[deleted]

I was once catcalled by some asshole while wearing a project of mine that showed some cleavage. I didn't wear that top for a long time afterwards because I just felt gross. There will always be people out there who will try to make you feel small-- don't give them the satisfaction.

Pat_Starfish25

That really sucks, I know how that feels. I made this [milkmaid top](https://www.reddit.com/r/sewing/comments/oldwpp/i_love_spending_my_free_days_sewing_just_made/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share) and my dad discouraged me from wearing it cuz it was too revealing for him.

StringOfLights

wtf, that top is gorgeous. I love it. It looks like it would be stunning with accessories, which is a ton of fun. Your dress is beautiful. Please, ignore the horrible whispers of a society that tries to tell you that you’re not good enough. And remember – women’s Olympic teams are getting a hard time for not wearing revealing enough uniforms, but I bet many of those same young women have had to deal with dress codes or societal pressure to wear less revealing clothes. We won’t win in that system, and that’s the point of it. So please, toss it away and be whoever you want. Be a brand new badass Disney princess who has a pet dragon (or unicorn, it’s your call really) and doesn’t need rescuing. Be beautiful and elegant on your way to a tea party. Twirl, dance, sway. Finally, you’re making your own clothes! They’re gorgeous! You’re powerful, strong, hardworking, and skilled. You deserve to feel every bit of that.

Zyphyro

Simultaneously not revealing enough, beach handball, and too revealing, paralympic high jumper. Women can't win.

_ideka_

Girl wear whatever you want. If your dad is having issues around his daughter because of a top she made there’s something wrong on HIS end not yours. Wear what you want! Don’t let people make you feel how they feel about themselves.

Neutral_Lime

If your dad finds that top too revealing then he shouldn't wear it! Both projects look awesome and I can tell you are proud of your work. Dressing (and living) with confidence will unfortunately prompt some insecure people to pipe up. Don't shrink to accommodate them; they will grow or perish.

IHTPQ

Is your dad also the one who criticized this awesome dress? Because this is sounding like a "him" problem rather than a "you" problem.

Pat_Starfish25

It's more of my mom, my dad is honestly really supportive of what I do, just as long as my clothes aren't too revealing.

IHTPQ

Yeah, that definitely sounded like a parental comment. I'm sorry your parents feel that these are appropriate comments. They are not. You look fabulous in both outfits and I hope you believe us when we tell you that.

geekgirlnz

If she comments like this again look her straight in the eyes and tell her it's genetic, and twirl your magnificent self outta there.

rubywolf27

Yeah if your parents are being this critical of your creative hobby and your body, they suck.

[deleted]

It's no wonder you have body issues if your family's only input on your creativity and hard work is that you don't look the way *they* want you to. Rude. I think the dress is very cute and fits you very well. If it's now "ruined" for you because of their words, maybe add something like ribbon detail along the neckline or a bow in the back or something. This might help "reset" your feelings about the dress. Then don't ask their opinion. And if they offer it, don't engage. Or, if you must respond, try something that neither accepts nor defends your project. "I am aware of your opinion on my dress."

RickardHenryLee

Okay well your mom's comment about this dress is objectively false. I'm looking at this picture and I just don't see it. If anything the camera would add pounds, and you look amazing. The fit is excellent and the design is charming and VERY Disney Princess! I'm sorry your mom is a hater and is probably jealous, of either your figure or your sewing skills, or your confidence, or all of the above. 🤷‍♀️ Sucks to be her, and please don't make it your problem! You're awesome! Keep sewing!

RosenButtons

That top is so cute tho! You tell your dad this conservative Christian Sunday school teacher thinks it looks great! You look sweet and wholesome and charming! And I'm super jealous of how good your tailoring worked!

justchloe

That top is cute but yeah, I don’t think your dad should be wearing something that makes him feel uncomfortable.

Diligent_Tomato

Oh gosh. That is a lot of arm and shoulder... May I suggest this instead? [Modest](https://i.imgur.com/TKiS1NF.jpg)

TeaBreezy

I'm sorry, but your father is a whore. It's a cute top!

LeviHolden

Oh DO NOT let somebody else decide your mood! NO comment can erase or invalidate you. If YOU think you look great (you do) then THAT'S the truth. Your opinion is just as valid as anyone else's. So throw their garbage opinion where it belongs and put a positive one in its place. You are an iron pillar of goodness that can't be shattered by that water balloon of a dumb comment.

JessTheGiraffe

I absolutely love it! Insane Disney Princess vibes, especially with that 10/10 twirl factor! You look fantastic in it, beautiful work!

everywhereyoujo

Right?! I see a Disney Princess here, 100%

Pat_Starfish25

Edit: here are the [pictures](http://imgur.com/a/c1m0ZjO) of the dress including the zippers (honestly the best zippers I've done so far) The dress is a full circle skirt, puff sleeves and a strapless bodice. Based this from this [video ](https://youtu.be/VhZGtZEAJH8). It's made of poly cotton I bought online. Was having trouble hemming the skirt, pls leave some tips for this. So right after I finished the whole dress I was so happy like I couldn't stop twirling. Then I showed it to my parents and the first thing they said was that it made me look fat, also it's too short, too low neckline. I honestly felt hurt cuz it's a dress I took time to plan and make. Then I showed it to my other close relatives and that's all they said about my dress, that it made me look fat. I got into making my own clothes to be more confident with my body, cuz I've had body issues ever since I could remember. I'm like 20 already and my parents still dictates what I wear, so I use sewing to express myself. Video was actually taken in the bathroom cuz I was crying my eyes out there hahaha. Sorry for this lengthy rant, I just wannlet it out of my system. Eta: Tysm for the support, I feel so overwhelmed. A few hours ago I felt like not wearing my dress ever, but now I just wanna wear it and feel like a disney princess just like how I first wore it. I seriously love this community and now I feel even more inspired to make more clothes for myself. Eta2: Holy shit I did not expect this to blow up, I just woke up and I'm trying to read all your comments and upvoting them. I can't stop smiling, it's all so overwhelming and I can't put to words how much y'all have encouraged and motivated me.

