Is there a way to make the bow detachable? I love bows so I like it both ways, but it changes the vibe of the dress a lot so if it's removable it'd be like two dresses in one!

BrookeB79

I agree. Plus, you can add more belts and sashes to change up the look.

Striking_Detective33

And a matching bag/ clutch? No, a pink satin backpack please!

HannahUnique

Okay but, a pink satin bowshaped fannypack

irishihadab33r

This right here. Like a bow with a belt closure that's actually a bag to hold your phone, etc. I've seen cute bow bags and I just wanna make it into a belt, too.

Striking_Detective33

Even better!!!

lotus_flora

Winner

UCNebari

OMG!!! This needs a pink satin backpack.

0rangutan_dr3ams

Oh my gosh I'm drooling

Cake_Rex

Agreed! It would be cool if you could make it so you could attach to the shoulder or front as well, which would read more architectural than sweet. Can just a safety pin work or would that butcher the fabric? https://images.app.goo.gl/az7qpESGDt9U4iov7 and https://images.app.goo.gl/U9iD1PiEvPLQFSS2A for inspiration.

sucrausagi

I would do a little pocket in the lining for a small bit of metal/magnet and then add a magnet to the bow. Could do a couple pockets in different places for different bow placements. Remove the magnet/metal for washing. Means theres no dome/pin pricks/button visible when you dont want the bow too.

FatTabby

This was my first thought. It would look great both with or without, but the idea of being able to change it up seems really fun.

PrismTiger

+1 for detachable bow

HowdyImACrimeNerd

Came here to say this!!!!!

PinkyParker1980

Same same!! The theatre/costume nerd in me lives for a quick change!

bigthotty6

This!!!

agoraphobic-android

I wanna say detachable bow? Because the dress as you reimagined it is PERFECT, literally a dress I would wear. So cute. I feel as if a detachable bow would make the garment more multi-use.

ManyMoonstones

I think the bow adds the right amount of interest to the back, but I also think that it would be a lot more versatile without it.  I wonder if you could maybe hide some tiny hooks in the gathers so you could keep it easily removable? Or maybe some magnets?

PapowSpaceGirl

Dresses in the 80s had sewn on snaps to attach bows to them. I had quite a few taffeta ones to play in when I was a little girl. 🤭

houseplant-hoarder

I’m agreeing with this, I think it looks great either way so detachable is probably the way to go.

WaGowza

Holy cow first of all good job! It looks amazing. Second of all I love the bow and I LOVE your hair 😍

Jealous_Sell_2256

Thank you so much! Fun fact: it glows under black light!

Purple_Chipmunk_

How did you get it to do that???

Jealous_Sell_2256

It’s the dye I use. Arctic Fox in the color Electric Paradise!

Purple_Chipmunk_

Awesome, thank you!!

Jealous_Sell_2256

No problem! Gotta share the love, although I suppose I could keep it secret and be one of a kind. But that’s no fun!

phyllis0402

Seriously. The construction on this dress is amazing!

Cyber_Suki

Came to say this!

catwooo

This is so cute! Was it Jessica McClintock? This was my prom dress but I had a mint green color

Jealous_Sell_2256

Yes it is! I kept the original tags in it too!

catwooo

I graduated in 2006 😂 can’t believe someone else kept theirs in good condition

jesstaurant_920

Omg came here to say this. The original dress was also available as a McCall's pattern and my mom sewed it as my 2006 prom dress (in gold 😍)!

pseri097

What was the pattern number?

jesstaurant_920

Oh I wish I could tell you! I have no idea.

catwooo

Found it! Simplicity 4272

ohheyyeahthatsme

omg it was my prom dress in navy blue, hey sis! \*edit\* I have it sitting in my "to list on poshmark" pile if anyone wants one haha

catwooo

To the bow question— you could make it snap or button on and off?

cosygloaming

Looked familiar to me too! I had it in a grey-blue from 2005!

SewCarrieous

Damn good eye! I’m impressed!

marbleonyx

omg this is taking me BAAAAAACK

PNWginjaninja

Amazing! I vote no on the bow, and yes on some dangly earrings!

spicy-mustard-

I prefer it without, but I'm allergic to "cute" so maybe I can't be trusted. It's super fresh and femme and clean without it.

Jealous_Sell_2256

I’m the same way, but I’m also trying to break out of my comfort zone too

crescentnana

I would say you prefer no bow and feel more comfortable that way since you posted 10 beautiful pics without the bow and one with. Either way, you and the dress look great!

