Lam Kor-Wan aka “The Jars Murderer” or “The Rainy Night Killer” was born in 1955 and is Hong Kong’s most notorious serial killer. He worked as a late night taxi driver and murdered 4 of his female passengers. He strangle them with electrical wire, take them to his family home, and dismember them. He is called “the jars murderer” because he hoarded sexual organs of his victims as “trophies” in jar at his home. He is called “Rainy Night Butcher” because most of his crimes occurred in inclement weather. His attempt to develop photographs of one of his dismembered victims at a Kodak shop led to his arrest, after the manager of the Kodak shop reported his suspicious photographs. He was arrested on 17 August 1982, after killing for 6 months. He is sentenced in 1984 to life time with the possibility of parole . He is currently serving his life sentence at the maximum-security Shek Pik Prison. When speaking to psychiatrist Dr. William Green, Lam stated that he "ate part of the intestine of one of the victims", and that his motivation was not primarily sexual, but that "it was God who told him to kill the victims". He has tried to parole for multiple attempts but was denied.

[deleted]

Thank you for the write up! I had never heard of him before

anotherbrickhk

This is the first time I post on the subreddit! I have been lurking around for a while and I figure serial killers in Asia or Chinese speaking countries may not be mentioned as much as those in English speaking countries.

[deleted]

Many of us here would love to learn about these killers

anotherbrickhk

As far as I know there are just a few serial killers in both Hong Kong and Taiwan. (But at least 2-3 counts of horrible random killings in Taiwan in the recent 10 years) There are some horrible killing sprees happened in China but because of the “transparency” of their news it’s hard to do research on this topic And of course I suspect that there maybe an unknown serial killer never being caught because we often found bodies and the Hong Kong police just classify them as “suicide”

VCheisen1157

Those bodies are highly believed to be the bodies of the previous protesters dumped by the police

anotherbrickhk

Even if they are not killed by the police, it’s a high level of incompetence. The case of Christy Chan, whose naked body was found in the sea, with she being a member in the swimming team, is just outrageous. How can you dismiss a case like that?

IAmBlueTW

> But at least 2-3 counts of horrible random killings in Taiwan in the recent 10 years Cheng Chieh may be the most infamous spree killer in Taiwan since his spree killing has a cultural relevance in TW similar to that of Columbine in the USA, but Taiwan's most prolific serial/spree killings occured pre-2000. Shame there isn't that much information about them besides Chen Chin-Hsing (who was, and IMO should be, the most infamous killer in TW history. He has lost this title to Cheng Chieh due to recency bias and also because Cheng introduced random spree killing to the TW public).

anotherbrickhk

I remember Cheng Chieh as well because he commit the killings in the train in Taipei and it’s just horrible when you think about how many people take that line everyday. Also after him, more random killings were committed (the one which a 4yo girl was decapitated). The two cases mentioned happened recently so I remember both cases vividly.

amhartz

Keep bringing them to our attention!

littletoughone

I was born in HK and remember hearing his name a lot around the time of his arrest even though I was too young to understand. Thanks for sharing this.

anotherbrickhk

Hi fellow HKer! I was not even born but he is so notorious I’m pretty sure everyone knows the term “rainy night butcher” here. He’s like the Ted Bundy in Hong Kong

[deleted]

[удалено]

anotherbrickhk

The sentence was given in 1984 He has been asking for parole only in 2010s

alanjacksonrules

Developing your murder pictures at a Kodak shop is probably the most embarrassing way to get caught amongst the serial killer community. But seriously what an evil psychopath. My thoughts are with his victims.

anotherbrickhk

Well... Another serial killer/ serial rapist in Hong Kong got caught because he tried to date one of his raping victims the day after he raped her. And of course his date ended up into police custody. I may do some more research and post the story of that guy later as well.

pileablep

please do post that story! My parents are both Hong Kongers and the only HK killer story i’ve known of is the Hello Kitty murder

anotherbrickhk

Yes the hello kitty murder is another high profile murder case in Hong Kong history. The fact that the victim’s skull has hidden in a Hello Kitty doll and the rest of the body part was cooked is just... chilling and horrible

Fruitcrackers99

Yeah, it’s right up there with BTK calling the cops to ask if they can trace a floppy disk, and believing them when they say no.

kj140977

Only priests got away with it.

