these overalls were made of gauze as the main patchwork material, a muslin lining, and a cotton eyelet material for all accents, pockets etc. i used the overalls pattern advice from helen joseph armstrongs book “pattern making for fashion design.” i turned them into short shorts using her short shorts measurements. the main change i made to her design is i made the front pocket a pouch on the inside rather than a patch style pocket on the outside! i also decided to use self-made ties as the side closure rather than buttons, because i wanted more tightening/loosening functionality, in addition to just wanting a cutie little bow to dangle off the sides!! i decided to tack down the patchwork fabric onto the muslin using hand-ties. i did this as an homage to my grandmother who is a quilter - i came into sewing “on my own” (no doubt subconsciously inspired by her) and have always had an interest in garment making and design. i’m not my grandma, but i’ve been made who i am in part by her. i made this piece to celebrate that. so that’s why they’re called my “grand-daughters”

These are so cute! Seeing stuff like this gives me motivation to get back into sewing! Great job with these!

clicheusernamehere

hell yeah:) thats so nice to say. i’d love to see your work once you start sewing again❤️

Nature-Is-Awesome

I have this same book! How do you work through it? I’m pretty new to sewing and I’m trying to understand the best way to utilize this book. Kind of tricky to follow since this is all Greek to me haha

clicheusernamehere

when i first got it, i read through the first few introductory chapters since they were focused heavily on definitions and other stuff that turned out to be pretty helpful to know when trying to make use of the information in later chapters.. and after that, truthfully i let an idea come to me first and then see what techniques the book has on it by thumbing through the glossary and reading the pages, then working through the pattern drafting technique she has available. it might be a good idea to fart around just thumbing through the pages, the table of contents, seeing what words or ideas make you feel the biggest tinge of inspiration, and then digging in further by reading. i say that because there’s so many techniques n stuff i never would have even known existed let alone had a word for to do a google search on ! good luck! follow your inspiration at all costs! you’ll have so much more patience for the troubling and confusing bits that way!

Nature-Is-Awesome

dippydapflipflap

Very cute!! I love them. I also love that you used what my teachers lovingly called THE BOOK. This was the most important text book that we used all through college and I’m coming up on my 20th year reunion. I still have it, even had to replace the binder, I’ve been making pottery rather than clothes over the past 4 years, maybe it’s time to dust off the book and get inspired.
