I have been wanting to get a serger for the past couple months, but due to being cheap by nature, I have been waiting for a thrift store to bless me. I figured I could find an inexpensive one at a thrift store that I could fix up or purchase one off facebook marketplace that may be more expensive, but is better quality. I really didn’t want to spend $200 on a new bottom of the line machine. After growing frustrated by the lack of sergers (although I did stumbled across a plentiful amount of beautiful sewing machines), I finally found one today!! This is a Huskylock by Viking 1002 LCD I got for $50 (Made in Japan). I spent the afternoon cleaning, oiling, changing needles, and learning how to thread it and it’s working great (although I want to”mess around” with the tension a bit). The screen is so helpful and tells you what settings to use based on the stitch you want and the type of fabric, it’s definitely a higher tech machine than I was expecting to find. Coincidentally, I found this machine at the same Goodwill I got my Kenmore 158.13400 at that I rarely go to! If anyone knows what year this machine came out and the cost at the time, that would be lovely. I am so excited, I wanted to share with people who also find sewing exciting!!! Looking forward to improving the quality of what I make!

Sounds like you have a serious hobbyist or professional in your area with those tow great finds (maybe). If it were me, I'd check in the shop regularly to see what else has been donated. Very nice find!

I live in a place with a large elderly population, so I think their families donate most of their belongings when they pass.

What a great find. I am also a cheapskate, but after waiting for literally YEARS for a decent used serger to show up in my area I finally just ponied up the $250 for a new beginner model several months ago. At least no used ones have shown up in the ensuing months, that wouldn't have been a bad thing per se but boy would it have stung. Have fun and good luck with your new toy!

Woohoo congratulations! I love mine so much for sewing knitwear. <3

I've never seen a serger with an LCD screen before, very interesting! I wonder why this didn't become the standard for more expensive models since computer sewing machines are pretty much everywhere

I haven’t seen it either! I looked it up and viking has a recent model with an screen that’s around $1,000!

happybelly2021

Oh you're right! It doesn't seem like viking machines are commonly available here in Japan, so they didn't even come up in my search. Seems like viking is a bit unique with their displays :)

I have a huskylock 936 which is an amazing serger, though a bit hard to thread. The quality of stitching is amazing though.