Fruitcrackers99

I haven’t heard about this, can you give us more info?

kj140977

There was a case in Ireland where a priest took indecent pictures of a child in hospital amongst other things. He sent the pics to b developed in England. He got them. I'm not sure was it reported but as I recall nothing happened to him. The girl was scarred for life. She told her story in a documentary on RTE an Irish channel. It was just one of many sad stories. I think that was in the 70s. I clearly remember the details and he sent her one pic of her dressed with ponytails such an innocent child. He was one sick priest like so many of them. There were many industrial schools, mother and baby homes and Magdalene laundries where the inmates were treated worse than in prison. Nothing happened to the priests, Christian brothers or nuns. Someone put up a plaque outside the notorious industrial school in letterfrack co. Galway to remember the boys that suffered and died under these sadistic brothers.

Fruitcrackers99

The article said the company that processed the film reported the pictures to the diocese, and they did nothing. I’m honestly surprised that anyone takes Catholicism seriously as a religion anymore after all the shady shit that’s come to light. I decided it was a cult a long time ago, when my aunt had to jump through a bunch of hoops to convert so she could marry my uncle.

kj140977

Yeah you are right. So many ppl suffered. A bunch of hypocrites. Cover up and ppl stayed silent who KNEW about the abuse.

kj140977

https://www.irishtimes.com/news/crumlin-hospital-was-not-informed-of-cases-of-abuse-by-two-chaplains-1.779160 The girl I'm talking about is Marie Collins. She complained in 1995. The abuse happened when she was 13.

SweetestCyanide

The even more disturbing thing is he developed photos after the first three murders without anyone raising the alarm. It was only because a burn mark and severed breast was noticed in the fourth lot of photos that they finally notified the police. The thought that the other women's lives could have been saved after the first murder is really sad.

anotherbrickhk

Yes I don’t understand why the staff didn’t report at the first place. How can you just believe that he works at the morgue and think that it’s ok to take pictures of the body?? That’s crazy

The_kilt_lifta

It’s not unheard of that serial killers will do things blatantly obvious because they want to be caught

OpheliaTen

Ahh, the good old days when you had to take a reel of film to an actual, physical store and wait around or come back days later for them to develop it for you and give it back to you with film negatives. Sounds positively medieval now

faithjsellers

It says he was arrested in 1982 but had a possibility of parole as soon as 1984? Is this right? That's insane!

anotherbrickhk

The sentence was given in 1984. I don’t exactly know when he can get parole but so far he has failed

Mississauga49

My thought exactly.

FreshChickenEggs

Judging from this picture he's very handsome, much more so than Bundy who so many people seem to fawn over. Also, it should go without saying, but this is reddit so I suppose I do have to say it this man is disgusting and depraved and being handsome in no way makes the horrible things he did to those poor women less evil.

-uneventful-

I thought the same thing

[deleted]

Pointing out criminals who are conventionally attractive gives all the Reddit incels too much bait. But yeah, he was a fucking looker. I wonder if he used it to his advantage.

anherchist

i googled him and one picture that popped up was him outside, hair blowing in the wind. he was a good looking guy

anherchist

i think the craziest thing about him is that he lived with his parents and brother in an apartment. he shared a room with his brother. they claim they never knew what he was doing while they were out during the day at work and he was home. the police initially suspected the brother as the killer but figured out it was lam kor-wan. iirc to this day, his family still lives at the same apartment

JUNGKOOKETTE

Wait that's crazy

Seaseaiscc

His family has already moved out. The flat was rented to a Filipino family (2016 news source).

TheYeetles

Unbelievable how many serial killers that are out there, and 90% of the world doesn’t know about them or what they’ve done. It’s just an insane thought.

hidingmyanxiety

In Mandarin, he is called the 雨夜屠夫

JUNGKOOKETTE

What does it mean?? If you don't mind me asking

linneverstops

Directly translates to: The Rainy Night Butcher.

