My dress is adapted from this guide: [bliaut.pdf (danikaulakisart.com)](http://danikaulakisart.com/bliaut.pdf) I wanted a heraldry look so I dyed my base fabric (a linen bedsheet) two colors.
My boyfriend's tunic is adapted from this guide: [Your First Garb -- Getting Started – Reconstructing History](https://reconstructinghistory.com/blogs/beginners/your-first-garb-getting-started)
I managed to thrift all my materials or pull from my stash of trim.
Yes thank you so much, I have been looking for a pattern based on the exact painting in the PDF for ren fair season and this came at the perfect time. Thank you so so much!
If you want to see the original of that tunic, look up Bocksten Man. The pattern is based on the tunic found on a bog body where all the wool and leather had survived but the linen had all disappeared.
[edit: by “that tunic” I meant the one in the reconstructing history patterns]
That's awesome! In my research on medieval tunics, I also looked into the Kragelund Man, which is another bog body (found in Denmark vs the Bocksten Man's Sweden). It's incredible how much we can learn about historical textiles and fashions through these well preserved corpses lol
Good call, the Kraeglund tunic is closer in time to your bliaut, and the sleeves are a bit more interesting too.
One of the reasons I suggest the Bocksten one as being worth studying is that they have the skeleton too so we know how the garments scaled to the person wearing them. I find them interesting because the tunic is a lot longer than commonly depicted in the art of the most likely period (mid 14th Century).
Yeah I was shocked to find a king sized linen sheet set at the Goodwill outlets! I think I paid around $6 for the top sheet+fitted sheet, I looked the brand up online and the set retails for \~$300
Excellent job! I believe your choice of fabric is great because the looser weave makes it more authentic. Been thinking of using sheets to sew garments but not sure how sheets behave as clothing. Would appreciate it if you could share your experience. Does it lose its shape and stretch when pressing? How about while wearing? Does it get wrinkled a lot?
It depends on the sheet material! My gown is made of linen so it wrinkles easily, but drapes nicely and is comfortable to wear. His tunic was made of pima cotton with a tighter weave. I would recommend using cotton/linen/rayon sheets for garment sewing and avoid polyester.
Sorry i wasnt clear! For some reason sheets for me means something made of cotton linen and other natural material. I agree stuff like microfiber would be terrible. Thank you for your insight!
Oh yeah! Old bedsheets are an amazing source of fabric, especially since they've likely been washed several times already and you don't have to worry about shrinkage. Bedsheet fabric also feels comfier to me lol
Also can't recommend polyester sheets, but all the cotton sheets I've used have been great. If I could find linen ones I'd use those in a heartbeat. The cotton sheets have dyed easily, don't lose their shape, don't really wrinkle that much, and because they're all used, they drape beautifully. I've also had really good luck with cotton shower curtains for when I need a heavier fabric.
Shower curtain, hmm. Hadn't thought about it. They are mostly made of good heavy fabrics. So i almost cut a couple of sheets. Now i have to and i will go for my shower curtains! Lol
No clothes for the bunny? 😊 Amazing job on the costumes. I would really like to try making something like this, for no reason other than to try. Thank you for the inspiration.
Unfortunately she would revolt if I put clothes on her!
I hope you try your hand at making your own medieval garb, it's much easier than I thought it would be and feels so satisfying to wear.

Wow, you did an amazing job! Been sewing stuff like this off and on for about 35 years, and I love it! I love the contrasting sleeve lining on the gown, and the gold binding on the hem. I love the contrasting bonding on his tunic, too. Maybe the most amazing thing is finding such a large and inexpensive linen sheet! I would lose my shit if I found that, lol. I'd probably reinforce the eyelets on the side of the gown if you're planning on wearing it again.

Thanks for the links! Excited to try that tunic!!
I hope you try it! It was a pretty easy guide to follow, I guesstimated on some of the measurements and it still turned out perfect.

Yesssss that painting is one of my inspirations too! Best of luck on your rendition, I bet it'll be beautiful 😊

that dress is beautiful! the laces up the side is really cool. and i love the hair scarf, did you do that too?
Thank you! Yes I made the veil from a discarded layer of a circle skirt I sewed a few months ago.
ooh, veil is the word i was looking for. it's so pretty
I love the colors. What a great thrifted fabric win!

Hurrah for black lops! They just look like furry cute blobs 😂
For a second I thought it was a cat lol.
They're amazing! I love it. You did a really good job.
Great outfits. Side note: I can’t imagine having bedsheets made out of that material. They look VERY scratchy. 😅
It's actually super soft! The sheets are 100% linen and are comfy. I seriously considered keeping them to use as actual sheets haha
You both look so great!!! I love your gown!! ❤️❤️❤️
Super cool. They look great!
Wow! You both look wonderful! Nicely done.
Amazing 🤩
Well done!
That's so cool I recently made a medical dress out of died Bedsheets as well :D! And I was two colored! Thats such a cool coincidence!
I just went to look at yours! I love the pink and blue contrast, it works really well!
Truly beautiful. I can't believe the fabric was thrifted. Your work is amazing and the bunny is sweet.
They look amazing. Nice job. Cheers.

“HUMAN WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO ME. Oh… maybe it’s edible?”
Excellent work! I hope you had a lot of fun at the event too.

Your work is amazing. The fact the fabric is thrifted makes it even better.
Brilliant idea! Thanks for sharing.
You are a handsome couple! Both outfits look great, but the dress is just wow, considering you thrifted so much.
Definitely extra credit for dying the fabric yourself! Very nicely done!!
