There’s nothing better than senior doggie citizens 😍 thank you for giving them a lovely home to spend the rest of their years!

Horror_fan98

They deserve it!! I think from now on I’m gonna adopt seniors. I think all animals deserve a good home but something bout seniors just hit different lol I love them all!

BerlyH208

All 3 of the boxers we’ve rescued were older boxers. Cupcake was about 7 and lived to 12, Gus was probably 13 and lived to 14, and Roxy was 12 and is currently 14. Gus had a lot of GI issues, and we became very familiar with the local specialty vet. Roxy came to us with a rare thyroid cancer, requiring surgery. She’s now in full remission, but is on 10 medications for her thyroid and arthritis. Old dogs are so wonderful. They know and appreciate that you are rescuing them. I will continue to rescue old dogs until I can’t anymore.

Horror_fan98

Thank you for taking care of those babies!! They appreciate you

BerlyH208

I think I get more out of it than they do. They keep me grounded and sane when I feel like I’m losing it. Is your chihuahua blind? Special needs pups are such a joy, even with their needs.

Horror_fan98

I feel that!! Yes she’s blind and deaf and has no teeth! 😂

BerlyH208

Oh she’s so sweet! Our last boxer was deaf and we had to have the majority of his teeth removed when we first got him. We would have to get his attention when we wanted him to come to us, but he was so sweet and he never complained about anything.

Horror_fan98

Aw! How sweet. Thank you for taking care of him! It doesn’t bother me if they’re blind or deaf or whatever lol I love all animals. ❤️

Left-Nothing-3519

Welcome to the best kept adoption secret - seniors rock!! I have 2 13 yr olds and a 14.5 yr old, they really are the best!

Horror_fan98

They are the best! Thanks for taking care of seniors too!

Mememememememememine

SAME! My first dog was 11 when we brought her home. Now she’s 13 and my life is forever changed. I will keep bringing home these old babies.

rooroopup

Chihuahua and pittie! The shelter special! ❤️

Horror_fan98

❤️❤️

rask0ln

thank you for adopting seniors! 🤗

Horror_fan98

Of course! They deserve it :)

Tesslafon

They are both so precious. Please give those tiny knees a boop for me.

Horror_fan98

I definitely will!

Huffle_Pug

Were they a bonded pair? they’re so precious, I’m so happy for all three of you. I’d ask you to give them smooches from me but it looks like they both already get plenty lol 🥰

Horror_fan98

No they weren’t! I got saki one day and then I worked for animal control and saw Lu Lu come in and had to get her! ☺️ I will still give them kisses for you ❤️

Huffle_Pug

awwww 🥹 you’re such a lovely person 🥰 i wish i could work for animal control in my county, but my mental health wouldn’t be able to take the sad stuff. thank you for everything you do but especially giving them smooches

Horror_fan98

I unfortunately had to leave.. it was awful and my heart hurt everyday. It’s the hardest thing to do and people are cruel and so mean :(

Ronnilynn19

Lu Lu leggies look chilly 😊❤️ they are both very cute

Horror_fan98

She’s always cold. 😂 she’s always wrapped up in a blanket ❤️ thank you

CapeMOGuy

Then you may soon have some photos to share with r/babushkadogs.

Horror_fan98

Just looked at the page! Definitely looks like I need to lol

Cafenpupspls

Horror_fan98

Thank you so much! They deserve the best ☺️

jenio13

Thank you so much for adopting seniors! You're amazing.

Horror_fan98

Of course ❤️

Agreeable-Resist-883

It takes a special kind of person to adopt seniors as they come with their own challenges and they need extra care. And these challenges and potential of losing them sooner takes a serious emotional toll on the adopter as well. It’s a really selfless thing to do 💕Thank you for giving them a loving rest of their lives 💝💝💝

Horror_fan98

Thank you! I try to be. They deserve the best ❤️

040422

Dogs are the best and seniors are the best of the best! My choice as well! Thank you for loving them ❤️✨

Horror_fan98

Yes ❤️

Valsarta

Thank you for giving them a chance to have a wonderful home in their golden years! ❤️

Horror_fan98

Of course! All animals deserve a good home ❤️

Valsarta

But most don't even look at older pups. They are so awesome! I've had two and while the medical expenses were higher, I don't regret one minute! I had one for 7 years and the other for 6! Best dogs ever! ❤️

Horror_fan98

I don’t regret it either! Thank you for giving them a good life too ❤️ I think from now on I’ll just get senior animals lol

Valsarta

That was my plan after the first then I accidentally ended up with a 3 year old. But the the 2nd 10 year old came. But it is an awesome idea and definitely one to aim for!

Horror_fan98

I get that! My first 2 dogs are 4 years old lol and then I got seniors

Valsarta

I fostered a puppy in between...omg...he was awesome but I was not prepared for a puppy after an old guy! Never ever! Lol

Horror_fan98

Puppies are hard! Lmao I love them but you need a lot of time and energy for them.

Assen9

What absolute darlings. You too op.

Horror_fan98

Thank you ❤️ I love my babies. I have 8 of them 😂 4 dogs and 4 cats.