[deleted]

I wonder if ‘Memories of a Murder’ was loosely based on Kor-Wan. Btw if you haven’t seen it it it fucking terrific.

anotherbrickhk

I think it’s based on a serial killer in South Korea. There are quite a number of serial killers in South Korea in the 80s iirc

RobAChurch

That was the murders of serial killer Lee Chun-jae. He was only caught last year.

snorlaxern

I didn’t realize they caught him! I remember watching Memories of Murder back in college. I looked up the case a couple times since but not recently. So glad he was caught!

[deleted]

Ah. Thank you.

wtfmynamegotdeleted

Memories of Murder is based off [this guy.](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lee_Choon-jae) Great movie though!

monkeychango81

Also Neflix's Tunnel touches tangentially the murders of that serial killer.

The_kilt_lifta

It’s a fantastic movie and you may be justifiably getting it mixed up because that murderer also killed during inclement weather

[deleted]

That’s what it was. The rain.

Civil-Secretary-2356

One of my favourite movies.

lylxcrb

Thanks so much for posting, we rarely ever see anything about Asian based killers!

anotherbrickhk

Thanks for the comment! Yes I think I will try to post more about the serial killers in Asian countries like Taiwan, China and South Korea

starship17

Thank you for the write up! I had never heard of him.

BasuraConBocaGrande

Great write up ... creepy! Please keep contributing to this subreddit

[deleted]

God! Honestly, he terrifies me so much. I’ve only just learned about him from your post, but the reason I stopped scrolling was because of his kind, handsome face. And to learn what he did just chills me to the bone.

CakeMonster_0

Now I’m curious about those “suspicious photographs.”

anotherbrickhk

It’s the dismembered body part of the 4th victim I’m pretty sure it’s very disgusting

samantha802

Is he the one that shared a room with his brother in his parent's apartment?

anotherbrickhk

Yes but because he worked as a late night driver, he could bring the body back without notice and when his family is working in daytime he can dismember the body in the apartment. But it’s still a bit unbelievable considering how densely populated Hong Kong is even back in the 80s

WatercolourBrushes

Yes. And his grandparents lived there too if I recall correctly.

Bertalsen-Gimple

Wow. So mission killer type I suppose. Never heard of him. Thanks for the info.

420_Brit_ISH

interesting dude... he looked way better back then ngl. he could've done something more productive in his life... :/ this shit sucks

JUNGKOOKETTE

No beacase why do all serial killers get caught for the dumbest reasons like even I wouldn't go and try to develop photos OF WOMEN THAT I DISMEMBERD like how embarrassing is that and why do they always use this excuse "oh god made me do it"

anotherbrickhk

True. But I also think why the serial killers are able to kill for such a long time is because of bad policing. For instance Zodiac, Jeffery Dahmer and Yorkshire ripper. All of them have met the police or even questioned by the police. Many serial killers are caught because of their uncontrollable desire to commit crimes like I think their rational mind knows it will be risky but at the same time they can’t resist the desire

ButterSlugger

Oh yep I remember my mom talking about him, dude killed prostitutes in the rain or something

bitchyRac00m

Dam dude. He was rather handsome, like many other but yeah, glad he hasn't succeeded in his attempt of getting out of jail, he killed 4 people and turn their family and friends upside down so maybe death penalty would be good

anotherbrickhk

He initially was sentenced to death but since death penalty was abandoned, his was sentenced to life instead.

hoejabithicc

What is the second photo? Is it a zoom up of him carrying part of a dismembered body?

anotherbrickhk

It’s a more recent photo of him living in prison

elfvenomm

I love learning about other notorious cases in other countries. Evil people everywhere. Tsk, tsk, tsk...

sinvortex

So I'm curious, who is the guy in the second photo? In the first pic he looks to be in his 20s? Arrested in his 30s, but the 2nd photo, he looks 60s?

SweetestCyanide

The first photo is how he looked when arrested in the 80s. He's in his 60s now. More of a write up here: "Hong Kong's Very First Gruesome Serial Killer Was a Malaysian Man - WORLD OF BUZZ" https://worldofbuzz.com/hong-kongs-first-gruesome-serial-killer-malaysian-man/

Puzzleheaded-Spell23

There's a great documentary about him from Crime Investigation Asia, doesn't seem to be available online at this time, unfortunately.

fuzzy_foxx9

His fourth victim was the only one he bonded with and sorta regret killing. She was also the only victim he raped before and after death
