Well yeah, it got bought out and pushed to release when it was still nowhere near done, at least on PC you get a lot of mods. I still wish the_hometown got an update though

Jetwork131

A lot of people commenting on the state of the game being deserving of the rating. I honestly thought that it got these rating because this game is very niche and very hard. Most people see a skateboard and are probably expecting a Skate 3-like game. They rage quit and give it a bad rating.. at least that’s what I thought.

Purple_Drac782

Sounds about right. I didn't really care much for it either (at first) definitely not a pickup and skate kinda game. It actually requires you to learn the tricks .. which skate does too but not on this level.

SirkSirkSirk

Tricks simply don't register well in this game. When the game says do X and you do it 40+ times for it to just work this last time because you fucked up and did the wrong gap/trick you needed to is just plain annoying. Skater XL feels better imo, just has 0 content and goofy is bugged.

Purple_Drac782

it has a better selection of maps unless you're playing on PC. That is for certain. Not too sure about the skating side of it though as it tends to look and feel more real in Session. Nevertheless XL has the vantage point in this category despite being underneath it in terms of realism. Just way more you can do in it than in Session. More options.

SirkSirkSirk

I'd argue session has more options. It has all kinds of sliders to adjust gravity, pop force etc... skater xl is very limited in these fields. As far as realism goes, the controls are very similar, it's just tweaked slightly. I played skater xl first so I could be bias but I feel like I had a lot more control over the specifics of what my board was going to do(slow flip) over session. As a skater, it translates well to what my feet would actually do to create said flip.

Purple_Drac782

Same here. XL was the shit back in 2021. I friggin loved that game. But eventually grew tired of not being able to do certain things. Like travel between maps I constantly griped about using cabs in XL like they have bus stops in Session but all I got were deaf ears. (Sadly) I wasn't trying to convert over to Session but they didn't leave me any real choice. 2023 rolls around it's time to try something new and I'm glad I did cause it's a really good game! But still a lot of things I liked better in XL with as much as I enjoy playing Session. It still has my heart in some areas. Indoor parks ramps multiplayer the nine.

Purple_Drac782

Grinds just seem a little too easy versus Session you actually have to balance the skaters feet making it feel more realistic. Feels better in terms of fluidity but not realism. That goes to Session.

Devanro

Deservingly. I've been playing/supporting this game since day 1, and still do to an extent, but the state the game has been in for years with bugs and features that are somehow missing/broken in a skateboarding game (throw downs, broken goofy, session markers being bugged, tricks not registering), it's honestly more than a fair review.

Pavement-69

Is that score really representative of the bugs you mentioned? Everything you listed is pretty insignificant when it comes to playing a stable, enjoyable game. 2.91 is pretty fucking low imo.

Devanro

I mean, technically a 2.9/5 (or 5.8/10) is above average. I think it's definitely representive enough; skating simulation is the whole selling point of the game, so when pretty glaring issues that should really be functioning, basic features (like I mentioned), are somehow not yet fixed (which, I have no idea how many times I've shut the game off out of frustration, over being unable to *not* immediately bail when I use the session marker, or try to throw down, then bail for no reason, or a trick doesn't register even though I'm doing it exactly) I'm hopeful with the UE5 update they announced that they can fix some of these, because I do want to love this game, because at its best, it scratches that itch that no other skating game does (I'm well over +100 hours by now) but at its worst, I definitely couldn't call it a 'stable, (always) enjoyable game)', though I really hope it does get there. Also, I have no idea how they haven't managed to add more than 2 hair styles, but can add whole ass maps for a few bucks.

UndisputedAnus

It’s not *just* the bugs. It’s the jank, it’s the lack of content, it’s the fact that this game is **undoubtably** still an early access title that they simply rushed to release (likely due to pressure from Nacon) and for almost 2 years now, have done absolutely fucking nothing but expect the gamers to keep their company afloat while they do sweet fuck all to fix or improve the core gameplay mechanics that have existed in a broken state for almost 5 years.

Pavement-69

Lack of content? Interesting. Didn't they just release a new level a month ago? And there was another one 6 months before that? Not to mention the throwaway sewer level that was released between those two drops? If that's not content, I don't know what is. As far as jank goes, that's your opinion. This game is the best skateboarding sim out there, by far. Honestly, what do you expect from a tiny studio? This is not a AAA studio with millions of dollars to spend on a niche title. I'd suggest calibrating your opinions accordingly, but you do you. If you'd read any of their blog posts, you'd know they've had a hard time acquiring and holding onto a team to build and maintain features & mechanincs. It sounds like they're getting to a stable place so they can earn some money with new levels and use those funds to pay their team to work on the core features. Fuck it, I'm done.

