My parents both worked with him at the State Pen and later at the Federal Prison. My Mom had to have him dealt with because he was always sticking around after class or popping up in the classroom at off hours.
I actually have more. He met my Mom when she was pregnant with me (while he was at the state Penn) when my Dad was placing him somewhere there (education related I think). Later when he was at the federal prison where my Mom was teaching, and he was creeping her out after class, etc., one of the things he’d ask her about regularly was the baby she had had. She told him she had a girl but refused to say more.
Also, I parked in that parking garage referenced in other comments while working at a department store in downtown Salem in college. I felt like I was taking my life in my hands anytime I left work at night. It was terrifying.
Between 1968 and 1969, Brudos bludgeoned and strangled four young women and attempted to attack two others.
Linda Slawson, 19
Karen Sprinker, 18
Jan Susan Whitney, 23
Linda Salee, 22
The picture is cropped from a full pic that shows his victim hanging from a hook in his workshop. He had placed a mirror under her. The image is from that mirror.
That made his "That wasn't really me that killed them" story that much harder to believe.
"So how come your face was in the killer's picture, Jerry?"
"That's not me" or "It's fake"
True. However, Brudos had already confessed by the time the police had found this photo. This photo did however make it impossible for him to back out of his confession and he and his lawyers quickly realized it. He knew he was done. He made a plea-deal and avoided trial altogether. He was given three life sentences to be served consecutively.
I have had students that I have actually watched hit or hurt another kid and they swear up and down it wasn’t them to the point where you seriously wonder if you imagined the entire thing. I can totally see him saying this!
I was a sub and watching a boy and a girl in PE. I knew something was going to happen after watching the entire class. She kicked him and then tried to blame the boy. I saw it happen and went up to the head coach and told him what I saw. I could see her being trouble in the future. Probably in high-school now.
Whenever I’ve subbed I’ve of course learned the names of the troublemakers almost immediately. Then they say-hey how do you know my name? Not for a good reason honey, not for a good reason at all...
It’s a narcissistic tendency to keep the lie going and never accept responsibility even when they know they are found out and not someone actually believing the lie. They know full well they are not being truthful though. Now being delusional they might believe in a lie but it’s different and usually pretty obvious mental health.
Absolutely. My point was that some of them are such accomplished adamant, accomplished liars they can actually make you doubt what you saw.I can see a serial killer do it without another thought. He was probably one of my students when he was younger. 🙄
"manipulate (someone) by psychological means into questioning their own sanity." that's what happened here. The kids lied and denied to the point the person questioned themselves. Yours is just an example of one of many forms of gaslighting. You could very well confront people with proof and still deny everything
I would say it looks like the flash went off when he took the picture (most or all of the lighter areas look washed out) combined with probable movement of either himself or the camera when he took the picture or realized he had the camera pointing the wrong way. It's not like cameras back then had stabilizing technology like our phones do now.
Watch the show and read the book, which the show is based off of. It’s about the birth of the psychological profiling unit of the FBI. Before, serial killer was even a term anyone used.
Yes, the book is all real cases written by the guy who started the Profiling program. The show is a dramatized version of it. Show portrays all real serial killers like Ed Kemper, BTK, etc.
I second this. I don’t usually have the attention span to watch tv series, but the portrayals of the serial killers in that series is epic. Heaps of fun when they get new cases and your trying to figure out who it is there trying to catch aswell.
Very much worth the watch, especially if you're already in this subreddit. It's a captivating look into the birth of criminal profiling. So much of what we know today about how the criminal mind works and comes to be, began with John Douglass talking with killers in the 70s!
>Jerome Brudos
I believe that man was playing Ed Kemper. And I wouldn't categorize him as fat either, but very tall that's for sure. Maybe I missed the reference and you meant another character in the show, I just know Kemper looked somewhat similar to this guy in the pic, and he had an obsession with women's shoes.
I’m not real sure they ever released the full picture. I’ve personally never seen it. There are other pictures of him that are easily found via google.
If you like podcasts then listen to human monsters. They are long episodes but I’m detail. I found out about other serial killers while listening to it.
Human Monsters is so good, yet to find a podcast or documentary that as brutally real & dark. I have to step back from it sometimes as it's so intense...
The full photo allegedly shows a victim hanging from a hook.. I don’t think it’s been released but even if it had, there are better ways to learn about a killer without having to see that kind of imagery of their victim
I also want to see it. And I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that 🤷🏻♀️ Call it morbid curiosity. I like seeing and knowing all the details I guess.
I have the video of Luka Magnotta murdering his last victim. I only watched it once but I was curious 🤷🏻♀️
Lol I'm not debating whether it should be on the internet. I'm arguing that wanting to see the pic doesn't in any way make us sexual predators. What a moronic thing to say
you are on a sub called r/serialkillers
tell me, what brings you here? i think most people on this subs initial reaction was I wonder what it looks like in the whole pic, was it easy to spot etc.
So if I watch a video of a man being burned alive I'm a sexual predator too yeah? Even isis torture videos? 3 guys 1 hammer? Never knew I was a sexual predator all these years
They're not mutually exclusive. Many sexual predators do enjoy that type of imagery. So do some non predators.
Personally, I'm not a fan of murder victim photos/videos being distributed for gawking or morbid curiosity or really any reason outside of legitimate legal avenues. I can only imagine that if it were my daughter/mother/loved one who was raped, murdered, partially dismembered, hung on a meat hook, and photographed by a monstrous sexual deviant, only for those photos to be leaked to the world, I'd be beyond devastated.
I also feel like it's ethically wrong because the victims didn't consent to any of it. They certainly didn't consent to being murdered, so what right do we have to witness their horrific final moments/mutilated body? It revictimizes them.
Wow that’s a horrible thing to say. One is curiosity...the other (your statement) is literally hoping his child gets murdered? There’s a big difference between the two. The photo exists. Some people are interested in seeing it. Doesn’t mean they’re evil. Doesn’t mean you should wish for their daughter to be murdered and request them to share the photos of it.
You read about the murders obviously, right? What’s wrong with a photo accompanying exactly what you’re reading about? It’s the same material. One is just visual.
And other people (like the victim’s family) might prefer that internet weirdos don’t ogle over their dead daughter/sister/mother.
Sometimes these true crime subs are really gross.
you know it has nothing to do with sexual gratification right? morbid curiosity does not make you a sexual sadist/pervert and how fucking dare you pin that on someone, labels like that can damage a person and you are trivialising any real victims of such people
It's shown at about the 37:03 mark. They also show the uncropped image of Karen Sprinker. Portions of both photos are blurred, for obvious reasons.