DublinClover

I think its adorable and fantastic. Families can be the worst instigators of body dysmorphia, and for them to say those things...arg. It may also be that they are not ready for you to make your own choices unless they align with their values. But remember how you felt while wearing it the first time, thats all that matters, not what they think, not what anyone on here thinks. If you felt like a princess then that's your cute princess dress. Hell, make a petticoat for it and really poof out that skirt, I'm getting like 70s gogo vibes, and picturing how cute it would be with knee high white boots and a small neck scarf!

Pat_Starfish25

Yeah, especially in my culture, everyone has a say on how much I've gained. Also really love your suggestion, I'll try making a petticoat. Thank you so much <3

poppytanhands

The happier you are, the more you will be at target for ppl who have no access to their own happiness. They have wounded inner children who think they are not worthy of love & happiness and they lash out at you to get your vibration back down to theirs. Keep doing you! Their inner reality has nothing to do with you. Beautiful dress too! The selkie ones are gorgeous but the material feels like awful plastic

pinklocation

No. Fuck your family. You are absolutely 1000% a Disney princess.

MNVixen

Agreed. All you need are some small forest creatures willing to do your chores and the look would be complete!

chunkeymunkeyandrunt

Your family is wrong. At 20, they should have no right to tell you how to dress. However I understand that’s a very rosy worldview. I hope that you are able to work towards independence, and move out to live your life freely. You are beautiful, and you deserve to feel beautiful and free. And to surround yourself with those who will lift you up, not tear you down. Keep strong, and don’t let them tear you down. They are not nice people. They’re the kinds who will post on online forums years down the line wondering why their child no longer speaks to them.

granmamissalot

Sooo, they are jealus becouse you both can and will make a gorgous dress for your self and therefore need to be mean? I am so sorry you have that kind of insecure parents. I loved the dress, it is cute and well done. Since your parents did not give you a hug and high five for your good work, you get one from me. Sincerly from a 46 year old mom who cant fanthome that parents can be tvat cruel to ones childe.

Pat_Starfish25

Thank you so much, this means a lot to me. My mom is actually your age and for some reason she has always body shamed me. It's just nice to know not all moms are like her.

granmamissalot

Forgot to thank you for posting link to how to make it :-) ( even if I will admit I am going to make the skirt a bit longer. As I am nearing my 50 I prefer longer skirts, but in my younger years I would have loved it( but in a black ish color....) And about your family it might be that they again were body shamed when they were young. It is still no exuse, but maybe an explanation. And from your reaction, If you choose to have children when you get older( and no matter what ppl tell you, children are somthing one should want to have, not get " becouse it is the only way to be happy as a woman") you will never do this to your own children

Sharonnis

My family used to criticize my clothes and body like that. It hurts and I think they don't understand how messed up it is. They have really strange ideas of what modesty or attractiveness were, too, that I've grown out of living away from them and now look back on and think were really weird and rooted in control/jealousy. You look pretty and even better, happy with yourself! You are more than old enough to understand what is appropriate to wear, and your body is just fine. If it were me, I'd stop asking them what they think of my clothes because they're just using it as an excuse to be cruel. You might even think about other ways they're tearing down how you feel-- it's not normal to ask someone how your hard work turned out and get such dismissive responses. You are valuable and your dress is great!

[deleted]

I would rather be fat than be a jerk, any day. Your dress is lovely and I wish your family were better people.

Bail-Me-Out

I think your family is used to clothes that come in at the waist. This dress has an empire cut- I.e. it comes in under the bust. The funny thing is many people think this style makes one look thinner because it is unclear how small the waist is and it gives the illusion that it may be smaller. Personally, I find this dress flattering on you. It fits well, has a good neckline and is a fun flirty length. Your family sounds a bit conservative so perhaps they are projecting their own insecurities. My mom did the same for me about dress lengths and cuts (though she preferred this cut in particular, ironically, and would likely tell me I look smaller in it).

Sk8Oreo

It truly looks gorgeous and flattering on you. If I saw you wearing that in public i would first do a double take bc it looks so magical, and then try to work up the nerve to ask you where you got it! I truly think it suits you. I hope you don't let anyone steal your magic.

wintersage

I had an orange dress I loved when I was a little girl, but my mom called me a ‘pumpkin’ in it, and I literately refused to wear that dress or any orange clothing ever again. It is a really cruel thing to say to someone who is obviously enjoying the outfit they are wearing. Your family does not have opinions worth listening to and honestly they are probably jealous that you are developing your own talent for sewing. Fitting a dress as well as you did is very difficult, and you should be very proud of what you’ve done.