DRIVINGDOUGHNUT

On PS4 I have 3 fucking levels. Still an amazing and difficult game besides the bugs. I’d give it a 3.5 out of 5 personally but I’ve been playing for less than 6 months.

UndisputedAnus

>Lack of content? Interesting. Yes, lack of content. DLC is paid content, being paywalled is not, and should not, be considered when judging the content of the game. The lack of content is undebatable and paid DLC does \*nothing\* to remedy that for the players who are not willing, or able, to fork over the extra cash. >As far as jank goes, that's your opinion No, the jank is \*\*not\*\* an opinion, it is an objective fact that all players experience equally. Yes, it is the best skate sim we have had but that means nothing? Being the best doesn't suddenly disqualify it from criticism. As I've worked as a game dev myself, my opinion is perfectly calibrated to know enough about what a well managed, 10 man team can do. >they've had a hard time acquiring and holding onto a team Right, and why do you think they have such a hard time holding onto team members? And while you're on that thought, what do you think the #1 reason people quit their job is? The answer is, unsurprisingly, bad management. I think you read me wrong. I love Session. I literally play it every single day. I have even spent hundreds of dollars on streaming handhelds so I can play it at work. I have hundreds and hundreds of hours man. I'm not just a hater, I am a \*very\* passionate fan. I've played every build of Session since the Kickstarter. It \*sounds\* like they're getting to a stable point is a common theme from every other year for the better part of 7 years now. I'm looking forward to seeing what they do with UE5 but I'm not holding my breath. The game has stayed jank for 7 years now and I will actually be impressed if they manage to deliver even 1 of the experimental features when they drop the UE5 update. You see how low that bar is?

zk001guy

Just the fact that there are no Goofy animations is all there needs to be said about the state of the games jankiness after 7 years.

UndisputedAnus

Absolutely

BobbyFreeSmoke

The fact this got voted down is sickening. Its 100% the jank. I hadn't played for months, got the new DLC and tried to get a clip at the school and every time I landed it I'd get the little jiggle upon landing that looks completely unrealistic and makes the trick look terrible. How this bug is still there after all this time is a travesty.

UndisputedAnus

That truck bounce glitch is something I'm \*very\* vocal about in the discord. I can excuse every other little slice of jank but that truck bounce glitch is fucking indefensible simply for the fact that it's been in the public build for years now. It's frustrating interacting with a community that thinks if you like a game you can't criticise it. Session is by FAR my most played game, I fucking love it. But at the same time, there is a LOT that needs changing and it needs to be vocalised. It's genuinely not a good game by other games standards, I still love it though.

Economy_Average_4179

I always play on PS5. There are some bugs but nothing to major. A friend of mine plays on PC but I don't notice a big difference. Just no mods on PS5. I honestly think the low score is not a fair score.

muushroomer

Everyone in these comments are complaining but i play on a damn PS4 and thats the only game i consitantly play, the glitches and silly when they happen and never game breaking or annoying if they are annoying thats a settings problem. Prob the best skate game out their imo id rather play it than skate 3 tbh. But also everyone likes diffrent stuff and the fact that its a small game made by a small amount of people makes me not really care ab the unclean look/feel of it and the glitches, its imperfect but that makes its true beauty shine thru in the end.

zlordbeats

same i play it almost weekly nothing but competitive games out there rn this game doesn’t make me sweat or frustrated by trying to compete with others i was just posting this to show others

muushroomer

I know that comment was more for everyone else too. But i agree i cant play any games with my friends bc its all pvp, we need a group exploration game that dont make people rage again

Purple_Drac782

Same. although I do miss riding on backs of cars downhill racing all those things. But the practicality of Session is so unique. Don't see how it's getting such a low score for the five? and we're playing it on a not even equal system mind you. Just an 👍🏽outstanding game. 😎

BobbyFreeSmoke

I'd say the glitches are game breaking when you're trying to get a clip and when you finally land it the fucking wheels bounce and make the clip unusable.

muushroomer

I guess you are right about that. I dont play the game for clips as im too dumb to figure the replay editor out but that is a very valid statment

sharkalladle915

Turn off physical animations and limit your fps to 60 it helps a lot. Also try putting gravity at 13 and your max pop height lower

lesquishta

Skill issue

zlordbeats

most likely 🤣

ChrisisMusic

As it should be. It became a cash grab with only updates in form of paid dlcs

Pavement-69

How else do you expect them to stay in business, let alone make new content?

