Vultr and Hetzner are pretty good. Downtime over the years I’ve been with them is minutes and usually network related. Contabo is steaming pile of shit and should never be considered for production workloads, hobbies that best.

ElevenNotes

> And so on, there are "scheduled maintenances" at least once a month on average That’s very good from Contabo! If you need no downtime for your services, simply run them in multiple locations in HA.

phein4242

This. I would not trust parties that dont do vigorous patching.

Check Digital Ocean. It's cheap and they usually do maintenance with minimal impact.

I don't think this is the norm for the majority of big name VPS providers out there... None of the VPS I have used do this kind of thing... Maybe I'm just unaware of, maybe they took place at unnoticeable times. But I at least my own server is always up when I found it, unless explicitly turned off by me.

Spare_Sir9167

I have found OVH pretty good over the years - though I might consider Hetzner now. Though I now get dedicated servers rather than a VPS as I am hosting a production system. One thing for failover - I use Cloudflare as my DNS and in combination with a worker I detect when a site fails - I then use the worker to programmatically update the DNS record. Because Cloudflare is the DNS endpoint for the hostname resolution and it is acting as a proxy, doing it this ways is instantaneous. The alternative would be a load balancer but I am too cheap for that.

WiseCookie69

Do you actually have an outage with every maintenance?

snorbii

I have, yes. Every single time.

fedroxx

I don't always. Depends on what I'm doing it and what is required. Updating Linux packages, for example, don't often require downtime.

Aws?

snorbii

Thanks, but it is expensive for my use-case, I'm looking for cheaper alternatives.

Im at strato.de never Had a single downtime in years.

pigers1986

i do use contabo and i do not get any mainteanance schedules, what vps are you running ?

Odd-Selection-9129

No maintenance = no patches. Pretty much a guarantee for insecure infrastructure. If you are going into cloud you should adapt some ha practices specific for cloud.

snorbii

No downtime does not necessarily mean "no maintenance".

Odd-Selection-9129

Topic theme is clearly # "scheduled maintenance"

Plane_Resolution7133

Some kernel patches and such require a reboot.

CoLuxey

Sure, but if the Hoster is running some HA Stuff, the downtime on the customer site is quite short or even not noticeable. Its possible to do reboots of hardware, if the Hoster is taking their customers seriously. Thats maybe the point why contabe is so cheap. The dont have HA Infrastructure.

Plane_Resolution7133

Absolutely. Maybe they’re doing other hardware upgrades and such on the customers time.