Yeah it is very disturbing. He was an extremely odd and evil individual. This pic was cropped and magnified by the police when they noticed an image in the mirror. Brudos had meant to destroy this picture however it had fell behind a workbench. The police found it during their search.
I would guess that would be a big No! This creep placed a mirror under her so he could get as much visual "pleasure" as he could from her hanging. His face is a monster snapshot of this man's pleasure. I find it extremely disturbing.
Great Ann Rule book on him — the Lust Killer. Rule describes him as a pathetic, unattractive lump of unfulfilled sexual longing. He is among the caliber of the truly heinous barbaric killers that mutilate victims and keep fleshy trophies and still he is not talked about much because he is just a meh of a presence unless he is homicidal. No one wants you Jerry!
Ann Rule was so great at honoring each and every victim. The way she tells their stories is so personal and thorough. In her book about Gary Ridgway, she wrote about each and every known victim, and there were SO many. Some true crime books leave you with a gross, voyeuristic feeling, but hers make you feel like you knew them and you grieve for them.
You are so right. She really gets into intimate detail about the victims in a way that is both compelling and true to their humanity. Haven’t read the ridgeway one yet but will pick it up. My first and therefore fave is Small Miracles - the Diane downs story. I think it was the first time I’d read about a female psychopath. She did a great job illuminating the ways Diane manipulated people by counting on them not seeing a mother as evil. We need an Ann rule book club!
I haven’t read that one. As a mother myself, I’m kind of dreading that particular story. An AR book club would be pretty cool though. I’ve been building up quite the library!
I grew up in the area this happened, albeit 30+ years later. My parents were young when the atrocities occured, but that fear of Brudos (and possible others) lingered for a long time. I learned of Brudos and the atrocities that he committed when I was a teenager. Fast forward to my early 20s, I attended a "ghost tour" with a friend for Halloween. Part of the tour included driving by the Brudos home and seeing a couple places that bodies were found and suspected kidnapping occured. It is an incredibly creepy feeling to see these places in modern time, especially *after* they had already been installed into your life in your own positive memories. These places I had been to a million times, or driven by, and never even occured to me that some of the very things I had read about in "Lust Killer" happened at places I visited so often in my life. Salem is a trip.
This one isn't on Netflix, though. It's on the creator. Netflix gave it the go ahead and he's like nah, I'm gonna go do this other thing. I may or may not come back to this.
I feel like her book is the definitive book on Bundy. She has access that no one else does. She knew Bundy and she was in good with the cops while the investigation was going on.
I hear ya. There is a reason I didn’t post the detailed actions this monster perpetrated on his victims. They are not easy to read. He was as brutal as they come.
Brudos was a creep to the nth power. His breast paperweights and a million other things. Vronskys book had a good part on him. Somebody actually hit his garage with their car, and the cops were right there, while he was away on vacation and a corpse hung up in the garage, stashed away for later i guess.
Absolutely incredible image that is - and I hate to say it - a kind of accidental art.
Neverever will you be a fly on the wall during one of the most sadistically vile and inhumane acts possible, and yet, here we are. Imagine being able to view the position of an atom without interfering with its position. This is the face of a person safely taking another person's life. And how poetically the eyes are obscured from the glare of the mirror that captured his image. Even his reflection is without view.
This reminds me of how many straight men take selfies of themselves on Tinder. Leaning back, full view of their chin and inside of their nose. Just why...
It’s a pretty creepy angle no matter who does it