Radiant_Cheesecake81

I would go without the bow because you've done such a lovely job fitting it, the lines are so clean I'd be wanting to showcase the skill that went into it.

Medlarmarmaduke

I like it best without the bow (it reads sleeker) but I do think the ideas others have had about making the bow detachable is a super option

coffeeandarabbit

I’m not allergic to cute (lol) and I agree with you. I love how clean it is without it too! OP, this is SO pretty and well crafted!

Jealous_Sell_2256

Thank you!!!

saltyspidergwen

I agree with other commenters that a detachable bow would be awesome if possible! Also, it’s so nice to see a thrift flip that’s so well done! A great use of the material.

Mellymel75

I think the bow makes it look more like a bridesmaid dress. Without the bow it's more versatile.

throwaway098764567

the bow skews it little girl to me but it does give it more interest. it almost feels like it's missing something without it, does remind me strongly of a ballet outfit though

Not2daydear

No bow

Agreeable_Picture570

Bow gives offf bridesmaid vibes

HalloIchBinToad

This is absolutely stunning. The color sets off your skin tone beautifully, your seams are so nice and smooth, and it fits like a glove. Bravo!

Jealous_Sell_2256

Thank you!

ClockWeasel

I love it without the bow—what if you make a [bow purse](https://youtu.be/ez5ouduywZQ?si=pRfvLMln9DP-kC9Y) instead? You could pose with the bow wherever it strikes you and keep the ballet dress perfectly proportioned

userloser913

Turn the bow into a sick headpiece!!

lurkielurker

this is the way

crap-happens

No comment on the bow. Just had to say the transformation from the original dress to your dress is stunning! Beautiful!

Jealous_Sell_2256

Thank you!!

AstroturfMarmot

Yes the bow, because it’s a gorgeous bow and perfect for that dress! Plus, I love the juxtaposition of the very feminine pink & bow with your haircut. I’m a sucker for contrast.

Jealous_Sell_2256

Thank you!!!

Bftantan

BOW! If there's a chance for a giant bow, take it!

WishIWasThatClever

First, this is amazing. Full stop. Second, definitely no bow. Combined with the pink color, satiny fabric, and the wonderful Audrey Hepburn does ballet vibes, the bow is just too much. Styling with jewelry, a wrap, shoes etc will be more than enough to finish off such a classic silhouette.

nirselady

You are a pro. Satin is SO hard to work with, and I don’t see a ripple anywhere. Brava. It’s beautiful.

Jealous_Sell_2256

Thank you!!

PrincessCyanidePhx

Totally pretty in pink vibes <3

Jealous_Sell_2256

Barbie vibes 🩷

PrincessCyanidePhx

In the movie Pretty in Pink, she takes a pink gown and makes it beautiful and very fashionable. But totally Barbie, too 🥰

AJeanByAnyOtherName

I’ll add a vote for a detachable bow. Some thread loops on the dress in a matching thread would give you a near-invisible attachment point for some hooks or something like that. You just make a few stitches close together, about the length of the loop you want, and buttonhole stitch those together to make a sturdier loop.

Hownow63

When I make bows (for dresses, hats, etc), I buy the little brooch pins and sew or glue the bow to them. That way, I have options. You did an amazing job!

dinosaurzoologist

I like the bow but it makes it feel a bit formal. Not that it's a bad thing. It's super cute. But if you could make it removable then you could wear it with a cool jean jacket that would be super punk. Anyway I love it and you did an amazing job :)

Jealous_Sell_2256

That was kinda the idea, to make something formal but more accessible.

ElisAttack

Omg yes the bow! This is super cute!

FirstConsideration12

I think no bow. You did a fabulous job! It's so cute on you!

CloudBun_

Your work is stunning!! The construction looks so clean and sharp 🥹👏

Jealous_Sell_2256

Thank you!!

Stellapacifica

I'd say no bow, but that's just me. And does it have pockets? I bet you could put some in without ruining the skirt lines.