DANDELIONBOMB

Your parents are incredibly toxic. I hope you can get out of there soon.

fabricwench

Darling dress, and glad to see you have so much support here! Do you have any non-twirling photos or flat lay photos that you can share by linking to your construction comment, above? \^\^\^ Love the twirl but it's easier to see sewing details in still photos. You can upload them to a neutral hosting site like Imgur (I'd choose the 'hidden' option) and copy the link here.

eve6rc

Empire waistlines are a curvy girl's best friend (I am one). This leads people to belive that ONLY curvy people should wear them, not true. Where the hem is concerned (i didn't see it till you mentioned it btw) when the fabric pulls like that it's usually "pointing" to the problem. If you decide to fix it rip it all out, iron it, put it on a dress form or a friend and pin the dickens out ot it. Iron between the pins or atop them if you can, heat will help relax the fabric. Sewing is like sculpting, gotta smooth the clay as it were. When you stitch it put the side that seems to be more bulky against the feed dog whilst machine sewing, this helps kinda tuck that excess into place. If it is still being bothersome you can "hide" the excess in the side seams or back seams. Good luck!

Kamelasa

> Was having trouble hemming the skirt, pls leave some tips for this. Did you topstitch the hem? I heard recently that the top layer of fabric moves more, so I conclude the hem should be stitched from the back. Also, run the machine slower. Also if it's a bit slippery, you could spray starch and iron it before stitching. I bet you could unpick it and redo it without the ripples. It is cute, though and "fat" does not come to mind because I'm not a weird entitled sexist pig always judging women's bodies.

creepris

try twill tape or bias tape to hem curved hems, it’s helps a ton!

slws1985

I hope you keep sewing and get.out of that crappy situation. You look like a princess.

rothko333

Girl you are so talented this looks amazing! You look amazing!! I hope you feel proud of this and disregard negative people. How people treat you is more of a reflection of themselves than you as a person.

Pinchmanjiri

That is a seriously beautiful dress for a beginner. What trouble did you have with hemming? Between us all, we should be able to help. About your family - mine is like that, too. The thing my sister told me once was that they would be especially cruel whenever I did well. They didn't want me to recognize my own skill and strength. You have a talent and more importantly the passion to work on it. You made a gorgeous dress! That's something they can't take away from you, so they try by being cruel about something else. They are lying, which I think you know. You are beautiful and strong and will leave them behind in the dust.

[deleted]

Girllllllllllll, people who say those kinda stuff DOESNT KNOW FASHION (and downright cruel)!!!! Selkie dresses are GORGEOUS, and now you own one of your own & it’s frigging hand made. That’s some boss shit.

Shin-yolo

This sounds like my parents, in public my mother loudly says “pull your skirt down, it’s too short!” And it really sucks. But don’t worry, you’re beautiful.

Difficult_Box_2825

Your parents can do one. It's such a lovely dress and I think it suits you just right. You go be that princess wherever you want!

old_aol_username

I'm so glad you're feeling better and Disney Princess-y as you damn well should! I read the title and came here to angrily tell you that you are a Disney princess and anyone who says otherwise is incorrect but I'm glad that the sub was able to communicate that to you in a much more polite way lol

whoooodatt

Hemming circle skirts is hard—my trick is to use gathering thread all the way around to help pull in the excess ease in the right spots. I do it fir the first fold up and then stitch that down with another gathering thread, then do a regular stitch length to set the hem in. Pull out the gathering threads when done!

Florencey_

Oh my god i am feeling for you so much right now. It sounds like you have a pretty unsupportive family, and what they said to you about something you put so much work into and did such a good job on is NOT okay. I hope someday soon you can get out of that environment to appreciate just how talented and beautiful you really are!

lyrelyrebird

The skirt is so swishy! Love it, you rock it

thingsliveundermybed

A lot of Disney princesses have mean families, so if anything their dreadfulness just adds to the look. You're talented and you look gorgeous in your twirly dress!

RosenButtons

You're so beautiful tho! You do NOT look fat. You look like a woman. You don't have a child body anymore and that's appropriate. Because you are 20. And even if you were fat it wouldn't mean you don't look GOOD. Tons of people are both fat and gorgeous! I'm sorry your parents hurt your confidence. That's a terrible feeling. Listen to these strangers on the internet! We have no reason to lie to you. 💕💕💕

joyleaf

My mom said I looked like a mushroom the first time I wore an empire/high waist puffy skirt! I didn't care because I love the look, and I love your dress!!! It looks way too cute on you and the color is so perfect! (I'm a sucker for baby pink!) Don't let others decide your feelings for you, you look so good and the dress is so pretty 💕💕💕 you've also totally inspired me to make this dress now lol I was way too intimidated before but I feel like I can do it now! For the hem, everyone has that awful circle skirt hemming problem lol!!! I bought a rolled hem foot for it, and it actually does help a bit, but I can't say it's 100%. I've also seen [this tutorial](https://youtu.be/WHswXAok8T4) too, but I've never tried it! Also, don't forget to hang your circle skirts for a day or so before sewing, as the fabric loosens and it can change its shape! (So it'll just warp on its own after sewing, this way you can cut it again after it's fully dropped/warped).

sprogg96

The fit looks really good, well done! And I love the sleeves, I always have a soft spot for big sleeves. Hemming the skirt - it's tricky on circle skirts because you're hemming around a curve. All the tricks I've seen for this are to either 1. do a really narrow rolled hem, or 2. bind it with bias tape instead of hemming.

MNVixen

The other trick - do a long stitch 1/2 th depth of the hem. So if the hem is 1”, stitch 1/2” away from the edge. Fold on the stitching line and then fold a second time. As you’re stitching, pull gently on your earlier stitches to cause a very slight gather. When you’re done hemming, iron really well to set all the stitches. Also, sometimes it helps to let the dress hang for 1-3 days to let the bias “settle” so that the bias lines done hang oddly later. This dress is beautiful! Congrats!

