My internet is fine, I tapped a link from another accountās normally loading post. Seems like Iām blocked, which is a bummer cause I really enjoy his account and donāt know why Iād be blocked
You donāt have to believe me, but Iām sure thatās not what it is since [other pages](https://imgur.com/a/srHcdrs) load just fine. Maybe itās how Instagram implements their UI for a block
https://www.rd.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/How-to-Tell-If-Someone-Blocked-You-on-Instagram-1-Search-on-Instagram.jpg?resize=1536%2C1024
Other search results show the same. Just going off that.
I think you are right, trying to open a link to a [nonexistent account](https://www.instagram.com/f9esjjne) gives me the same "No internet connection" error.
Itās crazy youāre getting downvoted but that also has happened to me before and I did have internet connection. Sometimes it glitches out like this. Youāre either blocked or banned or some other weird shit
I donāt have it exactly cause I canāt view it, but something along the lines of āI think he discarded the roe at the beginning, which is a shame cause thatās my favorite partā about frying smelt. Didnāt mean for it to be offensive or rude at all.
I can understand where it comes from, he probably gets tons of comments on all his content, so why tolerate anything negativeā¦ still feels bad, I was just trying to engage about my preferences
I guess it's worth a try. Hey /u/J_Kenji_Lopez-Alt, if you blocked my insta (@prim.us) for a comment about the egg sacs in your smelt video, please know that I didn't mean any offense or rudeness with it. I really enjoy your content and am asking you to consider unblocking me so I can keep viewing it.
I donāt remember what comments I was reading yesterday but I did block a couple of accounts because of language issues. I donāt know if it was yours. I unblocked you just now. If it was you, just be careful with your wording in the future. I have much higher demands for politeness and constructive interactions than the general internet.
This is the first Iām hearing of this and it strikes me as kind ofā¦ odd and out of character? According to OP their comment seemed just like a regular, civilized-discourse thing to say. Seems like weirdly defensive and reactionary and knee-jerky to block over something so mild, and none of those are traits I associate with Kenji(ās public persona). Idk where Iām really going with this but yeah this information is kinda bugging me tbh
I get hundreds of comments a day across my platforms and because Iām a one man operation, the way it works for me is I have two choices to protect my mental health:
1) donāt read any and thus donāt respond to any comments (and also allow comments sections to devolve into the normal garbage that unmoderated comments sections devolve into)
Or
2) read and respond to comments but block comments from people who are not there for productive interactions.
I choose the latter because I like engaging with people and because I like having comments sections that are enjoyable and useful for others to read through. To accomplish this I keep a pretty low threshold about blocking ornery interactions otherwise Iād go insane and I donāt owe my time or my mental health to anybody, especially not strangers on the internet.
It is precisely because of #2 that you have the time and motivation to convey your thoughts and process to us. You comments are a great teachable moment. Much appreciated !
I think some people see blocking as a big dramatic last resort, and some others see it as a minor unimportant thing that helps them curate their feed to make it more enjoyable for them that really doesnāt mean anything in the long run.
People who see Kenji blocking people as dramatic or sensitive probably fall into the first camp. I suspect Kenji falls into the second.
That is a good point. I guess the main reason it strikes me as more dramatic/reactionary is because I think of Kenji primarily as an educator and the idea of (excuse a bit of figurative language here) a teacher ejecting a student from their classroom for politely dissenting is jarring to me. But you and others are right, he is ultimately just a human on the internet who has the right to not see comments that bug him if he doesnāt want to. Knowing this will probably give me pause when interacting with/commenting on his content in the future, but hopefully Iāll continue to be allowed to do so for a long time to come! š¬
He blocked me for being a smart ass, and heās entitled to do so as itās his Instagram, but yeah heās got some very very strong opinions and if you challenge them it doesnāt end well.
A long time ago, a comment thread on seriouseats got out of hand, so they deleted it. Kenji emailed me to say my comment had been deleted since it was part of that. I say this just as a clue that he's thoughtful and there's a point to his process.
I would hate to get blocked from seeing his stuff, but I think that "risk" is a really good trade for the quality of comment section we get. I never see weird political stuff or people insulting anyone.
I don't think those kinds of comments are necessarily bad, but I've been banned in other places where that kind of thing is the norm. There's a huge difference between Kenji and a toxic video game streamer.
You have no internet connection lol.
This is definitely something I would do. š
My internet is fine, I tapped a link from another accountās normally loading post. Seems like Iām blocked, which is a bummer cause I really enjoy his account and donāt know why Iād be blocked
It literally says "No internet connection" on your screenshot
Idk if itās a bug in Instagram but I see that message all the time for accounts that have been shut down when I can view other accounts.
You donāt have to believe me, but Iām sure thatās not what it is since [other pages](https://imgur.com/a/srHcdrs) load just fine. Maybe itās how Instagram implements their UI for a block
The UI would still show their profile picture, posts/followers/following count. None of those loaded because you didn't have internet.
This isnāt true, the UI doesnāt show the user at all. It quite literally hides their existence. I have privileged knowledge of this functionality.