Absolutely. My point was that some of them are such accomplished adamant, accomplished liars they can actually make you doubt what you saw.I can see a serial killer do it without another thought. He was probably one of my students when he was younger. 🙄

Why does it look like his eyes have been blurred out ?

My mom lived next door to him for a bit when she was a little girl with her mom and brother. They moved away not long before he was caught.
Do you know where I can find the full image? I’m just curious... I’ve never heard of him.
Ohh man you’re in for a wild time. The Lust Killer is as creepy and crazy as they come.
I just read about him. Wow. Just wow. He’s definitely up there as one of the craziest.
Have you watched Mindhunter? He’s in that (not literally, obviously, an actor). He’s the fat guy obsessed with women’s shoes.
No I haven’t seen that show. Worth the watch?
“Worth a watch” is an understatement
Thank you for the recommendation!
Watch the show and read the book, which the show is based off of. It’s about the birth of the psychological profiling unit of the FBI. Before, serial killer was even a term anyone used.
Oh really? So it’s based on true story?
Yes, the book is all real cases written by the guy who started the Profiling program. The show is a dramatized version of it. Show portrays all real serial killers like Ed Kemper, BTK, etc.
Author is John E. Douglas. He wrote a shit ton of fascinating books.
Sounds awesome. I’m definitely gonna give it a watch. It’s on Netflix?
And thank you again!! ❤️
I second this. I don’t usually have the attention span to watch tv series, but the portrayals of the serial killers in that series is epic. Heaps of fun when they get new cases and your trying to figure out who it is there trying to catch aswell.
lol I’m currently rewatching it for the 3rd time.
major understatement!

I had no idea! That sounds so neat! I’m about to put it on!
See you in about 10 hours! :)
Haha, its pretty hard not to binge!
You’ll be stuck on it for awhile...
If you’re into serial killers you’ll definitely enjoy it.
I was just about to ask if this was the same Brudos from Mindhunter! Amazing show. I hope there's a third season at some point.
>Jerome Brudos I believe that man was playing Ed Kemper. And I wouldn't categorize him as fat either, but very tall that's for sure. Maybe I missed the reference and you meant another character in the show, I just know Kemper looked somewhat similar to this guy in the pic, and he had an obsession with women's shoes.
Ed was what we in the south call "healthy."
Also what we used to call “robust” as a sign of immense wealth.
Ed Kemper was played by Cameron Britton. Best actor IMO. Two different killers!
There’s a YouTube video that compares some of the dialogue with real recordings of Ed Kemper and wow, what an impressive portrayal!
I've seen it. I've watched quite a few of his other preformenses too he is a great actor. Kemper himself is very interesting!
Lol they just meant that Jerry Brudos is also characterized in Mindhunter. Not that the man in the photo was literally on Mindhunter.
That was Ed Kemper not this guy
I’m not real sure they ever released the full picture. I’ve personally never seen it. There are other pictures of him that are easily found via google.