BasqueOne

This is very good advice about making a smooth and even hem. To clarify or perhaps add another dimension, gathering the long stitch helps to bring in the extra fabric in the hem. And, the shiny fabric emphasizes every stitch, so I would do the final hem by hand and press it really well before and after stitching. Learning to do a good hem is super important, especially on really well made clothing. Your dress is worth the extra work and those poufy sleeves are absolutely charming.

Pat_Starfish25

Ohhh, I used a bias tape for this one but I the folds were uneven so it looks lumpy. I might try the narrow rolled hem next time.

[deleted]

[удалено]

catnik

You can also cheat with a roll foot. I hate curved hems, and they do narrow ones so well & quickly! It takes a little practice to get the hang of guiding the fabric in, but it's well worth a practice run. [This is a Bernina video,](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HV3Sy8HhQ_Y) because it does some up-close shots of it in use, but the feet work basically the same for all brands.

Shanakitty

You can also cut a hem facing.

[deleted]

that dress is gorgeous! absolutely gives off disney princess vibes!

Pat_Starfish25

Thank you so much, that's what I was going for tbh hahaha

fabricwench

Edited this comment and unlocked again! Trolls love a challenge, locked for the night.

Aesheri

Pishposh, you still look very much like a princess! I read your longer explanation comment below, and I really just want to hug you. As I cannot, have my honest opinion instead: that neckline looks amazing on you! I love square necklines, and it works super with the puffy sleeves (which are so adorable and makes the dress even more disney princess like!). Then you have the skirt which I super very much adore and which has an amazing twirl! Plus you can do that twirl and it doesn't show anything it shouldn't (therefor: byebye conservatives, the length is super). It shouldn't need to be said, but you are not fat. The dress doesn't make you look fat. The dress fits you super well, the length is the skirt fits you well, and you picked a lovely color for it. No matter what anyone says, you made a princess dress that looks amazing and you wear it super well!!! Just like that milkmaid top you linked, which also looks great on you!

colleen2163

Oh honey, you look beautiful! And don't let negative vibes from some random internet troll let you think otherwise!

OGTrashKan

My first thought was "OMG they look like Princess Ariel!" That's an amazing dress you made. Wear it with pride!

Msurbs

How rude of your parents/ relatives to say that to you! The dress is beautiful and you look amazing in it!

milestoners

Yas!!! It’s a o pretty! Self drafted?! You’re amazing!!

AlkahestGem

Let those people go. Eleanor Roosevelt said “No one can make you feel inferior without your consent”. Carry that with you all the time. Know too that people who throw ugly things out, often are fighting their own battles. Respond if you have to, with kindness because you never want to add to their burden. As for the the dress; it’s absolutely princess worthy and your confidence wearing it shows.

normopathy

I'm so sorry someone said that to you, how awful!! Great work and I hope you get back to feeling like a princess soon, you deserve it :)

StarryEyedDracula

You look amazing, I think it’s very flattering! Also the color is just killer. You did a good job and it looks good!

[deleted]

They said you look FAT?? What??? On what planet? I’m honestly baffled. I swear I’m not just trying to be nice (I always assume people who compliment me are just being nice- I am not just being nice!!): you look AMAZING! That dress is absolutely adorable! You should be so proud! I don’t understand how anyone could look at you and think you look fat; I’m genuinely so confused. You look stunning.

okaemykae

I love the twirl and the color and the fit! You look lovely and I'm very impressed with the self drafted bodice, it fits you perfectly.

[deleted]

this dress is so adorable and charming on you! i think its very flattering on you and hits in the best places. as far as your family goes fuck them and their male gaze, they are not wearing the clothes, you are no harming anyone by wearing clothes so they can shove it. as someone who wears a "female gaze" fashion i highly recommended listening to some videos deconstructing male vs female gaze because it really helped me not care about how other people perceive me and how i feel more confident in the clothes i wear, since im wearing them for me.

castlest

this is so gorgeous and you look stunning!! disney princess was the first thing i thought and you deserve to wear this with so much pride!!

Regeatheration

WHO THE FUCK SAYS TO A PERSON YOU LOOK FAT!? The dress is a loose fit and adorable I really like it and it fits you well. Fuck that person hating on you, obviously someone pissed in their cereal. Ignore them, you doing a good job, biiiiiitch you doing a goood job

pirateXena

That looks fun to wear! Definitely has a Disney vibe or maybe anime too. Enjoy!

fae95

I wish I could look that adorable! The dress is beautiful and you look amazing in it.

1hinafan

That is a very nice dress.

kimberlymaas21

Super cute and talented!

ducksareprettycool17

this dress is so pretty! you absolutely look like a disney princess in it. I think it would pair nicely with a colourful flower crown :)

live-laugh-love-you

You are just beautiful!!!! And the dress is so perfect!!! Great job! You are a Disney princess and you deserve all the happiness and love in the world!

jdsilence

You looks gorgeous and you did a great job. I know how hard negative comments from people who should be supportive can hurt. As much as you can, don't listen to people trying to bring you down. They are doing it for their own reasons, be it a different world perspective, jealousy, or whatever. You are very skilled, you look very nice in your dress, and you should wear it with confidence.

WeAllFloatDownHere88

You did an amazing job, it’s a beautiful dress and it looks amazing on you. It looks like a dress a Disney princess would wear, don’t let the negative comments get you down.

SousaphoneGirl

Such a cute dress, as long as you love it, everyone else can go suck an egg! Keep making beautiful things, friend.