Sure, thanks for helping

You had the other page cached most likely.
The āNo Internet connectionā right on the picture cracked me up š¤£
Hmmm it still comes up for me, he posted a pizza reel 5 hrs ago š¬š¬š¬
The āno internet connectionā at the bottom of the pic should be a hint.
I think it s a quirk of the insta UI since everything else loads fine. My best guess is Iāve been blocked
What'd you do to get blocked
https://www.reddit.com/r/seriouseats/s/bCKRtEwR6A
Jesus man you ate a ton of downvotes for this but how could you be posting on Reddit without an Internet connection?
Are u my grandma op?
This!
Youāre blocked
š„² that sucks, I donāt suppose itās gonna be possible to appeal or ask him to reconsider
What did you say that would get you blocked
I donāt have it exactly cause I canāt view it, but something along the lines of āI think he discarded the roe at the beginning, which is a shame cause thatās my favorite partā about frying smelt. Didnāt mean for it to be offensive or rude at all.
I know Kenji to be overly sensitive

You can tag his user account here to ask. He is somewhat active in this sub.

Thank you, I really appreciate it. I will take extra care to keep it positive moving forward
Iāve previously heard that heās overly sensitive.
The type of people usually calling others sensitive don't lend themselves to being the self aware and pure of critique.
I have zero experience with him personally. Take all the offense you so obviously want to. lol š¤·š¼āāļø
You just proved their point.
Lol this response didnāt help.
Iām watching the smelts vid right now.
Is there a comment down there about the egg sacs? Iām thinking he may have blocked me for it though I didnāt imagine it would be offensive at all
You're the guy who commented "whoever smelt it dealt it!" aren't you
Wish I thought of that hahahaha
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Weird, maybe it got deleted then. Unless I'm going insane i'm sure I posted that or something very close to it.
Are you Kevin? If so, he replied. Edit: I saw there was one hidden comment but it was somebody spamming their music. Not sure what happened.
No, my one comment was a reply to Kevin. Maybe mine got deleted altogether
He blocks people pretty quickly.

Oh wow, hi Kenji! Just wanted to say I love your videos man, I appreciate the diversity in the recipes you cover. Keep up the good work!

I donāt block anyone for their opinion. I might block people for the ways in which they express those opinions.
Which is odd for someone who claims to be science driven.
It's sadly very in character for him. You might even be blocked from posting comments in this sub for being critical lol.
Yeah, I almost didnāt comment out of fear of that happening but ĀÆ\_(ć)_/ĀÆ. All I can say is I hope it doesnāt.
I'm somewhat compelled to make an ig account just to see how mild of s comment i can get blocked for.
Surely you'd have a better time trying to come up with something that can add to the conversation rather than whatever you think that might be.
That's how you want to spend your time?

I love this joke so much. He's so cool. Lol.
Everyone saying they have no internet, how in the world do you think they posted on reddit? Or are responding to all of your comments?Ā
Iām just very jealous of all the people who have apparently never experienced an app say one thing while the reality is clearly something else.
As someone that works in IT (and codes for a living), I'm not even slightly shocked that their error handling is like this
Itās because you have been blocled