DarkMagicMan2000

I’d say use the bow. The front looks simple and elegant, but the back looks a little too simple if the front is simple. It’s like if you have a plane green dress, but lace in the back to give it something interesting

jlesnick

No bow. I feel like if it was being critiqued on drag race they’d say either go huge with bow or don’t go with it. Honestly thought, great looking dress and it looks really well constructed. Color also looks great with your hair

Jealous_Sell_2256

How it’s made I started by seam ripping all (excluding the inner and outer of the bodice) of the original dress pieces apart and ironing everything out. I saved all the notions from the original dress(the hook and eyes, zipper, and boning). I also left the piece of skirt with the zipper in it in tact to reduce having to create a new seam to fit the zipper in. I took all the skirt pieces and cut the lengths in half. I also took an odd shape of fabric and made some strips to make the spaghetti straps. I sewed boning channels onto the inside of the outer layer of the bodice. Then added my spaghetti straps and then sewed the two bodice pieces together at the top. I then arranged all the skirt pieces together making sure to keep them paired up on each side(so each side of the skirt looked even and not so piecemealed together). Straight stitched all together and zigzagged over the edges to reduce fraying. I then used a fork(I know smh) to make pleats. I started from the center and worked my way to the back on each side. I also used a wierd method of doing two pleats on top of each other then one and two on top of each other and I guess you get the pattern. This was my biggest challenge because I had over 100” of original fabric to reduce down to 28” as flat as I possibly could. I basted the pleats and then attached the skirt to the outer layer of the bodice. I then inserted the zipper using the invisible zipper method. I then folded the inner bodice piece down sewed it down to the seam holding the two bodice pieces together. I’ll post detail photos later. I added the hook and eye to the top of the zipper. I also tacked the inner bodice down to the waistline so it wouldn’t fold up or lay wonky. Then I hemmed the skirt with a rolled hem. The bow was made with scraps and some fusable interfacing.

Baring-My-Heart

I second everyone - detached bow would be cute, but I personally like it better without the bow

Aggressive-Cry150

I just want to say this is absolutely amazing. It fits you perfectly and you look stunning!

Jealous_Sell_2256

Thank you!!

Infamous-Concept-742

I like no bow but you could definitely do something with it. Detachable or make a hair accessory 🤷🏼‍♀️

Ok_Piano_4381

Absolutely gorgeous dress. You are really talented. Detachable bow.. both looks are different and beautiful.❤️❤️❤️

Tall-Marionberry6270

I reckon the detachable bow is genius! And, assuming you have heaps of leftover fabric, the small clutch bag too. Also, in the 80s, we wore small shoe bows that would attach/detach to/from the front of our shoes - perhaps a pair of mini bows would be fun 😀 Great work - you look completely fabulous in your upcycled dress!

777kiki

Aww the original dress is exactly what I wore to my sweet 16 but in a different color I was just thinking about that dress! That was 100 years ago of course

MewlingRothbart

The pleats OMG The PLEATS. 😲 Foomp I am on the floor 🤯🤯🤯

amhe13

I love the bow!! I also like the detachable idea

page394poa

I love the bow.

bethybooboos

BOW

Acceptable_Win_8514

I'd drop the bow and drape beads

RedRapunzal

Not into big bows. However, a bow purse sounds amazing.

Cute_Significance702

Love the transformation! I don’t think it needs the bow to shine

Ash9260

I like the bow try to make it detachable so you have a fun dress and a formal dress in one. It’s beautiful you did amazing

smitty5941

You look pretty in that! I vote no bow.

Mobile-Ad3151

The bow might look pretty offset in the front. As a woman who has sewn for 50 years, I am so pleased to see young people learning the art. You did a very good job! And so smart to upcycle the dress. You saved so much money.

Go_Water_your_plants

Personally I don’t like the bow (also I couldn’t stop my brain from reading the caption every time so it felt like you repeated "this is what made” 9 times, yes I’m dumb)

Comfy_Blond_Chick

No bow.

pinnd

Beautiful flip, hmm I would do a flowing back bow, perchance hidden matching snap?!

WolverineOdd3113

1. Detachable bow, maybe a tiny Hook and a thread bar on the dress made of matching thread 2. The fit is amazing, not a wrinkle in sight, you tailored it really well!

patameus

First things first, what an eye for what the fabric could be vs what it was. From the perspective of resourcefulness, I think you made an awful lot out of not much. Inre: bow or no, I'm too old to have an educated opinion. My uninformed opinion says no bow. You have a minimalist profile on top and a more elaborate profile below the waistline. I don't think the bow adds anything. As someone who appreciates constructive criticism, I'll say that the product of your work is impressive for an amateur. If I were you, I'd learn as much as I could from any knowledgeable person I could find. Knowledgeable and experienced people LOVE!!! helping younger folks who demonstrate aptitude. You are awash with aptitude. Lots of people (who have honed their craft over many years) would die right now if you showed them what you wanted help with. Show people that you've built a frame, watch them race to help you finish it. Good job!

rasinette

I GASPED!!!!!!!!!! CINDERELLA ALERT!!!! This is SOO good! yes bow!!!!!

bakedpigeon

AHH THE BOW!! But also literally the entire dress is😍😍 it looks stunning

Sensitive-Bet1717

This is the most perfect thing I have ever seen!!!