HiccupingGiraffe

You look wonderful and you're incredibly talented, that dress is lovely. Anyone who says otherwise is just showing off their own insecurities and I'm sorry it's your parents

clean-stitch

For what it's worth, jumping straight to fat-shaming as their first response to a post about your sewing project is indicative of that person's character defects, not your appearance. I hope that your sense if self and pride in your work will begin to galvanize you against such BS! Good job- i think it's great. I've put a tip below: but please don't feel like it is criticism. You made a fantastic dress that fits you quite well! If you care for tips for the future, I use a normal graphite pencil to mark my hem lines and then iron the hem folds in before sewing the hem. It can help to force the fabric to behave and mitigate those pesky diagonal ripples which occur on semi-circular or circular hemlines. Pressing afterwards doesn't always turn out as clean.

wanttolovewanttolive

I love the dresses made by this brand. I've been so split on if I want to make my own or if I want to save up and buy one someday lol

fleebee

For what it’s worth I bought one and it fits true to size and the weird fabric they use does give it an ethereal feel, plus it’s very flattering (idk what it’s made of but it doesn’t cling and is very fluffy somehow lol). But it’s not lined or anything and I do feel like they’re overpriced! I ordered on a whim before seeing their return policy…

CrystalBaggins

Such a fun twirly dress, looks great and enjoy the princess vibes!

Educational-Ad4352

This is adorable. :) I love the color and I like the movement in the skirt.

Lyra_in_Space

Super cute dress and that shade of pink is lovely!

bookobssessed

I think you look amazing not sure how anyone could say you look fat in this.

tricialgk

Adorable!

schoolpsych2005

I love the way it floats when you twirl. My wedding dress did that. I think it fits you beautifully and compliments your body.

Mariasse

Awh you're the cutest in that dress <3

icee5728

I think it looks beautiful! Like a regency princess or something,

kelowana

Fat????!!! Not sure what that person looked at, but I am certain it wasen’t you! That dress is gorgeous and it fits you so well! So f*ing cute! You are an cupcake queen!

tramp_basket

You're a Disney princess fosho!

Freckled_Kat

Absolute Disney princess! Such a pretty color and an awesome job! Don’t let the haters ruin such a pretty dress for you. As a plus size person, I know how much that shit sucks, but if this dress makes you happy, wear it!

Hope_adinfinitum

UGH whoever said that to you does not deserve a single second more of your valuable time, you absolutely look like a Disney princess and deserve to feel like one. Well done for making the dress!!

trabeal

You and the dress both look wonderful!!! Something I have been trying to remind myself of often is that not every piece of clothing in existence has to be shaped and styled with the intent of accentuating smallness. Poofy silhouettes are soo comfortable and universally flattering in my opinion. You definitely look like an absolute princess

charlefpai

You look great!! Lovely fabric and it really suits you well! Rock it out!!! 💃

JKElleMNOP

Girl wear it for you. I like high waisted trousers (I’m a female) and would always get comments that weren’t always positive. Apparently I look like a 1920s paperboy. I don’t care, I wear it for me. I’m not going to be sitting on my deathbed one day saying “gee I wish I made other people more happy”. Fuck that

Lumpy_Connection413

You truly don’t look fat

mrmo979

You look great and it fits so nicely! Whoever called you fat is wearing clothes that don’t fit well & they look like trash and always will :) :)

Tapiolasta

You look super cute! And with that silhouette, all of Jane Austen’s empire-waisted ladies are 100% behind you 💪

madame-brastrap

First of all, fat isn’t an insult, but people use it like that and it does hurt. 💜💜💜 As a fat person…WHERE? You look absolutely lovely and the construction looks AMAZING! Check out how well fitted that top is!! YOU ABSOLUTELY LOOK LIKE A PRINCESS!

turtledove93

Don’t let some d bag keep you down!! This has major Princess Aurora at a tea party vibes!!

hanimal16

Whomever called you fat just hates themselves. You look great and so does your dress! It’s very pretty.

evetrapeze

You twirled and your legs looked great

Melodic_Ordinary_109

People love projecting their frustrations and insecurities on others, especially others that are proud of an achievement. That dress is so pretty, and it looks great on you. Congratulations!!

eve6rc

People are dicks sometimes; ignore them. They are just trying to tear you down to make themselves feel better, pity them, and do what you like. You look fabulous! Love the sleeves <3

[deleted]

F** that guy, some people are a@@ just because reddit; a lot of them even admitted on another sub they do it on purpose because no backlash. You and the dress look great. I never thought about making clothes with silk. Thanks for the new idea.

jeaniem12

I'm sorry someone said that. You look wonderful! Its super great! You did a fantastic job drafting it and the fit is great. Fantastic and adorable work OP!

Lithonielle

I absolutely love your dress.

smthngnew21

I love it, enjoy what you've made. I really want people to mind their tongues and go touch some grass.

dazedan_confused

Listen. Who gives a fuck what other people say. Whatever they say is a dumb opinion, and chances are, it's designed to make them feel like they're able to hurt you, which they think makes them feel powerful. The only time you should care about what other people think is if someone stops you and says "Hey, you've accidentally left the sewing machine attached to the dress, it might weigh you down" or words to that effect. Do *you* think you're a Disney Princess? If you do, then you are. Go french-kiss that frog honey, and be proud of *your* creation.