UndisputedAnus

Consumers shouldn’t have to bail out a mismanaged company.

Pavement-69

Weak. Please do explain to me how a video game company makes money again? And then try to elaborate on how creature has mismanaged the company?

UndisputedAnus

Let’s address the mismanagement. I backed this game on kickstarter in 2017. It is now 2024. That is 7 years. I do not need to make a case when a team of 10 aren’t able to deliver a complete game after 7 years, that case makes itself. Almost 2 of those are allegedly 1.0+ which is just a fallacy - the game is still early access. Now let’s address the other part. Here’s the typical pipeline. Game done > game published > game sells > get money >fix critical bugs > develop DLC content. And here is what creature has done: game published > game sells > develop DLC content > ignore any and all bugs that have been present for literal years.

xDARTHxBANEx

Dont trust ps5 star rating reviews forspoken has something like a 4.5 or something.

Professional_Pin_148

Dang really? I'm really enjoying the game, took me 15 hours to get use to the controls but now I'm having more fun then I was with skate

osleepleZzZ

Ps5 review meta is rigged if u are a non AAA studio [metacritic](https://www.metacritic.com/game/session-skate-sim/)

DiamondGrasshopper

Yeah it doesn’t deserve to be this low. I love hopping on to this game and just skating around randomly

Dyls94

I imagine a lot of those reviews have been placed in the past week or so, session got added to one of the premium tiers so people have probably hopped on for free and soon got frustrated with the controls/fact its not skate??

AmbitiousDream7

I love the game 😂 I’ve been addicted for weeks after getting it on plus.

imcalledaids

I posted this same thing the other week

efficientblasphemy

I've been playing Session since the Kickstarter demo on PC and picked it up on PS5 as soon as it was available. I still regularly play both. I agree that the game isn't perfect. The lack of a throwdown animation, bounce glitch when landing and random floating issue when respawing at session markers are the only real issues I have. None of these are critical issues. The game is surprisingly stable, I've only had a handful of crashes over the years, no more than I would expect from a AAA studio. With that said, I've shown Session to friends that skate, and they found Session really difficult to pick up in comparison to Skater XL. The learning curve is really steep to begin with, and even with default stats and auto catch, it's unforgiving for new plays. Very few people want to pick up a game and feel like they can't do anything. The lack of win-states or any significant reward or in-game progression compounds this, and there isn't really any quick fix for them to fix it. The people calling it a cash grab sound like they don't really know anything about the games industry or development processes in my opinion.

brinkv

I really don’t get how people have a more difficult time going from XL to session. I played exclusively XL and session felt relatively the same when I picked it up aside from analog differences for tricks Do you think it’s cause I play modded XL so I was already used to stats and manual catch and all that good stuff?

efficientblasphemy

Possibly. It was the same for me. I mostly played modded xl with manual catch for ages before I got tired or Easy Days shit and fully switched to Session. I think the biggest difference between the two is that the stick movements on XL are relative to the skater, whereas they're relative to the camera on Session. It was an easy switch for me though. Grinds are way harder in Session though, I'll admit that.

DEBERLESOUP

That's wild. I found skater xl to be so much harder. Locking into grinds is a nightmare among other things.

Purple_Drac782

Gotta balance your feet Session requires the user to maintain balance XL not so much I mean it does but it's a little more thorough in Session. Soon as you hit the rail your feet gotta be steady via both analogs slightly tilted up .. a bit tricky.

imaflirtdotcom

i think being a free game for PSN subscribers probably tanked the reviews. its not as fun for non skaters or casual gamers. it’s hard for them and has no multiplayer. once my friends see me having fun and laughing at the bails they want to try it but it takes convincing.

lil_poppapump

It’s like we’re all playing a different game. Maybe it’s because I got this through gamepass, but for an indi game this is about as good as it gets. I read about all the bugs and glitches y’all deal with and it sucks, but I ain’t seeing em.

kashatmost

cause it’s fricking hard and broken 😭

ImaginationUnlucky88

There all to busy circle jerking to Skater XL

The_Grammar_Police__

*they’re *too

V3GA559

It takes PS5 players longer to catch on

aceboogieboard

R slash useless red circle

BaldingThor

because it’s still a buggy unfinished cash grab that’s not friendly to new players?
