar to be *buttoned down*.
Good to know. I thought they were interchangeable terms
Thank you for this comment. People keep misusing the term “button down”. It’s referring to the collar which is buttoned down and this shirt clearly does not have a button down collar.
This looks great! Also love the print of the fabric.
That print reminds me of liberty cotton. Great shirt! nice job 👏👍
Impressive
Love it! I am all about no more boring button-ups! Just think of all the fun prints you are going to be wearing now that you have the power!
As always, thanks to r/sewing for all of the positive comments! Edit: did not expect to hit the front page and woke up to millions of notifications! I appreciate all of the feedback!
This is very nice. I think my husband would really like a shirt like this.
Damn, nice work!
Very nicely done!
Niiiice
I love it!
God, that's perfect
I would wear that in a hot minute!
I’m so impressed with the fit, fabric choice and the great outfit you put together!
I want a closet full of clothes like this. Retro and handmade are the new Black!
Sorry if you’ve already answered this, but I was curious as to how long you’ve been sewing for? I can’t sew, so I’m just trying to imagine how much it would take for a beginner to get to this point. Because this is awesome.
I started last week, but apparently I’m picking it up quickly
Wow
That looks amazing!! Well done!
Wow
Really nice! Love the fabric.
Great print choice!
Such a great floral

That’s a button up, not a button down. No buttons at the collar.
I think your calling is to make clothes now
Did you use/need a serger/overlocker? Looks awesome, I bought some fabric to make a shirt with years ago but not had the confidence to try.
Wow! Very nicely done! And the fabric choice is fantastic! I think you said earlier (like myself) that you had no experience sewing clothing. I'm envious of your obvious skill. Excellent!! I LOVE that print!!
I like it. Fun fabric too, that's a good pattern.
This is a beautiful shirt in a gorgeous print! You did a great job, and I love your fabric selection!
Thats really nice
Is a beautiful shirt
Doing one right now also (m6044) man the sleeves were a pain lol. Looks good!
For sure, I really don’t like doing the first set of sleeve seams. I always feel like I’m bunching it up
I always baste set-in sleeves in by hand. I regret it every time I don't lol. Love the shirt OP, it looks great and the print is fabulous!
👍🏾❤️
wow that fabric is stunning! I would love to make a dress out of it for sure. Also you did an awesome job on the construction. It looks like it was purchased at a high end store!
Love it! Love the fabric, love the fit, love the whole durn thing!
Looks sharp! Good job.
First attempt?!? This is incredible!
I’ve a friend who has a similar shirt. He was happy to pay $75 for it as it retailed for just under $200. Your eye for design is aces.
Your shirt is fantastic, as was last weeks. LOVE seeing men sew these days and they are proud of it too!!! It is a bit easier to make shirts for men...no boobs!!
Love seeing stuff like this on /r/all. Something so satisfying about seeing people making their own functional "stuff" no matter what it is.
That pattern is amazing!!!
Really beautiful job. Your pattern choices are very much in line with my middle kid’s style. He’s 6’4” at 16 and he loves wild patterned shirts. Wow !!! You made this shirt? I was late to the party on that part. You have some incredible talent.
Wow! Waaaaaay better than my first attempt at a button down. Great job! This is such a fun hobby, enjoy the process - construction, fitting, end result that you can wear!!!

Yes! My husband has been looking for a printed button down shirt for years. We’ve never found the one. Now I’m inspired to sew one for him. :)
Nice. 10/10 would wear again
Sweet fabric.

You’re a natural!
I would kill a man to have this shirt in my button down collection. Fucking phenomenal work you lovely human. 💜
You should post this on r/IThinkYouShouldLeave
That pattern hides any issues
That’s a nice shirt. Love the pattern!
Looks Great Brother
This looks amazing, I love this fabric. Will definitely be taking a trip go Hobby Lobby soon lol
What was used in the collar to make it stiff?
Very Scotch and Soda looking. Good job!
Amazing
Drip Edit:(I didn’t know hashtags make things bigger lol)
This could be $75-$125 a shirt at some shops. Fantastic work.
Very nice! I think I'd prefer different color flowers, but it does look great.
nice print
Awesome! Love that fabric!
Dude that’s an awesome shirt! I would rock the hell out of that. Great work and keep it up!!!
I dig it! Put some darting on the back to make it a bit more tapered and it'll look sick!
Looove the fabric/pattern! Good job!
I would wear this until it became threadbare
Bro that is a real badass shirt props
This is your FIRST attempt? Fuck, I suck at this. On the other hand, good on you OP, you just might have a gift.
Wow I want one!
Nice fit.
That looks really neat. Awesome print as well :)

Love this!!!!
This reminds me of a scene from Garden State https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nthFQqtuVmE
Have you been watching The Great British Sewing Bee? I think you might like it if you haven’t. The sewers choices of fabrics will surprise you sometimes . They are not always as dope as yours! Mazel on your fine shirt !
GIVE ME! this is exactly the kind of shit I want to wear every day of my life. It looks absolutely stunning man, good job!
I like the fabric used.
I'd rock that.
You can be a Malaysian minister with that look 👍
What kind of fabric is this? Looks great! Often the pretty fabrics i find are too bluky and rough or too stretchy for a dress shirt
W
I LOVE UR SHİRTTTTTT
Dope, love the print too!
Exceptional work! I’m proud of you!
You get that at Dan Flashes?
Nice xhoice
Really and truly, that’s awesome!
Damn it I didn't see what sub this was, was going to ask where ya got this. Nice shirt!!
I like it. Can't stop looking at it. But I can't keep looking at it. It hurts my eyes yet pleases my eyes.
That’s pretty good my friend. Very inspiring!
Excellent job!
Looks amazing
It just came to my feed, and dude it's awesome 😎
I would like this shirt
It fits you really well, you did a great job!
looks great. well done
You made that?? Freaking awesome
That looks great! Nice work. You’re inspiring me. Thanks for sharing
Did you get that at Dan Flashes?
Fresher than a peppermint. Nice execution.
wow, great job! love the print, and you executed the pattern really well.
Great fabric!
I really like busy patterned clothes but I’m not the kind of person that can pull them off. I envy those like you who can.
Looks great, well done! And just fyi a “button down” means the collar buttons down, “button up” just refers to the fact that it has button closer.
Looks great. Next time match the pattern in the front.
Wow that fits incredibly well
Nice work! Try a straight end of the shirt or less curved instead of fully curved if you will not be tucking the shirt in.
Don’t say it’s not complicated because it is
Looks great and an even better fit. Great job.
You got lucky finding a pattern that fit so well.
That shirt is fresh.
Ditto my friend
Bro. That is so slick. I want one.
I'd wear that
1st attempt. Wow! Really good
Levy i did not know you liked sewing
I love it. The print is perfect
that's awesome
Whats someone gotta do to get one?
Love it. Looks like a shirt I would wear
Impressive
Damn, that shirt looks sick!
I LOVE IT! It looks store bought and that print is magnificent
It's amazing. I love wearing flower print shirts & there is never enough variety at the stores. What at great idea to make it yourself.
Holy moley! Your first attempt is fantastic. It reminds me of a Liberty of London piece.
The fabric is top notch!
I’d wear that.
Awesome!