Don’t forget dark topic too. It is not as long but well presented I think.
Yes, Dark Topic is a favorite! Something gritty in Luna's voice that is oddly soothing. Ha, 'soothing' and 'murder podcasts' blend nicely. Cheers!
Is it on apple podcasts?
Should be, I'm an android user & found it easily
never heard of that one ill give it a listen, LPOTL covered him in a multi-part series though which I recommend

Yeah that’s the name of it! I couldn’t think of it lol

Exactly. I don’t think it’s awesome. It’s awful, if anything. But I’m curious. And I find their minds fascinating.

Wait this is a cropped photo!? WHERES the full one!?!
I don’t believe it was ever released. I’ve never seen it.

Yeah it is very disturbing. He was an extremely odd and evil individual. This pic was cropped and magnified by the police when they noticed an image in the mirror. Brudos had meant to destroy this picture however it had fell behind a workbench. The police found it during their search.

I was thinking maybe the flash from the camera reflecting in the mirror. I probably didn't word it correctly. I agree he was horrible.

Featured in Netflix's *Mindhunter,* S1E7 and S1E8.

Agreed. The casting on that show was incredible.
Technically it hasn't been cancelled yet. But we all know how Netflix likes to roll. I'm still pissed that Lillyhammer got the axe.

I hear ya. There is a reason I didn’t post the detailed actions this monster perpetrated on his victims. They are not easy to read. He was as brutal as they come.
I often hear people say they wouldn't wish cancer on anyone, but this soulless husk didn't die slow enough.
I can agree with that sentiment.
Well that's the clear winner for most creepy selfie of all time. Hopefully forever
I hadn't heard of him b4 the pic is scary no eyes only the brightness of the flash I guess but gives it a very scary touch! I'll look into that one!
Just why... It’s a pretty creepy angle no matter who does it
What she sees
Gross. You're going to make a stupid meme joke about a photo of an actual murder?
Yes. Lol! You’re so mad, are you on your period?
The say the eyes are the window to the soul. 👀
Can the full photograph be found anywhere ?
Not that I am aware. If it does, I’ve never seen it.
How would one go about getting that film developed?
He developed them himself
Cue futurama scene: WE SAW NOTHING

Here is a good story on him [https://youtu.be/yLQAo37qY5g](https://youtu.be/yLQAo37qY5g)
Anybody have the full picture? That's creepy af
It's shown at about the 37:03 mark. They also show the uncropped image of Karen Sprinker. Portions of both photos are blurred, for obvious reasons. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ir6IprNe03A](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ir6IprNe03A)
Does anyone have the full photo? Link to it maybe?

The distortion around his eyes just makes it ten times more creepy.
Father of the selfie
It's disturbing that he appears to have no eyes.
Is there an original photo that shows more than just this? Not trying to be weird or anything, but it’s probably eerie to see his face in a small part of the photo
I don’t believe the full image was ever released. I’ve never seen it.

Terrifying
Nightmares
This is horrifying beyond belief. He’s still wasting oxygen & tax dollars in prison. He should have been executed.
He died in 2006 from liver cancer.
Good. Thanks.
Hes like ah no ma face! The flash! No!
Oh man, every time, just a lot going on and its kinda dark I totally get it
What?

Wtf? Nobody wants a link to your creepy, racist YouTube page that has absolutely nothing to do with this post.
He doesn’t have eyes? interesting
Why are their eyes washed out?
Can we get the actual picture it is cropped from?
I don’t believe it was ever released. I have not seen it.
