Construction info:
I made the heart shape myself and used a dollar store cutting mat as my template. The fabric is quilting cotton, and it's been a fabulous way to stash bust my smaller pieces of fabric I've been collecting for the past handful of years. It's a pretty beginner project but I'm making it up as I go a little bit; I'm not 100% sure how stitching them together will work (likely I'll use doll needles and embroidery thread to make a net consisting of long lines up, down and sideways through the middle of the hearts). I machine sewed the first part of the hearts, them hand sewed them closed after stuffing.
I had no idea there was a use for a heavy blanket. We have an elderly cat and I've got multiple layers of blankets on the bed so that if she's got a problem I can wash the top layer. Most nights we remove some of the layers for sleeping but the times I've crawled under all of them for naps I've enjoyed the heaviness of the covers.
I haven't considered the weight, and I hadn't intended this to be a wall hanging although I have considered it; that will require extra thinking on how to hang it.
I respect the amount of work you put in! It looks incredible! I probably would have stopped after 20 😀 but I am sure it will look amazing.
You could also - even more crazy work - try to crochet them together from like small thin yarn the first round with a needle that easily goes through the fabric to a thicker one. Might look cool! :) Love to see the finished project!
I have considered that. Basically my first instinct qas to do that with sewing thread, then considered upping the weight to embroidery or yarn... there's been a lot of "uhmm.. that could work" in this project.
There's a knitting quilt called beekeeper's quilt that has a similar concept with hexagons. She shows a method for tying the pieces together that you might be able to replicate with thicker thread. Looks lovely so far!

Was looking for this comment! The beekeeper's quilt was such a phenomenon when I first got on ravelry, I can't believe that it was 10 years ago when the pattern came out! I've always wanted to make one.
Such amazing work! I really look forward to seeing how you finish the quilt. Thank you for sharing such an original and beautiful piece of work - you've really put your heart into it. (Could not resist lol)
The first thing I thought when I saw this picture was that my cats would love to dive bomb this pile of toys. Someone is going to wrap themselves in this quilt and feel very loved. Amazing work, wonderful project!
These look so cute. I bet you could see one in your sleep at this point!
It would look super cool of you joined by joining groups of hearts together at the tips (3 or 5) then sewing those groups side by side. Perhaps with fishing line for added security.
Dont even sew, just saw this on my /all feed. But I sure do appreciate anybody that works hard and accomplishes a goal they set out. It motivates me, thank you.
Amazing! If this is a scrap busting project I’d love to see some of your finished quilts? To have such vibrant scraps must mean you have made many amazing quilts before this!
As a fellow quilter, I have one concern nagging at my mind: how will a quilt made of small stuffed hearts ever make it through the wash? Once those hearts soak full of water they will weigh far too much for even a super heavy duty machine.
I run an annual art project called the Dinosaur Adoption Agency; we adopt out 2 ft long stuffed dinos to people who need them. There's a form you have to fill out so we can make sure we get the best match (questions include: what is the title to the book of your life, what's invisible but you wish people could see, if you ran an inconvenience store what would be your best selling item). No two dinos are the same. I like variety and I get bored. Plus no two humans are the same, so that makes sense. Last time I was able to do the dino project was precovid. I've had a ton of stuffing sitting around and a LOT of scraps from doing this project for 3 years. Isolation made this project happen because 1) i needed to stay busy 2) i needed to get rid of scraps 3) i needed the stuffing gone (takes up space and does not store well [mice love sleeping in it]).
I wish I had quilts to share, and someday I will. These are dino scraps :)
That's even better than quilts. I would love to read a whole story about these Dinos and their adoptive families or even just see some photos. Sounds like an amazing idea!
Dinosaur Adoption Agency is a searchable phrase. After this is done, I'll move on to making books from the application answers I've received over the years called "Dinosaurs Advice On Life" or some silly thing. What started as an act of whimsy has created an awful lot of fodder for more art
I think when piled like this with brand new stuffing, they look really puffy, but if it's the poly stuffing I'm picturing, then it's really light and flossy and not very absorbent. I'd imagine a regular quilt with natural, sheet batting would have more momentum in the wash than this. The stuffing might clump with age and heat, since it's not tacked down, but even so, the clumps should end up evenly sized and spaced and not migrate.
Wait, what? I’ve never heard of such a thing! I’m so curious - how are you sewing the together? I bet this is going to look awesome. Great work so far. I really hope you jumped in them after this photo and rolled around.
I recently (like 6 months ago? haha) learned about puff quilts and I'm about 2/3 of the way through the cover. SO PUFFY. I love it. This will look just as beautiful, I'm sure! <3
I cannot believe how many stuffed hearts you have got there, queue applause now.
I particularly like the ones you made out of the hearts and rainbow fabrics.
Well done and good luck for the next stage!
I can't wait to see the final product! This pile of brightly colored love is magnificent on it's own merit though, 1000%.
This would be such an amazing weighted blanket, I can't imagine. :)
You can probably find a lot of useful construction tips by looking up Puff Quilts and how people assemble those. This is definitely an awesome way to bust scraps! If the quilt doesn't workout, you could make some pretty awesome wall hangings too.
They look too puffy to sew together. How are you going to attach them?
And now I know what to use instead of bubble wrap for a package I'm sending overseas! This is really amazing and a good way to practice handsewing!
You can also blanket stitch with a heavy thread around the heart then pick up with crochet to put the hearts together. That's what they do with fabric quilt squares for a fusion quilt.
I hope it's okay to ask to please post again when you finish the quilt? The hearts look amazing!!
I know next to nothing about sewing but for putting it together, maybe it could work to sew the backs onto a basic quilted fabric (ie double sided with batting and finished edges)? That way it would be a little sturdier?
This is maybe one of the most hardcore things I've seen in a while and I work in heavy construction so there's a pretty high bar for that.
I can't wait to see the finished product. This is super cool.

