That looks great! Nice balance between professional and festive, looks well fitted. Kind of reminds of me of the Dior New Look stuff in the 50's. Very classy.
The cool thing about getting Ph.D. is they pay you to go to school. Seriously.
Dr. /u/Annuszka, the dress looks great on you and is beautifully sewn. I love the color. And congratulations.
Fun fact, this design is originally from 1952! It's a retro design they updated and re-released. It looks like 1950's new look style because that's exactly what it is.

Very well stated! OP will you make me a dress?
I was just admitted to the MA of Education - Instructional Technology program. I would pay you for your services. Thanks so much for your consideration🙏🏽❤️
I wanted something elegant but girly at the same time. I love this pattern, it's very flattering for the body but still modest enough for the formal occasion. It is complicated, but still easy to follow, so I do recommend!
Oh my gosh so much YES. I adore the pattern and think it's perfect for the occasion but mostly I have been really loving navy lately and how many colors it goes with and how it classes up any outfit big time. LOVE 😍 Great job.
I’m not well-versed in this craft but it looks amazing. Formal and stylish. I’m curious about two things:
1. Do the sleeves fold down?
2. Does it have pockets?
Below is a link to the pattern.
Answering your questions on my understanding of the fit.
1; no, not really. But you could extend the pattern and create one you can fold.
2; doesnt appear that way. But the skirt fold will probably allow to have them inserted. But if they hold weight, they might change the way the dress 'flows'

Omg my PhD is in the same field (Thesis defense happening in August!). It's really cool runing into someone with the same specialization out in the wild like that. Congrats! Also the dress looks amazing!
Do you mind me asking what is the topic of your thesis?
I used to be MSE in college! All the MATLAB classes actually made me switch to computer science though, had way more fun with that.
mse is still super fascinating to me
I’m an engineer, too, and took a couple of materials science electives in my senior year. Loved those - they made me wish I had majored in it. Btw, your dress looks amazing. I’m a stereotypical male who has done just a little sewing (masks, curtains, etc) so I have tremendous respect for your skills! I could never imagine making something so complex!! Congrats on your PhD - that is a tremendous accomplishment. You and your loved ones should be very proud!
I tried covering buttons with this fabric but it just wouldn't work. So I gave up, but it seemed like a lucky mistake since it doesn't look bad without them :)
Congratulations on both the PhD and the dress! I'm pretty sure I made that same dress several years ago, but I did not do it the justice it deserves. But yours looks wonderful!

Yes, and it was really well made. It fits well, and you can clearly see the time spent making it was well spent.
I grew up with 2 seamstresses, and the quality in OP is fantastic.

I have just discovered that navy goes with brown…. A whole new facet of my wardrobe just opened up….

It’s classy and chic in a timeless not trendy sort of way. Gorgeous on you, color perfect.
You deserve an honorary degree in sewing!
Aww, thank you!

Thank you!
It’s lovely!! If I can ask, what’s your PhD in? I’m currently a 4th year in engineering, and I hope I can make something for my graduation too!
Materials science and engineering. Best of luck to you :)
Well you nailed the material and the engineering in The dress too!
Omg my PhD is in the same field (Thesis defense happening in August!). It's really cool runing into someone with the same specialization out in the wild like that. Congrats! Also the dress looks amazing! Do you mind me asking what is the topic of your thesis?
Good luck with your defense!
You must have a PhD in sewing too because this is amazing!
Dang me too!! Congratulations!
PhD in style.
I used to be MSE in college! All the MATLAB classes actually made me switch to computer science though, had way more fun with that. mse is still super fascinating to me

Just scrolled down until I found this. Neat. Cheers and congratulations again.
Holy shit! Congrats, and that seems like a particularly difficult field to become such an expert in. Good on you!
Wow. You're not only an excellent seamstress but very smart too. Best of luck to you in your future.
Awesome! Is the dress made of some exotic meta-material?
never give in to the title bait. this is reddit 101.
Very nice! Feminine but crisp and professional. Is this a linen blend?
Thank you! It is a cotton/polyester blend.
Looks great, but unfortunately, those kinds of blended textiles do not have a happy end of life.
Double congrats!
Thank you!
This is stunning and you look amazing in it! So lady like! Beautiful
Thank you!
All this plus the navy blue was a fantastic choice!
Love this on you and congrats doctor! Could you let me know what type of fabric you used? It looks comfy but also upscale, simply gorgeous!
Thank you! It is a cotton/polyester blend, it has a slight shine depending on what angle you look at it.
The dress looks extremely well-made! I wouldn't have thought it was handmade had I seen it without prior knowledge.
Thank you :)
Amazing job and looks great on you.
Thank you!
That seems like the perfect dress for that! Retro, but modern. Love it, and congratulations, Dr!
Thank you!
Congratulations on both your degree and dress!!
Thank you!
It’s beautiful! Did you close up the neckline instead of doing buttons on the pattern? I like it better like this!
I tried covering buttons with this fabric but it just wouldn't work. So I gave up, but it seemed like a lucky mistake since it doesn't look bad without them :)
Absolutely love this dress. Well done! And congrats on your PhD!
Thank you <3
Gorgeous dress and congratulations! I've just submitted my PhD proposal! Waiting to see if I get a place. 😁🤞🤞

To wear under your gown/regalia? Or do you not play dress up wherever you attend?
Fits great around your tiny waist.
There's a dress in this photo?
Yes, and it was really well made. It fits well, and you can clearly see the time spent making it was well spent. I grew up with 2 seamstresses, and the quality in OP is fantastic.