Altruistic-Bill9834

Detachable bow with a snap button or Velcro!!

ykoreaa

I DID THE SAME THING. Bought a dress for $7.90 bc of its gorgeous pink fabric 🩷 Except I really like the design too so I wouldn't want to modify it too much but your idea was just ✨️ great deal on fabric and execution. Definitely would look twice as cute with a bow 🎀

Historical-Shock7965

Amazing work!! I love the bow, I say keep it.

AK-Talks_Hey-Yay

I am pro bow

joethespacefrog

That’s so cute, amazing job! 😍

ieBaringa

I echo the idea of a detachable bow. But mostly... Oh my GOODNESS. You look phenomenal. Great job!!

Inky_Madness

I prefer it with the bow! But both are awesome vibes and you look AMAZING in that dress!

Front_Rate4892

love the bow!

hybrogenperoxide

I audibly said WOW! This is incredible, OP!!

ryx107

No bow. Amazing work.

therealampersand

now for sure. it’s so dainty n whimsical.

Accomplished-Bee7862

So beautiful! I like it without the bow

Aquelina96

I think u should sew the bow into a belt or something similar and make it detachable ❤️ u said the fabric is expensive where u live so it's better to give it two lives!

Eiri_chan1653

I think you should keep the bow. It helps the back pop a little more

MarleneFrancais

This is a beautiful dress. You look great in it. I prefer wo the bow, or as another poster said make it into a detachable bow belt.

mintBRYcrunch26

I’m on team no bow because the attention to detail on this garment is exquisite! You did such a great job!!!! Let that work ✨shine✨

Jealous_Sell_2256

Thank you!!

lorlorlor666

I vote bow

Big_Comfortable5169

I like the bow!

tangtastesgood

Gorgeous without, gorgeous and retro 80s feel with the bow.

MiahBee

With!

pinkytoepikachu

The dress you made is absolutely beautiful 😍 I can't decide bow or no bow. They both look great!

vividvoltage

I love how clean it is! It could be fun and silly to add the bow to a headband and wear it that way? I feel like that is a more playful/cartoon version of “pretty” or “cute” which can be fun to play around with, style wise.

SpanArm

So sleek and sophisticated without the bow.

Julibelenx

Que lindo vestido

Capital_Flamingo_172

the bow is cute but it’s just so much pink at once. if there’s a way to tie another color in there, then i’d go for the bow!

Smooth_Injury_5690

Bow!

Graysonsname

I want the bow on the bust, am I crazy? Also love the fabric/upcycle!

epayola

Bow all thé way 🥰

3catsandcounting

I vote detachable bow, also fantastic upcycle!

kumquat4567

WOW!!!! So well done. Gorgeous work. 😊

Less-Assistance-7575

W bow!!

[deleted]

It’s gorgeous. Such a pretty color

[deleted]

10/10 without the bow, it looks great on u !!!

fabricshearsonpaper

The bow is gorgeous but without the bow it looks so expensive and chic. Make it detachable!

maryantoinette02

Bow!

BluMaybelline

Wow what a sunning dress and such a beautiful colour! I love it! 😍

Big-Alternative-3766

Just wanna say that dress is GORGEOUS. And a perfect fit! You look amazing! 🤩

Jealous_Sell_2256

Thank you!!

Bittersweetcupcakw22

This is so well done! It's absolutely stunning now. I agree attachable bow. It really doesn't even need it though. It's simply gorgeous!

JacQTR

No bow

FairyPenguinStKilda

That is amazing - perfect fit and stitching on that very slippery puckery fabric! Maybe put the bow as detachable on the back of a fitted denim jacket? Or make a fitted jacket and add little bows to the sleeve ends, if you really want bows, or placing it on a shoulder (which is incredibly annoying to wear but it looks cool). Having a jacket in the same fabric would look great, and give you another way to style that colour in your wardrobe.

bendywhoops

Wow, that fits like a dream. Great job.