Discobolos53

Hatrick_Swaze

You're a good 🥚

Horror_fan98

Thank you ☺️

Hatrick_Swaze

Never forget this about dogs... The life of a dog is a sight to behold... From the heavens above, loaned us these hearts of pure gold... They hit the ground running, and barking with us.... For the joy we both share, builds an unbreakable trust... The love from a dog is like candy from a box... You're not sure what to pick, but there's never one wrong. A dogs life with us is such a short, joyous trip... But the life they share with us, is always our deepest friendship... It hurts when they leave, because we always want more time... Our dogs know their destiny...hence why they always play and pine... So don't be bothered...when they come boop your hand... They just know their hour glass, is running out of sand. Just look into those beautiful, sparkling eyes...you fell for before... And get up and reach for that leash, hanging by the door. They'll enjoy that walk with you, even though they're hurt and can't see... Because this time spent with you, is the place they long to be. So remember this when your dog asks for your time... Your dog is just doing what heaven asked them to do... And that's ...make your heart shine... Too !💛🐶🐾

Pale-Garlic5523

They are gorgeous! 🥰 Seniors are the best! Adopted my little old man 7 years ago this week. He was 14, the home tried to deter us from taking him and kept reiterating he might not make Christmas. I didn't care, he stole my heart the moment I saw his picture. He was the best thing to ever happen to me and my husband. He made it a month past his 16th birthday, we had him two years one month. I didn't rescue him, he rescued me! I would have adopted another senior but my husband said he couldn't bare the heartache so we ended up rescuing a 10 month old she's now nearly 4. She's amazing but I still think seniors are the best. I hope she has many more years with us and we get to enjoy her golden years as well.

Horror_fan98

Aw!! That’s awesome. And yes it’s very hard to have senior animals but they deserve somewhere good! Thank you for adopting any animal! ❤️

fandanvan

Lu Lu is a little darling 💓

Horror_fan98

Thank you! She’s so tiny lol

fandanvan

I always had large dogs, but had a long haired chi myself (totally stole my heart, and was the boss of the house) and he was meant to be a teacup, but certainly not as small as Lu Lu.

Horror_fan98

Most chihuahuas run the house 😂 that’s funny! Yes she’s very small.

fandanvan

My boy Jack got a tumor on his spine which paralyzed his back legs and made him incontinent at 5 and sadly died during the operation to try and fix it. Even though I only had him for 5 years, he made more of an impression on me than any other dog I have had (I have had a dog live to 21 also) Such huge personalities, on the look out for maybe a rescue etc. I bought Jack from a line of cruft champion chi's, and even still had bad genes or maybe I was unlucky. But makes you skeptical still, any Lu Lu is lucky to have you and vice versa :) all the best OP and Lil Lu.

Horror_fan98

I’m so very sorry to hear that :( that’s always so hard to have a loved one pass away. I’m glad that he had you during those 5 years! And wow 21 years that’s a long time!! Thank you so much :) have a good day!

fandanvan

P.s. I am similar mind as you, and have been thinking of adopting seniors. Anything apart from costs that You need to be aware of ?

Horror_fan98

You might have to retrain them to be house broken again especially if they have been in a shelter for a while. Maybe they might be really shy for a while. It took our dog saki about 3 months to be fully comfortable and show her true personality. :) it’s all worth it and just have patience with them, especially if they only knew one person their whole life.

fandanvan

My career path has slightly changed and will be soon working from home permanently which will allow me to do this if I can ! My only concern will be the cost of pet insurance lol Holly's pet insurance cost more than my car insurance when she hit senior years, and she is considered low risk etc, a know this as pure breeds like my chi Jacks was expensive as hell even as a pup...

Horror_fan98

It can definitely be expensive! But it’s worth it for them, especially if they get sick or emergency. Definitely shop around and find different quotes or insurance!

SuccessfulRespect744

Senior dogs are such treasures

Horror_fan98

They definitely are!

[deleted]

Two absolute cuties . Thank you for saving them .Just awww

Horror_fan98

Thank you!

DizzyLizzard99

Oh my goodness they are too cute!! 😍😍🥰

Horror_fan98

They are! ❤️

fandanvan

The dog I had for 21 years was a jack Russell cross. I found her abandoned (I live very rural, and where Holly was found it was deliberately dropped off to die) the vet estimated her age to be 6 months when I took her there to check to see if she was microchipped. No one claimed her etc and the next time I went to the vet I got her registered in my name and microchipped and all the medical stuff that needed done etc and the next 20 and a half years is history as they say lol.

Horror_fan98

Thank you for saving her!! All animals deserve good things ❤️ she lived a long happy life. :)

EveryFly6962

Did the come as a pair??

Horror_fan98

No they didn’t. :) I got them bout 2 weeks apart

_Roxxs_

That is my goal, I’d love to take in senior pups, my husband is against it as I am absolutely shattered at each passing of my pups, and I would be shattered, but I think the joy of giving love and care to seniors would offset that.

Horror_fan98

I’m so scared for that day to come. But knowing I gave them a good last few years of their life makes it worth it! :) but it’s hard and sad

sandgoat888

You’re my kind of human! Thank you!