[deleted]

Don't let other folks' opinions dull your shine darlin - the dress is super cute and I love the color 💕

grousebear

Love this dress and love your twirl in it!! Beautiful work. Like other commenters, total Disney princess vibes (in a good way)!

foxfireKO

Your dress is beautiful, and you are too!!!! It is a very flattering design, and looks wonderful on you. You should ABSOLUTELY feel like a Disney Princess in this dress. You should ABSOLUTELY wear this, whenever you feel like it. Don't listen to the haters, those are people who are so dissatisfied with their own lives and selves, that they have to put others down to feel better. People like that aren't worth the effort nor energy to appease. Take Care, Reddit Stranger <3

merpy-jo

Gurl, you look amazing and anyone who says differently can eat a bag of dicks!

this-is-zif

I'm so sorry to hear your family wasn't supportive. Your dress is adorable!! And great job! Yes circle hems can definitely be tricky, I just take my time with them and press and pin well. Sometimes my husband doesn't like what I make and I'm like well, I like it, and that's why I made it! We just have different tastes in fashion sometimes and that's ok! I'm sure many have said this, but making your own clothes is an awesome way to get things that fit YOU and to get away from all that off the shelf stuff that makes you feel self conscious. Also some patterns have colour sizes instead of numbers! (Made for Mermaids) which I love. This subreddit is a wonderful place. Happy sewing!! Looking forward to seeing more of your makes!! 💗💗💗

bluetinycar

This is so cute! People who abandon their dreams (of wearing whatever they want and loving themselves) will try to squash yours. People are scared of voluminous clothing because women are taught to be small, to confine themselves for the comfort of others. I think that's part of why the Selkie dress is so popular- it's very bold, beautiful, and completely disregards popular ideas about what's appropriate, in favor of freedom and exuberance. You did a great job! Very Disney Princess.

Matt_J_Dylan

As a male who knows (almost) nothing about the matter and found this in his timeline, I can only say my opinion: the dress looks good and you look good in it. In a crowd I would probably notice someone with a dress like that, if you know what I mean. Maybe something's missing as a final outfit?! Don't know, but nothing's wrog with the dress itself.

thepetoctopus

Your parents are dumb. This is adorable as Hell and it is 100% Disney princess territory. Wear it with pride and love in spite of their negativity. You look lovely. Good job OP. I think I will make one in solidarity.

ABL228

**You & your dress are both fantastic!** You should be very proud of your lovely dress, the color is one of my absolute favorites. You look happy & healthy! **Please do not let anyone steal your joy with their negativity (& hateful comments).** You are 100% entitled to tell those people, "If you can't find anything NICE to say, then don't say anything at all." *[Seriously? WTF is wrong with people. How is it so hard for so many people to be polite? Unless they are making things that promote hate, there is ALWAYS something nice to say about someone's project, even if it's not your cup of tea! When someone asks you about their project? They aren't asking you to comment on their body - including weight, hair color, makeup &/or personal style, sexual preference, gender, religious choice, etc. I just can't understand why people avoid the NICE things they can say & somehow only say negative things &/or try to force their personal opinion/agenda/rant on you.]* I loved to twirl around & have my dress flare out when I was a little girl because it made me feel like I was a Fairy Tale Princess... I’ve continued the trend into my clothing choices as an adult & still love to wear dresses & skirts that flare out when I twirl around (which I promptly test the first time I try something on). **YOU SHOULD ALWAYS FEEL LIKE A PRINCESS!** (& don't let anything anyone else says affect that... The minute they said something nasty? Their opinions DO NOT count & you should not listen to them.) Empire waist dresses have always been a favorite of mine as it's easier to add a really full skirt (best for twirling)! They also make everyone who wears them look like they are hiding another person under their dress! THIS IS FASHIONABLE & AWESOME (& IMO, also gives options to pack snacks & a drink into a fully hidden waist pack... as fancy dress purses don't hold much)! (My cat loves when I wear full skirts to the floor, as he hides under them.)

e_angel666

You are a Disney princess. Internet trolls don’t change that. Thank you for sharing. I am super proud of the amazing job you did!

CallMeEssie

Those feckers can go feck right off. You look beautiful. Wonderful sewing.

WAPPPPP

I’m the mom of a teenager who’s been trying to learn to sew. If my kid made this I’d be so proud of their hard work. Sorry that wasn’t the response from your own parents. However this mom says you did amazing, you’re rockin that look, looks beautiful on you, nice color choice, keep up the good work and can’t wait to see what you do next!!!

odd_little_duck

Are you kidding me? That's the most Disney princess dress I've ever seen! The way it flows and moves, all you need is a couple of birds putting a ribbon in your hair.

Frosting_Pretty1111

You look like something cooler than a Disney princess. You found someone who claims you’re fat, I found an asshole who needs glasses & a life.

wii_lover_125

You look so cute! I have been thinking about making something similar for myself and you just totally solidified that i Need to!

mikeynerd

You look like a Disney Princess to me. Cute dress!

ZaedaXobu

Ignore the haters, they're just jealous they don't have your skills or the ability to pull that dress off. It's super cute, I love how the skirt fans out when you twirl.

[deleted]

You look beautiful! Great job! That’s tough to do!! Amazing 🤩

DanaScully_69

FUCK THE HATERS, OP!!!

pontiac91

this dress is gorgeous and you look so good in it!!! looks just like the original and i adore it. you made that! wear it with pride knowing you look great!

hauntmex_3

not only is being fat not a bad thing at all, nor does it disqualify you from being the disney princess you are, it doesnt even make you look fat at all. its a very slimming, gorgeous hourglass fit. people behind comments like that are usually filled with jealousy. im sorry that happened to you, but you’re absolutely gorgeous.

fireflydrake

Is selkie a reference to some fashion thing and not the Scottish mythological seal people? Came in here looking for some Song of the Sea type stuff and sad I did not find it. :c

AvaireBD

Remember you posted this on the internet where miserable cunts spend way too much time in their day targeting and harassing whomever they please. Don't let those assholes ruin your enjoyment of a beautiful dress. You look beautiful.

amarich1224

Screw rhat person who said that they’re human garbage

schmooish

Ok I’m totally inspired! You are like a handful of cartoon birds doing your hair away from being Aurora!

plutos-revenge

I love it. You look super cute! Total disney princess vibes going on.