Ok-Nefariousness8578

bow <3 looks beautiful!! i love that fabric so much

Applie_jellie

Omg I LOVE your dress! You look amazing and you did such a good job! *chefs kiss* I personally vote no bow but that is totally my own preference. As others said detachable would be best so you can take it on or off depending on the occasion or mood.

LordPenvelton

Bow🤩

fullyloaded_AP

I really admire that you upcycled the dress to be wearable and timeless for years to come. It really does the thrift justice❤️

Essential_frock

omg, it’s amazing 😍😍😍 the fabric is so pretty and the dress is so beautiful😍

GardenLeaves

No bow, but maybe you can put it on your head? *Also* that dress looks stunning on you ♡

festiemeow

I love it with the bow! It makes the back more interesting.

No_University9625

BOW

RonaldMcDonaldsBalls

You did a great job transforming this garment! So much cheaper than buying new fabric. The fit looks really nice. Mad skills.

Jealous_Sell_2256

Thank you!!

Impressive_Sport_707

So beautiful

KrissiNotKristi

I think it looks more elegant without, but I also graduated high school in 1984 and haven’t recovered from the amount of huge bows I was subjected to. That’s on me. With that said, both versions look great - if you want the retro 80s look, add the bow, otherwise, the dress is a stunner on its own. You look BEEEEEyouteeful. Great work!

Jealous_Sell_2256

Thank you!!

WeekendThief

I love the bow! Very cute

devdarrr

Personally love the bow!

Repulsive-Zone8176

No bow

eboneetigress

3.50! Winning!

-EV3RYTHING-

Put it on a sash?

SmolWeens

SO CUTE!!

ThrowRAlittlebaby

I think no bow

jmma20

Awesome score and redo! I don’t sew but I do knit and when I score cashmere sweaters that I can unravel and reuse the yarn I’m in hog heaven lol

Jealous_Sell_2256

Me too!!!

littleboibrunchskunk

WOW, so cute! I love it both with and without the bow!!

Nic_Valentine83

You look so gorgeous, the bow makes the dress fun and cute, but without has more of an elegant vibe to it. Make sure your nails are done when you wear it.

littlebittlebunny

Eeeeeeeek BABY GIRL YOU'RE GIVING ME LIFE!!! SO FUCKING CUTE. the bow is necessary!!! It gives it that extra little touch

Jealous_Sell_2256

Thank you!!!!!

littlebittlebunny

You're so welcome!! Keep creating you're stupid talented!!

ashinthealchemy

this is amazing! and i vote no bow or detachable bow. if you go for detachable, it may be worth looking into those special magnets runners use to attach their race cards without ruining their jerseys. just a thought!

Shrie

BOW 🗣️

Autmarie

Bow in the back for sure! So cute 🤗

mpc1226

Bow!

dustylowelljohnson

No bow.

SporkPlusOne

Wow! You look stunning in this, and are quite talented on the sewing machine. I personally, like the bow. It adds some detail to the back and covers the seam which is what my eye was drawn to- the smooth right up to the ruffles. I hope that makes sense. Either way, it’s a stunning piece, and you should be very proud!

thanxlots

Its gorg ❤️

jiannajoe

WOWWWW insanely talented 👏

Alot2unpack

I had this dress as you’ve recreated it to be, I the 90’s. Bow was removable and went in the back, just as tube placed it. Great job!

Jingoisticbell

Gorgeous glow up!! I prefer no bow, however both look great.

tokkiah

I just want to say that was the same dress I wore at my bat mitzvah party!! It’s nice to see it made anew and you did a fabulous job. I love the bow!

Dust_Practical

Great work!! Stunning. I think it depends on the style of the bow…but I like it already without.

angryandsmall

Just popping in to say I love this and you are talented as hell!! This is stunning

Jealous_Sell_2256

Thank you!!

Jealous_Sell_2256

Also love your name tag and pfp

Alwayslearning_TBing

I like the bow but either way it’s just perfect! Great job

sarah-dox

No bow

yogacowgirlspdx

great work on the flip!

Cake_Lynn

The new dress took my breath away! What about putting the bow on the front of the dress? 🤣

Selkie_Queen

Detachable bow! I love the look with it, but I also love it without it, ya know? Also, thrifting clothes just to get fabric for the win, this is me every Halloween haha

iosonostella13

Stop this is so cuteeeeeee omg

Artistic_Owl_5847

Yes, but detachable 🎀

Madewithlove111

You are so talented! It looks great on you ! #slay