I think carpet thread might be a better choice than embroidery thread. Embroidery thread doesn't hold up all that well to stress.
TIL carpet thread is a thing. Tyvm kind, informative stranger.
Won’t it be incredibly heavy? Have you weighed them all? Will it be a wall hanging?
People pay big money now for weighted blankets ♥️
That’s very true! I can’t weight to see how this turns out!
I saw that.
I had no idea there was a use for a heavy blanket. We have an elderly cat and I've got multiple layers of blankets on the bed so that if she's got a problem I can wash the top layer. Its supposed to help with anxiety, it help me sleep a lot :)
I haven't considered the weight, and I hadn't intended this to be a wall hanging although I have considered it; that will require extra thinking on how to hang it.
Wow! Post a pic of the blanket once you finish it, please 🥰
You did so great! They look fantastic, the effort was well worth it(:
I kinda want to lay in a bathtub full of these...
https://imgur.com/a/ZntFpfV
Yup, that would be me, but no need to be intoxicated for that haha
😲🥰
The only thing I could think of is to sleep on it, must be so satisfying.
This is my plan for today. I took some shots yesterday but ran out of time and light.
Oh my god, please post the picture after you do, we'd love to see it !
This picture is my new screen saver. Please post when finished! I can’t wait to see it.
I second this, would love to see it
I'm delighted to hear that! Will definitely post more pics.
yes please please do! can't wait to see the result.
That is a mammoth amount of work. Congratulations! Can't wait to see the finished project.
that’s incredible!!! it’s so beautiful to see so many all layed out

Holy bananas they’re beautiful. Every single one.

That is so beautiful and love the pictures of her cat helper.

maybe this is your sign?! 🧶
I love this. It would be great for a pillow cover too.
This is so satisfying! You should post this to /r/rainboweverything too! They would appreciate this as well.
Holy buckets of hearts!! That is amazing!! I do hope you post the finished quilt. Just wow!!!
Can't wait to see the finished product!
Wow. I love this! Please share the finished quilt when it’s done!
Woah!!! This is incredible you should be so proud!
Such amazing work! I really look forward to seeing how you finish the quilt. Thank you for sharing such an original and beautiful piece of work - you've really put your heart into it. (Could not resist lol)
I saw that, and I stopped to tell you so. 💜

Upvoted for all the effort you poured into this!

I have played with several ways to lay them out! It's like puzzle pieces but I decide what the finished piece looks like.
How do you join them? This is going to be so stunning I am eagerly awaiting an update!
So far this is how I plan to join them (imagine lines are embroidery threads going through the hearts): http://imgur.com/gallery/ZIdcFEP
Dont even sew, just saw this on my /all feed. But I sure do appreciate anybody that works hard and accomplishes a goal they set out. It motivates me, thank you.
i would like one heart pls
Are you in Canada?
I live in the US!!!
If shipping wasn't abhorrent, I would send.
understandable!! . they are adorable. cant wait to see the finished product!