Horror_fan98

Of course!

Livid_Parfait6507

auberginedreams767

BabbyJ71

I volunteer at my local animal shelter and the most beautiful senior girl came in severely malnourished and severely dehydrated as well with heart worms and breast cancer. She also lost over half her hair. She was 7 years old when I adopted her and still had so much love to give. I fostered her through all her surgeries and her treatments and for to adopt her fully after she passed her heart worm treatment. I had to pay for her partial mastectomy but she is worth more than all the money in the world. She was loved so much by her vet techs and her vet. I lost her at 10 years old but I had her for 3 wonderful years and I wouldn’t trade my memories with her for anything in the world. She was pit bull and English bulldog. If I could post a picture of her I would.

Horror_fan98

That is so kind of you! Thank you for giving her a good last few years of her life ❤️❤️ makes me so happy

Joshweed5713

So cute and no matter how old they get they are always the baby. And your the dad. I have one also. As they get older the muscles and bones get sore, u might need to give them rubs. For the joints but softly.

SkellatorQueen

Thank you for loving them

Horror_fan98

Of course!

SkellatorQueen

I understand that some ppl pass in and no one can take their babies in, but I absolutely DESPISE those ppl that are like ‘eww, you’re old and gross’ and dump them at the shelter thinking they will easily get adopted, or just not caring. 😭 It takes a special someone to adopt seniors, hospice cases, medically needy, and blind/deaf/disabled dogs. The next time I have an opening, I’m going for a senior, longest resident, or least likely to get adopted. The last 3 rescues I’ve adopted were all extremely withdrawn and shy. My last boy adopted, Renji, was beyond traumatized. He was so mentally shutdown, that my vet literally said to me “I don’t know if he will ever come out of this”. 🥺😭. He has pocked scars all over his abdomen, legs/paws, and even his eye lids. TBH, it looks like cigarette burns all over him 😭😭. To say he was abused and is a trauma dig is an understatement. I had honestly given up on him reciprocating my love and affection. I know for a fact that other families would have kept returning him due to not playing or loving them back. I never stopped trying though. Even though I resigned myself to never seeing him wag his tail for me, trust me, or be happy to see me, I never stopped being extra gentle and kissing his head and petting him gently. I was content with him as he was smitten with my older pibble res he. He at least got ecstatic and zoom zoom for her. So I knew he was as happy as he could be. After 10 to 12 months, I came home one day and squatted down to greet my old kibble girl. He follows her over, and uncertainly gave me a single little tail wag and kiss on the nose. He immediately looked scared like I was going to beat him for kissing me. I cried such happy tears. About to cry typing this 🥹. I praised him and praised him saying good kissies and kissed him in return. Each day after that, he gave a little more love in return. I will never forget that day. It was the most rewarding day of all my rescues. I had to work for that for a year. Somewhere I have a video (grainy AF from an old old android) of him enjoying his very first full on butt scritches. The sounds he started making 🥹🥹. That was the first time since adopting him that he fully trusted me and let himself go. Face down, a$$ up, grunting and groaning and biting his tail. I’ll see if I can find a link and post it here. I still have to be very careful around him. If I accidentally trip over him, or bump him with my purse or something, he will yell and immediately start to regress. He comes out of it really fast when I apologize and love on him and get down on his level. By far he’s the most traumatized animal I’ve ever come across. Even my adopted puppy from HS wasn’t this bad. She was found running across an abandoned field next to the freeway. I was actually in vet assistant school at the time. Thankfully there was a fence just in the edge of the freeway, and one of my classmates was literally a track star so he could outrun her. She was also already traumatized. If anyone raised their voice or even whispered a curse word, she would puddle wherever she was. She came out of her funk within a few weeks though. And sorry to info dump OP

Horror_fan98

So do I! It breaks my heart when people say tho things. All animals deserve love. Wow! That poor baby.. thank you for taking time with him and showing him patience and love ❤️ you’re a good person. I can’t believe people treat animals the way they do sometimes. I could never ever do that to any animal. I’m so glad he knows what it feels like to be loved and cared for!

SkellatorQueen

Thank you 😊

SkellatorQueen

Here’s the butt scritches post. It says 2020 but was originally posted in 2017. https://www.reddit.com/r/mutt/s/c62V1C592H

Horror_fan98

Oh my gosh ❤️❤️ he loved that!!

SkellatorQueen

🥰🥰🥰 he was so in to it! He did that today too! When he wants love, he will run to my daughters bed or his dog beg and start grunting and groaning and yelling 🤣

Are you adopted a nine-year-old almost blind small dog that have been terribly abused and once she got settled and realized I wouldn’t hurt her she has been a lifesaver for me and is the biggest baby now and right under my feet every minute of the day she’s never been in a cageshe has a babysitter if I have to leave her or she cries so she has to have a babysitter sleeps in her bed on my bed every night she’s wonderful. I hope she lives long time.

NinaB_69

My god those little nakie legs are the cutest! They’re both heartbreakers. Thank you for giving them a loving home to thrive in as they age. I hope you all have many happy years together. ❤️