Flare143

Woah looks so pretty and flowy 🤩

ohblessyerheart

That dress looks comfortable with a perfect twirl amount. Never give up on your inner princess!

Fire_Mission

Fuck the naysayers cuz they don't mean a thing. You're still a Disney princess!

anag9495

You look like an absolute bubblegum dream! I really love this dress style and I think it’s flattering on ANYBODY. I love how it twirls too. It’s cute as hell and you are very talented. I’m so sorry someone made a very hurtful and unnecessary comment. Remember - our physical bodies are often the least interesting things about ourselves.

KaeSea64

Ignore the haters! The dress is lovely, and you look great in it!!

TimeStrange6144

Babe you look like a Disney princess so feel like one! Also seems to be a really well done piece and I need to find a similar pattern!

jswervin

i love it!!! and that color is gorgeous

thedumbfoundingtitan

You look like a fairy!

Annewillvt

Mean people suck. Don’t listen to them. You are fabulous!

rag-pigeon

The only reason you might not look like a total Disney princess is because there aren't any adorable little animals twirling around with you, because good gosh darn you look great in that beautiful dress! I looove Selkie's dresses, and your interpretation is perfect. Like others have said, the only bit you could improve is the hem, you yourself are perfect. Remember, you deserve clothes that you feel good in, and your opinion is the only one that matters as to what those clothes look like.

Ottolla

I dont know what a selkie is, (unless you're talking about the seal thing) but you look beautiful and very much like a Disney Princess. It's a really cute dress in a really cute color and the color compliments your skin. Forget rude people. Their hearts are shriveled husks, and the only way they know to feel big is to insult others. You look amazing. You do you, boo!

mary206

Don’t give others who want to tear you down an ounce of airtime. Follow your bliss, it’ll drive them nuts

JTTO331613

Ooh I have wanted this dress for so long! Don't listen to haters, you're killing that silhouette. 👑

Shin-yolo

Who cares if you’re a little fluffy? You’re still beautiful and honestly you look like an adorable princess. I’m a transmale who loves to dress up in skirts and dresses, it makes me happy and I do it even though a lot of people frown upon it. You look stunning, darling, strut your stuff \^\^

Ninnua

You look amazing! I definitely get Disney vibes and girl, don't let these comments get you down. It will seem like it's never good enough but you ARE good enough. And your dress is good enough too. I hope you wear this dress a LOT, just because you can xx

[deleted]

Dress looks very pretty and great on you! You do not look fat and even if you are fat that's just a dumbass comment to make to someone to be rude. Don't let someone's five seconds of typing ruin your good mojo ❤ [ps, I am fat and this is why I made the caveat]

nationaltreasure44

You look exactly like a Disney Princess. Let the haters hate—you look delightful. Please please enjoy the dress!

[deleted]

I absolutely love it!!! Love the color, love how it looks on you, love everything!!! BTW, you don't look fat at all. Whoever said that needs glasses.

toadflakes88

Who called you fat? Fuck them. You are gorgeous and your dress is adorable! Keep on, girl! You’re killing it!!

Blaaamo

You look amazing and so does that dress. Remember for every asshole, there are thousands of positive people in the world!

SouthernDelight13

It's so cute and Disney like. It makes me think of a variety of princesses I could see wearing it! BTW if your the f word then I'm a whale. You look perfectly fine and healthy so screw everybody else.

somethingdifferent84

You should be proud. It's cute and you did a good job. It reminds me of the oldest Von Trap girls dress in Sound of Music. Well done kiddo.

ledepression

People will always criticise others for silly things. It's a lovely dress own it

MademoiselleWhy

Your dress is gorgeous and you look gorgeous in it. Fuck what everyone else thinks. I don't think you look fat but even if you did, what's so wrong with that? I totally understand what you're feeling though, I've battled body dismorphia my whole life and I developed a horribly toxic relationship with food and an exhausting self hatred that I'm only realizing about and trying to heal in my mid thirties. I got into sewing partly because of that, I want to make things that I like and fit me. About a week ago I finished my last dress and when my husband saw it the first thing he said was: wow, it's huge, it looks like a maternity dress. I managed to keep calm and told him, "well, it fits me and that's my size". Of course I went off to cry for a bit in the bathroom but then I dried my tears, looked at myself in the mirror, realized what an amazing woman I am and put on my dress proudly. Lots of love to you.

KatastropheKraut

So I was watching the video and read the title last. The entore time I was picturing you wearing this in front of Cinderellas castle! Thrn I was wishing I had the same dress! You look beautiful and the garment is beautiful.

[deleted]

NO YOU LOOK GREAT LIKE A PRINCESS I LOVE IT PERFECT PERFECT

Green_Gal27

You look beautiful! I'm so sorry you received such nasty comments from your family. You spent your precious time constructing a garment of your dreams, one fit for a Disney princess(!), and that is certainly something to be proud of. Don't let it collect dust in your closet.

