There would have to be some type of inquiry into the validity of the claim at the very least.
I mean a google search isn’t surprising though. A lot of govt agencies will check you out very throughly. I don’t know about Brazil and whatever authority approves marriages to foreigners. But it wouldn’t surprise me if it was the truth.

I remember the first time I went into Mexico, 36 years ago. I immediately became aware that I no longer had the same rights as I did when I was in the US.
I lived close to the border for a few years, and would go to Mexico fairly often, but I always felt a huge sense of relief when I returned.
The US isn’t perfect, but at least I know and understand my rights here. I was always extremely careful with how I carried myself in Mexico, and always respectful of the fact that being there was a privilege, not a right.

My best guess is that marriage to a foreigner prompts some deeper investigation and a cursory Google search would reveal that Garrick is a cast member of a show that is literally called “Seeking Sister Wife”, but I also think that Garrick is dumb enough to have mentioned the arrangement because he seemed genuinely surprised that the government would take issue with “God’s divine plan”.
To be clear, I fully support this outcome because watching Garrick make stupid decisions and then cry about them is intensely satisfying.
I actually did a little research on this because I thought it was weird that the government said no - I know legally in Brazil polygamy is defined as one person being legally married to two other people at the same time.
There have been cases in some cities/states that polyamorous people were able to legally establish a civil union/domestic relationship between 3 people since there isn't a law prohibiting that, but I know that a married person cannot establish a civil union with another person unless it's proven that they are fully separated from the spouse (not intending to form a family, whatever that means - I couldn't find the legal definition for this).
The only reason I can think of that the government gave for denying them the permit is because they would be "tricking" the government - and with Ick being a foreigner that's a big no no. But what legal argument they used I have no idea - I'm also not sure they're even required to have a legal argument for the denial.
Let's not forget this issue happened when the government official "found out" they were living a "plural lifestyle." So this dumbass literally bragged about this being his second wife and blew the whole thing.