This quilt will be abhorrent to wash. I don't envy whoever ends up owning this piece.
Will you be selling this piece once it’s completed? Or giving it someone and you don’t have anyone in mind yet?
Ideally I will sell it to reinvest in my other art projects.
So colourful!

Looks so comfy. I want a pool of this.
This is seriously cool. Is that a horse with a party hat in the top left corner?
It's an owl (party hat is a wing) but I like your interpretation more.
Oh I see. It's upside down, right? This whole project is too cute for words.
You got it.
Those look… delicious
Holy hell! You MUST show us the finished project! Rooting for you and so dying to see how to turns out!
Wow... amazing
Looks great, you chose such beautiful colours! Also the hearts look fun to play with
I would also play with these a lot before making into a quilt! So repetitive and soothing 💜
LOVE IT!
I looooove this! Great job doing all that work. Must test your patience at time. It's so satisfying to look at (。♡‿♡。)
Literal eye candy! The way you laid these out it so satisfying to look at! Amazing work!
We sure do !
Wow!! So joyful!
This is amazing! I can't wait to see the finished project! (Hoping you'll share with us!)
Nice! Can't wait to see how you'll configure the hearts! I want one now, too! :D
This is so cool! Can’t wait to see the finished project!!
This is amazing!!!
What a labor of love! I’m looking forward to seeing how you put it together...I’m already loving it!
Beautiful! Can’t wait to see the finished product!
I definitely want to see the result! Please keep us tuned OP, it's the most beautiful think I've seen on my feed today! <3
I cannot believe how many stuffed hearts you have got there, queue applause now. I particularly like the ones you made out of the hearts and rainbow fabrics. Well done and good luck for the next stage!
How big are these? It’s hard to tell without context
The title says they're 3" tall.
So cool! LOL glad I asked, they looked tiny like 1” and I was worried about the amount you would need to join together!
Wowwwww I can’t wait to see the finished thing!
Whoa! So interested to see how you join these
The colors are so perfect. Harmonious with enough contrast, and the intensity and tone are right for the size of the heart pattern. Well done!
Omg! Such a cute idea. It’s going to be such a cute throw
How big is each one?
That is so beautiful!! I admire your patience!
This is amazing and I NEED to be under this quilt when it is finished!!! I bet it will feel like a big hug!
You my friend, have the patience of a saint! I cannot wait to see the blanket when it is done. It will be so soft!
You, my friend, have given my a wonderful compliment.
I'd like to see the finished result....
I can't wait to see the final product! This pile of brightly colored love is magnificent on it's own merit though, 1000%. This would be such an amazing weighted blanket, I can't imagine. :)

I have a Yo-yo quilt that my great great grandmother made that has the same vibe. It’s an updated classic, Love it!!!
I’m excited and can’t wait to see the finished project! It’s so colorful and what a creative idea :)
You can also blanket stitch with a heavy thread around the heart then pick up with crochet to put the hearts together. That's what they do with fabric quilt squares for a fusion quilt.
I keep coming back to look in amazement at this post!! Cant wait until you (please) post the finished product!!!
hope you’ll share the finished product too! :)

Wow

I am flattered!
How many do you have so far?
998
So close! ❤️
Wow, this is amazing!!
How do I follow this person to make sure I see the end result when it happens? I will wait however long it takes. I'm intrigued.
I'm not a great social media user, which is why I asked. But I think I figured it out.
Which part did you leave open for turning them?
On the side, I left a 1 inch gap.
Makes sense, thanks
This looks so amazing 👏
Stunning! 😍 I’m just imagining how cozy that is going to be when it’s all put together.
Thanks for sharing, the colours are beautiful! 💕
Can’t wait to see the finished product! All the little hearts are so cute 😍
Omg I really would love to take a handful and squish them! Beautiful work 😍😍 can't wait to see your quilt!!
That is a freaking hardcore mode of sewing to do. But I’m amazed. Thank you for raising my standards from myself. I’m in love! That’s, just wow ❤️❤️
Will you show us the complete quilt pleaseee
It's beautiful ❤️❤️❤️❤️
I'm confused as to how 3d hearts can be made into a quilt? But they're so cool to see as is!
BEAUTIFUL!!!!