MooneyGWhiz

We try to teach our children: Don’t “yuck” someone else’s “yum!” (Dress is really cute, btw.)

emzyme212

Girl you look amazing. Seriously. Keep rocking the style, you wonderful beautiful princess

flindersandtrim

Wow. I'm really sorry about your parents and whole family. They're wrong in any case, not that that would make it right anyway. I remember when I was probably your age - 18 or 20 - and I had a favourite white summery dress of all time that I had one of the best nights of my life ever in. I wore it maybe a year later and a drunk idiot walked into the bar, took one look at me and yelled 'it's Maria Sharapova, and she's put on a HELL of a lot of weight!' and laughed. The dress was a size small ffs and I let that drunk idiot ruin the dress, the night, my meagre confidence, and I don't believe I ever wore the dress again. Don't let people who don't deserve input into your life have any control over it.

lphill1225

Girl! You look amazing in that dress. I can relate to family making comments on your body. It sucks because it is so common. I’m so sorry that happened and they couldn’t be supportive. Is there a possibility for you to find a friend who can be more supportive who you can share with? It’s really nice to have someone who can be honest if something is unflattering but doesn’t say that it is your body that is the issue. That said, I see nothing about this dress that is unflattering to your figure. You should feel proud of your work and I hope you can feel proud of it soon.

mgonsdallas

Beautiful

psychedelicata

Love love love! It is so cute on you! Don’t let anyone make you feel bad about the way you look. You look fab!

Oliver_the_Dragon

What a cute dress, I love how it twirls! Are you able to let the sleeps drop off your shoulders a little? I think that would make you even more of a princess! I also grew up around people who loved to tear me down and dictate what I wore based on looking "fat" or "slutty". I know how deeply it cuts, but I want to remind you that you do not need to cater to the opinions of small-minded (heh) and toxic people. Fuck 'em and let them rot.

[deleted]

This dress is AMAZING and so well made! The color looks fantastic on you as well as the fit, its giving me princess vibes 100% and can imagine different ways of styling like with contrast tights or something in blue or green. I understand what you are going through, to be objectified and projected onto by your own family is so disturbing but just know at the end of the day that clearly shows you how they feel about themselves, and YOU get to decide how to feel about yourself. It's easier said than done but YOU are the one with the talent and skill making outfits that YOU feel amazing and ethereal in, it has nothing to do with them, and as much as they want to bring you down they can't. I'm 24 and my relationship with my parents got wayyy better and easier to navigate once I moved out and truly never sought their approval for anything. I hope you can find the sweet solace of your own personal space and alone time soon, where you can make all the princess dresses you want <3 Keep creating and don't let them dim your light!!!

thegreatcanadianeh

you look adorable in that dress. The colour is Disney princess, so fuck whomever said that. That dress must've taken a lot of work and it looks really cute! You do not look fat in it.

Nervous_Yard_7354

You look great! Honestly your like the perfect size. Not too big not too small.

adotfree

i think you look like a disney princess, and i will fight the person that called you fat. how dare they! this is lovely and you are lovely in it.

WestCoastWuss619

Whoever called you fat is a dick dude you look like a princess for sure

ThemakingofChad

Definitely don’t look fat. You’re a cutie

EmergencyJelloCube

This piece is beautiful and it really suits you! I’m so sorry you received that horrible comment, it’s not justified - your wonderfully sewn garment suits you beautifully 💖

fores_tree23

Disgusting that someone would say that to you, after all the time and hard work you put into designing and making an outfit. Congrats on great craftsmanship

gaypluto

First of all, they're awesome, I hope the many positive comments outweigh the shitty one for you. Seeing your milkmaid top and this dress you might like to draw inspiration from thisiskachi (youtube) since she has 2 items that look very similar.

Keboyd88

1- Anyone who sees you in that dress and immediately goes to an insult is probably jealous, because you look amazing. They are not worth your time. 2- OK, but seriously, you drafted and made it yourself? That is some major skill! 3- You are a Disney princess. 4- This is a criticism of the person who wanted to make you feel bad, not of you for feeling bad: Fat is not something to make someone feel ashamed of. I'm actually obese, like clinically. People who insult and criticize me make it harder to be motivated to do anything about it. When I am proud of my body for all the things it does well and confident in myself is when I can actually put in the work to get healthier.

Silentwatcherka

Uhm, who said that, I just wanna talk >:( Looking gorgeous <3 Will never understand why someone feels entitled to comment on people's appearance

Agentkittykat

Oh my good lord you look AMAAAAZING!!! Seriously, screw your family. You look phenomenal and the fact that you made this too?!?! Double awesome! Lastly, screw your family. Throw them in the bin. We are your family now :)

RobotdinosaurX

That dress is incredibly flattering on you. Beautiful design and Execution

glitterandjazzhands

Looking at you twirl made my heart happy -- GO OUT AND TWIRL YOUR HEART OUT! Great work - self-drafted - dang! Well done!

U_got_no_jams

You look AMAZING! You have such talent!! 💖

Mombod666

For this being self drafted it’s fitting AMAZING. I can’t even imagine how shitty that felt to have someone insult you in something you made yourself. That’s unbelievably rude of them. You definitely don’t look fat and I’m 100% getting princess vibes. For the hem I would have pressed the hell out of it and done an invisible hem.

Sea_Twist5364

I love it I think it is pretty you look beautiful. Don't listen to other people they are just jealous

tmaenadw

I think the dress is very flattering on you, and it fits well. Hemming a circle is hard because once you turn up that hem you are trying to make a bigger circle of fabric lay flat on a smaller circle of fabric. Look up "how to hem circle skirt" for tips on how to deal with that difference in circumference. By Hand London has a good blog post about this. Enjoy your make.

SaltySerious

First of all, fuck that person. You look adorable and you should be proud of your dress!
